MY FATHER – A MEMOIR

Most times, it is unfortunate that we fail to recognise when the best is
around us. It might even take years to wake up to the understanding that
we have had some precious people in our lives. My father was one such

lovely human being whom I missed to acknowledge. It is not that I
disrespected him when he was alive, but I failed to celebrate the subtle love

and care that was showered by him.
I was not aware of his academic accomplishments but always ran to him
for a rough draft and spelling check. He was a prolific reader who had an
awe-inspiring collection of books in English and Tamil, which eventually
made their way into my residence. Articles and editorial columns from ‘The
Hindu’ were marked and kept ready for me to go through as part of an

after school exercise. Long walks during holidays were enriched with
discussions on varied topics ranging from academics, culinary skills, music,

financial constraints, his childhood memories and the likes.
He was a simple man with modest earnings. Not much was saved for his
retired life, but he was rich by his understanding of life and the true essence

of it.
Tempers never flared and never did he raise his voice to reprimand.

Discipline was just a way of life followed with pride and with no
prompting. Being a spiritually inclined man, his morning Pooja kept me
busy. Cleaning the Pooja room and plucking the flowers from our garden

were favourite chores.

We were two daughters and we were raised with dignity and self respect.
My choices at different phases of life were respected. Teenage tantrums
were dealt with calm and composure. I am grateful that I have inherited a

lot of his ways unintentionally.
As I sit back I realise there was a lot that went unnoticed but they are

precious memories, still fresh that i can cherish in solitude.

On a Rainy day...

From the rain God,
I wish that the down pour,
Does not stop on its tod,
Making the zeal go sour.
Slackening of the Sun's heat,
Has made the minds sweet,
The breeze is sweet as honey,
That no rich can buy with money.
A dime, a dozen,
Makes the delight of the season,
But as it comes,
Starts off with beating drums.
Watching for hours together,
The black clouds thither,
And the sparks of lightning,
Makes the sky haunting.
Slowly the clouds move away,
Means that's it for the day,
Now that the sky has cleared,
The Sun has appeared.

Two line quotes;

1) Be someone's ice cream scoop, when you are about to fall their heart
must pound!
2) Rather than sitting and enjoying behind someone else's bike, riding your
own Royal Enfield is more fun!
3) My dear enemy,
I am like your wound; the harder you hit me the more I bother you. You
would hate me but would never stop worrying about me!
4) Be like a flower seed,
Even if they bury you deep under the soil
Perish,
And make them cherish.
5) On and on it goes,
This endless journey, as it keeps you on your toes. Tired but you must pull
through, for the walk of life meant for you.

THEN and NOW:

With the wake of the third millennium, raises the question, “What does the
future hold for mankind?". Now that people have started questioning their
future, they realize that, what was on top of the problem list for a thousand
years, has now been empowered with critical thinking over the years. For
thousands of years, war, plague and famine had remained the significant
reasons for the deaths of thousands; but that is not the story of the present
and will surely not be the story of the future. For the first time in history,
more people commit suicide than be killed in conflict. In the early twenty
first century, an average human is more like to die from bingeing at
McDonald's than from drought, Ebola or disease. Mankind is more at a
risk of obesity than starvation. On a clearer note, the problems of war,
famine and plague have not been completely wiped away from existence,
but they have been transformed from incomprehensible and uncontrollable
forces of nature to manageable ones. Mankind knows quite well what
needs to be done to prevent wars and famines. Now that we're bringing
them under control, what will replace them at the top of human agenda?
The generation of the twenty first century needs to ask itself this
unprecedented question and have to come up with a quick and smart
solution to ensure a healthy, prosperous and harmonious world.

