Questions 9 – 15 are based on the following passage

secrets and instead of heading for the door, they stick around 9 your bond with them grows

they tolerate any posturing that comes from the false self. With that realization, I remember
that whenever I do not want to live 14 the surface of life, I simply move into the deeper
waters where my true self waits to cool, refresh and renew.

For me, investing in time with my best friends is profoundly spiritual. My best friends

Questions 9 – 15 are based on the following passage

Black Panther barely feels like a Marvel film, or even a superhero film, at all. That is
very much 9 as a compliment, as this film offers a bold, fresh take on the superhero origin
story, a narrative that has been 10 stale for years. This story feels like a true 11 into the
unknown. The film boasts a 12 blend of fun-filled adventure and light political commentary.
Black Panther takes full advantage of its setting to show us a unique 13 visually stunning world
of Africa. It is certainly one of Marvel’s strongest efforts, and perhaps its most unique. 14 , the
movie has a couple of issues; the film is too long, and the majority of the action scenes are
dull. Strangely enough, that does not really matter as this superhero film derives 15 strength
from the setting and characters, rather than action sequences. All in all, Black Panther was
indeed a great movie to watch.

Questions 9 – 15 are based on the following passage.

Crab catching can be fun but it is only for those who do not mind the mud and the smell.
The crab catcher must be immune to the stench of the swamp. And of course he must have
stamina and a sense of adventure ___9___ struggling through the mud is just like a fly
struggling in a pudding.

The tools of a crab catcher are simple. All he needs are some traps and baits. He needs
a parang too to ___10__ his way through thick mangrove swamps. The trap itself is a simple
affair, crude and primitive in nature. A bamboo of about ten centimetres thick is cut into two
pieces, each measuring about 80 centimetres. They are bent slightly by heating them
___11____ a fire. A cross arch is formed by tying the mid section of the bamboo with a sturdy
string. A bait is ___12___ from the cross-joint by a string. Then it is submerged into the water.
All the crab catcher has to do now is to wait.

It all sounds so simple. ___13___ waiting in the mud is all but simple because it is actually
an invitation for the mosquitoes to attack. Therefore, a crab catcher must keep moving just to
keep the mosquitoes at bay. He must also keep brushing the ___14___ area of his body
because the mosquitoes sting by the thousands. A few hours later, he checks the traps. He

SET 1

Questions 26 to 31 are based on the following passage.

1 I have often been asked in the past to write the story of my life and my life’s
work. Somehow I was hesitant to do so. Perhaps, it is because I have always
shied away from anything that puts me in the fame. Some have even called me a
recluse. The truth is I am happiest living and working quietly.

2 What was it then that moved me to write this book? Certain words repeated 5
over the years hit home: “You must write. The story of Mayang, the largest hill
resort, does not belong to you alone. It’s a part of the country’s success story.

You have a duty to tell it. Your life is so rich in experience. It would be a waste
not to share it.” Yet, even as I wrote the first few chapters, I was ambivalent about
letting them see the light of day. Then came Mayang’s 40th Anniversary. On such 10

a significant occasion, I was persuaded to release the history of the hill resort,
essentially in pictorial form. “I am now in my eighties. It is time to tell the whole
story.”

3 When I was young, I was shy and an introvert. By a kind twist of fate, just after
leaving my native country on a boat for Malaya, I realized my handicap and made 15
a conscious effort to overcome it. I reached out positively with friendliness and
sincerity and won friends instantly. Since then, the same approach has never
failed me in interacting with others.

4 Parental teachings in a traditional Chinese upbringing have taught me to be
humble, polite and respectful to others. Those who know me know that I do not 20
put on airs. I can rub shoulders with tycoons and high officials; I can also get along
well with hawkers and manual workers.

5 When it comes to appointments, I have a habit of being punctual. Once I
promise to meet someone, I always make it a point to arrive 10 minutes before the
appointment time. To me, all appointments are important. I do not make excuses 25
to cancel an appointment just because the other party is not an important person.

