Faced with a depressingly routine
pattern of poor starts that have set the
scene for loss after loss, Els needed a
response from his team, in what has
been their Achilles heel over time –
the opening Fourball and Foursomes
matches. In 2017, the Americans
annihilated the Internationals to
lead 8-2 before the weekend and in
a bid to turn this around, Els and
his support team left no statistical or
course knowledge stone unturned in a
meticulous preparation.

At the end of the first day, a 4-1
lead would have been more than Els
could have imagined. Splitting the
points in the Friday Foursomes, despite
a late surge by the Americans who
birdied the final hole in two matches to
claw back crucial ½ points, would have
inspired confidence that this could
finally be the drought-breaking year.

The weekend’s 36-holes of
Fourballs and Foursomes would always

Although the U.S. team won the

matches and gripping scenes that had

There’s a standing joke that Rodriguez would prefer to hit his
shots into the bunker rather than the green, as not being known for
his skill with the flat stick, he would stand a better chance of getting
the ball closer to the hole than he would on the green.

When the Champions Tour was in its infancy, Rodriguez was
a regular fixture at the top of the Sand Saves stats. He led the list
in 1990 and was in the Top-10 six further times between 1988 and
1994, but it was a skill ‘Cheech’ had always possessed. He was named
Golf Magazine’s All-America sand player for 1979 and many of his
contemporaries would be quick to give his name when asked who was
the best bunker player they have seen.

FEATURE BEST BUNKER PLAYERS IN THE GAME Simon Bruty /Allsportsrt

Seve Ballesteros Harry How/Getty Images

Never doubt anyone who learned to play the shots from a beach
and later, and more famously, from a car park!

The lessons were never lost for the young Spaniard when he
began playing golf with a 3-iron on the beach at Pedrena. In his
youth, Ballesteros learned to move and manage the club and the
ball with almost imperious confidence and consummate skill.
Throughout his career he continued to enjoy demonstrating how he
could escape from deep bunkers by opening up a straight-faced club
and cutting under the ball.

He showed he could play effectively from the sand near and far.
In his 1983 Ryder Cup Singles match against Fuzzy Zoeller, the
Spaniard played a 3-wood from a fairway bunker on the 18th when
many would have chosen to blast back to the fairway with a wedge.
From 245 yards, he picked the ball cleanly, ended up just off the
putting surface and got up and down for the half.

Paul Azinger

Azinger was highly regarded as one of the best players to
perform out of greenside bunkers. The Zinger built a reputation
for playing incredible escapes from the sand despite the pressure.

The American’s PGA TOUR Sand Saves stats were
impressive and he led the rankings in 1986, 1987 and 1990.
Azinger won fame because he produced amazing sand saves
during the tense moments of a tournament.

In the 1993 Memorial, he holed out from a near-impossible
spot on the 72nd hole to win the tournament by a shot. To get
the ball close, he had to almost leave it in the sand, but he judged
it to perfection and it rolled into the cup. In the 2002 Ryder Cup,
he (and the US team) looked buried when he found sand on the
18th at the Belfry. But, somehow, he holed out to keep American
hopes alive.

The Black Knight is well known for his work ethic and worked
for hours on end perfecting most parts of his game, including his
bunker shots.

There remains an amusing tale when he was practising shots
from a bunker in Texas. A person wearing a ten-gallon Stetson hat
stood watching him hole a shot from the sand, calling out to him
with a US$50 wager if he could pot another. He did so and did it
again when it went up to US$100.

While he exuded confidence from the sand each time he
played, Player left his mark for his generosity, sharing all his tricks
and inside knowledge with other players, especially his native
South Africans, many of whom credit him for improving their
performance from the soft stuff.
