Message from the President
The high season for the Princess Anne has finally arrived! Our outstanding golf, tennis and swim programs are
now in full swing and you can feel the activity picking up on the PACC campus both day and night.
June 1st marked the launch of our new and improved website and app, our acceptance of credit cards for online
payment and the addition of several enhanced security measures. Since this message is being written before the
launch, we welcome your response to the technology and security upgrades as our Team continues to fine-tune
them to maximize our members’ convenience.
The Building Committee and Master Planning Committee are carefully working to finalize a phased plan for proposed
enhancements to the West Lawn, our pool complex and the Chesapeake Room. The Strategic Plan will be fiscally prudent,
responsive to our members’ survey and focused on improving the athletic, dining and entertainment experiences for our
member families. Executing on this plan will be vitally important in attracting new members in a challenging, competitive
environment. Stay tuned for more information in the months ahead.
We hope to see you often in and around the Club this summer.
All the best,
Jonathan L. Thornton
Up-to-Date from the General Manager
APP FOR AN APP
We look forward to phasing in and fully populating numerous fresh features to the Princess Anne’s new
customized mobile app throughout this summer and ask for your understanding and feedback as we do so. If
you have not yet had a chance to download the PACC App I urge you to do so today and take advantage of our
“App for an App” reward program. Just stop by the main clubhouse front desk, show us your app and receive a
coupon for a free appetizer in Breakers or in the clubhouse.
NET GENERATION for our Next Generation of Tennis Stars
Youth programming reaches its peak this time of year and this issue is packed with additions and enhancements
to our flourishing programs. I’m reticent to single out just one in this column but cannot resist highlighting our amazing
developmental junior tennis program. Our Tennis Professional Team has partnered with the United States Tennis
Association to introduce a new program called NET GENERATION that will empower young players between four and
fourteen to develop at their own pace. Our Tennis Professionals will utilize a customized coaching curriculum and pathway
based on competencies defined by the USTA and players will receive quarterly assessments and afforded the opportunity
to enjoy tennis on their own terms. Please stop the Tennis Shop for more details.
Our Operations Team is always exploring avenues to better serve the Princess Anne Family and garner so much through
your valuable feedback and suggestions. As you have thoughts about any aspect of your Club please do not hesitate to
contact me via phone on my direct line (757) 440-3100 or e-mail [email protected].
I very much look forward to seeing you at The Princess Anne this summer!

Summer Safety Reminders
We are looking forward to seeing our Members fully enjoying The Princess Anne during our summer season! In
preparation for this busy time, we offer the following reminders and strongly encourage our parents to emphasize
them while supervising children on property.
Security / Non-Member Trespassing / Firearms
• While signs are posted and much of the property is camera monitored, accessibility from multiple public
streets makes us susceptible to non-member activity, particularly over the summer season. Members are
urged to avoid leaving valuables in vehicles (particularly visible) and may not bring firearms on to Club
property. Operations team protocol calls for us to notify the main Clubhouse front desk immediately
whenever we suspect a non-member is on property, and we request Club Members do the same.
Clubhouse / Locker Rooms / Lounges
• Gentlemen are asked to remove their hats upon entering the Clubhouse. While ladies and gentlemen may
change in/out of their swim wear in the locker rooms, bathing suits are not permitted in the Clubhouse.
• Juniors (under age 18) are not permitted in the ladies and men’s locker rooms and lounges unless
accompanied by an adult. Ladies and gentlemen are encouraged to lock their lockers.
Pool / Poolside Locker Rooms
• Swimmers below age nine (including swim team members) must be under the supervision of a Member, a
Member’s child or a caretaker who is age 12 or older. Divers below age nine must be accompanied and
supervised by an adult (age 18 or over) present in the diving area.
• Our aquatics and Breakers teams are focused on elevating our maintenance while vigilantly monitoring the
busy locker rooms throughout the summer. We thank parents in advance for your monitoring support. Please
do not hesitate to alert Aquatics Director Brian Triolet or Breakers Manager Mardy Colling immediately with any
concerns.
Fitness / Sport Court
• Children under the age of 14 may use the fitness center if they are accompanied by, and under the
supervision of, a personal trainer approved by the Fitness Committee or parent. Children 14-16 years of age
who have completed a one-hour orientation with the Fitness & Wellness Director may use the fitness facility
without parental supervision, during staff-supervised hours.
• All Members are required to sign in at the fitness center desk prior to utilizing the center and the sport court.
Please adhere to the rules posted outside the court and requests by our team.
Parking / Bicycle Safety
• Parking in the Club lots is for Members and their guests only. If you witness non-members utilizing the parking
facilities, please inform our front desk team.
• Skateboarding is not permitted on Club property.
• Cyclists are encouraged to exercise great caution as they enter the Club property. Specifically, we ask
that bikes are walked on the sidewalk along the lower, south side Club entrance, Breaker’s Boulevard and
Breaker’s dining area. Bikes should be parked and locked on the bike racks on the east side of the pool, or by
the sport court.

