ADOLPH (Pop) SCHAUDER:
The story of the Schauder family would not be complete without mention of Adolph (Pop) Schauder
who in the words of the Yiddish novelist Mendel Mann was;
“a legendary figure whose name and fame has spread from Paris to Buenos Aires”
In his lecture in Cape Town on 26 August 2001 entitled
“SONCEBA”: He who strives for mercy. The life of Adolph Schauder.
David Scher speaks of Adolph Schauder as “a man who in his 65 years of public service, without formally
entering party politics, dedicated himself to conciliation and the building of bridges
of goodwill amongst all sections of the population”.
While searching through old photos and documents I came across the photo below of Zeida with
“Pop” Schauder and between them a Rabbi who I could not identify.
I wrote to my cousin Val Abratt (Schauder) and immediately received the reply below;
Dear Cyril,
What a wonderful picture!
The rabbi is the famous Rav Kehaneman, Rosh Yeshiva of the Ponevez yeshiva.
I know this to be a fact because we have a companion picture there a Kiddush cup is being presented to Pop.
The cup has a long inscription describing the event and this is the cup we use on Shabbat!
“The presentation of the cup took place at Bnei Brak where the Rav was Rosh Yeshiva at the time (early 60’s).
Pop had given substantial donations to this yeshiva over many years and so they wanted to honour him.

THE OWSIANICK/ LEWIN FAMILY:
Joyce Beryl Owsianick, was born in Klerksdorp on 9th December 1929.
She was the youngest daughter born to Granny and Oupa and she had her
school education in Klerksdorp.
Joy studied at The University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg and graduated
with a degree of B.Sc (Bachelor of Science).
In 1949 (9 December), she married Arthur Lewin in Klerksdorp.
After their marriage, they set up home in Klerksdorp
and they had an only child;
Estelle Ann Lewin b. 13 October 1951
Estelle matriculated from King David High School, Victory Park,
Johannesburg, in 1968 and she was Head Girl during her matriculation year.
Estelle graduated B.A from Wits University
Estelle’s career has been related to
Psychology.
Estelle has PH.D (London)
From 2000 till the present she has
worked as an Executive Coach and
as a Facilitator for an international
CEO organisation called YPO.
“Our four grandchildren, Harlan,
Sibi, Lucy and Caleb are the joy and
fun in my life right now!”
Estelle, Arthur, Joy at Estelle’s graduation. Brian Doctor QC is a trial lawyer
and practices law in London.
His degrees BA LLB (Wits) and
BCL (University of Oxford
He has practised as a Silk in a
number of jurisdictions, including
England and South Africa.
Arthur Lewin qualified as a dentist at the Oral & Dental Hospital, University of
Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in 1949 and joined the dental practice of
Dr. Hertzenberg in Klerksdorp
Arthur worked in Klerksdorp 1949 to 1962 and then the family moved to
Johannesburg where he opened and conducted an extremely successful dental
practice until his retirement.
He was born in Oudtshoorn. His father was educated in Germany as an
industrial chemist, whilst his mother came from Swellendam.
Arthur enrolled in the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of the
Witwatersrand after he matriculated. His peers do not remember him for his
academic prowess but rather as the cheerleader of the Wits students at inter-
varsity meetings against Tukkies for two different years. Prof. Phillip Tobias
told him when he joined the Senate of Wits that he would never have thought a
cheerleader would ever have a seat in the Senate.
Arthur Lewin can be regarded as the doyen of fixed prosthodontics in South
Africa.
In 1969 he was offered and accepted the chair of the Department of Restorative
Dentistry and he held this positon until compulsory retirement 1991.
Prof. Arthur Lewin published numerous papers and lectured throughout the
world.
On a personal level – Arthur Lewin was my mentor. It was because of him that
I studied dentistry and all of what I learned from him gave me the basis for a
successful professional career.
There is a saying that behind every successful man there is a woman.
Aunty Joy was the epitome of that woman and there was never a moment that
she was not there to support Arthur in all of his life’s work.
The Lewin home in Johannesburg was a second home to me during my years at
university and Aunty Joy was as a second mother to me.
