LIZZIE MARALI DIRECTOR OF SPECTRUM 2022: INFINITE With hearts full of pride, all 53 of us from the second batch of BA Design and Creative Industries (DCI) programme at UBD will be continuing Spectrum’s legacy by welcoming you to Spectrum 2022: INFINITE. Through this exhibition, we want everyone to be fully aware of their own potential – this includes their own creativity. I personally believe that all of us are creative in our own ways as we all have an imagination. Everyone has different levels of creativity, it depends on how often you choose to tap into it. Thus, the bottom line is that each of us has the power to invent ourselves; who we are; our own identity. It is healthy to express yourself – it is a form of Catharsis. It allows people to constantly be in touch with their inner self, and one way to do this is through art; it connects one’s sense of individuality through different forms, styles and concepts. These differences are where one could shine and tell their story, and most importantly; to be heard. With the term ‘INFINITE’, we aim to be as inclusive as possible by highlighting this never-ending diversity of talents, skills and identities. What we present to you is not just the creativity of our team of artists, but the combination of all the hard work, dedication, passion and commitment of the 2018 DCI cohort. It was not easy; we have spent almost a year jumping back and forth planning the exhibition to either be online or offline because of COVID-19. It got to a point we ended up planning two events due to how uncertain our situation was. It is truly a miracle that this exhibition is orchestrated physically in the end, but I wholeheartedly believe that we managed to make this event a reality because of everyone; I thank Dr. Rui Lopes and Sir Haji Osman for their guidance and advice while still trusting us to be independent enough to learn through the trial-and-errors of organising this exhibition. I thank our dear sponsors for being supporters of creativity and believing in us. And most importantly, to my lovely friends of Spectrum 2022: INFINITE, to all of the tears we shed, to all of the stomach-hurting-laughter we shared, to all of the lessons and fond memories we have made throughout – I hope you look back to this stage of your life and smile with pride; you have left a mark in the creative industry. Here is to us in celebrating differences and all of the diverse identities that decorate the infinite space of creative possibilities with a colourful explosion. Creative Resilience DR. RUI OLIVEIRA LOPES & HJ. OSMAN MOHAMMAD SPECTRUM EXHIBITION COORDINATORS Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Brunei Darussalam, we all have experienced challenging times, affecting our lives in all fronts. This has particularly impacted the lives of the student community who have been studying and working online over the past twelve months. The limitations inflicted by online learning present challenges to the typical apprenticeship environment, brainstorm discussions, and peer-learning that is normally abundant in creative studios. Social interaction is an important component of the creative process as it is through our social and human experience that we can develop ideas and seek for opportunities to bring a positive impact into our community. Then, the uncertainty of the future becomes even greater for students in their final stage of their studies, developing concerns about their professional careers. Once again, adverse conditions and various challenges have demonstrated to be jet fuel for creativity and resilience. The Spectrum 2022: INFINITE Design and Creative Industries Graduation Exhibition presents the final year projects completed by 53 DCI major students across a wide range of creative clusters, from digital arts and design, editorial design, product design, conceptual art installation, fashion and apparel design, film, animation and video production, fine arts, and concept interior and architectural design. The projects conceptualised and developed by the students are the result of their academic and creative endeavour throughout the four years of their studies in Universiti Brunei Darussalam, where students are exposed to a human-centred design and creative practice that it is built upon a deeper connection, empathy, and positive intentionality to resolve problems. The Design and Creative Industries bachelor’s degree is designed to enhance student’s creative skills, critical thinking, conceptual mindset, technological knowledge, managerial dexterity, and entrepreneurial attitude. It is our hope that a transdisciplinary approach towards an expanded perspective over the cultural and creative industries develops in our students the versatility, flexibility, and the emotional intelligence that the present global creative industries job market clearly demands. Although we are evolving into a world and a lifestyle that is increasingly shaped by digital technologies, artificial intelligence, and the visualisation of alternative realities, it is through our human conscious, our sense of awareness, our ethical standards, our positive intentionality, and resilience that we can build a better future. At last, we would like to congratulate all students who are presenting their projects to the public and UBD community and we hope that the Spectrum exhibitions will continue to open new opportunities for the cultural and creative industries in Brunei Darussalam. Organised by 53 DCI major students of various backgrounds, the second ‘Spectrum’ exhibition presents to them the opportunity to showcase their individual and collective skill sets gathered within their four years of learning experience in UBD. It serves as a means for them to express themselves through their chosen discipline of work, whether it is product development, creative entrepreneurship or academic research; all to increase the students’ employability and to widen their career opportunities after graduation. This exhibition is set to open its doors at the beginning of the second quarter of 2022. ‘Spectrum 2022: INFINITE’ represents going beyond the students’ limits to achieve their full creative potential. As previously introduced by our predecessor ‘Spectrum: Anew’ of the new wave of creativity and innovation, INFINITE wishes to explore and portray the unmeasurable creative potential. Through this exhibition, the students want to radiate the divine of self-actualisation to inspire and feel the sense of being unstoppable. Using the term ‘infinite’ signifies the togetherness of the students to represent an infinite skill set and infinite passion towards the Design and Creative Industry. Map THE CLUSTERS About