SMILE, SMILE, SMILE

One day, when I was driving my cycle on the road to my school, I lately
realized it was a one-way traffic. In my confusion I suddenly tried to take a
U-turn and I came in contact with a car driven by an Army officer. I was
taken aback. However, in my usual way with a smile on my face I begged to
be excused. The Army official frowned at me initially, and after seeing my
helplessness with a smile on my face got down and helped me to lift the
cycle. Before driving away he waved his hands.
I realized that a blunder committed by me causing an accident was not only
ignored by an Army officer but a helping hand was extended only due to
the smile. A smile is the best way to get away from trouble even if it’s a
fake one.
Smile will bring beauty to your face and at the same time it will generate
energy in and around you. If you observe all successful people including
our Prime Minister Narendra Modi, they use this tool SMILE to leverage
to success.
A smiling heart is a healthy and happy heart which will win over any tough
criminal in our society. Our Father of the Nation Gandhiji is a fine
example. He won over children by his smiles.
Let us always meet and greet each other with a smile, for the smile is the
beginning of love. Life is like a mirror. Smile at it and it smiles back at you.
Even a new born will reflect upon your smile and bring cheers.
I have made abundant friends only through this magic. We have to make it
as a part and parcel of our personality so that even in utter chaos and
calamity, a smile will mitigate our troubles a lot. I also love those who
understand the troubles and smile.

You may not provide food for a hungry person but a smile at him will
relieve his hunger to a great extent. At the same time, if a hungry person is
given a feast without a smile, it may not reduce his hunger. If you’re not
using your smile, you’re like a person with a millions of rupees in the bank
without a cheque book.
All the statistics in this world cannot measure the warmth of a smile. Share
your smile with the world. It’s a symbol of friendship and peace. Your
smile will give you a positive countenance that will make people feel
comfortable around you. Nothing you wear is more important than your
smile. A Million dollar necklace is worth nothing in front of a warm smile.
I wake up every day with a smile on my face. Beauty is power; a smile is its
sword.

What’s life without friends?

A friend is a person who helps you to stand in your bad times and enjoys
with you in your good times. Friends are the greatest gift of our life. A
friendship gets stronger when the trust between them is unbreakable.
Friends are always by your side and they always try to keep you happy. A
friend is someone who makes you amazing.

We are several friends and in fact, several categories of friends. There are
those whom we meet frequently, those who we meet a few times in a year
and some of them whom we meet once in several years. Sometimes, the
intensity of our feelings for the last category may exceed that for the first
and the second ones. All this depends on how firm the foundation of a
friendship is.

There is no place for ego in friendship. During our difficult times, we can
always turn around and find our friends supporting us. Friends are
exceptionally special because, they love us like our parents, irritate us like
our siblings, fight with us like our rivals, care for us like our partners and
always stay beside us like our shadows. A person in this world cannot
survive without a friend.

The Secret Admirer

“Who is THAT guy? What the hell does he think?” flared Mr. Smith. “This
is the umpteenth time I am telling you Robert, I DON'T KNOW!” cried
out Mrs. Clara Smith. Things were working out wonderfully well between
the newlywed, loving couple until one fine day. One morning, when the
Smiths were having a pleasant breakfast, the local florist showed up with a
bouquet of sweet smelling flowers. The flowers were meant for Mrs. Smith.
“Robert? Is this your doing?” Clara asked suspiciously. “No. It isn’t me this
time, Clara. Why don’t you look up at the name signed in the card?” “It is
signed John Gilbert. Now who in the world is this John? I know nobody
called a Gilbert, do you?” “Neither do I know such a person. There is
nothing else written on the card, right? Then it must have been a mistaken
identity. Let’s forget about him.” Robert kissed his wife goodbye and left
for work. But, John Gilbert was not easily forgotten as the next day a heart-
shaped box filled with chocolates popped up in their letter box addressed
to Mrs. Smith. This was followed by a number of other gifts. All those
times, Mr. Smith had managed to maintain his temper but today, the cake
saying “I love you Clara” got on his nerves. “I am going to call the police”
he declared. “Robert! We don’t know who it is and maybe he mistook me
for someone else!” Clara tried to ease the situation. “Of course he hasn’t
mistaken you. He addresses you as Clara Smith and there isn’t another one
in the planet! Are you trying to protect this guy?” Before the shocked Clara
could answer, peals of laughter suddenly came from outside the window.
Confused, the Smiths opened the window to see Kate Smith, Robert’s 18
year old sister. “I knew the cake would do the trick!” Kate laughed. “Kate!
What are you doing here and what are you talking about?” Robert asked
sternly. “The cake! The one which Clara received, I sent that!” Kate said
with difficulty as she was unable to control her laughter. “Stop laughing
first and then EXPLAIN YOURSELF”, Robert cried out, exasperated. It
was then known that it was Kate who sent all those unanimous gifts under
the name of John Gilbert. “I just wanted to stir the pot because you two
were having a rather smooth life!”, grinned Kate.

