GETTING OFF
THE BEATEN TRACK
It’s so reassuring to hear that customers are more determined than ever to still go on holiday, despite the cost of living crisis.
And it’s more great news that consumers are looking for ‘bucket list’ destinations and ‘extraordinary’ experiences.
So why not suggest a trip to Africa and a safari? This month’s issue showcases the wilderness and sheer beauty of Africa - ideal for clients looking for the experience of a lifetime.
There is also a vast range of expedition cruises, cultural gems and new destinations highlighted in our Small Ship & River Cruises feature - perfect for adventures.
Hopefully lots of ideas to get you and your customers inspired.

Hello and welcome everyone to my latest update on our SPAA.
Well, to paraphrase our national bard Robert Burns, it certainly seems
that “The best laid schemes o’ mice an’ SPAA council / Gang aft a-gley.” Which is how I feel with regards to our ongoing interactions with Holyrood.
We recently sent a further communi- cation to Business and Trade Minister Ivan McKee outlining the imbalance of the rates charges for businesses here in Scotland that receive no assistance but in England and Wales there are 50% reduction in business rates for the 2022 – 2023 tax year and 75% for the 2023 to 2024 tax year, which of course, we believe should be remedied immediately.
However, with the leadership change within his party and subsequent withdrawal by Mr McKee from this post, only underlines our continued frustration at highlighting the immediate and serious concerns of
the Scottish business community are thwarted again by lack of continuity.
I also read that political commentator Lesley Riddoch remarked to the BBC: “When he left he said he felt frustrated already, that he was hearing lots
of complaints from business and
was feeling unable to do very much about them. Stripping everybody of
a business outlook and experience - because he has worked in business out of the cabinet - would look like a bad direction to be going in.”
This is certainly a very valid point and we can only hope that the replacement hits the ground running on all the major issues we have highlighted to date.
Don’t forget - our first Network
Lunch & STAR exhibition - is on Wednesday 19th April, at its new venue in Edinburgh at Murrayfield Stadium. If you haven’t already been in touch, please email Janice Hogarth at [email protected] for more information and places!
These events are always well attended and a great opportunity to catch direct the latest news from suppliers and share a glass or two of wine with friends in the industry.
We also have our very popular Quiz on 18th May at a new venue, Sloan’s in Glasgow. We hope that you will get your thinking caps on for this romp around the world in conjunction with our sponsors offering some great prizes, so start getting your teams of three together now.
CAA Consultation on ATOL Reform 2023, the SPAA’s comprehensive
THE VOICE OF TRAVEL IN SCOTLAND
response - our formal Submission - is complete and ready to submit by the (extended) 31st March deadline.
In it, we have offered our ideas and insights in detail, along with a number of questions. We will now await further announcements from the CAA, whose stated intention, having run the Consultation, is to target the beginning of implementation of final changes for April 2024. This timeline is unrealistic and the segregation of monies must be a flexible approach as it is most definitely not a one size fits all situation.
There is still no mention of the long awaited (and currently paused) Insolvency Bill to cover airline failures and there is no consideration given by the CAA consultation in the contents of this consultation to the joined up thinking with things such as potential changes to the Package Travel regulations.
There will be some interesting times ahead if some of the decisions made by the CAA prove to be “too much, too soon” or if there will be a realistic approach - time will tell.
A few busy months ahead for me from a travel perspective, as I’m heading off to various locations around the world and ending up with a management meeting in Doha at the end of May.
But fear not, as I shall have my laptop with me and continue to update you all on the latest SPAA developments.
Take care and stay safe,
Mike Tibbert SPAA President