I have been in the photography and videography industries for five years. I started by accepting small commission works and events. Then expanded to accepting commercial projects, production and live feed broadcast; to handling the technical, practical business and management. Through these experiences, it has driven me to become a media entrepreneur. My aim is to reach out to the public and create awareness on freelance work in Brunei. Learning through one another from their thought process and techniques can boost the future potential of the industries. I believe in recognising and valuing hidden talents to bring opportunities to develop them into career paths. ARTIST PROFILE When the pandemic started in Brunei, it impacted the film industry causing cancellations to videography and photography productions. As a working freelancer with a passion to share knowledge, people often ask about my work process. This has driven me to develop the Kretif Kitani website so people can learn new skills and potentially realise alternative career paths with the freetime created by the outbreak. Through the website, it reveals insights to individuals on how freelancers operate - elevating and realising the value of the creative industry in Brunei while also opening the community to activities such as collaboration, job shadowing, focus groups in-person and virtually. My personal experience joining workshops, both local and overseas, influenced the way I operate a class as an online course. The courses are available in multiple languages to not just cater to the local population but those of different countries too. My subject’s nature involves ingenious perception and application of motion graphics. The concept of editing and designing the environment requires the understanding of emotions, relating to our real-life experience. This idea started from my interest in modding video games with the vast possibilities of improvement on the aspect of the game. The spark of curiosity about game mechanics brought me to game designing. Being a creative enthusiast, I dedicate my skills in game development as a means of entertainment using a variety of applications of visual arts and surrounding the nature of creative visual motion. ARTIST PROFILE The Little Voices in My Head is a video game in development that involves visual elements based on the survival horror genre. The availability of a non-playable character (NPC) as well as a playable character can provide interaction to a scene and develop a narrative from within. Visual interpretation is key to help the audience feel the sense of suspense, add meaning to a story and embed an understanding of the overall concept. Nevertheless, immersing the players in an adventure waiting to be explored. My idea of the game is to relate the self-conscious thoughts of our darkest grief, depression, and how we handle them. The essence of creation is based on engagement as well as a strong mentality, as you will always come across errors and complications, which can lead to depression and feeling down. That is to say, without struggles and dedication, one could not accomplish anything except by their own will. It took me approximately four years of self-teaching to become a threedimensional (3D) artist. Within that period of time, I found myself exploring different styles of work to portray unique fictional designs. I have done a variety of works with 3D modelling from scratch to produce environments, products and characters. The artworks that I have made can offer great value in promoting the community, especially in Brunei. In addition, I am continuously aiming to improve myself by learning and gaining new knowledge and skills in the field every day. With this, I hope to realise my dream to work for a creative firm as a 3D modeller. ARTIST PROFILE The Logic Cycle is a 3D art looping cycle video composed of different fantasythemed backgrounds that links with the character’s equally different design concept. In the video, the environment and character design changes in a continuous cycle to showcase the skills I have sharpened as a 3D modeller. The concept of this project was inspired by the ‘CG Challenge Alternate and Parallel Dimension’ video available on YouTube. This is especially new in Brunei which grants an opportunity for me to present my work to the creative community. A message that I have slipped into this video is my encouraging belief that creativity and talent is a medium of communication. By showcasing this project I hope to motivate the current and the upcoming generation of aspiring 3D artists to utilise their skills and continue to exhibit creative and innovative 3D artworks. 3D Artist IRFAN @myylo _pan I am a multimedia artist with four years experience as a portrait artist and a year experience as a three-dimensional (3D) artist. I strive to come up with interesting and unique visual illustrations that are aesthetically intriguing whether they are reconstructions of real life events or entirely fantastical environments. The visual imaginations I have are poured into a painting, or a digital 3D world, as I can easily modify the reality and properties of the subject without limitation. ARTIST PROFILE 19th Century Brunei is a creation out of my own curiosity towards the past Bruneian civilisation. So, I went through the records and analysed every local artefacts available from the said century to learn more about it and represent our historical culture with as much respect and accuracy as possible. I have decided to create this project into two separate pieces, a painting and a virtual environment video where each conveys a parallel message that is not necessarily needed to be perceived as a whole. However, the painting focuses more towards the aesthetic approach to recreation of Kampong Ayer in that era, whereas the video takes an immersive approach of the same venue. The goal with this project is to distribute this visual information to the public. So, I want to make it as interesting as possible. The painting has a photo-realism style as I consider it to be an art style that is appealing to the majority of the public, while virtual reality is a rather interesting and effective way to visually enlighten people. 3D Prop Artist NATHAN YAP @nyche _art I have been a huge advocate for transmedia storytelling particularly in video games, believing it to be a contemporary yet sustainable part of the creative industry. The culture of gaming is constantly evolving and has been a part of my life ever since I was introduced to it, becoming a subject for my creative visions ever since. With a knack for world-building, storytelling and character development; through the use of 3D software, I aspire to create entertaining, ideal but grounded worlds of my own vision. The pixar-esque aesthetic invites audiences from all ages to enjoy and uncover thought-provoking instances through the composition of 3D objects in a scene. ARTIST PROFILE Jalan Omnik is a 3D scene that is inspired by one of my favourite first person shooter games: ‘Overwatch.’ Like the game itself, the location of this 3D scene will take inspiration from a real life location while set in the distant future. This 3D scene acts as a form of storytelling through the minds of Bruneians during an AI uprising; with the use of several props and instances, I am hoping for players to be able to recognize familiar sights and understand certain situations that had occurred within the location. This map hopes to inspire philosophical conversations regarding humanity’s relationship to artificial intelligence, represent and showcase Southeast Asian culture and art through games, and stimulate innovative and critical thinking surrounding catastrophic events that could occur in the future. Art has been my passion since a younger age. My main artistic focus that I always look forward to is illustration. Before I ventured into the world of technology, I learned digital media through my previous institution to explore the world of creative industries. This is where I mastered the basic skills to operate creative suite programs and it further fostered my passion as a creative. I want people to develop an appreciation for graphic design and see the opportunity it can offer in Brunei when it is allowed to thrive within the nation. ARTIST PROFILE Through the Looking Glass is a series of three illustrations with a fantasy theme. It includes a variety of colours and tones, including a new style I have been adapting to due to the utilisation of digital tools. I usually produce artworks using traditional and conventional tools such as pen and paper so I consider this approach to using digital tools as a challenge and a stepping stone to further my learning process. This series is a way of expressing my emotions and as a means of conveying a message through the world of illustrations. I am portraying the three series of artworks to represent an artist faced with the challenges of their client’s demands and confronting their other related hardships. Simultaneously, with this series, I am promoting graphic design as more than just a hobby for it can help to communicate information to the viewers about a particular matter. I hope through the showcase of my series of artwork, people will be more aware of the importance of graphic designers and illustrators in Brunei Darussalam. I am a digital illustrator who has always been passionate about art from a young age. It has been a few years since my style transitioned from monochromatic hand-drawn art to vibrant and soft-coloured illustration art. This was due to my heavy inspiration towards the artists of Studio Ghibli which produced painterly background scenes in animated movies. Gradually, and undeniably, I developed an interest in digital illustration. The subject of my digital paintings are mostly based on nature but are not limited to landscapes. Viewers may therefore perceive my art as an act of mindfulness, experiencing an intuitive response of wabi-sabi. ARTIST PROFILE I believe that capturing beautiful sceneries whilst communing with nature in seclusion brings a marvellous perspective of life. Painting is what brings out my inner protagonist. Through my digital artwork, I decided to depict nature as an ideal setting for exercising mindfulness by following the fantastical and whimsical art style of Studio Ghibli that is full of vibrant colours. Serenity Garden attempts to achieve the state of being free from the neverending cycle of everyday life, simply by immersing yourself in the artwork in hopes that people would adapt to this habit of connecting with nature. The concept of wabi-sabi is embraced in the artwork as it is closely related to nature. It is a beauty that reminds us that everything is imperfect and incomplete which reflects the true nature of things as they are. Viewers are free to respond to the digital painting that illustrates a garden as a symbol of nature in their own way while picturing themselves in the painting. Graphic Designer SYAZA JUFFERY @Syazaphj As a graphic designer, my objective is to produce minimal designs that reflect the complex deep-rooted issues in today’s society. My creative approach includes a lot of visual research as I want my designs to be simple and lucid but abstract enough to express the emotional aspect. My aspiration is to raise thought-provoking questions and create designs that can be perceived in a number of ways rather than being confined to one narrative. I hope to create designs that spark conversations and urge individuals to become more self-aware of their own behaviour and thoughts. ARTIST PROFILE Break the Taboo is a creative project that focuses on sexual assault victims, in the narration of victim-blaming and shaming culture that dominates Brunei Darussalam. The issues I am portraying have always been prominent in today’s society but there is no safe space to talk about it because it is considered taboo. That is why it is more important to bring awareness to these issues because when shame is used as a weapon, it hurts and damages victims more. By raising awareness, it will foster conversations thus normalising discussions about the issues and this will encourage victims to find their own voice rather than silence them. I hope that from observing my work, the audience can understand better the importance of breaking the taboo and to always enable discussions about these issues. This project acts as a reminder that it is never the victims’ fault, that they are not alone and that their voices matter. 45 I have always been very passionate about creating, designing, and experimenting with colours. Therefore, colour plays an important role in my artwork as each colour represents a different meaning, regardless if it is done in a traditional or digital medium. My style is flexible as it can be quirky, colourful, minimal or modern. With the majority being visual learners, I aim to educate the youth through art. As I believe that art should be utilised more often in our daily lives, I aim to show how beneficial art can be to others. ARTIST PROFILE Brunei and its 7 Puaks is an illustrated book for children about Brunei’s traditions and tribes. It is made up of simple educational content with colourful illustrations in order to make learning fun for children. This idea was established upon my realisation that we have neglected our own culture in the present day. I began to see the beauty of Iban culture when I went to teach in Amo, Temburong. This experience has reminded me to consider and appreciate other local Bruneian customs which motivated me to teach younger generations about traditions through art. Accepting a diverse range of cultures is the message I hope to convey through this illustrated book. It will help people acknowledge the cultural diversity and develop a respect for how each person is unique. Not only that, there should be a deeper grasp of our own cultures as well as an establishment of a deeper