Joy passed away 27 August 2010 and Arthur passed away on 28 July 2016.
They are buried side by side in the Jewish Cemetery in Johannesburg.

HAROLD & EDIE KAUFMAN:
Harold and Edie (Rome) were married in Cape Town on 3rd September 1961.
When I reflect back and think of people who had a major influence as to my being in
Israel then my cousin Harold is in the forefront.
One of my earliest recollections of Harold was in 1956 (I was 14 yrs. old) when he was
on his way to Israel to enroll into the Israeli Army and he visited our family in
Klerksdorp.
We were playing “ping pong” on the lawn at our house and Harold told me all about
Israel and the Israeli army.
As a young boy in Habonim, this made a very big impression on me especially when a
few months later he sent a photograph of himself in a paratrooper uniform
The next time I met Harold and the first time that I met Edie was in November 1961, a
few months after they were married, and I was in Cape Town, with my parents, to
attend the wedding of my cousin Isaac Karpas to Yvonne Horowitz.
The year before (1960) Zeida had made Aliyah and Harold told me that he and Edie
intended to make Aliyah within the next few years.
They made Aliyah in February 1963 and at first, they were in the Absorption Centre,
Ulpan Borochov, in Givatayim.
Soon after completing the ulpan course they moved into an apartment in Petach
Tikvah and this is where all three of their children were born
Ilan Israel was born on 9th September 1963.
Ronen Avraham was born on 1st November 1966.
Talya Ziporah was born on 13th August 1971.
On my visit to Israel in 1967, I stayed with the family in Petach Tikvah and shared a
room with Ilan.
Ilan died on 22 April 1990 in a helicopter crash while on active reserve duty in the
Israeli Air Force
He was an exceptional young man who excelled in everything that he did which
included not only being an Officer Pilot in the Israeli Air Force but also an outstanding
student at the Haifa Technion where he was studying to become an architect.
When Norma and I made Aliyah together with Aaron and Sara in August 1974, Harold
and Edie were there at every turn to help us and to make the process as easy as
possible.
For this, both Norma and I are forever grateful
Ronen married Efrat Merchavi on 9th June 1991 and they have three children.
Dan Ilan – born 5th February 1994
Ram Bernard – born 24th February 1998
Ben Kaufman – born 6th August 2004
Talya married Yaacov (Kobi) Maimon on 25th March 1997
and they have three children.
Roni – born 10th April 1999
Adi – born 1st May 2002
Ilai – born 7th June 2008.
Zeida writes to Harold regarding his upcoming marriage to Edie.
ISAAC KARPAS:
Isaac Karpas was born to Louis and Jane Karpas on 18th February 1938 in a
small village called Koffiefontein, South Africa.
Jane was the elder of Dad’s two sisters, the younger one being Rachel (Raie)
At age 8 his mother Jane died and his father Louis decided that it would be best if
he were raised in Cape Town.
Raie married Nat Goodman on 29th December 1946.
One month later in January 1947, at age 9, Isaac went to live in Maitland and this
is where he was raised by Raie and Nat.
I asked Isaac to describe his early days in Maitland and he wrote to me;
“I came to live in Maitland in January 1947, 2 months after my mother died.
Raie Kaufman married Nathan Goodman in December 1946 and 1 month after the
marriage (I arrived in Maitland) and they had a son of 9 years old.
At this point my knowledge of Judaism was almost nonexistent and I started lessons
with Zeida.
Unlike my pals, there was no bunking of cheder lessons, as whenever Zeida was
finished in the woodwork room, I was ready or else !!!!!
Believe you me, when he got cross and banged the big heavy table that we worked at,
on one side the other side went up in the air,,,,,,,i would never have wanted to receive
one of his “klaps”.
I went to Maitland Public School till Standard 5 and then to SACS in Cape Town.
From the age of 10, I got involved with Zionist Youth activities and spent many years
with the Annual Young Israel Camp in Lakeside.
Yvonne grew up in Maitland and this presented the opportunity for us to get together
and be married for just short of 53 years, and produced 2 children and 5
grandchildren.