My Dream World

It’s ten at night,
And I switched off the light.
I closed my eyes,
And saw the sunrise.

Oh! I had just slept,
For not even a moment, I bet!
But I realized that,
I had come into my dream world.

I was in a flying car,
I was in a place not so far,
From the world of pixies, fairies and gnomes,
And some giants and witches and big-ear trolls.

The gnomes said “Hi”,
The pixies were very shy,
The giants were enormous,
And the trolls looked ferocious.

The dwarves took me near the stream,
I sat there and saw a bright beam.
It was the fairies with colourful garlands,
Made of beautiful flowers, gracing their little hands.

We danced, we sang,
The big bell rang.
Shaken from my dreams, I opened my eyes,
It was my alarm clock ringing.

Now I am back to the world where I belong! -Rithvika Murali

A Great Place To Go!

Everyone knows that travelling is great, but there are only a few who know
that there are great places to travel. I love to travel around the world as I
have heard a lot about many places. On comparing the places I have gone
to (which are very few), I would say Singapore is the best. The place is so
nice. Greenery everywhere and the best part is, it rains a lot. I love rain.
When those droplets of water fall on your face….

Ok, let’s get into the topic. Why I think that Singapore is a great place is
because the people living there live in peace and harmony; they are kind
and have good manners and more than that they love their jobs! Wherever
you look, it is very clean and people obey traffic rules very strictly. If you
have visited this place, you will know why I am saying that this place is
great and if you have not yet visited this place, you will understand that
when you visit this place. As I said before (in the heading), this place is,

Just facts!

1) The word “hundred” comes from the Old Norse term, “hundrath”,
which actually means 120 and not 100.
2) “Forty” is the only number that is spelt with letters arranged in
alphabetical order
3) “One” is the only number that is spelt with letters arranged in
descending order.
4) From 0 to 1000, the only number that has the letter “a” in it is “one
thousand”.
5) After a million comes--- billion, trillion, quadrillion, quintillion,
sextillion, septillion, octillion, nonillion, decillion, and undecillion.
6) Number 9 is believed to be a magic number. It is because if you multiply
a number with 9, add all digits to resulting number, the sum would always
come out to be 9.
7) Select at random 23 people and put them in a room. There is roughly a
50% chance that 2 people in that room will share the same birthday.
8) Ancient Babylonians did math in base 60 and not base 10, giving us 60
seconds in a minute, 360 degrees in a circle, etc.
9)2 and 5 are the only primes that end in 2 or 5.
10) Among all shapes with the same perimeter a circle has the largest area.

Child abuse

I am confined to four walls,
Not knowing what to do now.
Should I give out a loud call
Or should I take another blow?
When at night I have some dreams,
Which turn out to be bad nightmares.
This wrath that makes me only scream,
Have I sinned to not get care?

All the children go to malls,
While I am here to endow
My father who drinks alcohol,
With booze that never raises brows.
My fear is flowing like a stream
With a reason to be scared.
Why'd I have to be redeemed?
Have I sinned to not get care?

Then there is the one long haul
To escape this place that's unhallow.
But time is ready to maul
On my abiding heart that's hollow.
And then there's the hope that gleamed,
The lack of which had me in tears.
Then I thought, "It doesn't seem
That I have sinned to not get care".

My mind with imagination it teemed,
To make it work I recited prayers.
But there he came with intention to ream,
For perhaps I've sinned to not get care.

The Happiest Days of your Life

School days should be a happy time in a young person’s life. What can
make people’s life a misery during this time then? In my opinion, there is
one word which answers this question – bullying.

