LUFTHANSA TAKES OFF FOR
QATAR AIRWAYS TO INCREASE SERVICES FROM EDINBURGH AIRPORT
Qatar Airways has announced that it will increase services on its Edinburgh to Doha route in 2023. The airline will operate ten flights each week on a B787-800 type aircraft, commencing this February.
Kate Sherry, Aviation Director at Edinburgh Airport, said: “This increase in frequency is a real show of faith in the Edinburgh market and we’re looking forward to working with Qatar Airways to further enhance and develop this important route to Doha in the future.
“Offering passengers choice is something that’s really important to us at Edinburgh, and these additional flights will open up Qatar and onward connectivity to even more people in 2023.”
The increase in frequency will see Qatar provide a daily afternoon service between Edinburgh and Doha and a morning service on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
BELFAST CITY AIRPORT
Lufthansa has announced that it will enter the Northern Irish market for the very first time, with operations commencing from George Best Belfast City Airport this spring, with four times weekly direct flights to Frankfurt commencing 23rd April 2023.
Katy Best, Commercial Director at Belfast City Airport commented: “Attracting an airline such as Lufthansa to Northern Ireland that will provide the only route from the region to Germany is a major win for, not only the airport, but the wider tourism and business industry.
“With Germany being the third-largest market for overseas tourism to the island of Ireland, there is a clear demand
for direct connectivity. Frankfurt is an important city for commerce, culture and tourism and its airport is one of the busiest in Europe.
“As a base for Lufthansa, Frankfurt is a key destination in its network and gives passengers an attractive option for connecting flights to markets further afield.
“Lufthansa’s commitment to excellent customer service and great value makes it a superb fit for Belfast City Airport and we look forward to welcoming passengers travelling to Frankfurt and beyond to the terminal.”
Flights to Frankfurt will be operated on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays by an Embraer aircraft and will offer both Business and Economy class services.
LOGANAIR LAUNCHES BIGGEST
EVER NEWCASTLE EXPANSION
Loganair has unveiled its biggest-ever programme of flights for Newcastle Airport for summer 2023.
The expansion plans include the return of up to double daily flights to Aberdeen, together with the addition of a Newcastle to Oslo via Aberdeen route, where passengers boarding at Newcastle can stay on the plane until disembarkation in Norway.
The airline has also increased the frequency of its Southampton service from two to up to three flights daily. The Aberdeen to Southampton flight returns, operating via Newcastle and customers will not need to leave the aircraft on the one-stop service.
Customers will also be able to fly to Newquay and Bergen twice a week, while flights to Exeter have been increased from three to up to five per week. Up to five flights per week will also operate between Newcastle and Stavanger.
Luke Lovegrove, Chief Commercial Officer at Loganair, said: “This bumper schedule for 2023 underlines
our commitment to Newcastle with our biggest ever programme for the city, offering customers more choice of destinations, frequency and capacity than ever before.”