ORIN SWIFT WINE DINNER
FRIDAY, JUNE 8
RECEPTION 6:00 - 6:30 PM | DINNER SERVED 6:30 PM | PRICING $95++
The history of Orin Swift Cellars dates back to 1995 when on a lark, David Swift Phinney took a friend up on
an offer and went to Florence, Italy to spend a semester “studying”. During that time, he was introduced to
wine, how it was made and got hooked. A few more years of university led to graduation and eventually a
job at Robert Mondavi Winery in 1997 as a temporary harvest
worker. Deciding that if he was going to work this hard, it would
eventually have to be for himself, in 1998 he founded Orin Swift
Cellars; Orin is his father’s middle name and Swift is his mother’s
maiden name. With two tons of zinfandel and not much else, he
spent the next decade making wine for others as well as himself
and grew the brand to what it is today. Known for their creative
artwork and robust blends, these complex wines will be paired
with an exceptional four-course menu from Chef Geoff Benson.

OF BALLS
3. Lost ball
Under penalty of one stroke, after looking for a maximum of five (5) minutes, you must go back to where the shot
was originally played from and replay.
4. Unplayable lie
Under penalty of one stroke:
Option 1: Play a ball from where you played your last shot.
Option 2: Drop a ball any distance behind where the ball lies, keeping a straight line between the hole, the point
where the ball lies and the spot where the ball is dropped. If the ball is in a bunker, you must drop in the bunker.
Option 3: Drop a ball within two club lengths of where the ball lies, not nearer the hole.
If the ball is in a bunker, you must drop in the bunker.
5. Out of bounds
Under penalty of one stroke you must go back to where the shot was originally played from and replay.
6. Removing objects in a bunker
• Loose impediments are natural objects and may not be moved or even touched.
• Movable obstructions are artificial objects (like a rake) and may be moved. If the ball moves there is no penalty
and the ball must be replaced.
7. Hitting the wrong ball
The penalty for hitting the wrong ball in match play is loss of hole. If both players hit the wrong ball, only the first
player to do so would be penalized as that would be the end of the hole.
The penalty for hitting the wrong ball in stroke play for either player is two strokes and the correct ball must
be replayed from its original position. The penalty for not correcting before teeing off on the next hole is
disqualification.
8. Relief from a cart path
Step 1: Determine the “nearest point of relief ”: that point closest to the ball where the path does not interfere with
the ball, the swing or the stance.
Step 2: Drop the ball within one club length of the nearest point, no closer to the hole. Be sure that after the drop
you have complete relief from the path.
Note: After dropping, the ball may roll up to two club lengths from where it struck the ground, but not closer to
the hole.
9. Repairing the line of putt
A player may repair an old hole plug or a ball mark on the green, even if his ball is not on the green. Any other
damage may not be repaired if it might assist the player in his play of the hole. Movable obstructions and loose
impediments, including sand and soil on the green may be removed by any means (hand, towel, hat, club, etc).
Good luck in your new golf season. It appears that you have done all the right things to be ready. However, I have to advise
you that you may never be completely “Armed and Dangerous.” Learning the rules of golf and playing the game of golf tend
to be “works in progress”. As long as you are playing golf, you will always be learning and improving. That’s what makes it fun!

