January 2024: Bored, Yet? Why do people get bored? The feeling of boredom is when brains struggle to fill time. People may feel restless or have a lack of interest in their surroundings. Boredom is common, with over 60% of U.S. adults reporting that they feel bored at least once a week. People's brains rarely are bored while focused on taking part in demanding tasks like work or school, or while taking part in a good conversation. When these activities are done, people experience fatigue and seek ways to entertain themselves and their brains. Play and entertainment have been ways humans have figured out to overcome boredom. Adults read, spend time with hobbies or tell stories to avoid boredom. Before the advent of TV and mobile devices, children overcame boredom by going outside or playing with a friend or sibling. Today, electronics capture a significant amount of people's attention. But this readily accessible medium may have swung too far in capturing people's attention. Instead of short-term relief from boredom, many people spend hours on electronics. It's easy not to feel the passage of time while scrolling TikTok or watching YouTube videos. Quickly, an hour or two can pass without a person realizing it. For all that time spent, people don't necessarily feel refreshed. Rather, most people experience greater fatigue. Consuming so much time on electronics lessens the amount of bored time, but also it causes a different problem. The less people experience boredom, the less equipped the brain is to deal with it. What makes an effective album cover? WHY ALBUM COVER ART IS IMPORTANT Designing effective album cover artwork is crucial. Cover art is the visual gateway to your music. It’s also the image listeners will associate with your music. First impressions are key to music discovery. Your album art will often grab someone’s attention before they listen to your music. Especially on digital music platforms. Potential fans are also more likely to listen to your music when your album artwork stands out. Album cover art is also an essential part of music promotion and music distribution. The design you use to present your music is another way of branding yourself. It’s a reflection of your style as much as your music! Your album cover art should follow these specs to meet the requirements of most major music retailers and streaming services. Many music distributors will reject cover art that doesn’t meet these guidelines. These best practices also offer tips for creating quality album cover art. MUSIC DISTRIBUTION GUIDELINES A minimum size of 3000 x 3000 pixels (a perfect square). A minimum resolution of 72dpi (300dpi for best quality). JPEG file format (not all music retailers accept PNG or GIF). RGB color mode for best quality (CMYK may not show up correctly). Images must not be blurry, pixelated, misaligned, or have other quality issues. Only include text stating the artist name and release title. The copy should match your release info and metadata exactly. It’s also ok to use an image without text. Most music platforms display the artist and release info next to the cover art. Do not add text that says “Exclusive,” “Limited Edition,” “New Release,” the release date, or anything else that states a time frame. Keep your cover art timeless. Cover art must not contain URLs, logos, or any reference to a Digital Service Provider, record label, website, or other brands. Do not include email addresses, social media logos, URLs, or any other contact information. Do not include references to pricing. For example, “Available for $1.99,” “Low Price,” or “For Promo Use.” Cover art must not reference the format as a physical or digital product. For example, CD, DVD, or Digital Exclusive. Cover art must not contain pornography or inappropriate images of any kind. Avoid UPC barcodes and ISRCs. The music retailer or distribution service will provide them. Also, if you re-release, those codes may change. Cover art must not reference content the release doesn’t include. For example, “included DVD” or “includes lyrics.” Cover art must not be misleading. For example, referencing an artist that does not perform on the release. Creating eye-catching album cover art is a vital part of releasing music, gaining fans, reaching new audiences, and advancing your music career. These general guidelines will ensure your cover art meets the requirements of major music retailers and streaming services. They will also help you create effective art that will grab someone’s attention and get your music heard! Editor in Chief Thomas R. Carley Jr. EDITOR'S NOTE: JANUARY 2024

Epilogue: Trumpets: How, Why, When The trumpet is much more than a musical instrument. In fact, the trumpet is a part of world history. For thousands of years, the trumpet has played an essential role in almost every civilization on the planet. The first known metal trumpets can be traced back to around 1500BC. Silver and bronze trumpets were discovered in the grave of King Tut in Egypt, and other ancient versions of the instrument were found in China, South America, Scandinavia, and Asia. Since most inventions spawn from earlier forms, there's also good reason to assume that people have been blowing into objects to create sounds for even longer than that. For example, some civilizations blew into an animal horn or conch shell to produce a sound. Many of these earlier examples were not used to make music as we know it today. Typically, they were used for religious and military purposes, which historians have pointed out in major religious writings and other historical records. In medieval times, for example, trumpeters were highly guarded by military units, since they were crucial to relaying instructions over great distances. In modern times, the "bugle" is still used by militaries, but mainly for paying respect to its past use. Instrument design, as well as metal making, improved tremendously over the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, which made these "natural trumpets" more suitable for creating actual music. However, these trumpets did not have valves and could only produce a small amount of notes. Also, changing the key meant that you had to change different pipes on the horn. The natural trumpets peak of popularity was during the Baroque area; but in recent years it has seen somewhat of a resurgence. In fact, many examples of the "natural trumpet" can be found easily on You Tube. Editor in Chief Thomas R. Carley Jr. EPILOGUE

