The exchange program held at Institut Perguruan Batu Lintang, Kuching was attended by 3 Scouters and 4 senior Scouts. This event was designed to foster cultural sensitivity and promote international friendship, which can positively impact the personal and cultural development of young Scouts while strengthening the global Scouting community. On June 25, 2016, a one-day Campfire Course was held. The invited guest, the late Mdm. Valerie Kong, shared her vast campfire knowledge and experience to key points towards a successful campfire. After the lecture session, a magnificent campfire was lit by the school principal, Mr. Tan Kiang Tuang and Group Scout Leader, Mr. Chang Wee Khee. It was a memorable night where everyone gathered around the fire to bond, played games, sang songs, and enjoyed each other's company. It was a challenge towards backwood culinary skills, creativity and mentality. Both patrols prepared savory cuisine and exquisite handmade tableware where one patrol secured the second place in the competition. It was definitely a remarkable learning experience for the members. The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award serves as a worldwide framework for non-formal education and learning, urging young individuals to enhance transferable skills, boost fitness, embrace adventure, and engage in community volunteering. It guides young people in discovering their purpose, passion, and role in the world. In October 2016, our Scout Group celebrated the birth of Bronze Award recipients. These 14 awardees showcased significant commitment, fulfilling the internationally recognized award's requirements across four categories: voluntary service, physical recreation, skills, and an adventurous journey. 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022 2023 The Brooke Gallery (Fort Margherita) Visit EVENT HIGHLIGHTS 2017 On a perfect Saturday Morning, our group organised an outing to The Brooke Gallery at Fort Margherita. The gallery highlights the people, places and history behind the birth and development of Sarawak during the Brooke era. It was truly a marvelous experience and exposure to the White Rajahs’ contribution to the land of hornbill – Sarawak. To commemorate 105 years of Hong Kong Scouting, a jamboree unfolded from December 23rd to 27th, 2016, at Penny's Bay in north-eastern Lantau Island. Our group's contingent, comprising 18 Scout members and leaders, embarked on a journey aimed at establishing connections with peers from across the globe. The four-day event left an indelible mark, filled with thrilling adventures, cultural performances, campfire gatherings, and more. This Scouting brotherhood has flourished after the days we spent in Hong Kong Jamboree back in December 2016. Scouts of the World Award (SWA) Discovery Course Scouts of the World Award (SWA) is an award that offers the chance to Scouts to undertake a project of their choice within the themes of Peace, Environment and Sustainability and take action on their chosen issue. On July 9, 2017, our Rovers and senior Scouts had completed the SWA Discovery Course, aiming to develop skills and knowledge that will empower them to undertake a project that will make a sustainable impact on their local, national or international community, while developing their personal skills. Mr. Chang Wee Khee and Mr. Calvin Chong Kim Ching participated in the King’s Scout Standardizer Course organized by the National Training Team. This course is designed to equip Scout Leaders with the skills and knowledge needed to become King’s Scout evaluators. These evaluators play a crucial role in assessing senior Scouts and determining if they are qualify for the prestigious title of King’s Scout. In the history of SMK Kuching High, it had been a considerable amount of time since the last UUCC was organized. The event brought together 4 uniform units, collaborating to plan and execute a successful camp. Uniform bodies shared their skills and experiences, creating a platform for mutual learning. Exchange Program 2018 An exchange program to Kuala Lumpur was organised in May, 2018, the Scouts visited the World Scout Bureau, Global Support Centre (Kuala Lumpur), Rumah B-P (Headquarter of Persekutuan Pengakap Malaysia) and joined activities with the Scouts from Batu District of WP Kuala Lumpur. We felt lucky given the opportunity to form lasting relationships with Scouts from Batu District. 53

Our Rover crew received an invitation from Architect Wendy Teo to collaborate in constructing a magnificent bamboo pavilion, to be showcased at the Rainforest Fringe. Borneo Fringe Festival, Rainforest Music Festival 2018 As part of the Founder's Day celebration, a backwoods cooking competition took place at Sarawak Scout HQ on February 3, 2018, featuring representation from our group through four patrols. Each patrol dedicated effort to display their backwoods culinary skills, crafting delicious meals with unique styles and creativity. Notably, two senior patrols secured the 2nd and 4th places in this competition. 54

