Hello and welcome everyone to my latest update on our SPAA.
Our Sparkle Awards recently held in Glasgow was undoubtedly a great success going on the feedback received on the day and after the event, with many stating how nice it was to see those so deserving receive their awards.
I’m certain that this event after its second year will now go from strength to strength and we can embrace the opportunity to reward and celebrate our very hard working frontline customer facing colleagues.
It was so great to see the increase in the number of nominations this year and I know the panel had their work cut out with the judging.
More details are highlighted on the opposite page and I would again like to extend congratulations to all the winners on behalf of myself and all the Council Members.
It was also great to catch up with everyone at the Glasgow STAR event but regretfully as I was travelling abroad, I missed the Aberdeen STAR this year but our Vice President Jac Dobson was there to meet everyone and hand out the prizes at the end of the evening and confirmed as I found out in Glasgow, that both were very well attended and appreciated by both members and associates alike.
Our lobbying of both Westminster
and Holyrood governments continues and we have been canvassing our members recently for feedback and comments on punctuality of flights between Scotland and London which we shall report back to the Scottish Affairs Committee who are currently looking closely at this issue. Clearly good connectivity and punctuality
is critical for the Scottish business community and can impact greatly on time sensitive appointments.
THE VOICE OF TRAVEL IN SCOTLAND
In addition we are engaging with the Scottish Tourism Alliance, Chambers of Commerce and our interactions with the Cross Party Aviation Group all continue at a pace. Aligned with our ongoing recent discussions with CLIA, CAA and IATA, we are constantly pushing the issues of our members, associates and the Scottish
travelling public.
May I also take this opportunity too, that by the time this goes to print, the voting for our main awards ceremony in November will have closed. I know you will all be eagerly awaiting the results and many of you will be looking forward to one of our premier events which is always a highlight and a
great night out with all our industry colleagues and an opportunity to show our appreciation for all our associates and key suppliers.
I look forward to seeing many of you there.
Take care and stay safe

BALKAN HOLIDAYS ADD MALTA AND NORTHERN CYPRUS
Balkan Holidays have expanded their product offering by adding the islands of Malta and Northern Cyprus to the summer 2024 main edition, which is now available. This is in addition to Bulgaria, Croatia, Slovenia and Montenegro.
A selection of resorts are featured in Malta, including Valletta, St Julians, Mellieha, Bugibba, Sliema and Gozo. In Northern Cyprus, the operator has added the resorts of Famagusta and Kyrenia.
Lynsey Jones, National Sales Manager, comments: ‘Northern Cyprus is a wonderful holiday destination which is not offered by many tour operators making it a major plus for us and our travel agent partners.
“For Malta we are offering great value for money holidays and a variety of resorts and hotels that make us a genuinely viable option for agents when they are selling holidays to this very popular holiday destination. We
feel these two new destinations align very well with our current offerings and will prove to be a very successful addition to our portfolio of products.”
Bookings can be made now with a £125pp deposit with nothing else to pay until the balance is due.

Hello everyone,
Are you all enjoying kicking up the crispy leaves of autumn and sipping on your pumpkin-spiced lattes? And doesn’t it make you start thinking of Christmas?
If, like me, you love a spot of festive shopping, we have some superb deals for your customers looking to sail from Liverpool this Winter, allowing them to take in the magic and sparkle of winter abroad.

And for those of your customers desperate for some winter sun, there is also a fabulous cruise on board Borealis to celebrate Christmas in the Canaries. Imagine it... a laid-back Christmas at sea arriving in sunny climes to see one of the world’s greatest New Year’s fireworks displays in Funchal.

The best option for your customers in the North will be The Azores with the Fleet in Funchal sailing on Borealis from Liverpool on 1st November for 14 nights.

