Our Chief Guest
EAST BRUNSWICK TOWNSHIP’S MAYOR BRAD J.COHEN
Mayor Brad Cohen was elected to the office in November 2016. The
Mayor began his public career in 2010 when he was elected to the
East Brunswick Board of Education. Working with a dedicated group
of Board members, he helped navigate the schools through difficult
economic times in the wake of the Recession and the draconian cuts in
State Aid. He was named Board President in 2014 and helped select
the new Superintendent of Schools. Balancing fiscal responsibilities
with massive needs in information technology, strategic planning, and
infrastructure, the future Mayor chose to use his skills to improve the
quality of life for all the resident of East Brunswick.
The campaign of 2016 focused on property taxes, the abandoned
Route 18 commercial corridor, and quality of life issues here in the
township. Within a few months, the Mayor has recruited a
professional team with the goal of addressing each of these needs. To
date, he has spearheaded the “Shop East Brunswick” program which
allows residents to obtain property tax credits for shopping in small
stores in town. This has been followed by the "Estate Card" which
also allows residents another option for property tax relief. There has
been significant progress in defining areas in need of redevelopment
on Route 18, and there are active talks regarding developing and
implementing a “transit center” approach to the corridor.
The Mayor is a 25 year resident of East Brunswick and is a practicing
gynecologist with an office in neighboring Old Bridge Township. He
lives with his wife, Penny-herself a Dermatologist in Somerset. He has
two children, Rachel and Daniel who are both graduates of the East
Brunswick Public School System (2006 and 2008).
As a graduate of Muhlenberg College, Allentown, Pa, UMDNJ (now
Rutgers) New Jersey Medical School and Rutgers Business School, the
Mayor holds an MD and MBA degree. The Mayor is an active
member of Congregation Bnai Tikvah, North Brunswick and East
Brunswick Jewish Center here in East Brunswick.
“I am thrilled to represent such a large, diverse, talented, and tolerant
community. We have such an exciting opportunity to write our future and I
want every resident to have been part of that success story.”
The mayor can be reached via Email at
[email protected].

GOOD SERVICE AWARD
VIBHA
Vibha is humbled and gratified to accept the 2017 Good Service Award from the Indian Cultural Society of
East Brunswick. We look forward to strengthening our partnership with ICS and enhance our community
efforts in collaboration with ICS to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children in need.
Since our inception in 1991, Vibha has raised $15 million and supported more than 250 projects in India and
10 projects in the US. As a result, Vibha has been able to reach out to and provide opportunities for over
300,000 children in need. Currently, Vibha supports 30 projects in India and 7 projects in the US. We
continue to be a 100% volunteer driven organization and take pride in sharing that 89.2% of your donations
go towards programs for child development.
We call ourselves a social venture catalyst supporting social entrepreneurs in India that believe in building
scalable and replicable projects to bring about societal change. We don't believe in building a parallel system.
We believe in improving systems like the Government schools in India. We started with Sikshana about 10
years ago funding a motivational program in 70 schools in Karnataka. In February, 2017 Vibha in partnership
with Sikshana signed a 50/50 partnership of Rs. 4 crore (1500 schools - 1,16,000 children) with Government
of Karnataka. On September 13, 2017 MOU was expanded to the full state of Karnataka – 48,000 schools
reaching 2 million children!
We have another model whereby we are providing education to children of construction workers. We support
3 projects - Door step school, Apna skool and SAATH, whereby builder provides a small place that can be
considered as a class room and Vibha provides teachers and all the requisites required for the children to
study, while their parents work on the construction site. Our longer-term goal is to mainstream these children
to government schools. We have gone one step further now and the builders contribute anywhere from 30 to
50 percent for the project besides providing the classroom space.
Vibha has several chapters in US and Vibha NY/NJ is one of the Top 3, which organizes flagship events like
Vibha 5k Walk/Run and Vibha Vibe gala. We also have an energetic youth chapter that not only leads the
Walk/Run event, but also organizes other community events. We are proud to be a participant with the
President’s Volunteer service award that encourages youth to give back to society.

A NOTE FROM THE TRUSTEES
December 10, 2017
Greetings from the ICS Trustees!
It gives us much pleasure to see ICS mark another successful year. Each year,
a batch of rookies and veterans come aboard the executive committee, add their
unique touches, and leave ICS even stronger than before. This year is no exception.
Led by Ashish Verma and a band of enthusiastic committee members, ICS has
flourished. It has further fine-tuned programs and activities for the membership, and
its community theatre experiment has taken our performers from the stages of
suburban New Jersey to the much-sought halls of New York City. Kudos to the
creativity, drive, and persistence of all involved in catering to our diverse needs,
being adventurous with new ventures, enduring growing pains, and finding ways to
stay balanced. The pages of this brochure richly capture the 2017 experiences. From
our perspective, what is markedly important is that we try to learn from our trials
and let our joint experiences shape the future of ICS.
At our very core, we remain committed to a mission that first brought us
together. For a little bit of history, especially for the new ones in our midst, ICS was
founded to provide families of Indian origin a venue to congregate and celebrate our
common roots – not just our particular provincial origins, but something more
unifying and central that bind us to together (and we’re
quite unique in that regard). Officially created in 1999, but with much deeper roots
in the community, the founders of ICS envisioned a meaningful “place” for an
association like ours: one that would be driven by its mission, belong to the
community, and would stand the test of time. It is totally gratifying to see we’ve had
such a rich journey. We definitely owe much of this to those who founded the
organization, and their vision and foresight, but equally to all who have come after
and have shaped ICS to be what it continues to be.
In a couple years, we’ll be celebrating two decades of ICS. For a voluntary
organization, that’s a phenomenal milestone. As we look ahead to that moment, it
will be great to also look back and to see what an exceptional ride it has been for all
the families that have been part of the ICS journey.
Tonight, with all its perfectly curated performances, will surely mark a place in that
commemoration. With that, welcome to the ICS way, enjoy this beautiful annual
tradition, and join in to spread the spirit.
Happy holidays!
Jaya Bhambhwani, Narendra Kishnani, and Nandita Verma
