Message from the President
The summer newsletter is an exciting issue to mail to our membership. It’s a guide to all the wonderful events
your club has to offer. The Breaker’s Boulevard Grillin’ & Chillin’ Concert Series begins in June. Our Youth
Committee has an exciting schedule of programs planned, the Swim Team is gearing up for another great
season and your Golf, Tennis and Fitness Professionals have another competitive series of tournaments and
events scheduled. I encourage everyone to take advantage of these offerings, get involved and enjoy your great
club! Have a great summer!
Sincerely,
Jay Standing
Up-to-Date from the General Manager
Strategic Planning Efforts Continue
Last issue I devoted much of this column to the Princess Anne’s inspiring strategic planning and thinking
efforts to analyze her current mission and forge a clear path into her second century. Please rest assured that our
Directors and other devoted Member leaders are synergizing with our Team to continue to provide a haven for
the Princess Anne Family. We’ve intensified our focus on a private, comfortable atmosphere and “home away
from home”environment where Member’s ever-evolving needs are exceeded through best in class service, family
oriented programs and first-rate social and athletic facilities. Your Board of Directors recently updated resident
guest and non-resident guest rules in order to better protect your Member privileges. Please see page 5 for
details. We continue to drill down into last year’s Member survey results. Please see pages 7-8 that detail and our
action plans to address your valuable feedback. As for family oriented programs, there are close to a dozen pages inside this newsletter
detailing youth and family programming. Our March 23rd Youth Expo was buzzing with activity and as summer youth camps sold out
that evening, we’ve expanded to meet this wonderful demand.
Master Plan Committee Formed
As I scribe this column in April, President Standing has just formed a Master Plan Committee that will laser their focus on first rate
facilities. The Committee hopes to work with master plan professionals to formalize a short and long term plan to address potential future
improvements. The chart below lists how various demographics in last year’s survey ranked potential future improvements:

Rule Changes | Resident & Non-Resident Guests l Effective May 1
As a Princess Anne member, it is your privilege to host guests at your club. In fact, we encourage it! Your Board of Directors and
Operations Team also, however, work very diligently to ensure the sanctity of your Club and protect its amenities.
To that end, your Board recently approved revisions to the rules pertaining to resident and non-resident guests. Each rule has been
provided on the next page with the revised portions appearing in red. As the summer season approaches and time for gathering
with friends increases, please familiarize yourself with these changes.
Please note that the changes to the resident guest rule were crafted in coordination with our friends at the Cavalier Golf and Yacht
Club (CGYC). Should a PACC member visit the Cavalier and wish to bill their charges back to the PACC, the same conditions
listed in the PACC guest rule will apply. As a reminder, the Princess Anne has no formal reciprocal agreement in place with any
club. Should you wish to visit another club unaccompanied by one of their members, arrangements must be made in advance.
Additionally, please be reminded of the following regarding fueling at the CGYC fueling dock:
Access to the Cavalier fueling dock is limited to CGYC members and their accompanied guests. If you are an accompanied guest
of a Cavalier member, your fuel purchase is subject to a $25 fueling fee with a limit of 50 gallons of fuel. This purchase must be
billed to the membership account of the Cavalier member or paid via credit card. Please note, declaration of preferred payment
method must be made before fueling begins.
If you have any questions regarding these changes, please do not hesitate to contact Membership Director Jennifer Garrott at
757-440-3110 or [email protected]. We hope you have a fun-filled summer and look forward to seeing you around the