PLAYA HOTELS & RESORTS
UPGRADES AGENT REWARDS
PROGRAMME
Playa Hotels & Resorts has launched a revised agent rewards incentive programme.
Playa Rewards now enables agents to earn either reward points or cash for every booking made across the Playa Hotels & Resorts’ all-inclusive Caribbean collection.
Rewards are available on a per room, per night basis with
no room night cap. Cash can be collected and credited to an agents’ personal account whilst points can be collected and converted into free night stays at select properties. The higher the room category booked, the greater the rewards.
Point redemption can be exchanged for a free night stay with a minimum 700 points needed for a stay at select Wyndham, Seadust and Jewel properties across the Caribbean. At the higher end of the scale, 1400 points can be used to secure a one night stay at Jewel Grand.
Comments Jade Calver, Business Development Manager, Playa Hotels & Resorts: “We are excited to bring this level of earning flexibility to agents. Allowing them to choose their rewards based on their needs will revolutionise Playa Rewards, supporting agents on an individual basis.
“Cash rewards allow agents to continue to build credit that supplements their income whilst the option to convert points into free night stays provides an opportunity to experience Playa’s unique product offering first-hand, supporting agent learning and product knowledge.”
Agents can register for Playa Rewards and find out more, at www.playarewards.com.

Where’s William?
This month, Scenic launched a new campaign: Stories for Life. We believe that great stories are born of unforgettable moments and with Scenic, you’ll find it’s more than a river cruise, it’s creating hand-picked, thoughtful and personalised experiences designed to connect your customers with fascinating destinations in truly all-inclusive ultra-luxury, inspired by decades of expertise.
Stories for Life got me thinking about my own stories and the incredible moments I have experienced while working at Scenic and I wanted to share one of them with you.
The Danube is one of the most famous rivers we cruise on and has many highlights, including an exclusive Scenic Enrich event at Palais Liechtenstein, one of the grandest venues
in Vienna. Just a short drive from our Scenic Space-Ship,
we arrive at the palace and are welcomed with a glass of
fine Austrian Sekt, then shown to the grand room where our private concert takes place - it really immerses you in the culture of Vienna and the area’s famous composers.
I have been lucky enough to visit Vienna a few times for this Scenic Enrich event and experience the enchanting classical evening concert featuring the timeless music of Strauss and Mozart. A real highlight and a moment I’ll never forget, was when the orchestra wrote a unique score of music for Scenic, which we were presented with on the evening. This is a true reflection of our relationship with these exclusive venues and a testament to Scenic’s ability to offer something different, which can make an incredible Story for Life.

The airline will also operate services to Edinburgh, London Stansted, Manchester, East Midlands and Cardiff. These destinations will be some of the first to benefit from the UK Domestic Air Passenger Duty (APD) cut of 50% applying from 1st April 2023.

DARREN PHILLIPS...
VIEW FROM THE NORTH EAST
Hi guys, hope we are well and all recovered from another fantastic Geordie Bash?
Thanks for all your lovely messages and comments, especially the ones saying you thought it was the best one yet! Those comments make the stress from organising it all worthwhile!
The Geordie Jingle Ball is booked for Tuesday 5th December - again at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Newcastle - so get that date in your diary. Next year’s GB, with it being a Leap Year, falls on the same date as this year - 9th March 2024 - so another date for your diary.
I’ve just had a great week down in Gran Canaria. I usually go at this time every year because the weather is lovely, but this year was particularly hot, around 30c - not that I am complaining!
I stayed at the Vital Suites Hotel in Playa del Ingles and I have to say, it’s one of the best hotels I’ve stayed in Gran Canaria, along with the Baobab and Lopesan Costa Meloneras.
My room was a Golf Garden View in the Vital Suites and I would definitely recommend it. You have your own garden with sun loungers and the most amazing view over Maspalomas golf course, the dunes and sea. The rooms are not overlooked either so you have total privacy. The hotel has a fantastic spa too and you get one free entry per stay. It has a large free form pool with 6 different areas within it with bubble loungers, a jacuzzi, bubble jet seats, a full body massager tub, waterfall massager and a foot and leg massager.
I went on Saturday afternoon to give the pool a try and as my locker key didn’t have a wrist band, I just put it in my shorts pocket. After being “pummelled” by the full body massager,
I went for my key and couldn’t find it - it was in the pool somewhere! I told reception and the guy said no problem, he would have to switch all the jets off, get everyone out of the pool and retrieve my key. I didn’t think I would be too popular with the other guests in the spa so I hid in the steam room until I heard the jets go back on in the pool then casually came out as if I knew nothing about what had just gone on!
Playa del Ingles has not changed in the 25 years I have been visiting and the Yumbo Centre is still stuck in the 1960’s - same décor and same bars - but always a good night to be had. Even though most hotels were full, it always amazes me how quiet the resort is during the day. It’s lovely to walk around without any hustle and bustle, so all in all it was a great week.
It’s now back to reality and start planning my next trip. I fancy a Norwegian cruise, so any recommendations will be greatly received. Thanks for reading and will chat to you next month!
Cheers
Darren