Sadly, Yvonne passed away on 28th August 2015 - י״ג ֶּב ֱאלּול תשע״ה
Isaac and Yvonne had two children:
• Louis born 24th November 1962
Louis married Lauren Nochomovitz and they have two children
Josh born 27th March 1996
Amy born 6th December 1999
Sadly, Lauren passed away on 26 June 2015 - ט׳ ְּב ַתּמּוז תשע״ה
• Lily-Esta born 22nd January 1965
Lily-Esta married Trevor Reich on 27 May 1990 and they have three children
Max born 5th March 1993
Dean & Jake (twin) born 13th May 1996.
Isaac Karpas passed away early morning

Phillip writes:
I start the history from the period that we lived in Vanrhynsdorp.
My Dad ran the local filling station and car sales for the Joffe family in the
town and besides filling up petrol for cars the filling station also supplied fuel
to light aircraft that landed at the landing strip in the municipal area of
Vanrhynsdorp.
My Dad used to bring the new cars that were for sale by driving them to
Vanrhynsdorp from all over the country.
I lived in Vanrynsdorp till the age of 6 when we all moved to CapeTown -
first at our grandparents home at 94 Maynard Street, Gardens and after
about 6 months we moved to Vredehoek, were we lived for about 10 years
and then we moved to Highlands estate.
I went to Herzlia School till Std. 5 after which I went to SACS where I did
my Matric in 1956.
In 1957 I went to UCT for 6 months and then went to work at Saldanha Bay
canning offices prior to going to the Machon in Israel in 1958 for a year.
On return from the Israel I went to do my apprenticeship in Fitting and
Turning at Spilhaus.
In 1963 I went to work at Saldanha Bay Canning Company for a year and
then at Leyland Motors as a Mechanic until leaving on Aliya via Europe
arriving in Israel Sept 1965.
At first I worked as a mechanic for 6 months and then in June 1966 I moved
to TWA (Trans World Airlines) starting off as a Stores Keeper and then a
budget supervisor and eventually Personnel and Administration Manager.
I married Margalit Greenbaum in 1970 and moved to Givataim where both
our daughters, Nechama and Hagit where born.
Nechama married Yoel Ladin on the 23 August 1995 and they have 4
children:
Lior, Ron, Matan and Noam
Hagit married Ami Davis on the 1 September 2002 and they have 5 children:
Nariya, Eti, Hallel, Yair and Shira.
In September 2000 we moved to Raanana which is where we live today.
SHEILA GILINSKY (KAUFMAN)
Sheila and Zeida
Sheila is the daughter of Toby (Tobias) and Diana Kaufman (Kiel) and she was born in
Cape Town on 24 October 1950.
Her mother, Diana, passed away when Sheila was 9 months old and she was raised by her
Dad and her grandparents, Rolly and Morry Kiel at 8 Norfolk Road, Sea Point.
The Kiels and Toby and Sheila lived in a Semi-detached house and later on after I met
Norma, I discovered that the neighbours were the Feltenstein family, Jean, Stella and their
children Arona, Michael and Alexander– Norma’s cousins.
The same Stella (6 yrs. old) referred to in the picture of the Maitland Talmud Torah 1941,
sitting in the same row as her father Aaron Flaxman who was the Hebrew teacher at the
time and Zeida who was the Reverend of the Shul.
Sheila matriculated at Herzlia High School in Cape Town in 1967 and she was Head Girl of
the School in her matriculation year.

Here is some of the correspondence between Zilla- Jane and me regarding family history.
Cover page of Tages Buch – my query re one of the words.
1. =ויאתיוthat will come. From the word =אתאcome, which is originally Aramaic,
but is used in Hebrew as well. Here it is in the 3rd person plural imperfect (i.e.
not come about yet, which in our modern understanding of things is something
like the future). So what it means is “the memories of (things in) my youth that
have happened and that are yet to come about/happen.”
With regard to Zeida’s mother’s name:
“I think her name was Hiyena (my second – Yiddish name [and Aunty Jane’s name as well])"
Spelled ( חינעCheyna)
With regard to Bobba’s parents: Feige and Isaac Joffe
“So Feige’s full name was Elke Feige, and her husband was Isaac Joffe and he was a
Rabbi. Not sure if you had that info”
