05TH KUCHING CITY SCOUT GROUP MESSAGE Mr. Thien Hoong Yeee Group Scout Leader Dear Fellow Scouts, Scouting has been a life-changing journey for me. I still remember how it looks like when I first joined 05th Kuching City Scout Group, it was a rainy Sunday afternoon, joining as a new recruit in my 1st weekly meeting where we were being grouped in a classroom with Scouters and a few of the Rover Scouts. Our then Group Scout Leader asked the crowd, “Anyone of you here want to be a King Scout?”, without hesitation, I raised my hand. He then proceeded to say, “This is where you start your journey.”. Years after, with the guidance, trainings and support from the Scout Group, I’ve managed to achieve the King Scout Award. We have been through a lot of learnings, trainings and camping. Selfdiscipline, respect to others and time management are what I’ve learnt and made me who I am today. Scout is merely an uniform unit to some but to me, it is a society in smaller scale. You learn how to deal with situation, how to lead and manage people, problem solving and to strive hard for what you want to achieve. These aspects really helped me later in life especially after setting foot into the real world. Through my time volunteering as Scouter, I have seen many talents and potentials our Scout members possessed, and it is always rewarding when our Scout members achieving their aspirations through Scouting and bring about change to the people surrounding them or community. I would like to thank my team of Scouters, who are committed and enthusiastic, to empower the youth to become future leaders and responsible citizens. I would also like to thank the school for the trust and confidence in Scouters, to let us groom the Scout members through Scouting values. Not forgetting the ever-supportive parents, entrusting us on their children’s Scouting journey and life. My advice to my fellow brother and sister Scouts, whether you are struggling with difficulties or tough times during your Scouting journey, don’t give up on your dream because one day when you look back, you will never regret all the hard works you have put in. I hope that our Scout’s group will continue to thrive and flourish for many more years to come and will always uphold the Scout’s Promise and Law and live by the Scout’s motto: Be Prepared. Happy 60th anniversary, 05th Kuching City Scout Group! “DO A GOOD TURN DAILY!” Yours in scouting, Thien Hoong Yeee Group Scout Leader I am honored and delighted to write this message for our Scout’s group 60th anniversary magazine. It is hard to believe that it has been six decades since our group was founded, and I am proud to be a part of this amazing community. 7
古晋市第五童军团 Chan Fang Liang Assistant District Commissioner Adult Training/ Senior Scout Kuching City District Scout Council First, I would like to thank the 05th Kuching City Scout Group for giving me an opportunity to drop a few words in this column of the Scout Magazine, in conjunction with its Diamond Jubilee Celebration. Scout Group for making it this far – a 60-year of foundation since 1963. Without the support of dedicated scout members, leaders, supportive parents, teachers, school, and Kuching City District Scout Council, we are not going to make it until today. Thank you for creating this great moment together! I have joined 05th Kuching City Scout Group since 1987, started as a member and now serve as an Assistant District Commissioner in charge of Adult Training and Senior Scout, holding on to my one and only principle – “Once a Scout, Always A Scout”. I do hope that Senior Scouts who are graduating soon from Kuching High School will come back and continue to guide and help our Junior Scouts to grow. Always bear in mind that a Scout is never taken by any surprise. He knows exactly what to do when anything unexpected happens. As a Scout, you will learn to communicate clearly, work as a team, guide others in solving problems and lead by examples too. Leadership is one of the most valuable skills that you can learn from Scouting. I can assure you that you will never be able to learn all these soft skills from your textbook. Trust me, these skills will come in handy in your future! Lastly, I hope that 05th Kuching City Scout Group will continue to prosper as always and celebrates its Platinum Jubilee in 10 years’ time. Thank you. “ GROW WITH SCOUTING ” MESSAGE Mr. Chan Fang Liang Assistant District Commissioner 8
05TH KUCHING CITY SCOUT GROUP Heartiest congratulations to the Organizing Committee of the 05th Kuching High School Scout group's 60th Anniversary celebrations. Throughout these 60 years of glory and pride we have witnessed the many achievements and awards. The many ‘FIRSTS’ achieved were too numerable to mention. Indeed this makes 5th Kuching one of the most active, disciplined and successful groups in Kuching City District and probably also in Sarawak. What makes 05th Kuching what it is today, is due to the dedication, determination, commitment and concerted efforts coupled with good leadership and plannings of our leaders (past and present). This will not be possible without the close cooperation and support of the school authority, teachers-in-charge, Kuching City District Scout Council, Sarawak Scout Council, parents and the general public. Leaders pay to do the job and not paid to do the job in carrying their programs geared towards character building of the members (which is the main aim in Scouting) so that they will be responsible and good citizens. For your great sacrifices to the group all these glorious years, I double salute you. Let us be reminded that, Scouting provides the opportunity for members to realize their full potential in achieving their goals and leadership training. These include the Badge schemes in the different sections. The highest award is the King’s Scout Badge. Use the fundamentals of scouting, the patrol system in executing your programs. Members are encouraged to participate in programs and activities at different levels from group to international levels as well as community services. It is a lifetime experience and it will also enrich your lives, nobody can take it away from you. This Diamond Jubilee serves as an inspiration to the present members and those who are to come after. Together with the strong scout tradition of the group, may they keep 05th Kuching High School Scout Group flag flying high and continue to grow in strength to reach another new level of achievement in the years ahead. “ WORK WITH ME AND NOT FOR ME, FOR TOGETHER WE CAN ACHIEVE MORE ” Charles Yeo Hui Chuan Teacher-in-charge/GSL 1978-2006 Wishing all a happy Diamond Jubilee. I continued my Scouting life when moved to stay in KHS in 1969; became a Scouter at 18 years old by choice, and at the same time, a Rover Scout of 05th Kuching KHS Scout Group. KHS Scout Group has its ups and downs in Scouting adventures’ journey for the last 60 years. I remember that the Scout Group had only one patrol, the ‘Eagles’ with seven Scouts remained in Scout meetings at the end of 1969. However, the membership grew rapidly to 100 members in the 70’s. To recall our group’s achievements, the group received awards, such as Model of Scout Group, Champion in Kuching District Obstacle Race, Best Job-Week Scout Group.