Unfortunately, bullying is quite common in schools where I live. It can
affect students of any age, and both boys and girls. A friend of mine had a
very negative experience at school last year as an older boy continually
called him names and sometimes used to post nasty messages about him
on Facebook. Obviously, my friend felt very upset about this and it
affected his self-confidence. Some days, he didn’t want to come to school
at all.

What can people do to stop this problem? Personally, I think teachers need
to be aware that bullying may be happening in their classes and be very
strict when they have a case of bullying. Another thing teachers could do is
prepare lessons to talk about the problem with their pupils, which might
make bullies realize how badly they hurt their victims. As for students, if
they find out that a classmate is being bullied, they should support them as
much as possible and let a teacher know.

Bullying can be a nightmare, but there are things we can do to prevent it.
Hopefully, one day all students will be able to go to school without fear of
being bullied.

TREES

I am a seed, to be a tree,
'nd I want to be truly free;
I want to live forever and ever,
please don't cut me, please never.
I may give you fruits all day,
Please don't let me fade away;
I want to live forever and ever,
Please pity me, don't be too clever
I could result in rain next day,
Please let me sway today;
I'd like to serve you forever and ever,
Please don't let me down, never.
I recycle your wastes all day,
'cause you do the same everyday;
Please retain this kinship ever,
please let it sustain forever.

Confusion & Pain

A heavy chest, a heavy heart, the world becomes black and dark. Thoughts
clutter the brain, leaving no rationality behind there. The corner of the
room is the most favourite place. And then negativity settles like sand in
water and it never ceases to exist thereafter. It is like there is no light in the
world and there is nothing but pain. Blood drains out of the body and life
as it was known is nonexistent, nobody cares, nobody wants to care or so it
is thought. By this time, starts the pain. You see, the heart is too good a
place to store the emotions of humankind. Sometimes, it just can’t take this
anymore. A sob erupts from god knows where and grows into shrieks and
cries of agony. The worst of it all is the rationale behind the cause, as that
realization would have failed to hit us until the drama is over. After the end
of course, reasoning would not matter. Though if you look at it carefully,
there wouldn’t have been a reason in the first place. It would have just
happened. It’s like having your soul ripped apart into a million pieces for
no reason at all, nada. Oh guys, this is just the start. Then, comes the mood
swings. The occasional pangs of anger, sorrow, joy, irritation, sensitivity,
disgust, and disinterest in life resulting in drastic transitions in the way life
is led.

All of a sudden, everything falls apart.

Not everything though.

There is still that flicker of hope, that little thing which supports you, holds
you back from taking the wrong turn and makes your life worth everything
and gives it meaning. Find that one thing in your life that makes you want
to wake up and go on, no matter how hard it gets.

Never did I know why the tears fell,
Cascading down my face.
I wanted to bury myself in a shell,
Wanted to get out of this maze.

I knew I wasn't experiencing hell,
This 'sadness' is just a phase.

What's happening to me, I thought.
Why this sudden sorrow?
With my inner demons, I fought,
with help none to borrow.

It wasn't until eventually that my pain faded away,
I had no reason for my cry,
It numbed down day by day.

The experience had taken a toll,
A good one at that, I shall commend.
The push gave me one for life,
And it was me that I had to amend.

I was hence strong, stronger
With a life lesson in hand,
With nothing to hold me back,
Why won't I give life my all?

Melancholy

No ears for my thoughts,
No eyes for my tears,
No heart for my pain,
And no hugs for my fears.
Feelings are in shackles,
My words are very hollow.
Pain is flowing like a stream
In a sea of sorrow.
My mind is like a ship,
Sailing amidst a storm.
A storm I face every day,
It's now become a norm.
All directions on my compass,
Don't know where I have to go.
Do I wander 'bout the sea or
Do I face the winds that blow?
I do try to see the sun
But clouds are messing up the light,
As I try to steer away from
All my problems and my plight.
And I don't know what to do,
Jump into the sea and die
Or should I wait and see the light
Blind my now teary eyes?

Should I really have to wait for
help to refine my heart that's gold?
Cause pain isn’t a telephone call
For me to put it on hold.

I took the scope and looked ahead
to see another ship approach.
But to my amusement 'twas a
Ship that harboured great reproach.
'Member how I told you 'bout my
Mind resembling a ship?
Well I saw an anchor of torment
To have on me a grip.

