INFINITE Spectrum 2022

Design & Creative Industries Graduation Exhibition for 2022

I started out as a self-taught artist and solely focused on traditional art forms such as printmaking, sculpture, and painting throughout the years. I found comfort in the art form from the structure that it gave and the strength that it had to prevail through the times of modern types of art methods. My work is all about the experience and the impact it will have on the audience. I am constantly thinking of ways to include my audience in my artwork. My artwork ultimately requires the attention of the viewer, as I do not want them to just see but experience it as well. ARTIST PROFILE We grow obsessed over how to have the most successful life and then we get damaged, which puts a pause on our journey and we find it difficult to take the next steps in our life. My work is simply put, a space where you can have compassion for yourself. Trigger Warning, designated for the audience to let go of repressed, hidden, and dark feelings that hinder personal growth. The installation includes a sculpture that portrays the oppressed and the oppressor, and it contains items and messages that represent trauma. This artwork that I am creating is aimed to be interactive for both the audience and myself, where we can place representations of trauma in the form of items or messages into the space as a symbolisation of speaking out against our trauma and finally taking the next steps in our lives. As a multimedia designer, I aim to discover the nuances surrounding the idea of perfection within the creative process by seeking open communication with the natural environment. By pursuing the arts, I started an endless journey of rediscovering my cultural identity. Despite the similar cultures shared in the Malay world, the differences ultimately come down to the adat (customs) the people practise. These distinctions are thus the deciding factors in shaping one’s cultural identity and is therefore, the very core of my creative perspective. ARTIST PROFILE Levitation is a work that embraces both traditional and modern elements. It looks into the concept of being a human being in today’s society; maintaining an identity while living in the so-called ‘technological world.’ Technology exploration is an approach that I find very interesting, leading to infinite possibilities, to which I added the concept of rediscovering an identity through material culture under the influence of Melayu Islam Beraja. Presenting a monolith - a mysterious being that appears in the origin and beginning of time; which envisions the future that embraces tradition through technology. Surrounded by the nature representing the discovery of its identity which soon could fade by the influence of globalisation and time as it shows a vision of an improved life in Kampong Ayer through its new architecture, site and heritage. Whether maintaining or contesting; evolving is essential. CREATIVE STATEMENT Multimedia Designer HAFIZ HANIF @fsh _yidira _b n Levitation Mixed Media Installation 8 x 12 x 8 ft INSTALLATION 102 103

Seeing the fun through curious eyes has led me to grow into a multidisciplinary artist. I believe in the power of visual communication, which is why I tend to not limit myself to creative freedom. I love making creations that capture imperfection and organic essence, whether in traditional or digital form. Being progressive and experimental in different fields has allowed me to develop as an artist. My vision is to produce works of imagination to maintain and keep creating ideas that inspire and bring joy to others through thoughtful and playful design. ARTIST PROFILE Step into the world of Handmade with Love and you will find yourself surrounded by your ordinary everyday objects - only except they are all handmade, with love. In today’s ever-changing times, we live in a society of mass consumption in almost every aspect of our lives. But how much do you notice the items we consume relate to the fundamentals of art? Handmade with Love is an installation that communicates design in its raw form, represented as ornaments and decoration. It is about the process and the hidden labour involved in creating and how visual art influences our surroundings. More than that, the installation celebrates the creative freedom of individuality, exhibiting the rising DIY movement and the Maker Culture - that there is an artist in every single one of us. The installation captures this concept by assembling varying art pieces in one space, to welcome exciting visual exploration for all. As a graphic designer, I am compelled by its potential to captivate audiences. I aspire to produce designs that are purposeful and convey messages embedded with values and morals that are pivotal in making a positive impact. I am driven by my resolve to instil these principles in individuals for the betterment of themselves and society through my designs. Practice, progression, and persistence are core values in my artworks. While aesthetics is also an important aspect to me, I yearn to create designs that are not merely visually appealing but also to create ones that carry profound meaning and significance towards the audience. ARTIST PROFILE The Latinverse Series is a collection of streetwear apparel that emphasises Latin verses and its philosophy through graphic designs. The aim of the project is to invoke interest in the Latin language as they encompass philosophical ideas and messages that are beneficial for one’s betterment of self. The verses are complemented with their English translation and visual elements to further enhance the philosophical message they conveyed. It is intended for these designs to be comprehensible to not just other artists and graphic designers but as well as the general audience. In addition, the focus on the forgotten language is to communicate the verbal incomprehension that individuals often experience. Latin verses arguably possess the ability to universally translate intricate thoughts or emotions due the complexity of the language itself. As