Grapevine: January 2024

January 2024: Boredom and the Consequences Boredom is an emotion or signal that lets you know that you are doing something that doesn’t give you satisfaction. Boredom could tell you two things: that you are not fully present and engaged in your current task or that your task is not meaningful to you. Boredom often includes feeling like your tasks are useless and not challenging. If you feel that you are forced to do activities that don’t serve a purpose or have meaningful goals, you’re more likely to have negative emotions towards the tasks. Boredom is based on attention. Someone who feels bored may not feel stimulated. You may feel unfulfilled and not able to feel a connection to your surroundings. Boredom can appear in two ways: lethargy (feeling tired) or agitation (feeling irritated). Boredom can manifest when you’re unable to focus your attention. This can be because you are consumed by multiple stressors in your surroundings. If you’re stressed out about something else, and your present situation is overly-stimulating, you may feel bored. This happens because you can’t focus on anything but what’s stressing you out. Boredom can show itself in many ways, but these are a few common experiences: Lack of interest in activities Unable to stay interested for more than brief periods Unable to rest or relax No feeling of excitement Difficulty staying motivated Boredom can make you feel sad, tired, hopeless, uninterested, irritable, and many other difficult emotions. It can be hard to change your circumstances when boredom has reduced your focus and initiative. If boredom is impacting your quality of life, it may be time to look for support. Consider finding a therapist or psychologist to help you overcome boredom and find purpose and passion in your life. Editor in Chief Thomas R. Carley Jr. EDITOR'S NOTE

There is a famous saying “Life is like a mirror, we get the best results when we smile atit”. A deep and wonderfulthought, Lemongrass aka Roland Voss has drawn inspiration from while creating his brand new longplayer. Once again Roland Voss is demonstrating mastery at capturing the beauty in the scenes of everyday life. With an eclectic knack for a modern electronic sound design, a lush instrumentation spiced with fine acoustics, “Mirror Of Life” soars over vast and beautiful, mainly nature inspired soundscapes. Always on a mission to expand into the sonic universe of Downtempo, Electronica, Chillout and Ambient, Roland Voss has steadily pushed forward to reveal new dimensions beyond genre limitations. As to be witnessed on these twelve songs on “MirrorOf Life”. All doors stood open to let in elements and impulses from a wide selection of styles and sounds. Whether with some charming summerish Lo-Fi beats on “The Sea And The Sky”, a stompy but melodic Deep House groove (“A New Age”), or a delicate piano theme spiced with a wistful saxophone on “Being One” – just to name a few examples. Not to forget Japanese singer Mayu, who is spreading her love over two songs. She has been a guest singer on Lemongrass album releases before (“Ikebaba” and “Pour l’amour”). While listening, the impression of an organically grown full-circle is arising. A quality signature, which over the years became a landmark to all Lemongrass releases. So feel invited to have a look in this acoustic “Mirror of life”. It’s made to make you smile, and mostlikely the world will smile back. Being labeled a Christian Rock band does not bring you swarms and swarms of fans to your Myspace or show. This would explain why there was not much of a media push for Detroit’s very own Search The City. Search The City has not been handed a silver platter despite having great musicianship. Before their Tooth & Nail full-length, “A Fire So Big the Heavens Can See It,” Search The City independently released an EP entitled, “Ghosts.” Josh Frost (Vocals) has stated that he would describe Search The City’s sound as, “progressive rock or something like that.” When working on their debut album, they had experience behind them with James Paul Wisner. Wisner has also produced Dashboard Confessional, Underoath, and The Academy Is. Does this band have any potential or are they just another new band on the scene that will be left in the dust? It all starts out with anOrgan during the intro of “Son of a Gun”. Josh Frost is the lead vocalist of Search The city and he has a nice singing voice that really gels with the band’s sound. When other members of the band make appearances as backing vocalists, they are in great spots for backing vocals. Josh’s delivery is what makes every song sound special. Josh also likes to vary the way he delivers his voice to fit with what the song asks for, but to also change up the songs a bit, so they all do not sound alike. The best delivery I have heard in a while on modern rock albums is found on the song, “Ambulance Chaser”. The vocalist actually sings on “Talk is Cheap and I’ve Got Expensive”. One negative aspect of Josh is that his range is not that wide. It should not be too much of a problem with the sound Search The City is going for, though. Epilogue: Thoughts are just thoughts. Thoughts are not facts. Thoughts are not meaningful. The content of your thoughts is not important. What is important is how you treat your mind. If you take everything it says seriously, give it too much respect, and put too much trust in your mind, that is a recipe for an anxiety disorder. There is a healthier way to approach your mind: don't take it so seriously. Don't believe everything it says. Don't treat your mind as a trustworthy source of information, especially about the things that make you anxious. Don't get me wrong, you don't have a bad mind. It's not that your mind feeds you meaningless, negative thoughts and everyone else's mind is on target. This is how all minds work. Your mind is just doing what minds do. Our minds like to warn us about stuff because our minds think they are keeping us safe by doing this. Your mind would always rather err on the side of giving you a warning than not because it is more likely to keep you physically safe that way, and your mind cares about that more than anything. But just because your mind is doing its job, that doesn't mean the thoughts actually mean anything. Again, thoughts are just thoughts. Thomas R. Carley Jr. Editor in Chief EPILOGUE