A grip so tight and suffocating,
nearly choking me to death.
Worse than water, or a storm,
or a splinter or some meth.
At that point I didn't know 'bout
The anchor's weight of ego.
I held on to the anchor as the
Weight destroyed me like Lego.
Then that anchor went deep in me
Breaking all the bones apart.
Finally the ship had sunk but
Deep into my lifeless heart.

Me!

If I were you,
I would’ve played ball.
If I were you,
I could’ve walked around in shorts.
If I were you,
I needn’t have long hair,
Or wear a bindi, or earrings or bangles or...who cares?
Hanging out with friends at night,
playing drums and guitar in style.
It seems like a free world that you live in,
Away from the restrictions that bind us in a prison.
No matching sandals, no dupatta, no gown,
Just a shirt, a pant and a pair of sneakers and you are good to go.
You're lucky, dude! You are gifted.
And you get all what you want.
Oh! We live in two different worlds,
And you always get the better part.
Annoyed and irritated, I feel very upset.
What else can I do, I regret.

Absentmindedly, I pick up a bottle from the shelf
And I start painting my nails.
The colour did ease out my pain.
I pick the kohl and draw a line on my eyes.
It felt very soothing and it made me calm.

A smile widens on my face as I realised,
This is real and this is what I am
I am a girl and I’ll always be one.
But why did I always yearn to be you? That someone?
So, I put on my tracks and grabbed a ball,
And dribbled around, singing my song.
It was fun and energetic.
Hey, it’s not that boys can only play ball.
Maybe our worlds aren’t that far apart.
It’s just a thought.
Let’s break this down,
And erase the line that is tearing us apart.
I'll be me and you’ll be you
Let's smash the identity crisis between the two
And tell this society that we aren’t from Venus and Mars

The Education System and Maturity Levels

I feel that the education system isn't doing justice with regards to refining
the maturity and acceptance level of a child. While I myself am immature at
times (given the fact that I'm NOT an adult), I do have the tendency to
accept different communities and ideas. Listening to them is a huge part of
acceptance.
We are taught the most generic of things and not things that actually
broaden the knowledge of a child. For example, things about relationship,
abuse, mental disorders, STDs, sexual awareness, orientations, etc. But
instead of all these things that the education system considers trivial, we are
given mundane assignments pertaining to the most common subjects ever.
And I'm not criticizing the education system of India alone. The education
system around the world is incompetent to say the very least. But India
education system is the one that stands out of the crowd. It might seem as
though I'm always ranting about the education system, but the truth is, we
need to urge every single person to oppose the current system.
In my opinion, the CCE pattern of education, while certainly flawed, did a
much better job than NCERT in terms of making the process of learning
FUN. We never got tired of assignments because we expanded our
knowledge of the subject while doing the assignments. Project days were
the best, and to remove them to "focus more on education" is simply a
moronic move.
If this isn't education, tell me then, what is your definition of "education"?
because I wasn't taught about it.

Oneself

“In such an opinionated world we live in, the best thing to do is to smile to
a person who expects it & cry with a person who expects that”. This is the
best advice that can be given to a person who wishes to live a problem free
life.
But when does the problem actually arise? It is when we decide to be
ourselves, when we want to live our lives in our way, and when we make
choices that prove that others opinions do not define us.
Just an honest opinion, hardly a few people will appreciate a person’s
character entirely. But yeah “your vibe attracts your tribe’! All of us, will
surely get at least one person in our life who likes us for who we actually
are and does not expect us to change.
By this we must not conclude that everybody is perfect and need not
change at all. Small lifestyle changes in order to maintain a peaceful living is
fine. But in the process we must always remember, to not lose our
character & individuality.
The best thing to do to keep the spirit in us always shining is to smile.
People who smile for everything are called MAD in this modern world, but
I would call them smart. Some of us may vary with opinions & say laughing
for small things is silly, but at the end of the day these small laughter’s are
going to keep they away from all kind of stress. To add a feather to their
caps I would appreciate people who follow the Mantra “A day without
laughter is a day wasted”.
Hence let’s smile, lets love, lets live – Not for anyone else but for
ourselves.