INTRODUCING
AFRICA & SAFARIS
RWANDA - THE LAND OF A THOUSAND HILLS
Rwanda lies just south of the Equator, in the heart of Africa. Known as the land of a thousand hills, Rwanda’s stunning scenery and warm, friendly people offer unique experiences in one of the most remarkable countries in the world.
In the space of a week to ten days, it’s possible to experience an extraordinary range of wildlife and landscapes thanks to the country’s relatively
small size and rich biodiversity.
VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK
Situated in the northwest of Rwanda
is Volcanoes National Park. Volcanoes is named after the chain of dormant volcanoes making up the Virunga Massif. The park is home of the endangered mountain gorilla and has a rich mosaic of montane ecosystems which embrace evergreen and bamboo forest, open grassland, swamp
and heath.
Tracking gorillas through the rainforest surrounded by beautiful wildlife is a unique experience and is rewarded with a full hour in close proximity to a family of majestic mountain gorillas, from the playful babies to the
giant silverbacks.
AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK
Akagera National Park is in the north-eastern region of Rwanda and is home to lions, leopards, hyenas, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, elephants, rhinoceros and more. Embark on a day or night safari to spot the Big Five across the savannah, or enjoy
a boat safari on the forest fringed lakes which are teeming with wildlife. Guests can also go behind the scenes and meet park rangers and discover how Akagera’s wildlife has been rehabilitated and protected.
NYUNGWE NATIONAL PARK
Located in the south-west of Rwanda is the stunning Nyungwe National Park. The park is home to over 1,000 plant species, habituated chimpanzees and other primates including the Black
and White Colobus monkey, as well
as another 75 different species of mammals. Explore the beautiful trails that lead to secluded waterfalls, track the chimpanzees, bike, bird watch, learn about tea plantations and local communities. No visit is complete without summiting the canopy walk- way that gives a birds eye view of this stunning rainforest.
LAKE KIVU
One of Africa’s Great Lakes, Lake Kivu is dotted with islands and inlets along its shoreline, with charming beach
resorts, spectacular vistas and plenty of opportunities for hiking, cycling and kayaking. Rubavu is a large town on the northern edge of Lake Kivu, an hour’s drive from Volcanoes National Park
and the perfect place to relax after gorilla tracking. Rubavu’s waterfront
is lined with old mansions, hotels and trendy bars on the lakeshore, ideal for sundowner cocktails.
KIGALI
Ideally positioned in the centre of Rwanda lies the capital city, Kigali. Immerse yourself in the local art, fashion and culture scene during your stay. Sip amazing Rwandan coffee
and taste the excellent local cuisine
at a rooftop restaurant with breath- taking views of the city. Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, which, through education and peacebuilding, honours the memory of those who were brutally killed in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The three permanent exhibitions and burial gardens form part of a meaningful tribute to those who perished and provide a powerful educational tool for visitors.