- THE OFFICIAL SPONSOR OF THE UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
In 2022 Turkish Airlines became the first airline to sponsor the UEFA Champions League, with the 2023 final having been held in Istanbul.
The 2023/24 season will be the second year of Champions League sponsorship by Turkish Airlines, which flies to
more countries and international destinations than any other airline with a fleet of 429 passenger and cargo aircraft combined.
Bringing people from 129 countries of the world together on the skies, Turkish Airlines now participates in this elite sports event as the official sponsor of the UEFA Champions League reaching 678 million viewers in 200 countries through over 70 broadcasters. Fans also participate in the Champions League excitement on social media with 28 million engagements. As part of the deal, Türkiye’s national flag carrier will also partner with the UEFA Super Cup, the UEFA Futsal Champions League finals and the UEFA Youth League finals as the official sponsor.
On the sponsorship, Turkish Airlines Chairman of the Board and the Executive Committee Prof. Dr. Ahmet Bolat has stated: “As the Flag Carrier Airline of our country, we are excited for our sponsorship of the UEFA Champions League, one of the biggest sports competitions in the world. We believe in the unifying power of sports that brings different cultures together and we aim to continue participating in the world’s leading tournaments.”
UEFA Marketing Director Guy-Laurent Epstein said: “The UEFA Champions League is the world’s greatest club competition and we are delighted to have Turkish Airlines on board as a partner. We both share a global reach, connecting fans across continents.”
Turkish Airlines was the first airline in the world to partner with UEFA as its
official airline sponsor for the UEFA EURO 2016. The flag carrier airline also realised sponsorships with prominent teams such as FC Barcelona, Manchester United FC, Borussia Dortmund, Olympique de Marseille and River Plate. Turkish Airlines’ “The Selfie Shootout” commercial featuring Kobe Bryant and Lionel Messi is among the most watched commercials of all time.
Since the start of the sponsorship Turkish Airlines has united three football legends, Ronaldinho, Steven Gerrard and Cafu, in an exclusive UEFA Champions League film “Chase the Ball” featuring Brazilian freestyler Adonias Fonseca’s adventures.
The airline also designed one of its Airbus A330’s as a UEFA Champions League themed aircraft. Additionally, passengers visiting the Turkish Airlines Lounge Business at Istanbul Airport
were treated to an exclusive UEFA Champions League Finals exhibit prior to the 2023 finals with memorabilia related to the subject matter ranging from 18 finales since 2005 to personal items from significant players such as Messi, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and
many more.
As the only airline among the UEFA Champions League sponsors in history, the partnership continues in its second season with the renewed anticipation of world-class football excitement.

AIR CANADA TO ACQUIRE 18 BOEING 787-10 DREAMLINER AIRCRAFT
Air Canada has confirmed an order with The Boeing Company for 18 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner aircraft.
Deliveries of the new aircraft are scheduled to begin in Q4 2025 with the last aircraft scheduled for delivery in Q1 2027. These will replace older, less efficient wide- body aircraft currently in the Air Canada fleet and the agreement also includes options for another 12 Boeing 787-10 aircraft.
Air Canada currently operates 30 787-9 and eight 787-8 versions of the Dreamliner, with two more 787-9 aircraft scheduled for delivery from a previous order. The 787-10 is the largest model of the Dreamliner family and can carry more than 330 customers depending on the
seat configuration.
The aircraft provides enhanced cabin pressurization and humidity controls and the largest dimmable windows of any commercial aircraft. According to Boeing, the 787- 10 has up to 25 per cent lower fuel emissions per seat than the aircraft it replaces.
Where’s William?
This month’s column is one I have been looking forward to writing. The journey I have been waiting for so long -
Scenic Eclipse II came to Scotland and it really was a dream come true to see her so close to home. As I arrived at Leith,
I could see her sleek lines from a distance. Scenic Eclipse II draws attention and many passers-by were stopping to take photos of the world’s first discovery yacht.
Scenic Eclipse II’s smaller size gives her the unique ability to sail into ports other larger cruise lines cannot. This was immediately noticeable when we departed Leith through the very narrow channel, which Captain Erwan expertly navigated with ease. You may recognise our captain from Maritime Masters: Expedition Antarctica on Discovery+ earlier this year, a TV series which brought to life the whole experience of cruising with Scenic.
Then, we were on our way to experience the beautiful Scottish coastline with our fellow passengers from all corners of the world. On board, there are up to 10 different dining options and so I was spoilt for choice, from local Scottish dining to Italian or Asian. Everyone I spoke to raved about the food on board and I could see why. Every suite on board Scenic Eclipse II has a balcony with Scenic’s infamous drop-down window. The suites are incredible for a ship this size and brought comfort to a whole new dimension with a pillow menu, Scenic Slumber Bed, Egyptian cotton sheets and ESPA products.
We passed by and docked at many iconic locations, such as Aberdeen, the Orkney Islands and Oban. Each day we hosted several travel agents on ship tours, with a presentation and welcome reception – they especially loved to see the on- board helicopters and our unique open bridge policy.
We departed in Dublin and I was very sad to leave.
Scenic Eclipse II was then to make her way over to Lisbon, then onto Central and South America culminating in Scenic Eclipse I & II meeting in Antarctica towards the end of this year. Please do get in touch with me for training and support in selling Scenic ultra-luxury ocean voyages.