Resident Guests l PACC Rules & Regulations l Article XII, Section B
Key revisions includes:
• Administrative fee of $10 for accompanied guests to bill incurred charges back to other clubs
• Dependent guests under the age of 18 may not bill charges back to another club
A member can accompany a resident guest (i) for cocktails and/or dining, no more than two times in a calendar month and twelve times
per calendar year, and (ii) up to six times per year for golf, tennis, swimming or fitness. Guest privileges cannot exceed the privileges of their
member escort.
All resident guests must be accompanied by a member and such member shall guarantee payment of any applicable guest fees and charges
established by the Board of Directors. Resident guests are prohibited from inviting other guests to the club.
While the Princess Anne has no formal reciprocal arrangement with any club, out of courtesy, a resident guest who maintains membership
with another country club, may bill their incurred charges back to their account at said country club upon payment of a $10 administrative
fee. Dependent children resident guests (under the age of 18) may not bill incurred charges back to their account at another country club.
Charges incurred by dependent children resident guests must be billed to the membership account of the Princess Anne member by whom the
guest is accompanied.
Non-Resident Guests l PACC Rules & Regulations l Article XII, Section C
Key revisions includes:
• A new, one-day guest card option
• Adjustments to the guest card fee structure
• Non-resident guests may now reserve tee times five days in advance, previously seven days
A Non-Resident guest shall be defined as one who lives anywhere outside of the city limits of Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth, or
Chesapeake. Non-Resident guests may be entertained by a member on the same basis as resident guests, except that a Non-Resident guest
may, at the personal request of the sponsoring member, be issued a guest card enabling the guest, including his or her spouse and children, to use
the club’s facilities without being accompanied by the sponsoring member.
A member may not request more than two (2) guest cards per month. Non-Resident guests may attain no more than (1) one guest card in
a calendar year. A guest card may be issued for a period of seven (7) consecutive days. Guests are prohibited from inviting other guests to the
club. Guest card holders may reserve a tee time up to five days in advance.
Guest Card Fees:
One-Day Card: $25
Seven-Day Regular Card (includes access to dining and fitness facilities): $75
Seven-Day Comprehensive Card (includes access to all club amenities): $150
In addition to this rule change, we will also implement a change to an internal working policy regarding unaccompanied, non-
resident guests visiting the Princess Anne from other country clubs. Previously, we have graciously extended our non-resident
guest card program reciprocally to members of other country clubs. Moving forward, non-resident guests without sponsorship
from a Princess Anne member will be limited to a one-day guest card.

used everything we could to stop the water until finally a brave

DAVID GIVENS
Senior Archaeologist, Jamestown Rediscovery
Thinking Inside the Box: Using Modern Tools to Understand Jamestown’s Past
Since 2010, the Jamestown Rediscovery team has discovered three of the top ten archaeology finds in the world
as defined by “Archaeology Magazine.” These finds, evidence of cannibalism, the first protestant church and
four burials of the “founding fathers” of the colony were all located within fifty feet of each other in the center of David Givens
the 1607 James Fort. Come learn the advanced techniques including digital modeling, radiographic and isotopic
information, that aided in the identification and understanding of James Fort’s earliest colonists.
Mr. Givens was raised on a farm in Blacksburg, Virginia where his passion for archaeology started at an early age. After attending Virginia
Commonwealth University, he began a career in historical archaeology in the Chesapeake region. Working with the Rediscovery program
from the onset, David joined the Jamestown team in 2001 as a full-time staff member. Recently, he attended the University of Leicester
where he finished his graduate work with distinction and was the recipient of the 2014 Jamestown Society Fellowship.

Below are a few of the changes and the reasons for these changes: How to Drop a Ball
Time for Ball Search
HOW TO DROP A BALL Repairing Spike Marks
Old Rule | The player must stand erect and drop the ball from Leaving Flagstick in the Hole
shoulder height Relaxed Rules in Penalty Area
New Rule | Hold the ball above the ground, from any height ( even 1”)
and let the ball fall through the air without it touching anything. Princess Anne Living | Summer 2017 36
Why the Change | It prevents the player from being penalized for a
technical viola on, it speeds play and is less likely that a re-drop will
be required.
TIME FOR SEARCH
Old Rule | Ball must be found within 5 minute
New Rule | Ball must be found within 3 minutes
Why the Change | To speed up play both by limi ng the me and by
encouraging players to play a provisional ball.
REPAIRING SPIKE MARKS
Old Rule | Only ball marks and old hole plugs could be repaired on the
pu ng green.
New Rule | Damage on the pu ng green would be defined to include
all types of damage (spike marks, shoe damage indenta ons, etc.)
Why the Change | The philosophy is to allow the player to have a
smooth surface for pu ng. This change eliminates another penalty
trap for players repairing damage. The thinking is that this will not
delay play for most players.
LEAVING THE FLAGSTICK IN THE HOLE
Old Rule | The player incurs a penalty if his ball strikes the una ended
flags ck or accidentally strikes an a ended flags ck a er making a
stroke from the pu ng green.
New Rule | No penalty for striking an una ended flags ck or
accidentally striking an a ended flags ck a er a stroke from the
pu ng green.
Why the Change | To help with pace of play. The flags ck is as likely to
disadvantage the player as it is to help him.
RELAXED RULES IN PENALTY AREA
Old Rule | Touching the ground or moving /touching loose impediments
in a hazard resulted in a penalty.
New Rule |“Penalty areas” are treated the same as the “general area” of
the course in regard to these ac ons.
Why the Change | Applica on of the Rule was not prac cal in many cases
resul ng in many complicated and confusing excep ons. The purpose of a
“penalty area” is give a player op ons when it is imprac cal or impossible
1. to play the ball as it lies, not to make the shot more difficult.