The team collected second-hand books and established a reading corner in Taska Bahasa Warisan Bidayuh Biatah in Kampung Benuk. Following the setup, the team initiated reading programs to further enhance English learning in the kindergarten. Kampung Benuk Reading Corner Community Service Project Backwoods Cooking Course Chef Eric Lim Ern Yao, from our 2004 Scout batch, joined the Backwoods Cooking course to impart his culinary expertise to our fellow scouts in attendance. The course focused on refining participants' cooking skills in natural settings, proving invaluable for future camping adventures and badge pursuits. Chef Eric conducted practical demonstrations, ensuring that everyone acquired essential skills for outdoor cooking. 55

Borneo Fringe Festival, Rainforest Music Festival 2019 The 23rd Kuching City District Camp, held at Chung Hua Middle School No.1 from August 31 to September 2, 2019, left a lasting impression. Our group, comprising 22 members divided into 2 girls and 1 boys patrol, participated actively. Throughout the camp, our patrols demonstrated their skills, earning 1st place in bamboo handicraft and 3rd place in camping standards and backwoods cooking. 56

This course is tailored to equip MoP coordinators with essential skills. It incorporated engaging activities like team-building games and project planning for group initiatives. Participants gained insights into logging service hours on the Scout.org platform and securing funding for projects. Upon course completion, participants received certificates and the sought-after MoP coordinators scarf, empowering them to effectively coordinate MoP activities. King’s Scout Standardizer Course Mr. Chang Wee Khee took the BPA Evaluator Course in Johor Bahru. This course equips evaluators with the skills to assess participants in the BPA program, which focuses on outdoor and leadership skills. It's a vital step to ensure the award's standards are upheld and participants receive their well-deserved recognition. Mr. Chan Fang Liang, Mr. Alvin Tang San Ming, Mr. Thien Hoong Yeee, and Ms. Lynn Yeo Siaw Ling took part in the King’s Scout Standardizer Course. This course is designed to equip them with the skills to become qualified evaluators in assessing senior Scouts and determining their eligibility for the King’s Scout award. 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022 2023 EVENT HIGHLIGHTS 2020 Course for Assistant Leader Trainers (CALT) Mr. Chang Wee Khee and Mr. Fu Juat Hian participated in the Course for Assistant Leader Trainers (CALT) which serves as the initial stage of the Trainer’s Training scheme, aiming to empower potential trainers to become proficient instructors, facilitators, counselors, and managers for Unit Leader training. Rover Investiture Ceremony In February 2020, a remarkable event took place as 4 Scouters, 4 Rovers, and 8 Rover Squires conquered Mount Kinabalu. At the halfway point of this Southeast Asian giant, a Rover Vigil was organised. This adventure marked a new chapter in their Scouting journey, pushing them beyond their comfort zones and creating lasting memories. It was a monumental achievement, and the flag of 05th Kuching proudly waved at the summit. 58
2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022 2023 SDG Weekly Challenge The SDG Weekly Challenge spanned 17 weeks, initiated by our group to provide an engaging opportunity for learning and making a positive impact on our world. Despite the shift to virtual activities amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Scouting remains dedicated to supporting sustainability, peace, and equality. Expanding our commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, we kicked off the initiative in May 2020. Each week, we introduced a new challenge and task related to one of the 17 SDGs, fostering understanding and encouraging members to contribute to global betterment. Virtual Camps EVENT HIGHLIGHTS 2021 The 05th Kuching Scout Group shifted to virtual activities amid the COVID-19 pandemic, hosting its first Virtual Camp in June and another in July. These virtual camps had the dual purpose of sustaining the Scouting spirit, which also served as an orientation for new recruits, primarily Form 1 and Form 2 members, as they embarked on their Scouting journey. A notable highlight was the successful Virtual Investiture ceremony for our 2020 recruits, showcasing our resilience in adapting to these challenging times. 59

This prestigious honor was recently bestowed upon Mr. Chang Wee Khee and Mr. Thien Hoong Yeee. The awards ceremony, set to be officiated by YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, the Chief Minister of Pulau Pinang and the Chairman of the Pulau Pinang State Scout Council, along with YB Tuan Soon Lip Chee, the State Executive Councillor for Youth and Sports, aimed to acknowledge the unwavering dedication and service of Scout Leaders during the challenging period of the Covid19 pandemic. Sibu Rover Expedition EVENT HIGHLIGHTS 2022 In celebration of Sarawak Day, our Rover crew embarked on an extraordinary 800km expedition to Sibu, exploring iconic landmarks across southern and central Sarawak. The journey culminated in a Rover Vigil at the Sibu Scout Headquarters, where two of our dedicated Rover Squires successfully fulfilled their requirements, officially ascending to the esteemed status of full-fledged Rover Scouts. This remarkable achievement marked a momentous milestone in their Scouting journey. 60