connection to our ancestors. Without the traditions practised within each tribe, Brunei would not be how we know it today. So, let’s embrace our cultures as they are significant in shaping Brunei throughout history. We often hear the proverbial expression, “a picture is worth a thousand words,” and I simply cannot disagree with that point of view. However, what may be considered as a vivid memory to us might not be clearly evident to others. As a freelance artist, my work revolves around producing sentimental pieces of work through a series of photographs and videos. With this approach to my work, I aspire to produce media that are meaningful to everyone; media that are rich in context and story. ARTIST PROFILE In a cultural setting, music is perceived as an identity of a culture. However, modern songs are currently dominating the music industry, causing the characteristics of Bruneian traditional music to slowly disappear, especially amongst the youth. My work aims to express the essence of Bruneian traditional music, highlighting the manner of which cultural identity represents a country. Forgotten Gem: Traditional Music intends to showcase the beauty of Bruneian traditional music through the integration of Augmented Reality into an A4 sized photobook and various sets of 4R photos. Audiences will be able to learn more about cultural music and at the same time, enjoy the animated elements of the project such as the differences between Traditional Gulintangan Rhythm and Bruneian Folklore Music. Since a young age, half of my childhood was participating in art competitions. I realised that I have been exposed to the creative industry even without any basic knowledge of art. From colour pencils, oil pastels, watercolours to foam clay sculpture; my artwork embraces the exploration of colours, welcoming joy in producing art. ARTIST PROFILE The Unseen is a fictional graphic story book for everyone of all ages, especially for gamers! During quarantine, my life went through a significant change after I engaged myself with video games. This inspired me to produce the story of Krantina, who after being quarantined in her bedroom for weeks, decides to turn on her strange computer leading to the gaming world. Instead of controlling the character from the screen, Krantina is inside the video game adventuring the world where she meets new virtual friends, unexpected creatures, and even enemies. She has the freedom to choose her own decision regardless of the game rules, going through three different virtual worlds that she has to complete in order to escape the strange situation. As an illustrator, I create narrative artworks that have been inspired by the lives of everyday people – capturing raw expressions, emotions, and daily life experiences. The works that I produce incorporate both traditional and modern approaches. With an emphasis on experimentation, I am driven to create and explore various materials and techniques with the aim of responding to the themes of a project. ARTIST PROFILE I believe that stories have the ability to value the diversity and commonality of human experiences. As an artist, I want to immerse the audience in the settings of the subject and the emotion I portray in my works. Nameless is a concept art book containing sketches, concept art, illustrations, environmental designs as well as character models. The book intends to burrow the reader into its universe, introducing the characters and their stories. The title Nameless refers to the hidden individuals in society; it involves characters categorised in social invisibility. It is inspired by community projects where art is used to give purpose and social improvement towards the underprivileged to instil hope for their future. As the characters undergo hardships throughout their journey, many have found art as a form of comfort or brief escapism from the darkness that they are living through. Therefore, I intend on inviting readers into a world merged between fiction and reality to promote engagement, build connections, and share experiences. Ever since I was young, I have always been illustrating cartoons and was heavily inspired by old animated cartoon shows, comics, and video games that I spent my time watching as a child. Gradually, I grew better at drawing figures and just never stopped. It is also at this time that I became more passionate about writing and storytelling in general. Of course, among the many awesome ways to convey visual storytelling is to produce a comic book, and that is when my comic book journey began. ARTIST PROFILE My individual project involves the production of a single issue comic book called Happy Pill. This comic revolves around a character named Brian who is not happy with many aspects of his life. From a dead end job, to being divorced from a toxic marriage that he was in for 11 years. Now, in his mid40s, Brian is not in a good state emotionally, physically, and financially. When he was given the opportunity to try out an experimental drug that could temporarily give him a vivid fantasy of a happier and more fulfilling life, he just could not refuse. He needs it. But of course, a fantasy can only go so far. I was heavily inspired by Western comic book artists, both new and old. Before I started pursuing art academically, I have always been fond of art cinema. After several years studying as an IT student, I finally delve into the creative industry that I have always had passion in - filmmaking, where I can convey my vision and story. I desire to incorporate Bruneian identity in my short films, featuring unique local storylines to expose the hidden treasures in the country. My goal is to elevate the film industry in Brunei Darussalam to be on par with other ASEAN countries. ARTIST PROFILE Kaki Tiga is a screenplay of a mystery and horror film set in the olden days of Brunei Darussalam. It revolves around three kids who have broken a taboo in the village of Kampong Hilangan and they are set on the journey to solve the mystery of their home. The aim of this project is to highlight the significance of scriptwriting in the film industry especially in Brunei Darussalam. It also aims to highlight the culture and identity of the country itself by incorporating local stories and elements to the screenplay. As a scriptwriter, I engage with the audience by creating thought-provoking stories that allow multiple perspectives of narrative. In recent years, I have had the opportunity to explore more in the realm of both digital art and design, following the advancements of technology. This has allowed me to practise and create visually therapeutic graphics and illustrations that provide people with a sense of relief and serenity. Through the use of different colours, layouts, and shapes, I intend to create different types of visual content that attract audiences and convey messages with the intention