marks” or “what’s the best way to repair ball marks?” Candidly,
there are multiple ways to repair a ball mark and multiple tools
that will help this procedure, but I always relay a simple saying
that should help your process, “Get the brown down and tap it
down.” It sounds a little goofy, but hopefully it’s a catchy theme to remember a simple process.
As the first part of the quote goes, “get the brown down,” we just need to get any “brown” dirt down in subsurface. As you can
probably tell, the exposed dirt will not allow any grass to grow back in the ball mark. On the contrary, if you get the brown dirt
back underneath and expose the leaf blades, it will allow the plant to generate new growth, replacing the ball mark.
In the second part of the saying, “tap it down,” just take the bottom surface of the putter head and flatten any disruption you
might have made. The smooth surface will allow the next golfer an uninhibited path to the hole location.
Please see a gentle reminder below from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America.

Tennis Talk
By John Fraser
I trust that you are all in full summer mode, enjoying all it has to offer! We hope you will find time to come out and enjoy
your tennis facility, whether it be getting some exercise with friends, jumping into one of our many programs or taking a
lesson. I wanted to make a special effort to reach out to those who have played in the past but never took it up after joining
the club whether it was due to time constraints or simply not feeling like there is anything offered that you would feel
comfortable trying. That goes to for those of you who are interested but are beginners and need a little assistance getting
started. To that end, I’m going to offer some free “starter” clinics to those who would fit those descriptions. These clinics will
take place on the middle Saturday of each month of the summer at 11:00 am. Please sign up for these by calling the shop.
Also, I want to remind everyone that we do set up matches for you. If you are looking for a singles game or a doubles group,
please don’t hesitate to reach out to either Mary or myself. We’re happy to assist you.The bigger the pool, the easier it will be
to match you up..
Here are four good reasons to be a tennis player:
There was an article published on the Health IQ Life Insurance website that said:
• Playing tennis just three hours per week cuts the risk of early mortality by 50%.
• People who play twice a week have 17% lower body fat than similar aged non-tennis players.
• HDL (“the good cholesterol”) is 16% higher in male tennis players and 11% in female players.
• Maximal oxygen consumption is a whopping 40% higher for male players and 32% for female players!
USPTA Mid-Atlantic Convention
This year’s convention
was held at Belle
Haven Country
Club, a beautiful,
sprawling club
located in the heart
of Alexandria, just a
mile from the Old
Town District. Our
tennis professionals
always look forward
to it as it’s a chance to
network with other
area pros as well as
hear many interesting
speakers from around
the world. Workshops started at 8:00 am and went through to 6:00 pm, Friday through Sunday. It was quite a lot to take in.
Topics range from fitness and injury prevention drills to court construction and maintenance, to running tournaments and
kids’ programs. We always appreciate our Club and our members who support our continuing education programs so that
we can remain at the cutting edge of our profession.

John’s Tip of the Month
Groundstroke Tip:
Lift The Ball On Your Groundstrokes!
Here’s an idea that can help you
with your topspin groundstrokes. In
order to hit great groundstrokes, you
have to LIFT the ball up over the
net! To me, this is by far the most
important thing for almost any
player.
What do I mean by lifting the ball?
Lifting the ball means moving the
racquet with the entire arm, from
low to high. It doesn’t matter if
you are hitting a forehand, one-
handed backhand or a two-handed
backhand, the physics involved are
the same!
Almost all recreational players that I see swing too horizontally on a rather straight
line and not enough from low to high. This results in lots of balls landing in the net
and is the number one mistake I see made on the tennis court!
One of the reasons most players swing too horizontally is that they see their target
through the net. Looking through the net you are looking at your target on a
downward sloping line, which is why people tend to swing that way. I am certain that
people would miss a lot less in the net if
you couldn’t look through the net.
Sometimes on television, you see these
great animations where they show the
flight-path of the ball. Those lines always
have a really nice arc, looking something
like this. In order to get that kind of a
flight path, you need to lift the ball!
So, next time you go out on the court
try lifting the ball more. Feel free to
exaggerate in the beginning!