JANUARY 2023
Hello and welcome everyone to my latest update on our SPAA.
A brand New Year with some old and some new challenges affecting our industry and trading capabilities will continue to be addressed by the SPAA to ensure maximum value and that those involved in the decision making processes are fully aware of any potential impact on the Scottish travel trade.
Our council is energised and ready
to pick up the baton to engage with internal industry bodies and other external sources right through to discussions with the political parties in Holyrood and Westminster. Our aim remains and is always at the forefront of our actions to ensure that our voice is heard loud and clear for the benefit of all our members and associates.
Overall pressures continue in the market ranging from inflation, high cost of utility bills, the ongoing war
in the Ukraine, border control staff strikes and the latest issue being the reintroduction of testing before travel for Chinese passengers affecting the global economy and the quantity of disposable income which is allocated to leisure and business pursuits.
Let’s hope that things will resolve themselves quickly, particularly the conflict in Ukraine which is taking a heavy toll on the local population.
Further ahead on the horizon will be the anticipated request from the CAA for more feedback from the industry relating to the proposed changes for ATOL reform. It’s unclear as yet of course which way it will go but it looks like agents will now be required to use trusts, escrow or individual accounts for clients’ monies and those that previously relied on customers cash for working capital will no longer be able to. No doubt the smaller ATOL holder will be most greatly affected, time will tell.
There is lots of positive news and mostly notably will be the introduction of Delta’s service from Edinburgh
to Atlanta in May. This will bring valuable and much needed additional availability to the USA and many more destination options beyond for both the leisure and business traveller
from Scotland and of course the additional flights from Qatar Airways (congratulations to Jill Niven) and the ongoing essential presence of Emirates (congratulations to David Sanderson on his appointment too).
THE VOICE OF TRAVEL IN SCOTLAND
At our AGM, prior to our very successful Christmas Lunch at Citation in Glasgow, we saw some long serving members of Council retire and we thank them for all their work and support over the years. The newly elected members on Council will bring a fresh perspective on our work and
we are looking forward to hearing their ideas and to working with them.
The SPAA council is primed and ready and we welcome any feedback on industry issues that prospectively may need addressing from all of our Members and Associates. We will be reaching out to you not only via the main council, but also with our recent initiative of the creation of our new Advisory Group made up of various key individuals involved in our Sparkle awards and others who wish to actively contribute.
Most projections are predicting a busy year for the industry and lots of pent up travel demand still out there, so let’s hope this is indeed the case and we all get off to a flying start in January.
Finally I would like to take this oppor- tunity to wish Jo Rzymowska, who was our very excellent guest speaker at last year’s dinner, the very best for the future after her departure from Celebrity Cruises later on this year. I am looking forward to chairing my second dinner on 23rd February with our exciting speakers which will be Willie Walsh and Baroness Ruth Davidson.
Take care and stay safe,
Mike Tibbert SPAA President

Lindsey has in-depth knowledge of Visit Malta and was formerly responsible for marketing and business development for Malta’s business, event and wedding markets.
AGS Airports is celebrating after all its airports won the Sword of Honour from the British Safety Council.
The latest accolade comes after the British Safety Council gave Aberdeen, Glasgow and Southampton Airports a Five Star Rating earlier this year.
In order to compete for the Sword of Honour, an organisation first has to achieve the maximum five stars in the British Safety Council’s health and safety management audit scheme. Each airport was presented with a ceremonial sword at the British Safety Council in London.
To be recognised by the British Safety Council, the Airports had to demonstrate to an independent panel of experts that it has achieved excellence in its health and safety management throughout the business.
Derek Provan, Chief Executive of AGS Airports, said: “This is the first time all three of our airports have been recognised in the same year with Swords of Honours.
“The health and safety of staff and passengers at our airports is paramount and we thank the panel of experts for recognising our ongoing commitment to safety.
“AGS Airports is extremely proud of all our colleagues and business partners who made this hattrick of Sword of Honours possible.”

EDINBURGH AIRPORT EARNS TOP
RATING FOR ACCESSIBILITY SERVICE
Edinburgh Airport has earned the highest possible rating for accessibility provision after the service was brought in-house.
In a report published by the Civil Aviation Authority, the airport was rated ‘very good’ for the assistance it provides passengers with disabilities and those who require additional support travelling through the airport.
Between January and November 2022 there were 85,000 passengers who were supported by the airport’s special assistance service.
This rating recognises the work of the Edinburgh Airport Services Limited team after the service was brought in- house in April 2021. The airport took the decision so it could invest directly and have direct management and oversight of the service.
Adam Wilson, Edinburgh Airport Operations Director, said: “It’s incredibly important to us that all passengers who require assistance are given the support they need when travelling through the airport and that’s why this rating from the CAA is one we’re really proud of.
“I’ve seen first-hand how passionately our teams have been working to deliver this service and how seriously they take their responsibility to passengers.
“This rating is a testament to their efforts and comes following a challenging 2022 which brought with it a rise in passenger numbers like never before.
“In recent years we have made a number of changes to our accessibility provision which have improved it for the better. We’ll aim to continue that progress in order to create the best possible experience for all passengers.”
May all your troubles last as long as your New Year's resolutions!