a result, it is a quintessential language of oratory that positively affects the way individuals express themselves with more sincerity and confidence due to their philosophical meanings. As a multidisciplinary designer, I often engage in multiple domains in the wide spectrum of design in my creative journey. With my new found enthusiasm for marketing, I had been observing the diverse impacts of creativity and design on commerce and have been fascinated by it since. I would consistently probe the relationship of product and brand design developments as well as effective marketing to seek the opportunity to fuse my design skill sets with digital commerce. ARTIST PROFILE N’chanting is a brand of modern contemporary batik merchandise that is birthed from my personal desires to exhibit the wide spectrum of art and design that a designer-artist can explore in the process of creating and developing a brand; and to progressively nurture the brand through effective marketing strategies and development. Intended as a long-term project, N’chanting is a product of the relationship between my knack for design and my enthusiasm for marketing - to demonstrate my passion for both, without discounting their aspects for one another. Growing up in a family of gifted individuals has helped me build my aspirations to believe there is a need for renovation in the creative industries. This is especially so within the fashion sector. Throughout the journey and finding inspirations from many local and international fashion designers, I strive to become an advocate for sustainable and slow fashion. I also hope to make a better difference for the country by creating my own resources and sustaining as much as possible. ARTIST PROFILE All of my existing works are the result of my ever-changing evolution of creative thinking as I consistently implement various themes and ideas as a way to work with different mediums, patterns, and materials each time. My current work is my first clothing project, I, which consists of two sets of attires inspired by two different visuals, honouring two sides of my family’s culture, Filipino and Bruneian. I also wish to make an emphasis on the production process of this clothing line as they represent the learning experiences I have gone through from cultural to design differences between two cultures. Aside from that, this project also centralises around the idea of sustainable fashion as the current issue of unethical and unsustainable practices still exists globally to this day. As important as it is, many companies and individuals have taken steps to make a change for the better of the world which inspires me to take that step together with them. To contribute, I created these lines from plant fibres and upcycled discarded fabrics. CREATIVE STATEMENT Fashion Designer Q SUHAIMI @thc17thlcttcr I Clothing Line FASHION & TEXTILES 112 113

Noticing that there is a common style amongst contemporary wedding gowns, I pondered the notion of changing their styles and designs without losing its cultural meaning. This thought encouraged me to explore bridal fashion, as I enjoy experimenting different approaches in creating new fashion with a variety of patterns and materials. ARTIST PROFILE I believe that everyone has their ideal wedding to look dazzling on their solemnisation day. My current project focuses on contemporary fashion but also acts as a preservation of community traditions by incorporating ‘kain tenunan’ or traditional woven textiles, and traditional patterns into modern wedding dresses. In Bruneian culture, wedding dresses with such patterns symbolises one’s status, ethnicity, religion, and identity. Thus, it motivates me to explore bridal fashion with a vision to include the influences that have shaped our cultural heritage into a western wedding dress. This wedding dress is known as Anggun because of its graceful and stylish appearance, inspired by the popularity of contemporary styles. It is an alternative for people who prefer to opt for a modern-looking yet traditional gown that preserves the culture of the bride. I hope to promote and ensure the long-term sustainability of culture by doing this project. As culture is both an enabler and a driver of sustainable development’s economy, social, and environmental components. In addition, this project also helps in promoting and preserving Brunei’s cultural heritage. CREATIVE STATEMENT Bridal Designer SYAKIRAH MATUSSIN Anggun Wedding Dress FASHION & TEXTILES 114 115

I am a self-taught visual artist that has been drawing since a young age where my preference for black and white prints has become apparent. With my limited knowledge and experience in my formative years, interning at the creative agency has drastically improved my work. During my internship, I gained the motivation to explore the endless boundaries and opportunities that the creative industry can provide to elevate my personal growth, both as an individual and a visual artist to continuously contribute back to the sector in any way possible. ARTIST PROFILE The main concept behind Hall of Memories is to turn memories and moments of other individuals into visual art. I wanted to present others with the chance to turn what could potentially be impossible and make it possible - which is the ability to transform the intangible into the tangible. As a visual artist, this art medium allows me to share a keyholes’ view to an impactful moment in someone’s life as to show the audience a visual representation of their stories. As my personal art style leans towards black and white posters, I went forward with pursuing this creative project in hopes of accurately depicting memories and moments that are frozen in time through visual arts. As an abstract allusive artist, my major focal point is on fine art paintings. The style that I am fond of is more inclined towards subtle light-tones with applied arts technique frequently used in pattern making. Through my personal edge, my intention is to convey my instinctive experiences toward having some sense of completion