Uncle Hyman passed away on 2nd August 1994:

Hyman Schauder Tombstone - Port Elizabeth

The last time that Norma and I saw Aunty Eff was in 2003 when we visited and
spent a day with her at her apartment in Port Elizabeth.

Aunty Effie is my godmother and I remember her especially for the holidays that I
spent in Port Elizabeth together with her and Uncle Hyman, Don and Val.
The holiday that especially comes to mind was in 1958 (I finished Std. 9)
Dad had been appointed the Railway Medical Doctor in Klerksdorp and one of the
perks was free train travel for the family anywhere in South Africa.
So I was presented with a roundtrip ticket from Kroonstad to Port Elizabeth to
Cape Town and back to Klerksdorp.
I took my set of golf clubs and off I went on my journey (with a packet of 20
Rembrandt cigarettes) and when in P.E. Effie arranged for me to play golf at
Wedgewood Golf Club with our cousin Rene Solomon’s husband Sidney and his
brother Donald and when I came back to 14a Park Drive I showed her my golfing
skills by hitting some balls from the lawn into the Valley.
One evening she organised a dance party and invited some of the PE. Youth and it
was really a wild bash – lots of noise and mess – but a lot of fun.

30 July 2017:

Shortly after publishing the first edition of my project Effie Passed away on 12
July 2017 – aged 92.
Aunty Effie was a most gracious, kind and loving lady and the obituary below,
pays tribute to many of her virtues.
She will be remembered by all as a truly lovely lady.