2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022 2023 Sarawak 1st Rover Moot Course for Assistant Leader Trainers (CALT) Ms. Lynn Yeo Siaw Ling participated in the Course for Assistant Leader Trainers (CALT) which serves as an essential step of the Trainer’s Training scheme with the goal of preparing potential trainers to become proficient instructors, facilitators, counselors, and managers for Unit Leader training. The Sarawak 1st Rover Moot, held from July 1 to 4, 2022, at Kem Matang, united Rover Scouts from Malaysia, Brunei, and Indonesia, fostering bonds and sharing Scouting values. The 05th Kuching Rover Crew dedicated four months to prep, clearing and restoring the site. They also served as a service team during the event and explored the Scout Exhibition at Kuching Waterfront, acting as guides, and helped to construct the camp gate. This gathering beautifully showcased Sarawak's culture and demonstrated Scouting's ability to nurture lifelong friendships and global understanding. 62

ANNUAL TRAINING CAMP (ANTAC) ANNUAL EVENT The Annual Training Camp (ANTAC) marks the beginning of the year end school holiday where Scouts gather for a transformative experience, spanning 5 days 4 nights, designed to sharpen members’ essential camping and outdoor survival skills, cultivate team discipline and strengthen the bond among the members. Participants engage in a diverse array of activities which includes the crafting of camp gadgets, pioneering projects, obstacle courses, station games, hiking, backwoods cooking, and a campfire, nurturing essential skills while creating long-lasting memories with the Scout brothers and sisters. While Scouting is all about learning and discipline, June Camp is like a colorful bonus chapter in our Scout journey. This special camp, held every year, offers us a chance to dive into a world of enjoyment, friendship , and shared experiences. At June Camp, our Scout members come together for days filled with thrilling activities, campfires, and the opportunity to strengthen their bonds. It's not just about having a great time; it's also a chance to learn essential life skills like teamwork and leadership through exciting games and activities. Imagine a place where laughter echoes around the campfire, where friendships grow stronger, and where valuable life lessons are learned in the most enjoyable way. The Rover Vigil is a profound and reflective ceremony that marks a significant milestone in the journey of Rover Scouts, symbolizing their deep commitment to the principles and ideals of Scouting. Rover Scouts who are about to enter the Vigil have usually undergone several tasks, during which they explore the deeper aspects of Scouting, examine their personal values, and contemplate their roles as active and responsible citizens. Throughout the ceremony, speeches are delivered, and words of encouragement are shared by the Scout Leaders, and Rover Squires will recite the Scout Promise followed by the presentation of the Rover Scout scarf. At the heart of our Scout group is the commitment to fostering leadership qualities among our members. Each year, we entrust the responsibility of leading our group to newly elected leaders chosen from within our members. These leaders play a pivotal role in steering our group toward success. To ensure our Scout members are well-prepared for these leadership roles, we organize annual courses where senior leaders generously share their wealth of experience. Through these courses, our members gain valuable insights into leadership, learning from those who have effectively led our group in the past. These sessions serve as a platform for former leaders to impart their knowledge and the lessons they've gleaned from their leadership journeys. 古晋市第五童军团 JOTA JOTI ANNUAL EVENT FIRST AID COURSE ANNUAL EVENT 05th Kuching Scouts actively participate in the Jamboree On The Air (JOTA) and Jamboree On The Internet (JOTI), fostering global connections with Scouts from 174 countries. These events provide technological exploration opportunities and engage members in educational activities promoting teamwork, cross-cultural understanding, and future-ready skills. In 2023, five 05th Kuching Rovers volunteered, leading sound vibration, resonance, and frequency experiments. This involvement not only underscores the Scouts' commitment to technological and cultural exchange but also highlights their enthusiasm for challenging and educational roles within the broader global Scouting community. In 2021, the 05th Kuching Scout Leaders and Rovers actively enrolled in a Basic First Aid (BFA), CPR, and AED course at the Clinical Simulation Centre, UNIMAS. The course aimed to equip Scouts with essential first aid skills, ensuring preparedness for emergency response. Hands-on learning covered sessions including adult CPR, AED usage, addressing choking scenarios, and sling and bandaging techniques. Recognizing the importance of staying current, the 05th Kuching Scouts reattended in 2023, renewing their first aid competency. This commitment underscores their dedication to acquiring and sustaining the skills crucial for effective emergency response. 73