NEWS
EASYJET HOLIDAYS TREATED AGENTS TO THE BIG ORANGE PARTY EVENT
VIEW
FROM THE NORTH EAST
Hi guys, I can’t believe how
fast this summer has gone.
Seems two minutes ago you
were all in the thick of the summer buzz of bookings and enquiries. Now it’s time to catch up on all those jobs you have been putting off for the quieter months!
I have just come back from the MidCounties Conference onboard MSC Virtuosa - what a ship! It was a 5-day sailing from Southampton and we were supposed to
be going to Cork but as there was a severe storm, we changed route to Zeebrugge instead.
With 22 bars on board, I thought that it would be difficult to bump into any of the agents, however, we did manage to catch up with a lot of them!
Just a quick reminder that this year’s Geordie Jingle Ball is on Tuesday 5th December, again at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Newcastle. It starts at 7pm with pre-dinner drinks, dinner at 7:45pm and entertainment until 1am. For more details get in touch, [email protected].
Another date for your diary - the 23rd Geordie Bash
is on Thursday 7th March 2024, at the Grand Hotel Gosforth Park, Newcastle. More details to come. It’s one of the main events in the North East and it never fails to be a fantastic night - so get the Friday booked off now!
That’s all from me, hope to see you all soon either on my visits or at the Geordie Jingle Ball,
Darren
HURTIGRUTEN EXPEDITIONS
TO REBRAND AS HX
Hurtigruten Group AS has
announced that it will be taking on a
new global brand identity, with a new name, HX and logo across all materials. The new name is a nod to Hurtigruten Expeditions and its origins.
Hurtigruten Norway’s Coastal Express returns simply to Hurtigruten, the original name of the iconic route it launched in 1893, signifying “the fast route”
in Norwegian.
The new HX brand and logo will be fully implemented starting in December, with updates to brochures, websites, and social channels; livery repainting of the fleet’s six ships will commence over the next 18 months.

Travel Matters speaks to
NICK HUGHES
Sales Director, UK and Europe Princess Cruises
How is business and future demand performing post covid?
Princess has experienced consistent growth as we continue to showcase our premium offering to our trade partners, with their customers providing overwhelmingly positive feedback after taking a Princess cruise. 2023 is on track to be a record-breaking year - we outstripped our Wave performance and this May was our strongest May on record. This is testament to the incredible support and performance from our agent partners as well as
our fantastic teams across sales, marketing and guest services, plus the onboard teams for the high standards.
Are you seeing increasing support from the trade?
We are seeing top-level support from multiple trade partners, with most growing their Princess business.
This year we have expanded our sales team, which is really paying dividends. We’ve had amazing feedback from our travel agent partners who have said how professional and efficient our sales team is and how much they enjoy doing business with us.
What tools and assistance can you offer agents who want to sell Princess?
In addition to support from our dedicated sales team, through onesourcecruises.com we provide agents with toolkits and assets to equip them with what they need to showcase our product. We offer training days, webinars, agent incentives and fam trips and this year saw our largest-ever trade engagement programme with more than 2,500 agents coming onboard our ships across the UK, Ireland and Europe – so they can experience the Princess Difference first-hand.
Princess MedallionClass was an industry leading concept making the cruise effortless and personalised for your guests - how has this been received?
Every ship in the Princess fleet is MedallionClass and we’re the only cruise line to offer this experience. Our guests love how the MedallionClass experience makes their cruise feel seamless and personalised, providing the feel of a small ship, while enjoying the amenities of a large ship. From the simplicity of ordering food and drinks to wherever you are onboard, unlocking your stateroom door as you approach and being able to locate family and friends onboard, our MedallionClass Experience is key to our differentiation.
You have a great Asia programme – what would you pick as the ‘stand out’ opportunities for agents to sell?
Princess’ Japan programme is most definitely a standout opportunity for agents to sell. The lure of Japan is ever- growing amongst UK travellers and it’s quickly becoming one of the hottest trends in travel.
All voyages are on Diamond Princess, our ship that was built in Japan, for Japan and boasts incredible Japanese features such as the Izumi bath, making exploring the country seamless and relaxing, whilst immersing guests into the rich culture and history both ashore and onboard.
Our recently announced 2025 Japan cruise season includes highlights such as a brand-new Spring Flowers cruise taking guests to all four main islands and following the predicted blooming season as it moves from south