to leave powerful impressions. ARTIST PROFILE Overcome is an interactive zine merged with a creative journal that deals with one’s social phobias, providing tips that help introduce various ways to cope with people’s anxieties and emotions alongside multiple self-help activities. At the same time, users will get to experience a sense of realism contrasted with escapism. Considering that my project tackles the issue of anxiety, users’ comfort is an important detail to attend to apart from the overall look of the zine. Hence, my main goal is for people to view it more as a helping hand rather than just a typical journal. I hope that after going through this zine, more would be encouraged to speak up about their daily struggles, considering the stigma in our society that revolves around mental health in general. This way, more conversations about the topic would occur and more people will be made aware and be more knowledgeable. As a challenge, I like to explore and use different mediums beyond illustration especially uncommon ones such as video games - while also looking into different themes and subject matter to further character development and growth. Through my work, I hope it can encourage creatives to experiment in a similar manner regardless of methods and pour their ideas without worry. ARTIST PROFILE This book aims to re-educate the said behaviours of discrimination and prejudice among everyone, which can be replaced with the act of kindness; no matter their race, skin colour, or even species. To add personal touches, this book also includes some flowers and their language, relevant to the main character! Antheia tells a story of growth and kindness. Humans and vampires coexist together where discrimination and prejudice left by their ancestors still left a mark to the point it worsens to an extent. Atiya is not a perfect human but she is willing to adapt due to her nature of moving from one environment to another. When she was tested with an unfortunate event, she can’t help but think about how she can continue her lifestyle. She managed to find what she can find ‘home,’ but she will be living with vampires. How will her life go onwards? Follow Atiya’s journey of her ‘temporary’ life living with vampires! Growing up as a creative who is full of curiosity, I always wanted to explore and experiment more on creative work when there’s an opportunity. I started my creative journey in photography and then shifted my interest to graphic design and illustration. As a graphic designer, I believe good graphic design acts as a great tool to attract the audience and is the right path to follow in communicating and conveying messages through a visual form. Therefore, I like how graphic design, illustration and photography can complement one another to visualise ideas and convert meanings which allows me to design something aesthetically pleasing. ARTIST PROFILE Bake Lines is an illustrated baking recipe book that aims to be intuitive and engages the average reader by using digital illustrations, graphics and photos. Bake Lines consists of various baking recipes from traditional bakes to artisan bakes where each recipe that is featured will have its own story to tell. The idea of producing this book came to me when I was doodling a digital piece of cake and suddenly having the thought of the possibility of sharing my recipes as well as my baking knowledge to everyone via illustration hence, the conception of Bake Lines. All recipes are fool-proof with my own adjustment and experimentation. Some of the recipes featured in this book are also the recipes that I used to teach for my baking classes during my Discovery Year (DY) back in 2021 at The Baker Way. There will be more than 20 recipes available in this book and illustrations used are for easy and better understanding as well as engage readers on the subject and art of baking. The first issue of Bake Lines will only be available in physical form. CREATIVE STATEMENT Graphic Designer NAZRI AWANG Bake Lines Illustrated Baking Recipe Book 9.8” x 6.9” 61PUBLICATION 60
I am an illustrator who is eager to dive into the publishing industry to lend her hands in design and illustration. I believe creating a compelling visual design on the cover down to the smallest factor like the typeface of the contents, plays a significant role to the reader’s experience than just the plot alone. Drawing things cute may be my superpower, but I am not afraid to experiment and play around with different mediums and styles if it means I can add my magic to a book for you(r inner child), your ‘baby fruits,’ and kids to enjoy. ARTIST PROFILE Between storytelling and illustration, the latter is a prowess I am more keen to demonstrate and contribute as I am passionate about children’s illustration. To allow myself to focus solely on the design of the book, I invited my collaboration partner, Cikgu H. to write I Am Saving Water - inspired by our experience with children, who far too often spend a long time in school’s restroom playing with water! This book is made with bright and playful illustrations that helps attract children’s attention to assist their parents, teachers, and carers as an educational tool. This way, parents can teach and improve their child’s toilet etiquette and hygiene, especially at school. Other than that, the book also helps the guardians teach their child the concept of saving water and how it helps the people around them. This way, it brings them one step closer to being one of the big kids! CREATIVE STATEMENT Illustrator NISA HASHIM @sainboard I Am Saving Water Educational Picture Book 8.5” x 8.5” 63PUBLICATION 62
As a digital artist, my work ranges from two-dimensional (2D) to threedimensional (3D) art. Ever since I could remember, looking at drawings and paintings really fostered my imagination, and I was always curious about how computer graphics were made in video games and films. Unlike many others, I was never traditionally trained in art, but I took great interest in creating them late on through the digital medium. Learning those artistic processes in recent years with current technology has become one of my favourite things to do creatively and now, it is great to have the opportunity to share my own work with others. ARTIST PROFILE Planet Campfire is a narrative artbook. It is set in an entirely fictional and dystopian world. It takes place in a regional landmass called The Bleep, which is divided into four states. The title ‘Planet Campfire’ is taken as a namesake from a dominating fast-food chain that exists within the fictional world itself. The franchising and corporate aspects of it serve as the main influences in telling and visualising the world. There will be narrative tropes of adventure, survival, industrial, socio political situations, technological escapism, nostalgia, and humour. This artbook is for everyone of all ages