6 I live a simple life with discipline. Normally, I get up early but have no fixed

time for going to bed. Sometimes, I stay up late going through documents or

pondering on certain issues. Even in my sleep, I would wake up with some ideas

and start making notes and drawing diagrams. 30

7 I am well known to my colleagues and staff as a tough taskmaster, but
those who work with me can vouch that I drive myself just as relentlessly as I do
others. I believe the way to succeed is not only to be efficient but also to be able

AKRAM@JABATAN PENDIDIKAN NEGERI TERENGGANU 28

to do things in the shortest possible time. In the commercial world, quick actions

and responses are essential. 35

8 I believe in the power of conviction. When I make a decision and believe

strongly that it is the right one, I will go head on with it, no matter what odds I am

up against. My decision to go ahead with the development of Mayang into a hill
resort is now a well-known example of how “stubborn” I could be when I made up

my mind. 40

9 Mayang and I have come a long way since I started building an access road

SET 2
Questions 26 to 31 are based on the following passage.

1 Social networking is a relatively new phenomenon in the world of the web.
Despite this, the success of social network companies like Facebook pioneering in
this mode of communication is testament to its overwhelming popularity among all
levels of society. The issue, though, is the effect social networking has on
individuals. Some claim that social networking has caused a lot of problems. How 5
far is this true?

2 To explore the effects of social networking, it is necessary to understand

what social networks are first. Social networks refer to specific websites or

applications set up to allow users to share information online. Social networking is

the activity of using them for communication. Supporters of social networking claim 10

that it helps them search for lost friends as well as develop new connections. It is

also said this helps socially awkward individuals to lead at least a semblance of a

normal life, allowing communication with real people without actually having to face

them. The information shared could range from simple statements to photos and

even videos. 15

3 Additionally, supporters of social networking claim other helpful functions
as well. For example, social networking helps students to share information
pertinent to their education easily. Furthermore, this service is provided for free.
As this happens, the quality of education of students practising this form of sharing
would eventually increase, producing more knowledgeable individuals who as 20
adults, in the future, would be more productive in the workforce. Virtual group work
could also be done easily using social networks and this does not only apply to
students. Impromptu business meetings can be held at any hour of the day and in
comfort as the people involved do not have to be physically present to share ideas.

4 Yet, as with anything invented by man, social networking also has its 25
detractors. In truth, these negative views are on occasion supported by evidence
of real occurrences in which social networking has caused problems in the lives of
the people who engage in the activity. One of the more obvious problems in social
networking is the tendency of its users to forget empathy. Imagine a user sharing
cute pictures of his or her children on the site. This in itself may not be an issue, 30
but what kind of effect will this have on other users who may have recently lost a
child? A user posts the fact that he is eating at a fancy restaurant. Other users who
see this may develop a negative opinion on the user in question. He may not realize
that his honest post may be misconstrued by others to be bragging behaviour.

5 Some social networks allow users to update their information on a regular 35
basis. This is particularly utilized by popular people like actors and singers in order
to update their status for their fans. Yet, when this need to inform everything to
everyone is practised by a common person, it takes on a scary and dangerous
possibility. There was a recorded case where a woman who recorded her
movements roughly every five minutes in a social network fell victim to robbery and 40
assault as the criminals had derived a pattern from the information she had shared.
This clearly supports the idea that social networking has caused a lot of problems.

6 Another issue that may lead to larger community difficulties is the loss of
communicative skills among users of social networks, particularly the young. We
can see the signs already. There are generally less real conversations between 45

AKRAM@JABATAN PENDIDIKAN NEGERI TERENGGANU 32

e-AKADEMI SPM / ACE IT! E-TUTORIAL

members of a group as they sit together in a gathering. Children do not talk to their 50
parents as they sit at the dining table. Friends do not talk to friends as they sit
beside each other at a park. Nowadays everyone seems to prefer looking at the
screens of their gadgets instead of facing a real person, even when the person in
question is sitting barely a metre away. Pity the global community if its members
forget how to converse like normal human beings.

7 Social networks are invented for noble purposes. It has proven to be
helpful for its users. Observation has shown how they make life easier and more
fulfilling. On the other hand, they have also been used by some people with broken
morals for nefarious purposes. Therein lies the conundrum. Does the fault lie with 55
the social networks themselves, or is the fault entirely ours?

Questions 26-31 are based on the following passage.

1 It was 11 pm on a dark, cloudless night last March when 28-year-old Azura
Lazim, a marketing clerk, left her sister’s house in the village of Kampung Pida with
her foster mother Hayati Ahmad, her fiancé Faizul Sholahudin and his best friend
Riduan Yusof, both were her colleagues.

2 Azura turned her Proton Saga onto a dimly lit road that ran parallel to a 15- 5
metre-wide waterway. The waterway is usually dry, but each March and September,
water is released from a nearby river so farmers can irrigate their paddy fields.
Tonight, water roared through.