and contentment. The unique perspective that I enjoy delivering to each painting alters and amplifies an appreciable message, as well as developing a visionary experience. Currently, I seek to expand my pattern design to a broader scope such as production, textile and even home decorations. ARTIST PROFILE Kembang Kiapu is a series of paintings designed to intensify aquatic plants; Pistia. The notable piece that can be seen highlights ‘Kiambang,’ a type of aquatic plants that are unequivocally discovered in Brunei Darussalam. The word ‘Kembang Kiapu’ derives from the Malay words which means blooming. These artworks aim to further express the country’s origin in an imaginative expressionism that aggrandise identifiable subject matter. The idea of the contemporary paintings is decisively influenced by Indigenous Aboriginal Australian Art that depicts principally on patterns, emphasising on numerous dots, shapes and lines that use vibrantly bold colours. To achieve the tranquillity and momentum of my paintings, I have connected vivid and pastel hues with applied technique by using acrylic. Five years of doing landscape photography has significantly changed my view and perspective towards my surroundings and the outside world. Personally, landscape photography is all about the journey of experiencing new and unfamiliar environments, a process of visualisation and the progress of achieving a desired shot to be documented. My goal for the future is to achieve my desired quality of work, enough to be recognised by the public so they can appreciate the aesthetic and message within my work. ARTIST PROFILE Remnant is my personal photography showcase project about the leftovers and ‘scars’ of nature due to climate change. The lifeless remains of our trees, nothing but the dried branch that is still standing strong. A scar that leaves a reminder that the damage has already been done. Ever since the first wave of COVID-19 came to Brunei, I personally feel that everyone has been fixated on this virus due to its dangerous nature and a big threat to our humanity. This resulted in the neglect of climate change as the other contemporary threat that is occurring globally. The aim of this showcase is to bring up the awareness of climate change through photography as an important medium of visual communication. It is also to avoid people from straying away from the fact that even if climate change is thought to be a ‘minor’ threat, it will eventually affect both the environment and society as a whole. The world of art and design has never been a stranger to me ever since I was a toddler; I had further grown into a multidisciplinary artist-designer with skills of sorts such as textiles design and fine arts. Recently, I have been indulging myself in the fields of digital arts and graphic design, though I seek to amalgamate traditional art into my digital works. My core value in designing is to never cease its playful aspect while still able to create outcomes that effectively communicate with the audience. ARTIST PROFILE Social media has allowed the privilege of freedom of speech in today’s societies. However, this also led to the cacophonous nature of social media. This created the continuous cycle of ‘what-if’s’ through my mind and therefore, an inspiration to my work. Dystopia Through the Screen feature pieces that touch on issues I constantly found myself scrolling through. This includes the many stories of Sexual Harassment, Discrimination and matters involving Fake News and Cancel Culture. The surrealistic themes are an attempt in expressing the chaotic perceptions I had towards the society behind social media. To complement my artworks, I had translated ideas and my artistic creation into designed merchandise as my works illustrate such contemporary issues. Through this project, I hope to create awareness to the public of the attitudes that society may need to reflect on. I always think that humans are unpredictable. Therefore, I have always been interested to know more about the human mind and behaviour to better understand why humans are behaving the way they are now. I want to understand the people around me while also learning to understand myself along the way. Therefore, my work is a reflection and expression of my thoughts on the global pandemic that is happening around the world. ARTIST PROFILE The pandemic has changed the perception and mentality of certain people. Stay at Home, Be Safe focuses on the mentality of the frontliners which is also a message that we have heard ever since the incident occurred, or in Malay translation; “teranah di rumah.” I have combined several conceptual and symbolic elements to express my work such as incorporating memorial lanterns being released into the sky to remember the deceased. The lanterns continually rising towards the sky represent the increasing cases of COVID-19 worldwide. This work is a reminder to the public that they should stay at home and to be safe. There are 19 lanterns which represent the year when COVID-19 first started in Wuhan, China. This artwork shows that even the strongest person has limits to what he can handle. With the continuously rising number of cases, we see a man on the verge of giving up. And as the woman needs reassurance to survive this pandemic, even the frontliners are helpless to provide one. Stay at Home, Be Safe shows that the frontliners cannot be responsible for everyone’s safety; a prompt for everyone to take care of themselves by staying at home. I enjoy exploring new things and challenging myself. As a creative individual who began as a fashion designer and later shifted my interest to visual arts, I intend to further enhance my ability in different fields. I have always wanted to create a unique yet simple artwork that is filled with messages. I am currently focusing on sculpting with the aim to visualise and express my emotions through my modelled works. The practice of shaping figures has inspired me to develop the idea for my current project. As an advocate for mental health, I choose to utilise the fine