and it offers a balance for those who enjoy conceptual art and branching tales. Planet Campfire is inspired by popular works such as Disco Elysium, The Last of Us and Fallout. Lastly, this artbook is also my personal nod to the inspiring works of Simon Stålenhag and Jakub Różalski. Fulfilling this final year project is a great challenge and learning experience for myself, but ultimately, the goal of Planet Campfire is simply to present a new work of fiction that I hope others can enjoy. I have always been fascinated with how imaginative people can be when one verbally shares personal mystic experiences that cannot be explained with factual evidence. Some visual perceptions appear unidentifiable and unexplainable, seemingly defying the preconceptions of reality. As an illustrator with no natural affinity for clairvoyance, the abstract nature of ghost stories is a bonus for me. Through my devoted attachment to our most successful traditional tool, the pencil, it would be a waste for me to not visualise how they look. ARTIST PROFILE In Sekeliling-Mu, I have compiled 20 short stories that have been shared with me over the past few years from within my family. These stories feature various recollections of spiritual encounters including one that lingered behind my brother in his room as he recounted his tale and another that clung to my sister’s leg while she was asleep. As I picture these experiences in my head, I am sharing my own visual insights through my personal collection of charcoal drawings of these unseen creatures illustrated in the book. This project dawned on me after reading one of Roald Dahl’s series although my tales are considerably much shorter in comparison as to fit each story in only one page along with the respective illustrations provided. To believe or not to believe, that is for you to decide. Who knows? Perhaps some of the guys in the book will prove it to you one day. I am an illustrator interested in story-telling, character design, and entertainment. Creating works of illustration for entertainment is my everlasting passion that burns ever-so brightly. Highly inspired by anime and manga, I have a mixed pot of different styles from cute or cool looking characters, to silly or absurd illustrations - to which I give my best creativity. I believe in the fun and joy of creating and I want to show the world that having fun without meaning is okay! Because in life, you have to count every experience you had. Even if it is the smallest. ARTIST PROFILE 0ccult;Pretend is a manga that consists of a bunch of stuff I love; a cluster of my personal enjoyment, if you may. In this manga, you are introduced to a world where the supernatural are casually existing in the human world along with a hidden society where these supernatural beings live their lives, not much different from our current society. Follow Yume, the main character of the series as she discovers more of this society with an agency that handles supernatural disasters and crime. To tackle the supernatural, the fellow members of this Occult agency are equipped with abilities that will help combat against these situations. Yume has the ability to turn keychains into real-life weapons which I appropriately named ‘Pretend.’ There is more to this ability and more characters with interesting powers as well. However, this project is considered a pilot for the series and I can only hope for the audience to enjoy what I have created. When I was young, I tended to create imaginary scenes in my mind. Little did I know, I was already immersed in the creative world. As I grew older, I managed to learn and communicate more through design. Being a designer as well as an athlete, communication and determination are important core values for myself. Through design, I can relate with people by turning my imagination into reality. ARTIST PROFILE Champion of Brunei is a three-dimensional (3D) animation based on sports. As an athlete, I decided to dedicate this project to all athletes in Brunei Darussalam. Through the hard work and endurance that they have encountered, I express my gratitude through this project. My main inspiration was from the experience that I went through as an athlete as well as a student. Despite all the hard work and pressures that we have encountered, no matter what type of sports we do, sometimes we need the motivation to get us through. As mentioned by Arnold Palmer, “always make a total effort, even when the odds are against you.” Through this project, I hope to be able to motivate people to keep on improving their skills and keep on going. As athletes, we represent one country, and together, we improve and motivate each other. I am an animator who is fascinated by how animation can be used to create stories and convey emotions and ideas in a creative, easy-to-understand manner. Animation is simply more than a thrill of movement created by a sequence of pictures; it has also connected individuals all over the world in ways that writing and live action films have not always been able to. As animation is found in so many places, I believe that each animator has their own style unique to their experiences. With a deep admiration for animated films, I have developed a strong appreciation for the art form. Thus, motivates me to create my own based on real-life experiences. ARTIST PROFILE Remembrance is a two-dimensional (2D) animated short film about the first COVID-19 outbreak in Brunei Darussalam. The storyline is based on my recollection of real life experiences and events. It tells the story of Naima, whose life was turned upside down during the said pandemic. The short begins with how she was able to go about her everyday routines without restrictions; she could spend time with her families and friends, dine out and so on. The mandatory social isolation and quarantine order was abruptly issued as everyone is advised to stay at home to protect themselves from the virus. The sudden transition to the ‘new normal’ is followed by several struggles and unexpected challenges. By showcasing Remembrance, I hope to bring awareness of the different struggles people faced during this situation and that they are not alone in their struggles although each struggle is not the same. Hence, this creation of mine serves as a reminder that we are all in this together, and no one is safe until everyone is safe. As a creative enthusiast, I hold great interest and appreciation for the visual arts for as long as I can remember. I have a passion for creating artistic works especially digital designs, with the aim to entertain others. Motivated by artists around me, my goal is to reach a level where I can contribute my craft to the creative and entertainment industry. ARTIST PROFILE Naosu is a short animation portraying a young boy who faces a problem too heavy for him to bear. The story revolves around him and his single mother