AFRICA & SAFARIS
DISCOVER
As a luxury, trade-only tour operator, we are excited to announce the launch of our brand-new specialist website, Africa by Lusso.
The site supports the work being done by our Africa team, led by Senior Product Manager, Zoe Carroll. Zoe has over three decades’ experience in the industry, including time spent working at bush camps in Zambia’s South Luangwa Valley and years running
her own representation company specialising in southern Africa.
As one agent put it: “Zoe’s knowledge and passion for Africa is second to none. She has so much first-hand experience of so many places in Africa and is incredibly well connected. I go to her with my ideas and she never fails to make my client itineraries that little bit better. She is a delight to work with and always ensures that every little detail is thought through.”
But it’s not just Zoe. Most of the
team have over 25 years’ experience working in the luxury travel sector. They specialise in creating tailor-made safaris and bespoke luxury holidays
to sub-Saharan Africa and have an in-depth knowledge of the areas we offer, built up over years of travelling, working and living in the destinations.
Unlike other Africa specialists, we work exclusively with travel agents and never take direct bookings from clients. Our knowledge and experience are purely for your benefit, so you can send your clients on an African adventure of a lifetime.
We launched Africa by Lusso with four of our top-selling African destinations: Botswana, Kenya, South Africa
and Zimbabwe. You’ll find useful information on top sights and attractions - from iconic safari hotspots like Kenya’s Masai Mara to under- the-radar gems like Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe – plus a wide range of luxury accommodation options, as well as practical information like the best time to visit and how best to reach places.
Of course, luxury means different things to different people. Especially in Africa. For some, it means marble bathrooms, thick fluffy towels and elaborate tasting menus. For others, luxury is measured in experiences:
a night in the desert beneath a storyboard of stars, a helicopter flight over thundering Victoria Falls, watching wildlife at a waterhole mere metres from your lodge.
Which is why we’ve included sample itineraries for each country featured. Far more than your average package, these tailor-made trips have been curated by our experts and include hand-picked suggestions for things to see and do on each leg of the journey, from booking a professional wildlife photographer to accompany
you on safari in the Okavango Delta, to tracking endangered black rhino on foot in Zimbabwe’s Matusadona National Park – a spine-tingling experience that will stay with
you forever.
The itineraries, of course, are merely examples of what we’re able to arrange. Our experts will work with
you to adjust any element to suit your client’s needs. We’re also adding more countries to the website all the time, so if you don’t see what you’re looking for straight away, don’t worry. Chances are one of our team will have been there.
For expert help with your next Africa enquiry, visit africa.lussotravel.com or give our friendly team a call on 01625 591 112.

NEWS
TEESSIDE AIRPORT SCRAPS LIQUID SECURITY LIMIT
Teesside Airport has become one of the UK’s first airports to remove the 100ml limit on liquids when passing through airport security.
The previous 100ml threshold on liquid containers has been upped to 2 litres for hand luggage, thanks to two C3 scanners fully operational in security. These high-tech scanners also remove the requirement for lotions to be placed in separate bags, or for laptops and other electronic items to also be taken out ahead of scanning.
Government previously set a June 2024 deadline for airports to install new security technology to be able to handle the new rules when they come into force.
With both airport security lanes running 100% on the new scanners, Teesside has cut the limit as part of a pilot scheme. This move has reduced queues and the detailed 3D scans of baggage will also improve
passenger safety.
Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “Once again Teesside is at the forefront of developments in the aviation
industry, with our C3 scanners in place and already being used in the roll-out of the new rules, coming into force elsewhere next year.
“Passenger safety and experience
is front-and-centre of all we do at Teesside Airport, and these scanners play a massive part in both.
“We’re getting lots of positive feedback from our passengers right now and
as our slate of summer holiday flights ramps up, these scanners will be invaluable to quickly process the hundreds of thousands of people we’re set to welcome through our doors.”