Tennis Talk
By John Fraser
I trust that you are all in full summer mode enjoying all it has to offer! We hope you will find time to come out and enjoy
your tennis facility, whether it be simply a chance to get some exercise with friends, jump into one of our many programs or
taking a lesson. Make sure to check out our tennis calendar to see all the fun events and tournaments coming up!
John’s Tip of the Month
Doubles Ready Position for Net Player
When your partner is serving to the deuce side and
you are right handed, you want to make sure you
are ready for a backhand volley in case the return
goes down the line. Usually in that situation, the
ball is coming very fast and you’ll be doing well to
just reflex it back. If your racquet is already prepared
for a backhand, you’ll increase your chances
drastically of getting it back or even putting it
away. This will also discourage your opponent from
trying a down the line shot too, which in turn will
give you more poaching opportunities. Also, if the
ball comes straight at you you’ll be able to defend it off your body better with a backhand rather than a forehand. On the ad
side, however, you’ll want to adopt a more traditional “neutral” ready position with the racquet out in front of you so that the
tip of the racquet head is in line with your nose. Obviously, for lefties it would be the exact opposite.
IPTL/March Madness
Our first installment of our IPTL was
a March Madness themed series event
where everybody got to wear the colors
of their alma mater. They were then
broken up into two equal teams VT and
UVA, and played three rounds, two of
which were mixed and the other was
gender doubles.The format was one
set to six, tie breaker at five all, no lets
but there were power points. Those are
points awarded to certain teams that can
use them at any time to either get ahead
or to get back even. After three rounds
of hard fought battles the total games of
the night were dead even at 57-57 so it came down to a tie breaker between Chip Cutchins/Sheridan Conley and Adam
Long/Lisa Deaver with Adam and Lisa prevailing 10-8! It couldn’t have been any closer between two different teams so
the final score was 58-57 VT! Thanks to all of the players for making it a fun event!

USPTA Mid-Atlantic Convention
This year’s convention was held at the Army Navy Country Club in Arlington,
Virginia. Our tennis professionals always look forward to it as it’s a chance to network
with other area pros as well as hear many interesting speakers. Workshops start at
8:00 am and go through to 6:00 pm, Friday through Sunday. It’s quite a lot to take
in.Topics range from fitness and injury prevention drills to court construction and
maintenance, to running tournaments and kids’ programs. We always appreciate our
club and our members who support our continuing education programs so that we
can be at the cutting edge of our profession.
Net Generation
Net Generation is the new name for our developmental junior
tennis program. Quickstart 36 and 60 now will be Net Gen
Red and Orange. Academy and Elite Academy monikers
will remain going forward. Net Generation is a new teaching
approach sponsored by the USTA for kids ages 4-14. It’s designed
to suit players based on their skill level and developmental readiness. This approach
provides us the flexibility to modify lessons to better meet the needs of the player and
facilitate development, making learning more fun. We believe in creating a positive,
warm, welcoming and interactive environment for all youth players. By focusing on
play, building character and championing individual challenges, we empower kids
to grow and develop at their own pace. It’s all about providing our junior players the
opportunity to enjoy tennis on their own terms by utilizing a customized coaching
curricula and a clearly defined pathway. Players participating in the program will
receive quarterly assessments from the coaches giving kids and their parents a better
understanding of where they are on the pathway based on a list of competencies
defined by the USTA for each level.

