35TH AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL SQUARE DANCE CONVENTION,
INCORPORATED
INTERIM REPORT,
ADELAIDE, 1992
Our bid last year was , as you may recal l. a limited one in that we
have insufficient local dancers to ake on the tasks of organising
transport and accommodation . Ne ertheless , we have appointed Ansett
Australia as our official internal airline and they will be happy t o
organise some levels of accommodation for participa ts . We also
envisage providing registrants with a list of various motels and
caravan parks that they might contact individually . e will not .
however , arrange for spaces to be set aside in advance .
TIMING
We are no~ planning to hold the Convention from Thursday (Trail in)
21 April to ~1onday (Trail out) 5 April, 1994 - the Anzac Day
weekend . We felt that to go for Easter would be somewhat too soon
after Perth. To go for October (Canberra F10riadel would both suffer
from a lack of a Public Holida and place future Convention
~ganisers i n a worse timing dilemma than we faced . Clearly no ne
i~their right mind would be attracted to a Winter Convention in
Canberra . So , we settled on Anzac weeken We recognise that this
contravenes Clause 5.02 of the Constitution and seek a dispensation
from the operation of that Clause .
VENUE
We have again managed to secure the Australian Institute of Sport ' s
(AIS indoor stadium at Bruce, the venue ~e used for 1984. It b s a
floor area of some 2,190 sq . metres and so should accommodate up to
1750 dancers on the floor . Several changes ha e been made or are
being made 0 that venue with the result that we shall be able to
hold all meetings on the same campus . On the down side . however,
there is every chance that the ACT Government will have converted the
otherwise ample parking facilities to PAY PARKING by then!
Tours of t he total AIS complex can be arrange for groups of 15 or
more on demand and the spor ing facilities (eg Pool, Tennis Courts)
will be open to participants.
2ND HALL
Unfor unately, the gymnasium that we used as a second hall in 1984 is
now permanently equipped and so unavailable to us . As a second hall,
therefore, e will be using he Bru e TAPE College hall . This bas a
floor area of approximatel_ 720 sq . metres and should accommodate up
to 580 dancers . It is the hall that we sed in 1984 for the rail-in
and trail-out dances . Slow-strolling , it is about 15 minutes from
the main hall (7 minutes if you walk fast!) .
Bearing in mind the uncertainty of weather conditions, we are looking
losely at the ossibility of providing a shuttle- bus be ween he
halls.
FOOTWEAR
BOTH Halls place restrictions on the type of footwear allowed on the
floor . We have negotiated an agreement that leather soles and rubber
heels will be allowed PROVIDED there are no nails . , arro · heels ,
especially high heels, however, are not allowed under any
circumstances
REFRESHMENTS
The AIS grants concessions for food and drink provision and snack- bar
outlets exist on the top promenade. Because of the concession
arrangements we will , again, not be able to pro ide free tea , coffee,
etc . Restaurant facilities are not available at the main venue and
we have ~t et to investigate the possibility of refectory style service
at the subsidiary venue . In any event , we will NOT be booking meals
with registrations .
CRECHE
Creche arrangements will be of similar standard to those of 1984 and
qualified staff will be engaged . Due 0 the limited space mo\
available at the AIS we may have to locate the creche at the second
hall. We may also have to impose limits on the number we can admi
to the creche ; so first booked, first looked after! We will also be
asking parents to bring their children's own bedding (eg sleeping
bags and pillows) with them .
LOGO AND THEME
We have chosen hot air ballooning as our theme because Canberra ' s
climate is particularly good for that activity at that time of year
and the sights are very worth seeing from the air . The local company
Balloon-Aloft will be offering discounted flights for Convention
dancers . They will also be tethering hot air balloons at the venue
as "guid posts" for -isitors to Canberra.
PARLIAMENT ROUSE EXTRA?
We feel that inter-State visitors, particularly, would get a big lift
out of being able to square dance in the Great Hall of the "new and
permanent" Parliament House (perhaps n ar with dancin on the great
Wall in China?) .
It was not feasible for us to build this into the s t andard Convention
programme but we have made "pencil bookings " for nights either side
of the ~ onvention . If dancers here feel that they would definitely
be attracted to such a dance as a special optional, additional price
extra then we will confirm ONE of those bookings . At his stage I
would expect the additiona cost to be of the order of $15 to $20 per
head in today's money .
Please, we need feedback on this. Wou d it be a sizzler or a fizzer?
FINALLY
Our motto i9 :-
and we intend to do our very best to ensure I not only that it is
held in the nation ' s capital city, but also that everyone has a real
great time!
Thank you for your attention

The National Heart Foundation (ACT Division) is proud to be associated with the
35th Australian National Square Dance Convention. Our association comes in the
form ot a sponsorship campaign, made possible through funds from the ACT
Health Promotion Fund. entitled "Be SmoKe Free".
The National Heart Foundation promotes the "Be Smoke Free" campaign In
conjunction with a number of sports, arts and cultural groups. The campaign
promotes the dangers of, and provides information about, smoking and passive
smoking. This campaign has eventuated because of the prevalence of smoking
and cardiovascular disease in our community. Cardiovascular disease is the
number one killer in Australia, and smoking is classified as (amongst other things)
the most important of he modifiable risk factors for heart disease. Passive
s-mol<i ng (breathing in othei peopie's smoke) has also been shown to increase the
risk of heart disease .
If you look around at the Convention venue, you wi ll most likely see banners and
displays promoting the "Be Smoke Free" message. Feel free to select any of the
information provided with the displays if it is of interest to your or your friends and
family - it is free of charge. You will also find competition entry boxes for the "Be
Smoke Free" quiz - don't miss 1aking the opportunity to enter. To be eligible to win
one of two Heart Foundation packs, place the completed entry form included with
the registration pack in on e of the boxes or post it to :