Where’s William?
My time along the Rhine...
It had been a while since I had cruised the wonderful River Rhine and so I was very excited to be joining Scenic Jasper a few weeks ago with several lovely agent partners cruising from Amsterdam. Let me tell you about my experience.
Arriving at Schiphol airport in Amsterdam, we were greeted by our Scenic ground staff before joining our transfer to the ship in downtown Amsterdam - the journey with us is seamless from start to finish. Settling into our balcony suite on Scenic Jasper really set the mood for what would be
an incredible, but short, part of this longer Amsterdam to Budapest journey. Before long my butler, Max, was knocking at the door to make sure all was in order and to find out my mini bar preferences (all included, of course).
The entertainment in the evenings was provided by our resident Enrichment Manager and made for an excellent evening for all – on board there were guests from the UK, Australia, Canada, USA and South Korea who all became good friends over the coming days.
During the days, we enjoyed an included Scenic Freechoice e-bike excursion to the majestic Cologne cathedral, relaxed on the Sun Deck taking in the incredible views of the Rhine Gorge and took a cable car ride to the top of the hills to see the most breathtaking landscapes and vineyards along the Rhine (see pic).
We did not want to depart this amazing cruise and were very jealous of the remaining passengers who would experience incredible scenes along the way to the majestic city of Budapest. When you travel on a Scenic River Cruise in Europe, you are treated to a truly all-inclusive, luxury journey that will create memories of a lifetime for your guests.
Book now for your customers to enjoy free Business Class flights on their Scenic or Emerald Cruises 2023 Europe river cruise. When you make a booking before 28th February, you’ll be entered into a prize draw to WIN your very own #MomentofWonder - from helicopter rides to private vineyard tours.

The first Emirates A380 to be completely refurbished under the airline’s US$ 2 billion retrofit programme has been deployed on the Dubai-London Heathrow service, operating as EK003.
Sir Tim Clark, President Emirates Airline said: “Customers will notice the difference the moment they step onboard - the spacious A380 will look and feel even more impressive
and comfortable.
“With our latest interiors and products, this newly refurbished aircraft elevates our inflight experience in all classes of
travel and enables us to offer more Premium Economy seats to meet customer demand. I’m particularly proud that this refurbishment work was designed, conducted and completed in house at our facilities in Dubai, to the highest standards
of quality and safety. It reflects the world-class aviation capabilities and infrastructure that exists within Emirates, and here in the UAE.”
The next Emirates A380 aircraft lined up for its make-over is A6-EUW and work is expected to be completed by the end of this month.
By 2024, all 67 A380s assigned for refurbishment will have returned to service. Emirates will then begin work on its 53 Boeing 777s earmarked for this project. The airline expects to complete the programme in 2025.