CHKD Winter Open Mixed Doubles Tournament
Our CHKD Winter Open Mixed Doubles Tournament continues to gain popularity
with not only our members but also the Hampton Roads tennis community. This
year was another sellout with 64 teams competing, 45 of which were teams with at
least one member. There were 50 people on the waiting list, many of who came to the
Friday night party even though they did not get into the tournament. Capping the
field at 16 teams per division enabled us to schedule out the entire weekend so people
knew when they played each match ahead of time. On Saturday, we ran a record 45
matches from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm and were pleased to see a continuous stream of
spectators coming and going making for an awesome atmosphere. Despite getting
all those matches completed on Saturday, we still had to start the event on Thursday
where we ran three rounds. The finals were played at 1 pm Sunday where we witnessed
Lisa Fanney winning her 5th 9.5 division title with her 4th different partner, James
Coxe, a former UNC standout. It appeared Lisa was going to have to play her sister
Michele again in the final but it was not to be as she and her partner, Scott Baxter fell
to new member,Travis Bode and his partner Kristi Elliott in the semi finals. The 9.5
division final was a somewhat one sided affair with Lisa and James winning 6-2, 6-2.
In other action, long time participants Mike Sullivan and Angela Gilliam defeated the
member team of Allan and Meg Haynsworth in the 8.5 division final while member
Beth Kulas and her guest Johann Cujardo defeated member. Rick Tillar and his sister-
in-law, Christy in the 7.5 title. The all-member team of Neil Richards and Lexi Rawls
took the 6.5 division crown with a win over member Beth Skolnick and her guest, Ben
Lynch. A huge thanks to all of our sponsors for raising a whopping $33,000 before
the tournament even started, and to our Oceanfront Circle ladies for pouring their
heart and soul into making it such a special event, and to all our participants for their
continued support of this great cause.

Movement Matters
Keys for Easing Back into a Program After a Break
By Charles Kawadza
We spend so much time fixing everything else in our lives except the one thing that matters the
most, our body. How many of us have stressed so much about our car not working properly, but
are not as worried when our body stops operating at optimal performance? We write it off as a
result of the aging process. We put in the best gas for our car, we take it for a tune up every so
often, pay good money to get a good detailing job, buy new tires when needed, and the list goes
on.
It’s surreal once you put it in that perspective isn’t it? Exercise, proper nutrition, proper foot wear and doctor checkups are some
of the things we can intentionally do to make sure our one body works the way it should. Exercising should not be neglected
as it is such an important part of encouraging the body to continue to function properly. It is your tune up, your maintenance
service for your body. As Gray Cook puts it, “The goal for training is not to change how the body looks, but to improve how
the body moves.” So if you have been so hesitant about the idea of working out because you are uncomfortable in the gym, then
consider changing your perspective and doing it for the reason of moving better.
We all see it: the balance issues, the foot shuffle walk, the forward lean posture, the slow gait patterns, etc. Yes, you all know what
I am talking about. Of course it gets you from point A to point B, but at what cost? You can improve that by practicing proper
movement patterns, relearning movement and strengthening your muscles to establish better posture. Forget body image...that’s
reason enough to get you exercising again. At every age, maintaining good movement should be the prime reason we continue to
exercise.
You can always come to the fitness center and get your movement analyzed or work with one of the trainers to help you build
better strength. You can even make a personal effort every day to start your day with walking practice and some body mobility
drills. Here are a few examples of exercises you can practice:

Also, practicing the “bear crawl” (getting on your hands and knees, slightly lifting the knees and crawling). This exercise takes
us back to when we as human started learning how to move. There is a reason we did that before we began walking. It teaches
shoulder stability, core engagement, glute activation, gait training, hip/knee/ankle flexion and extension. Basically, everything we
need to move properly is addressed in this movement.Try it! If you need help with it, we can help. If you ever fall, you can always
crawl, so practice makes perfect.
BEAR CRAWL
Eric Cressey says, “Every single rep either makes you better or worse. If you are doing an exercise, understand why.” Start
exercising because you want to move better and free of pain.