January 2024: Writer's Block: The Cure Most writers experience writer’s block at some point in their life, at various stages of the writing process. Often a solution can be found by speaking with your instructor (if you are a student) or a writing tutor. But there are ways to combat writer’s block on your own, too! IF YOU'RE HAVING TROUBLE FINDING A STARTING PLACE FOR THE ASSIGNMENT... Brainstorm topics that are interesting to you. Use the invention strategies suggested by a tutor or teacher to generate questions or thoughts that serve as useful starting places. Write down all the primary ideas you'd like to express and then fill in each with the smaller ideas that make up each primary idea. This can easily be converted into an outline. If your paper involves conducting research, you can look for places where you disagree with another thinker’s claim or feel more work needs to be done. Identifying gaps or conflicts in the existing conversation around a topic is often a great starting place. IF YOU HAVE A TOPIC AND AN OUTLINE, BUT CAN’T THINK OF AN INTERESTING BEGINNING… Try beginning in the middle. Start writing at whatever point you like, and leave the introduction or first section until later. The reader will never know that you wrote the paper "backwards." Besides, some writers routinely save the introduction until later when they have a clearer idea of what the main idea and purpose of the piece will be. After the paper is completely drafted, you can get all the sections in the correct order and read it start-to-finish to ensure that transitions are smooth. IF YOU’RE SO STRESSED OUT THAT YOU CAN’T SEEM TO PUT A WORD ON THE PAGE… Take a short break! If you’re close to a deadline and worried about losing track of time, then set a timer for ten or fifteen minutes and use that short window to relax before getting back to work. Stretch, move away from your desk, and don’t neglect your sleeping and eating schedule. It’s much harder to write if you’re sleep-deprived or dehydrated. Finally, ask for help! Writing is most stressful when you’re doing it by yourself for a long period of time. Asking a tutor or a friend to talk through your ideas can help you get some perspective on the assignment, and remind you that it’s nothing to be anxious about. Epilogue: The Power of Reading According to a Gallup poll published in 2022, in 2021 Americans read roughly 12 books a year, amounting to around one a month. That number is the lowest it's been since Gallup began tracking Americans' reading habits back in 1990. Whether the decline in reading books is the result of busy lifestyles or the lure of binge-watching the latest series on TV, the time has come to get back on the book bandwagon. If the latest bestseller is collecting dust on your nightstand, knowing the benefits of reading might be just the motivation you need to pick it back up. Reading books can help us become more compassionate, empathetic people. Like the rest of your body, your brain needs exercise to help keep it working at its best. Reading books is one way to help keep your mind sharp. While the jury is still out on if reading can prevent dementia, research suggests that older people who read more than those who don't appear to have a reduced risk of cognitive decline. High levels of stress are associated with a variety of physical and mental problems, making stress management essential to personal wellness. Engaging in stress-relieving activities, like reading books, is an easy way to help keep cortisol levels down. Can reading make you smarter? In short, yes. Of course, it’s complicated and any number of things contribute to a person's overall knowledge and intelligence. If you've ever gotten lost in a book, then you can attest to this: Reading a book simply makes you feel good. Entertainment is as much of a perk of reading as all those positive psychological and scientific benefits. Divisiveness has been on the rise in recent years, leading to what many consider to be a disconnect between people and decline of community. While every issue can't obviously be solved by reading a book, picking one up can be beneficial in helping close the gap. Thomas R Carley Jr Editor in Chief EPILOGUE

January 2024: What is Heaven? Heaven, or the heavens, is a common religious cosmological or transcendent supernatural place where beings such as deities, angels, souls, saints, or venerated ancestors are said to originate, be enthroned, or reside. According to the beliefs of some religions, heavenly beings can descend to Earth or incarnate and earthly beings can ascend to Heaven in the afterlife or, in exceptional cases, enter Heaven without dying. Heaven is often described as a "highest place", the holiest place, a Paradise, in contrast to hell or the Underworld or the "low places" and universally or conditionally accessible by earthly beings according to various standards of divinity, goodness, piety, faith, or other virtues or right beliefs or simply divine will. Some believe in the possibility of a heaven on Earth in a world to come. Heaven is the realm of afterlife where good actions in the previous life are rewarded for eternity (hell being the place where bad behavior is punished). Some have argued that a belief in a reward after death is poor motivation for moral behavior while alive. Sam Harris wrote, "It is rather more noble to help people purely out of concern for their suffering than it is to help them because you think the Creator of the Universe wants you to do it, or will reward you for doing it, or will punish you for not doing it. The problem with this linkage between religion and morality is that it gives people bad reasons to help other human beings when good reasons are available.