In conversation with...
MURRAY BURNETT
Managing Director, Munro’s Travel
MUNROS OBVIOUSLY HAS A LOT OF HISTORY - TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE COMPANY AND HOW YOU ENDED UP THERE
Munro’s celebrates its 120th birthday this year and began with Mr Munro selling rail tickets, before branching out into travel for north-east families emigrating to North America and Australia. In the 1970s the retail division was opened and on ‘free child places’ days there were queues around the block.
The discovery of oil in the North Sea led to the creation of the business division which today forms the core of Munro’s – travel management to the energy and renewables sector.
I followed my father into the business in 1990.
HOW BADLY DID THE PANDEMIC AFFECT THE OIL & GAS INDUSTRY?
Initially, when everything ground to a total halt, the impact was huge for travellers... and for our team.
We were inundated with requests for refunds and rebookings as we worked to establish home working for our staff. But, the energy sector can’t stop producing and offshore and marine rotating crew were classified as essential workers receiving exemptions for entering locations which were banned for non-essential travellers.
The role of our travel consultants became even more critical as we entered the new territories of providing information on Covid restrictions and testing regimes. It also brought some new opportunities like private charters too.
WHAT DO YOU THINK THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES ARE FOR BUSINESS TRAVEL GOING FORWARD?
The risk of new Covid variants remains and we’re much more aware that new – and ever changing – quarantine requirements may be reintroduced. Duty of care – which has always been very high on the agenda for essential workers – now has an even sharper focus. However, Covid is not the only ‘travel disrupter’ which may be over the horizon; continued travel disruption due to strikes is ever present.
The biggest challenge, which is also our biggest opportunity as a sector and a business, is sustainability and the need to adopt more sustainable practices as the threats of climate change increase.
ANY ADVICE FOR A YOUNG PERSON CONSIDERING A CAREER IN THE INDUSTRY?
One of the main challenges facing travel is attracting and retaining new talent. Our industry needs to invest
in developing skills and experience for our new recruits.
Munro’s established a Travel Academy in 2009 as we found it hard to recruit travel consultants who specialised in essential travel. It’s been hugely successful for us and remains an integral part of our recruitment policy. Today over 40% of our travel consultants have come through our academy and remain with us. So, my advice is to find a business willing to invest in your continued professional development.
DO YOU TRAVEL A LOT ON THE JOB? IF SO, DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVOURITE CITIES/PLACES?
As you would expect, I absolutely love travelling and am fortunate to travel regularly through the various aspects of my job.
I have visited many wonderful places in my career, however, Houston remains one of my favourite cities to visit. Munro’s has a long relationship with the city based on the synergy with Aberdeen’s oil and gas sector.
In fact, the City of Houston declared that the 5th May 2003 was officially “Munro’s/Press and Journal Day” to recognise our role in bringing tens of thousands of international delegates to the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC).

TRAVEL TRENDS FOR 2023
easyJet and easyJet holidays have revealed the latest travel trends for 2023 as bookings took off during the first days of its Big Orange Sale.
Flights to North African destinations have experienced the greatest rise in popularity compared to 2019, with Tunisia seeing the biggest boost of sales, followed by Egypt, while Morocco has also seen demand increase compared to pre-pandemic.
Trips to the Greek Islands are also proving to be popular, including Rhodes, Kos, Crete, Santorini and Zante.
Other destinations on the up include Tirana in Albania and Tivat in Montenegro, which offer an alternative to Italy and Croatia for those wishing to explore the Adriatic coast, as well as Dalaman and Antalya in Turkey.
Beach island trips to Tenerife, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands as well as Cyprus and Madeira have also experienced an increase in demand as well as last minute ski breaks to France and Italy.
All inclusive breaks were proving most popular for package trips with easyJet holidays while beach holidays to Tenerife topped the table and Amsterdam proved to be the most popular city package.
The booking data also showed that almost two-thirds (64%) of Brits are planning to prioritise a trip abroad in 2023.

SHEARINGS SCRAPS SINGLE
ROOM SUPPLEMENTS
Shearings has announced that no single room supplements will be charged for solo travellers staying in single-occupancy rooms at 27 of the Coast & Country Hotels featured in the company’s UK holiday brochures. This offer is applicable to both coach holidays and self-drive hotel breaks.
The Coast & Country Hotels with no single room supplement include historical country houses and prime-position seafront accommodation, such as the Royal Hotel, Whitby, the Imperial Hotel, Tenby and the Windermere Hotel in the Lake District.
Shearings’ head of retail sales, Ashley Dellow said: “We absolutely understand why hotels charge a single supplement but it’s really good news that we can now offer a great selection of UK holidays with no single room supplement.
“The number of customers choosing to travel solo is increasing year-on-year and we’re pleased to be able to encourage this. Customers shouldn’t be put off going on holiday because they have no one to share a room with, or they prefer privacy.
“There is limited availability on single-occupancy rooms at each hotel and agents should urge their customers to book early to secure their preferred dates with
no supplement.”
Double/twin rooms designed for two people to share will still incur a supplement for sole occupancy.