古晋市第五童军团 On January 14, 2021, the 05th Kuching Rovers provided assistance at a flood relief center, distributing essential supplies like blankets, clothing, and food. They also assembled tents and facilitated the registration process for affected individuals. This experience was invaluable, offering the Rovers profound fulfillment in their collective efforts to alleviate suffering and contribute to their community. VOLUNTEERING AT FLOOD RELIEF CENTRE COMMUNITY SERVICE MATANG CAMP RESTORATION PROJECT COMMUNITY SERVICE In 2021, the Matang Camp Restoration Project was undertaken with the goal of preserving and enhancing the campsite, providing a better environment for outdoor activities. This initiative assessed Rover Scouts' outdoor skills, nurtured leadership, and promoted teamwork. Tasks included unclogging drains, removing debris, cleaning the barouk, and clearing logs from the pool. Beyond physical restoration, these activities developed practical skills and leadership qualities, enriching the Rovers' scouting experience. 74
PLOGGING COMMUNITY SERVICE Plogging, an eco-friendly fitness trend, encourages individuals to run or jog while collecting trash along the way. On October 12, 2019, the 05th Kuching Rovers actively participated in a plogging event at the Waterfront. Later, on February 12, 2020, the 05th Kuching City Rover Crew initiated its own plogging event, aiming to enhance community well-being, foster environmental consciousness, and contribute to a cleaner, healthier city. KUCHING MARATHON DUTY COMMUNITY SERVICE Since 2018, our group has been part of the Kuching Marathon service team, overseeing tasks such as managing the starting line and distributing finisher medals. 古晋市第五童军团 COVID-19 VACCINATION DUTY COMMUNITY SERVICE SALVATION ARMY CHARITY SALES COMMUNITY SERVICE From June to October 2021, the 05th Kuching Rovers actively volunteered at COVID-19 vaccination centers, including Tanah Puteh Health Clinic, SJK Chung Hua No.3, and MBKS stadium. Tasks included verifying MySejahtera QR codes for entry, aiding in registration, and guiding attendees to waiting areas. This demonstrated the Rovers’ commitment to local pandemic efforts, significantly contributing to community safety and well-being. The 05th Kuching Scouts annually contribute to the Salvation Army Charity Sale at the Association of Churches, Kuching, where homemade delicacies and handcrafts are prepared for sale, with proceeds donated to the Salvation Army, Kuching Corps. This initiative reflects the Scouts’ care and support, strengthening their commitment to community service by aiding those in need. 76
Annually, our Scout group engages in swimming duty, actively participating in the smooth execution of swimming competitions. Assigned roles include timekeeper, usher, runner and registration counter which are pivotal in ensuring the efficient execution of the event. Beyond community support, this active involvement provides our Scouts with valuable experiences, fostering teamwork and a strong sense of responsibility. SWIMMING COMPETITION DUTY COMMUNITY SERVICE BEACH CLEANING COMMUNITY SERVICE Since 2019, 05th Kuching Rover Crew, committed to environmental care, engages in annual beach cleaning activities, often partnering with Kuching Beach Cleaners. Focused on tackling plastic pollution, we remove non-biodegradable litter like plastics, ghost nets, and tires from coastlines. HIANG TIANG SIANG TI TEMPLE ANNUAL PROCESSION COMMUNITY SERVICE 古晋市第五童军团 Over the years, the 05th Kuching Scouts have been enthusiastic volunteers in the Hiang Tiang Siang Ti Temple annual procession . Before the dissolution of the 05th Kuching Scout Band in 2019, the band showcased musical performances during the procession. Despite this change, the 05th Kuching Scouts have remained dedicated volunteers, actively involved in carrying procession items and ensuring a smooth and disruption-free flow along the procession route. Their ongoing participation underscores the Scouts' dedication to the meaningful traditions and responsibilities associated with this significant community event. The Car Wash Fundraising Event marked the first ever charity initiative by the 05th Kuching Rover Crew, generously sponsored by A&K Car Service Center. Spanning a weekend in April 2018, the event sought to accumulate funds for community services and establish a financial base for Rover activities throughout the year. Notably, some junior and senior Scout members enthusiastically volunteered their time, further emphasizing the collective dedication to both fundraising and community engagement.