3 Faizul told Azura to slow down – she must have been driving faster than she
realised. Before she could step on the brakes, the car spun out of control and plunged 10
into the waterway.Panic-stricken, they scrambled through the windows as the car
slowly sank into the four-metre-deep water. Battered by the current, they clung on to
the car and yelled for help.

4 Nearby, in Kampung Nara, 43-year-old Mahazir Khalid was visiting his father-
in-law with his wife Siti Hajar and their three children. They had stayed out late 15
because the next day was a holiday. Just before 11 pm, Mahazir decided to go home.

5 Shortly after driving out of the village, Mahazir saw a figure waving a light in
the middle of the road. As he slowed down, an old man told him there had been an
accident. Squinting hard in the darkness, Mahazir saw a half-submerged car in the
middle of the waterway. A group of teenaged boys was standing nearby, watching as 20
two of their friends scrambled out of water. “It’s too dark to see anything,” one of the
boys said, “and the undercurrents are very strong!”

6 As Mahazir pulled his car to the side of the road, his 14-year-old daughter Siti
screamed, “There are people in the water!” Mahazir, an experienced swimmer, leapt
from the car, threw off his shirt and shouted out a prayer. Then he dove into the dark, 25
swirling waters and swam towards the car. In the darkness he could not see anyone.
After thrashing around the car for two minutes, he found a middle-aged woman
clinging desperately to one of the doors. It was Hayati.

7 Grabbing her hand, Mahazir started swimming to the bank. By the time he
reached dry land, she was unconscious. Mahazir laid her on her back and pressed 30
on her abdomen to force the water out of her lungs. Gaining consciousness, Hayati
spluttered, “There are three more people in the car.”

8 Without hesitating, Mahazir plunged into the waterway again. He dove
repeatedly in a desperate search for the other victims. Just as he felt his lungs would
burst, he brushed against what felt like a hand. Grabbing it, he struggled to reach the 35
bank. Breathing hard as he fought against the current while towing Azura behind him,
he could feel his energy draining.

9 Then he saw his family, who were crying and calling out to him, and the boys
close by. “Help, I’m too tired to carry on,” Mahazir pleaded silently as he waved

frantically with his free hand. Stepping closer to the edge, they pulled him and Azura 40
out of the water.

10 Although he knew there were two other people in the car, Mahazir was too
exhausted to go back into the water. Instead, he waited with Azura and Hayati until
the Kubang Pasu Fire and Rescue Department arrived. Later, with Mahazir’s help,

the rescue team found the bodies of Faizul and Riduan ten metres downriver from 45
the car. Both men had probably drowned immediately after the crash.

11 A week after the rescue, Mahazir’s wife and children threw a thanks-giving
party with the help of the villagers. “I didn’t think I was going to make it that night,”

says Mahazir, who strained his shoulder and elbow during the rescue. “But the

thought of my family, who were crying out for me, helped me pull through.” 50

SET 4

Questions 26-31 are based on the following passage.

The passage below is an entry in an encyclopaedia on floods.

1 Loud vehicle honks, the screeching of tyres, the unpleasant roar of engines.

These were the things that greeted me that morning. I stood there on the veranda in

front of my flat, soaking it all in. Pollution, they call it. The level of sound was so loud

it could lead to permanent hearing damage. Living in the city all my life, I guess I have

developed certain immunity to it. 5

2 Glancing at my watch as I strode towards the lift, I knew I was still early for my

appointment. I took the bus to my destination that morning. When I got there, my

friend, Man the Tiger, was late as usual. He would always have excuses for being

late. There were no other friends that day. There were me, Man the Tiger and our

‘target’, whoever he or she might be. 10

3 When Man the Tiger finally arrived, I quickly jumped onto the back of his bike.
I had a few choices of expletives for him that day. He just laughed it off as usual. We

raced through traffic; weaving in between cars and flipping side mirrors as we pass.
We even raced against the traffic flow for a while to avoid a road block. I know it was

dangerous, but it was also a lot of fun! When we had our fill of fun, we went to a 15
restaurant far from our usual haunts for lunch. We made sure to pick a place that was
busy with an access of ‘targets’.

4 After eating, we did what we do best to get free food. We ran without paying.
That was why we selected a restaurant that was full. The owner probably did not
know we were gone. But Man the Tiger ran through a couple of red lights anyway, 20
just in case.