living in a forest far from civilisation. One day when the boy wanders out of his mother’s sight, an unfortunate event occurs as the mother pricks herself on a thorn and falls into an eternal slumber. This incident thus leaves the boy to search for a cure to heal his mother’s ailment. Inspired by Village of Shadow, Naosu utilises a dark lighting technique accompanied with a gloomy visual aesthetic. To gain self-satisfaction, I have set Naosu as a challenge for myself to turn imagination into reality. Considering that storytelling holds a special place in my heart, I have decided to choose animation as part of a showcasing skill that is valuable in the creative field. My fascination for adventuring, especially relating to nature and travelling, have always been present since childhood. So, I love travel videos as I find them beautiful, inspiring, and intriguing. These videos always put me in a good mood as they inspire me to capture intimate moments and personal experiences. After discovering my passion for filmmaking, my main goal as a creative is to produce sentimental films that will inspire and provoke the audience through the various stories and cinematography applied. ARTIST PROFILE Explore is a cinematic short film displaying the vision of Brunei Darussalam by presenting the life of its locals and the beauty of the nation. Whilst exploring the ideas and possibilities of how culture and religion interrelate in Brunei, its contents includes the exclusive arts, culture, tradition, and shows hidden wonders in the vast expanses of the rainforests. This film mainly utilises a phone camera, inspired by Benn TK’s series of video content and style. This non-collaborative project shares my goal of making an aesthetically compelling film with an inspiring narrative. The aim is to show everyone that it is possible to accomplish a cinematic short without a complete film crew and top-tier gear and equipment. The film also aims to have the effect of igniting the wanderlust inside all of us, encouraging us to start doing something out of our comfort zone. Being a self-taught visual artist, creating art has always been an important part of who I am. From illustrating to crafting and even writing, I would constantly want to try something new regardless of where I am in life simply because I enjoy the process. Recent interests of mine include animation and web programming. As a creative, the saying, “strive for progression and not perfection” is something I value because creativity is not meant to be flawless and faultless. Having problems merely means there is room to grow and from there, curated solutions can be developed. ARTIST PROFILE Being lost and uncertain of who you are meant to be is a common struggle humans often internally battle with. What is more, when you lose your precious spark in pursuing your dreams. We thought life would get better as we age; we would be freer than we were at 11; that we would be able to grasp the life we wish to live by at 18. However, life is a rollercoaster and it is not always going to be an uphill track. Warna is a monologue of a letter-to-self expressed in the form of an animation short. It tells the story of a young woman who is in limbo as she is driven into a corner by the stress of adulthood resulting in her feeling stagnant and lost as though without purpose. Having grown up with an appreciation of animation works with vivid storytelling, I aim to create this short in hopes that someone else might not feel as alone upon knowing someone out there feels exactly the way they do. Animation is my initiative in expanding my creative technique as a filmmaker; it has enabled me to express my creativity and convey messages or stories. I find it fascinating how every single frame plays a crucial part in the flow of the story and how the music and sound leads to a relevant emotion. As an introvert, I struggle in showing my interest and emotion freely; however, animation has helped me relay messages that I cannot deliver in-person. Therefore, this has motivated me to produce more creative animation that communicates impactful messages to the audience ARTIST PROFILE Choices utilises stop-motion animation to create and increase awareness to the public. This type of animation needs the animator to move the object and capture it repeatedly to bring a static object to life on screen, giving illustrated figures a playful impression of movement. Choices features a three-minute stop-motion animation film on a healthy eating campaign that aims to create awareness and address the audience regarding the importance of exercising sound judgement when minding their food intake. According to World Population Review 2019, Brunei Darussalam recorded the second-highest obesity chart in Southeast Asia and thus, dietary intake has become one of the nation’s health awareness initiatives. The main motive behind producing this film is to integrate my existing filmmaking skills and new traditional animation skills. With the opportunity to challenge myself in experimenting with a different style, I hope to encourage other creatives to explore all possible options to expand their interpersonal skills while contributing to the nation. I create art as a form of escapism, for it has always been my ‘safe space.’ Growing up with films, I am constantly moved by their meaningful messages and moral lessons - and surely enough they shape the person I am today. This ability to leave an impact on people through stories and art inspired me to take the concept of escapism to another level, and create safe spaces by utilising any immersive visual storytelling. So, hi! Call me Lizzie. I am a bit of everything – but I am mainly an escapist artist who wants to give comfort to others through art. ARTIST PROFILE Our only limit is our own imagination. We all have a ‘safe space’ within ourselves – our minds. It is where all of our unfiltered thoughts and imagination reside. However, it is easy to forget that when we are distracted by the hustle and bustle of life. Being an escapist artist, I aim to remind others of this ‘safe space’ through any form of artistic expression, as long as others are able to relate to my artworks and inspire them to create their own safe space to escape to. I do not necessarily create only for aesthetic purposes, but more for catharsis; a prompt to disconnect from reality and to check in with your inner self; a reminder of your roots and the moral values that shaped who you are as a person. Illustration and animation are my comfort zones. Deep-Rooted is my first solo animation project – it started out as a random illustration of a tired guy with a cheeky kid, then they somehow came to life and focused mainly on self-reflection, mental growth and saving your ‘inner child.’ CREATIVE STATEMENT Visual Artist, Illustrator & Animator LIZZIE MARALI @coziefuurin Deep-Rooted Drama/Fantasy, 2D Animation 00:03:00 MEDIA PRODUCTION 84 85