GRENADA’S NOVEMBER VISITOR
NUMBERS SURPASS 2019
The Grenada Tourism Authority has reported a significant rise in the number of visitor arrivals, with a total of 14,232 visitors in November 2022, representing a 17% increase over 2019 figures. December is also projected to surpass the previous high of December 2019.
This last quarter of 2022 has seen the return of all international flights into Grenada, including the expansion of British Airways’ flight schedule from London Gatwick, which now includes a third flight to Maurice Bishop International Airport on Sundays.
Air Canada now has a twice weekly service and regionally, Caribbean Airlines Limited now provides a daily service from Trinidad and Tobago.
CEO of the Grenada Tourism Authority Petra Roach stated, “During the pandemic, we did a lot of ground- work putting systems in place to create a more efficient operation and strengthened our overseas sales teams.
“Our digital footprint has expanded significantly and a lot of time was prioritised for deepening the relationships with our distribution channels in the marketplace, such as our travel agent and tour operator partners, to better understand how their businesses align with our product.”
LAUNCHES NEW
BRAND IDENTITY
Celebrating 40 years of tours, Newmarket Holidays has launched a brand refresh to better reflect its identity and showcase the escorted tour specialist’s range of holidays.
The updated design will appear on future brochures, marketing materials and across all customer touchpoints.
With the expansion of its long-haul portfolio, which features culturally and experientially rich tours and specifically- designed small group programmes, changes to the logo, fonts and colour palette express the operator’s brand values.
The new logo provides a visual link to Newmarket Holidays’ heritage by retaining the sunburst detail that has been part of the company’s logo since 1988.
Newmarket Holidays has also launched its new 2023/24 brochure, featuring the company’s latest tour launches, including a Mayan Adventure in Mexico, a safari adventure to the Victoria Falls and a new tour of Tuscany, Rome and the Amalfi Coast.
The new brochure also
features destination
facts, customer quotes
and expert tips from the
product team that show
travellers how they can
benefit by travelling with
an experienced tour operator, rather than planning their own adventure. Tours are organised in new holiday categories that make it easier for agents to navigate.
Categories include City Adventures, Coastal Escapes and Best Sellers and every holiday is highlighted as being best for solos, couples, multi-generational or family travellers, reflecting
a widening interest in adventurous escorted tours that has emerged as a reaction to pandemic travel restrictions.
David Sharman, Newmarket Holidays Chief Commercial Officer says: “For our new brochure, we felt it was vital to reflect the changing face of escorted tours to best showcase the huge range of wishlist holidays we can now offer for every type of traveller.
“With a new safari tour to Africa, an additional Italian tour and Mexico as a brand new destination, the choice for this year and beyond is bigger than ever, giving agents lots of exciting opportunities to help their customers make new stories
Our team is on the road and presenting the new brochure to agents.”
Newmarket Holidays is offering savings of up to 15% on all escorted tours with departure dates for 2023/24, with the discount available until 28th February 2023.

Here’s what agents can expect when reaching each stage of the Advocates programme:

Agents won’t be required to submit bookings to the Advocates programme manually; each region’s Wendy Wu Sales Executive will track and log all bookings on the agents’ behalf. All the agent has to do is book a Wendy Wu tour and the rest is taken care of.
Gary King, Head of Trade Sales at Wendy Wu Tours says: “We are very excited to be launching this brand new incentive programme at Wendy Wu Tours, as it will ensure that we reward those agents that are the most loyal and supportive to our brand and range of products.

TAKE TO THE SLOPES ON WHISTLER BLACKCOMB
With one of the longest ski resort seasons in North America, Whistler Blackcomb is open for skiing and snowboarding until 22nd May, 2023.
Long-term weather forecasters are predicting that it will be another great winter for skiing and snowboarding, on top of Whistler’s reliably deep average snowfall of 10.8 metres (35.5 feet) every year and extensive snowmaking infrastructure.
The resort was recently voted number one in Condé Nast Traveller Readers’ Choice Awards Best Ski Resorts in the World (North America) 2022.
This season will see new upgrades to improve wait times, including a new high-speed 10-person gondola replacing the six-person Creekside Gondola and the Big Red Express Chairlift, which will increase its capacity from four to six people per chair.
Also new this season is an expansion of ski and ride camps for women, including options for beginner to advanced skiers and snowboarders.
This winter will also see the return of a number of events, including the World Ski and Snowboard Festival, Fire
and Ice Shows, the 37th Annual Peak to Valley Race and Whistler Cup.