What is your favourite Princess cruise itinerary and port of call?
I’ve yet to experience this itinerary, but my favourite has to be our 16-night Antarctica and Cape Horn voyage, currently on Sapphire Princess. Navigating your way through South America - with stops in Chile, Uruguay and Argentina - before taking in the dramatic scenery of Antarctica, really is something to behold.
Moreover, only Princess offers guests an up-close look at the wonders of the white continent at a fraction of the price of explorer ships.

SINGAPORE TOURISM BOARD LAUNCHES NEW GLOBAL MARKETING CAMPAIGN
The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) has launched Made in Singapore, its latest global campaign to inspire travellers to visit the country.
The new campaign, which puts a fresh spin on the Passion Made Possible destination brand, spotlights iconic Singapore experiences and attractions including Jewel Changi Airport, Lau Pa Sat hawker centre and Gardens by the Bay.
Mr Kenneth Lim, Assistant Chief Executive (Marketing Group), STB, said: “The Made in Singapore campaign
is anchored on our Passion Made Possible destination brand, which embodies the Singapore spirit of fulfilling individual passions and creating new possibilities.
“Through this latest campaign, we would like to reinforce Singapore as a destination that turns imagination into reality. Our goal is to showcase how everyday ordinary moments are made extraordinary and unforgettable, experienced only in Singapore - to inspire travel here.”
A study conducted in November 2021 with over 3,000 respondents across 10 overseas markets found that over 60% of people are looking for more purposeful travel and close to 80% of those planning for purposeful travel are looking for destinations that inspire them.
The new campaign conveys the spirit of Made in Singapore: with a twist on the familiar to make ordinary experiences into extraordinary, from “forest bathing” at the unexpected setting of Jewel Changi Airport’s Rain Vortex, to working up a sweat dining at Lau Pa Sat hawker centre and witnessing a colourful “air show”
at the all-new Mandai Bird Paradise.
Vietnam Airlines/Sailing Club Signature Phu Quoc and Sailing Club Mui Ne recently hosted agents on a fam trip to Vietnam.

IF YOU COULD INVITE 3 FAMOUS PEOPLE FROM
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ANY YOUNG
HISTORY TO HAVE DINNER WITH - WHO WOULD
PERSON JOINING THE TRAVEL INDUSTRY?
YOU CHOOSE AND WHY?
Be sure to listen to experienced staff and take lots of training courses. Go on educationals whenever you get the chance and enjoy the experience. We are so privileged to see some parts of the world that most people do not get the opportunity to visit.
Sid James and Barbara Windsor from the Carry On films - for their laughter!
Robin Williams for his wit!
And Freddie Mercury - he could give us a song or two.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE DESTINATION?
The Canadian Rockies. I love the sheer vastness and breathtaking beauty of the country.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE HOTEL?
That has to be a small boutique guest house overlooking Shotover River outside Queenstown, New Zealand. The rooms have fantastic panoramic views and it has the most amazing back garden overlooking the river.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MOVIE?
Shawshank Redemption. It shows that if you are determined, you can overcome anything.
WHAT WAS THE LAST CONCERT THAT YOU ATTENDED?
Elton John in Belfast. Amazing!
DO YOU HAVE A GUILTY PLEASURE?
That has to be binge watching box sets during the winter months.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR
FAVOURITE PART OF YOUR JOB?
I love it when customers return from their holidays and are happy with the recommendations I have given them.
WHAT WAS THE BEST PIECE OF BUSINESS ADVICE
YOU WERE EVER GIVEN AND BY WHOM?
Go for your goal but be kind and generous along the way. My school teacher always said that.
WHAT WAS THE MOST UNUSUAL
REQUEST FROM A CLIENT?
Gosh, there have been quite a few but you couldn’t print them!
IF TIME, DISTANCE AND COST WERE NO OBJECT,
WHAT WOULD BE YOUR PERFECT DAY?
I would stay in the ice igloos in Finland, complete with husky rides in the snow, followed by a delicious meal!
IS THERE ANYTHING THAT FRIENDS WOULD
BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?
Sorry no - no surprises! What you see, is what you get. If I’m in bad form, you will know about it but I’m glad to say mostly, I’m happy.
HAVE YOU EVER ARRANGED TRAVEL
FOR SOMEONE FAMOUS?
Yes - Paul Costelleo - the Irish designer and artist.