Hi there Peeps!
Was lucky enough to take a bite out of the Big Apple this month. Flew in style with United Airlines in their Economy Plus cabin. Crew couldn’t wait to welcome me on board and I even
got to meet the Captain on the flight deck. Brad (Mr Virgin Hotels) heard I was going, so arranged a champagne reception for me at their newly opened fabulous NY hotel in the heart of the city - Wowzer! Check it out for your clients, if only for the outdoor terraces and magnificent views of the Empire State Building.
From the Caribbean to Scotland’s national drink (no, not Irn Bru!), Loganair invited me to a tasty whisky themed soiree at Clydeside Distillery. As you would expect from Loganair, there was a charitable element to the evening and funds were raised for Children’s Hospices across Scotland (CHAS). Loganair is Britain’s largest regional airline and goes from strength to strength. They greatly value the support of their travel trade partners and used this evening as a thank you.

SMALL SHIP & RIVER CRUISES
AMAWATERWAYS ANNOUNCES TWO NEW SHIPS FOR COLOMBIA RIVER CRUISES
AmaWaterways, the first major river cruise line
to explore the Magdalena River in Colombia, has announced details of two newly designed ships debuting in 2024 - the custom-built AmaMagdalena and AmaMelodia.
AmaMagdalena will launch 30th March, 2024 and AmaMelodia will begin sailing 19th June, 2024.
Specially designed to maximise the views along the Magdalena River, AmaMagdalena will carry 60 guests while AmaMelodia will welcome 64 guests. Both newly designed ships offer staterooms between 237 and 516 sq. ft and all feature AmaWaterways signature twin balcony design, with both a French balcony and an outside balcony, as well as a sun deck pool and fitness room.
Starting in Spring 2024, guests will have the choice between two seven-night itineraries, Magic of Colombia and Wonders of Colombia. Sailing between Cartagena and Barranquilla, both itineraries provide curated experiences and excursions, including a special Carnaval celebration
in Barranquilla featuring live performances reserved exclusively for AmaWaterways guests; birdwatching tours; riding an authentic paola through the town of Calamar and visiting the Magdalena basin to discover species of flora and fauna not found anywhere else in the world.
AmaWaterways also offers guests optional pre-cruise land packages in Medellín and Cartagena and a post-cruise land package in Panama City, Panama.
CELESTYAL HOLIDAYS
LAUNCHES TO THE TRADE
Celestyal has announced the launch of Celestyal Holidays, a dedicated trade packaging solution in partnership with Aviate, offering flight-inclusive holidays and commissionable rates.
Exclusively for the UK trade, Celestyal Holidays will offer agents the option to create tailor-made packages with regional flights, pre- and post-cruise stays and any Celestyal itinerary they choose, all in one booking which is fully protected by Aviate’s ATOL license.
Lee Haslett, Celestyal’s Chief Commercial Officer, comments: “Travel agents love our product but they want the ability to book Celestyal packages complete with flights and pre- and post-hotel stays.
“The launch of Celestyal Holidays not only demonstrates our commitment to the UK market, but offers our agent partners exactly what they have been asking for - tailor- made packages that are simple to book, are great value for money, pay competitive commission and are fully protected. I’m confident that our investment in Celestyal Holidays
will prove successful in helping us achieve our growth objectives in the UK while continuing to support our loyal trade partners.”
To celebrate the launch, agents will earn a £20 The Real Greek restaurant voucher for every Celestyal Holidays package booked before the end of April 2023. In addition, every booking made before the end of April 2023 will be entered into a draw to win two tickets to Mamma Mia! The Party at the O2 with an overnight hotel stay in London or a fam trip place on Celestyal Journey, Celestyal’s newest ship which debuts in September 2023.
Following a €20 million (approximately £17.6 million) refurbishment, Celestyal’s newest ship will set sail on 2nd September 2023, taking over the Celestyal Crystal’s programme, initially on its seven-night “Idyllic Aegean” itinerary.