With a passion for the art of music production and sound design, my work is centred around the conceptualisation of soundscapes. Thus, breathing life into musical pieces and audio-visual media. I aim to bring the listeners into a narrative journey through a mixture of different types of music, brought forth by the drive to encourage variation, experimentation and preservation of culture and traditions. With a focus on both contemporary and traditional music, I strive to challenge the boundaries of tradition, all the while transcending the borders and providing a new outlook into the music we hear today. ARTIST PROFILE The Varunai Saga is a historical-fantasy mini music project that revolves around the retelling of bits and pieces of Brunei’s historical events and folktales. This project will bring listeners into the sounds of the past, spanning different periods of time in Brunei with subtle hints to modern music and culture. Inspired by science fantasy and historical fiction media such as films and video game music, this work is realised through the use of a wide array of musical instruments - both traditional and modern - with suitable music theory accompanying the musical pieces. These elements work in tandem to evoke multiple different emotions for each piece while being tightly knit by a cohesive narrative structure. This work is an effort to preserve the use of traditional instruments of Brunei as well as showcasing their potential in different scenarios, including newer modern musical compositions and instruments. As a firm believer of eco-friendly design, I developed a close kinship with the natural world and found myself significantly driven by the concept of ‘sustainability.’ That kinship shaped me into an innovative designer where I integrated the beauty of sustainable living and functionality together. Thus, this became the basis for my designs. Gradually, I began exploring the realm of creativity and started experimenting with graphic design. I see this as an opportunity to use my knowledge and skills to raise awareness on sustainability in design and I hope that my designs serve as a portal for transformation for my audience. ARTIST PROFILE I believe designers bear a huge responsibility towards humanity and nature because design can either positively change or negatively affect the world. Especially in today’s fast-growing society, I find it necessary for myself to find time each day to exist in an environment of order and unification. I try to explore different elements of designing to bring a sense of energy, harmony and balance for myself and my surroundings. Kollekt is deeply rooted in my exploration of the relationship between sustainability and functionality because I believe it can give life to nature yet remain practical for humanity. I integrate technology, human needs, and aesthetics to produce furniture that is meaningful and beneficial for everyone and their surroundings. Thus, as environmentally conscious as I am, I made sure Kollekt is innovative and eco-friendly, especially towards the design, the process, and the materials I use. I am a designer and a creative entrepreneur who seeks for unique ideas that benefit the community whether in the form of art, product, or any other creative medias. Similar to other professions in their respective industries, creatives contribute their skills, creativity and imagination to help the community thrive. Through my work and artistic endeavours, I seek to inspire and foster understanding, happiness, and creativity. ARTIST PROFILE For the audience to grasp and understand the foundations of marriage in Islam, I have designed a marketing collateral called Kawin; a board game that teaches individuals about the Islamic fundamentals of marriage. Despite the fact that this topic is rather simple, many individuals regard it as unimportant. As a result, most Bruneians remain unaware of the subject until they are obliged to learn about it. Why not study it while you are still single and ready to mingle? As the Malay proverb says, “sediakan payung sebelum hujan,” or “prepare early before the storm.” I hope that through playing this game, people would acknowledge and embrace the beauty of marriage in Islam as most would only recognise it through our local wedding culture. I am a product designer that aims to create innovative ideas that could bring benefits to the world. I developed my skills through trial and error, and wish to inspire people around the globe with my aesthetic approach. From my standpoint, all creatures are equal, and that each life matters. I wish to understand more about animals and make good use of my design skills to help them adapt and survive as the world’s industrial development progresses. It is my hope to be able to share my view with others, together with a new innovative invention. ARTIST PROFILE I have created a brand and solution for the community to join hands in creating better living conditions for both pets and stray animals. Strays are on the rise and there are various reasons for that, such as the lack of shelters, awareness, and a low number of adoptions. Despite the fact that different organisations have been established to solve these issues, the environment at the moment is still unsafe for them. Therefore, Hucreature provides an alternative way and tries to explore different types of shelters that can be used either inside or outside the house. One of the objectives is to encourage pet owners as well as the public with the same interest to work collaboratively; allowing them to adopt more strays without having too much burden. I am a product designer who is always enthusiastic about creating products that are simple yet useful for others. I aim to highlight the beauty of the product by adding in my authentic designs. The designs that I mostly express in my works are floral or any creative patterns that naturally flow into my mind in general. I consider myself an intuitive designer as I tend to utilise any floral ornamentations and designs that naturally flow into mind. ARTIST PROFILE Since my teenage years, I have always been driven by curiosity. I am fascinated by the exploration of the mind; how things are structured and how it takes form. This inspires me to create my project, Bag Adventure. My work is unique because everything is handmade, from the bags to the initials, and even the embroidery design. “Less is more” is the main concept of my work as I feel that minimal design is more sustainable. Hence, my project explores the relationship between minimalism and durability while utilising different ranges of media, categorised by specific themes and messages. During research and production, I continuously find new areas of interests leading to new ideas. I like to create my work freely without limitations as it allows flexibility in my artwork.