arts as a way to reflect the issue in a positive light and raise awareness to the public. ARTIST PROFILE The Head is a bust sculpture that portrays an individual with a neutral yet calm expression. The seemingly indifferent expression represents one’s outward portrayal and the ability to mask their emotions in a public sphere. This concealing of emotions may unwittingly set the person in a particular mindset where they bury their emotions at their own expense as to seem amiable to others. A lightbulb, sprouting out of the top of its head, denotes a person’s state of acceptance and openness about their own struggles. The lightbulb can light up but it can also burn out, showcasing the hesitance to acknowledge the need for assistance. When the bulb is lit, the person is indicated to be in a reflective state where they finally come to a self-realisation of their frame of mind. Through my artwork, I intend to encourage a conversation amongst the audience as to search for methods to reach a state of tranquillity where one can finally focus on solving their intrapersonal issues as opposed to dwelling on them. CREATIVE STATEMENT Illustrator RASHIDAH BM The Head Bust Sculpture 10” x 4” x 24” FINE ARTS 128 129

The main theme in my works explore the creation of visual interests in representing the significance of introspection and topics that are closely related to it. The creative subject of my works tends to be experimentative, mainly focusing on the use of textile art. Through each art piece, my hope is to create pieces that are able to evoke a sense of realignment, resonance and emphasis on the priority behind each person’s state of mind. ARTIST PROFILE My project explores the metaphorical use of the term Metamorphosis through a personal basis of our psychological growth. The aim of this project is to explore the interpretation behind psychological metamorphosis through the five stages of grief. Commonly, the process of grieving is known to be highly personal and is applicable to any form of unfortunate personal loss; be it a loss of freedom, sense of self, or a loved one. This individualistic experience should never be rushed or undergo a linear formula as this process is a personable journey to the individual going through this timeline in their life. Thus, through the visualisation of Metamorphosis, the project is presented as a series of embroidery works, each step representing the journey of an individual’s psychological development to acceptance. Throughout each carefully threaded texture is representative of the emotional suffering and effort one goes through when enveloped beneath each growing feeling. This piece is worked on fragile, translucent fabric with strong, contrasting elements of colour and patterns to clearly showcase the vulnerability and sentiment of each emotion. My appreciation for the process of creating has been prevalent since early childhood. However, my discovery surrounding the beauty of infrastructure is relatively recent. Throughout my growth as an architect and interior designer, the main source of inspiration is largely attributed to the surrounding natural environment. These direct interactions with nature have simultaneously helped me resonate with my senses as well as my emotions. Combined with this newfound love for nature, I aim to create architectural works where the infrastructure could interact harmoniously with the natural world and provide a calming atmosphere. ARTIST PROFILE In this modern era, progress is often deemed essential such that numerous individuals have struggled to catch up with their peers. This led to many having reported that they experience burnout amidst their difficulties. Through a miniature architectural diorama, Shivelight aims to convey nature’s healing abilities as well as to remind others to be mindful of the environmental impacts when it comes to building infrastructure. Shivelight will thus show the harmonious blending of nature with infrastructure which will then create a peaceful urban housing environment where individuals can relax and slow down. This installation intends to encourage realisation in individuals on how essential it is to surround oneself with nature and experience a sense of serenity and tranquillity that comes along with it. By taking the time to explore and observe the growth of plants in biophilic architecture, individuals can discern how life keeps persevering regardless of circumstances and thus, inspires one’s hope and optimism to keep moving forward. The idea of interior and exterior design has always been fascinating. The passion I have for crafting, sketching and venturing to new things while growing up has deepened my interest, which helped me in experimenting with the different styles of methods and tools that enhance my skills as a designer. In addition, my relationship with nature as a plant parent adds to my interest in styling and landscaping. Hence, while venturing into interior design, creating and finding the concept to create a functional and suitable ambience for a certain space is what I believe in and have tried to implement into my design. ARTIST PROFILE When finding inspiration for a layout and planning a design for a space, I have always noticed the designs I appreciate are simpler and minimalist depending on the subject matter. Incorporating designs that are timeless and minimalist into space is difficult to achieve in a society that changes preferences based on trends and multiple views of styles. Hence, understanding the functionality and the conceptual meaning of the designs help innovate and shows the importance of it when designing. Project Café is an interior design concept that is based on the idea of having a healthy safe space that is functional as well as creating a sense of mood within the space. As the idea is to create a sense of zen occupying the environment that compliments the ideal concept, I believe incorporating nature allows both spaces of indoor and outdoor to coexist and enhance the overall experience in an orderly manner. Therefore, with my Project