What is an Icelandair Stopover?
Fly across the Atlantic from the UK to North America and add a stop in Iceland for
up to 7 days – and pay no additional airfare. You can read more at icelandairacademy.com
Why Stopover in Iceland?
It’s a lot more bang for your buck. You get 2 destinations for the price of 1, and get double the fun.
Want more reasons?
• Iceland is on the way! You’re flying over Iceland, so why not stop to see it up close?
• Stretch your legs in Iceland as you prepare for North America. We have hiking trails and landscapes that will begin your holiday in style.
• Soak and pamper and recover from your time in North America. We have warm geothermal lagoons that are perfect for that.
• Get a jump on jet lag with Iceland’s fresh air and fantastic photogenic nature.
• You want nature but your travel buddy wants shopping? Our Stopover has you both covered.
• Tick more off your bucket list. How to make the most of your time in Iceland:
You can experience a lot on a short stay. You can focus on a spa Stopover for 1 day or a week filled with outdoor adventures. Mix and match to make your Stopover your own.
Did you know: The Blue Lagoon and Iceland's newest lava field are just a half an hour away from the airport. And it only takes about
a day to explore our pint-sized capital, Reykjavík.
Check out our ready-made Stopover itineraries online, which can help you get the most out of your time. And we can help in practical ways, too, with a range of easy day trips and tours bookable on our website with Icelandair Holidays.
D
Depending on the season you visit, here are some highlights you might expect on an Icelandair Stopover:
• Gaze in wonder at the northern lights (October to April is best for this).
• Soak in the warm waters of the Blue Lagoon.
• Go horseback riding through lava fields.
• Ride a snowmobile on a glacier. • Spot whales and puffins on
a boat ride (in summer).
• Explore the buzzing culture and food scene in Reykjavík, followed by live music in a cosy bar.
• Visit waterfalls and black beaches under the midnight sun (late May, June and early July are prime for this).
• Take a road trip of a few days along the awesome south coast, loaded with glaciers and waterfalls.
• Tour the Golden Circle in a day, visiting geothermal treats,
a huge waterfall, and a geological wonder-filled national park.
Have we got your attention yet? Fly with us to the USA or Canada and add an Icelandair Stopover. The question isn’t whether you choose a big-city break in New York or a nature break in Iceland. The question is, why not both?

Gregorz:diary The social diary of a bear (71⁄4 inches tall)
Hi there Peeps!
Hope you all had as busy a summer as I did and are now getting ready for a strong Autumn selling period.
My buddy, King of the Skies David Sanderson invited me to the Emirates soirée, in conjunction with Glasgow Airport and Jumeirah Hotels & Resorts. It was a thank you night for all the trade support of their daily A380 service to Dubai. I was happy to oblige for my friends at Emirates. Next year they celebrate 20 years flying from Glasgow and there is sure to be a party – David, call my social secretary!
It was an amazing festival-like event and easyJet Holiday’s organisation and hospitality was, as you would expect, first class.
With over 10 years in the making, William Young - Mr Scenic/Emerald himself, finally welcomed the stunning Scenic Eclipse II into Scotland and I was delighted to be on the guest list. This ultra luxury super yacht is simply breathtaking inside and out.
With its all-inclusive proposition
and the unique benefit of carrying
its own helicopters and submarine
(at additional charge), combined
with some outstanding itineraries worldwide, this product really stands out and is something all agents should look to recommend to their
Fresh out of the box and in pristine condition, Explora I came sailing by and I was there waiting on the quayside to give it the once over.... and wow is she fantastic!

If they say Orange is the new Black
– then easyJet Holidays took it to another level at their recent BOP (Big Orange Party) for the travel trade. John Docherty, their fantastic contact in the North, said they couldn’t have a party without me, so I happily accepted. Orange branded suitcase packed – check, orange feather boa looked out
– check, paracetamol – check!

The event was in conjunction with Jumeirah Hotels & Resorts with
Clare Hamilton, Global Sales Manager introducing several of her colleagues representing their properties in locations as varied as The Maldives, Mallorca, Dubai and Paris. The agents enjoyed great presentations on each property for this fabulous hotel group.