5 Sadly, the fun had to stop as we had work to do. We needed some extra funds
to acquire contraband for that night, so we began hunting for a victim. I took out a
specially made rubber-banded black cloth and used it to cover the back license plate.
Man the Tiger began canvassing the shop lots until we found a potential victim. I 25
could still remember – it was an old man wearing a white T-shirt. He was nonchalantly
carrying his sling bag on his shoulder and we slowly crept up on him from behind. At
the right distance, Man the Tiger began to speed up and I prepared to do my part.

6 Success! I snatched the bag and held it close to my chest as Man the Tiger
sped away, whopping with joy. That was when we heard the sirens and the next thing 30
I knew there was a loud crash and I was flying through the air. When I finally made
contact with the ground, everything went dark.

7 It turned out to be a trap set by the police. We were hospitalised and when we
got better, taken to court. Found guilty, we were taken to juvenile detention where we
had to mingle with people who were really disturbed and troubled. What we did, as 35
bad as they seemed to us, were nothing compared to what our new friends were
capable of doing.

8 At the detention centre, we were introduced to counsellors and motivators who
would try to change us and make us better members of the community. What they
faced was truly an uphill battle but they persevered through all the hardships. This 40
was when I met Puan Sabrina, and my life took a 180 degree turn. Despite what we

SET 5

Questions 26-31 are based on the following passage.

1 By the age of seven, I was used to being top of my class. I was the one who would
help other pupils who had difficulties. “Malala is a genius girl” my class fellows would
say. I was also known for participating in everything – badminton, drama, cricket,
art, even singing, though I wasn’t much good.

2 Around that time, we moved away from where we had been living to an area where 5
I didn’t have any friends. On our new road, there was a girl called Safina who was
a bit younger than me and we started to play together. She was a pampered girl
who had lots of dolls and a shoebox full of jewellery. But she kept eyeing up the pink
plastic pretend mobile phone my father had bought me which was one of the only
toys I had. My father was always talking on his mobile so I loved to copy him and 10
pretend to make calls on mine. One day, it disappeared.

3 A few days later, I saw Safina playing a phone exactly the same as mine. “Where

did you get that?” I asked. “I bought it in the bazaar,” she said. I realized now she

could have been telling the truth but back then I thought she is doing this to me and

I will do the same to her. 15

4 I used to go to her house to study, so whenever I was there, I would pocket her
things, mostly toy jewellery like earrings and necklaces. It was easy. At first stealing
gave me a thrill but that did not last long. Soon, it became a compulsion. I did not
know how to stop.

5 One afternoon, I came home from school and rushed into the kitchen as usual for a 20
snack. “Hello, Bhabi!” I called. “I’m starving!” There was a silence. My mother was

sitting on the floor pounding spices, brightly coloured turmeric and cumin, filling the

air with their aroma. Over and over she pounded. Her eyes would not meet mine.

What had I done? I was very sad and went to my room. When I opened my

cupboard, I saw that all the things I had taken were gone. I had been caught. 25

My cousin Reena came into my room. “They knew you were stealing,” she said.
6 “They were waiting for you to come clean, but you just kept on.” I felt a terrible

sinking feeling in my stomach. I walked back to my mother with my head bowed.
“What you did was wrong Malala,” she said. “Are you trying to bring shame on us
that we can’t afford to buy such things?” “It’s not true!” I lied. “I didn’t take them.” But 30
she knew I had. “Safina started it,” I protested. “She took the pink phone that Aba
bought me.”

7 My mother was unmoved. “Safina is younger than you and you should have taught
her better,” she said. “You should have set an example.” “Don’t tell Aba,” I begged.

I apologized over and over again. I couldn’t bear for him to be disappointed in me. 35

It’s horrible to feel unworthy in the eyes of your parents.

8 My mother took me to say sorry to Safina and her parents. It was very hard. Safina
said nothing about my phone, which didn’t seem fair, but I didn’t mention it either.

9 Since that day, I have never lied or stolen. Not a single lie nor a single penny, not
even the coins my father leaves around the house, which we’re allowed to buy 40
snacks with. I have also stopped wearing jewellery because I asked myself,” What
are these baubles which tempt me? Why should I lose my character for a few metal
trinkets?” But I still feel guilty and to this day I say sorry to God in my prayers.

10 Aba soon found out why I was so sad. I could see in his eyes that I had failed him.
However, he told me that great heroes also made mistakes when they were children. 45
His words calmed me.