Café, I aim to produce a space that is comforting for everyone to relax while being productive. As someone who has a photography and videography background, I have always had a vision in my head on what a good composition is. As time passed, I began to develop new skills and decided to pursue a career as an interior designer. With the expertise that I have, I am confident to use this as an opportunity to apply my knowledge as well as my skills to my client’s work. This is to produce and turn the clients’ imagination into reality, providing them a pleasant home that they desire. ARTIST PROFILE After years of working in the production industry, I have become a perfectionist which I considered as a great trait when it comes to interior design. As the growth of three-dimensional (3D) rendering has increased in demand especially for virtual modelling and architectural design, thus, Golden Mekar Enterprise was founded. Golden Mekar Enterprise is a company where we provide a platform for customers to visualise their ideas into reality and give them the accessibility to evaluate their ideas, experiment with materials, conduct research and situate their creations in the actual environment before it is being manufactured. A Better Home is the first project of Golden Mekar Enterprise where I dedicate my best to provide the assistance that the clients require in order for them to have a pleasant home, as well as giving them a glance on how the company works and how it is different compared to others. I have dabbled in a variety of sectors in the creative industries; from being a graphic designer to becoming an interior designer. I believe that being an interior designer has helped me become a solution to people’s problems. It often feels rewarding when it comes to helping people build their dream home and achieving their vision. With that, my goal for the future is to capture the public’s heart and be able to professionally collaborate with others. I hope to take the opportunity to help people in achieving their dreams. ARTIST PROFILE After changing my main field to interior designing, I realised that it takes a critical view when designing various projects. With the rise in demand - particularly for virtual modelling and architectural design - it was expected that companies provide favourable possibilities for market development. Thus, Golden Mekar Enterprise was established to provide services for customers to design their homes by giving them the opportunity to assess, conduct research and experiment their ideas through visualisation in highquality 3D rendering. As a result, we are able to help the client in both achieving their dream home as well as assisting the client in saving a significant amount of money. A Better Home is the first project for our company, where we provide our future client an overview of how the firm operates and give them the opportunity to view our project in a different way. I am an interior designer who believes in the statement “form follows function.” To me, it is important to distinguish between what matters in design and how to make the significance of every project become visually striking. My work mainly consists of projects that incorporate minimalism, functionality and visual gratification. I incorporate only the necessities one would expect from an interior space. A part of my work involves utilisation of minute details which bring together the entire design. With this in mind my works always begin with the following statements in mind, “form and function works in unity.” ARTIST PROFILE My project revolves around the popularised concept of modern design. In theory, modern design is characterised by a monochromatic colour palette, clean lines, minimalism, natural materials and natural light. Modern Living Design is a personal project of mine that attempts to follow the principles of what classifies as modern design in an interior space. In this project, I utilised a monochromatic colour palette consisting of mainly greys with a brown hue which gives the space a natural feel to help emphasise the details that have been placed within the project. To me, spaces should not be cluttered in such a way that makes it unappealing to the eyes. Hence why I have taken a minimalistic approach to designing my project. Following my design philosophy, I aim to ensure form follows function. In my design, I went for an open concept that connects the living space with the kitchen and dining area to give a natural flow for someone to live in. With all of this in mind, Modern Living Design aims to show how we as humans never realised exactly how much we enjoyed the finer things in life. I like stories. I incorporate them in everything I do, including my current interior design project. Despite that, I have always struggled speaking my mind, so I would find ways to convey my stories in a non-verbal manner. A lot of my early works started out as written text that could accurately reflect my thoughts, though I have always yearned to represent more than just my own echo to others. A tangible article that people could touch and feel, and give them their own penny of their thoughts for a brief moment. ARTIST PROFILE I decided to explore outside of my comfort zone, from having my head in the books, out into a fabricated sense of reality that I could build. Mundane objects as they come, have their own story. One’s belongings cannot lie about their person, though that would require people to investigate for themselves. For my project, Bathing in the Feels, I chose a bathroom setting, especially featuring a bathtub because to people like me, it serves as the one place of comfort where nobody should ever dare intrude upon. I wanted to showcase the ideas I had harboured for almost a year now, the way colours can have an impact without coming off as too dull. To me, it also represents my thinking box; a place of solace, and a place of reflection. My inspiration came from an indie video game dubbed ‘No Longer Home,’ which explored the story of its makers in a point-and-click aesthetic.