Learn To Say “No”!

“Not doing something is always faster than doing it.”
This can be applied to so many aspects of life, but of course, this cannot be
applicable to each and every decision that we make, like important things
that might highly affect our life in a negative or a positive way.
Most importantly, everyone should learn to make a decision for
themselves. Sympathy is a really powerful emotion that can influence the
way one acts, but as this is a powerful emotion, it should not be used for
petty matters that can deprive someone of their time.
A classic example is when we are doing a potentially beneficial work and
someone asks us to buy them something petty, like a bar of chocolate. If
we sympathize with them and use our time to buy them the chocolate, we
are losing our precious time for a petty thing instead of the important work
we were doing, which is a loss for us.
Instead, we could just say “No”. This can be more beneficial to both, as
our important work is done faster and the other person buys their own
chocolate, and gets a workout for their legs.
Now let us consider a scenario where saying “No” doesn’t really end well.
Imagine our employer offering us a big raise in our salary if we could
substitute his broken-down vehicle and give him a ride home, but his
house is twice as far away from our workplace, as our own house. If we
feel lazy or tired and say “No”, then we are missing out on extra money,
whereas if we show sympathy and help him reach home, we are getting
benefitted since we’re getting a raise.
Therefore, from these two examples, we can infer that saying “No” is really
beneficial, but not in all cases.
It is now up to you, my dear reader, to use this magic word wisely!

SHOWER THOUGHTS:

1. Is expired poison more toxic or less toxic?
2. Which letter is silent in the word “SCENT”? Is it “c” or “s”?
3. Why is something sent by car called a “shipment”, and one sent
by ship called “cargo”?
4. In the 1900’s everyone could own horses, but only the rich
owned cars.
But now everyone own cars, but the rich are the only ones to own
horses.
5. By replacing “W” with “T”, we get the answers for what, when
and where.
6. If you rip a hole in a net, there is a lesser number of holes than
before.
7. If a spoon were to be made of gold, would it still be called
silverware?
8. We are always working hard to become lazy.
9. Since humans are 60-70% water, does drinking water make us

Ekalavya

This, the story of Ekalavya the Archer
Mighty with the bow and arrow
His glorious skills, his fair with thrills
A tale of sadness and sorrow

With his craft so fierce, his arrows
Would pierce
The sky, the seas and the ground
But alas, the mighty bowman Ekalavya
By Drona's obeisance was bound

Undefeated, unbeaten, unmatched on Earth
By any men or creatures
Yet never received the love he deserved
From Drona, the greatest of teachers

In absence of a teacher, in search of guidance
An image from wood he carved
For praises, for laurels, appreciation, recognition
From his distant idol he starved

Yet when he came face to face with his God
Who knew his fate would turn?
For Drona blinded by love for another
Would ask a thumb in return

Ekalavya the Archer, Brave and valorous
Would give no petty excuse
For his God had asked him payment
in person
How could he have refused?

And thus the student, chopped off his thumb
Up to the occasion he rose
This, the story of Ekalavya the Archer
The greatest unsung of the heroes

Dengue

Dengue infection is a leading cause of death and sickness in
tropical and subtropical parts of the world, which includes India,
Tamil Nadu, and Chennai. So, awareness and precautions of this
virus is very essential to all students, parents, and everyone living

in this city.

Symptoms of this vector borne disease include:

Primary symptoms of dengue appear three to 15 days after the
mosquito bite and include high fever and severe headache, with
severe pain behind the eyes that is apparent when trying to move
the eyes. Other associated symptoms are joint pain, muscle and
bone pain, rash, and mild bleeding. Many affected people complain
of low back pain. The lymph nodes of the neck and groin may be
swollen. Young children and people infected for the first time
typically have milder symptoms than older children and adults.

Transmission:

The dengue virus infection spreads via the bite of a striped Aedes
aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquito that has previously bitten
an infected person. The mosquito flourishes during rainy seasons,
which is currently prevailing over Chennai, but can breed in water-

filled flowerpots, plastic bags, and cans year-round.
