4 Cardmaking, Stamping Large background or ‘screen’ dies will make great additions to your collection – and they can be used for all sorts of techniques. Here’s four great examples – each one gives a different effect to the next … DESIGNED BY THERESE CALVIRD SPECIAL FEATURE
& Papercrafts 5 Die: My Favorite Things Die-namics triangle screen Stamps: My Favorite Things MPD Winged Beauties (set of 13) Card: Scrapbook Boutique butter, grapefruit, smooth black, smooth white Acetate Ink pads: Memento tuxedo black; VersaMark; Hero Arts fresh peach, butter bar, soft apricot, pale tomato; ColorBox frost white Embossing powder: white Texture paste Colouring tools: Copic markers Spray inks: Studio Calico calico white; October Afternoon Sprinklers Midway pink balloon Sequins: Pretty Pink Posh lemon meringue, pink blush, sweetheart mix, sparkling clear Tools: die-cutting machine, tan mat, heat tool, craft knife, palette knife Adhesives: double-sided tape, mounting tape, liquid glue, dotted tape runner MATERIALS FOR ALL CARDS
6 Cardmaking, Stamping Stamp a cardstock panel then die-cut it and use the negative sections to create this striking, modern effect. METHOD Stamp the largest Winged Beauties butterfl y three times across white card 90mm x 95mm in tuxedo black ink and colour them with markers. Place the panel stamped side face down on the cutting blades of the triangle screen die, using low tack tape to die-cutting machine. Without removing any pieces from the die, use a dotted tape runner to apply adhesive across the back of the panel, focusing on the triangles. Hold this over folded white card 210mm x 110mm and press down on the removing the border at the same time. Selectively mask and stamp the ‘with love’ sentiment in one line on black card using VersaMark ink then white-emboss it. Cut it out and affi x it in the lower right-hand corner with mounting tape. Cut this die out of scrap card or acetate and use it as stencil with your favourite inks or mediums! METHOD Die-cut the triangle screen out of scrap card or acetate, push out all of the triangles to create a stencil and lay it on the top left-hand side of white card 150mm x 105mm. Mix some texture paste with pink balloon spray ink to achieve the desired colour then spread a thin layer over the template using a palette knife and set this aside to dry. Splatter drops of pink balloon and calico white spray over the dry paste. Stamp Winged Beauties ‘dreams’ sentiment in the bottom right-hand corner with tuxedo black ink then layer it on folded white card 300mm x 105mm. Stamp the largest Winged Beauties butterfl y on white card, colour it with markers and fussy-cut it out leaving a small border. Secure this in place using liquid glue for the body and mounting tape behind the top wings to give them dimension. Scatter assorted sequins with glue to fi nish. H O W T O This ‘with love’ stamp runs over two lines, but by inking one word at a time (or masking the unwanted word as you go), it can be made to run on one line. TIP You don’t have to use cardstock the same size as your die – simply trim a smaller panel, position it with low-tack tape then die-cut it. TIP For a more durable cardstock stencil, glue two screens together. ugh a ly time-saver Speed up the drying process with a heat tool.
& Papercrafts 7 mounting tape behind. METHOD Attach butter card 132mm x 100mm to folded white card 264mm x 100mm with double-sided tape then splatter it with pink balloon and calico white spray inks and set it aside to dry. Die-cut the triangle screen out of white card, remove the triangles and affi the same size. Secure thin strips of mounting tape around the edge of the whole acetate panel so there are no gaps. Stamp two Winged Beauties solid butterfl ies on white card – one in butter bar ink and the other fresh peach – and fussy-cut them out leaving thin borders. Attach the fresh peach butterfl y directly to the card base and pile a variety of sequins loosely on top. Position the acetate panel over the top of this, ensuring the mounting tape is well bonded, then add the other butterfl y to the upper left-hand side of the card using mounting tape for the wings and liquid glue for the body. Stamp Winged Beauties ‘hello’ on grapefruit card with VersaMark ink, white-emboss it then trim it in a banner and tuck it under the right-hand side of the butterfl y. Try using your dies as stamps – simply ink them up, place the cardboard on top with a steady hand, then run it through your machine with a tan mat. METHOD Tap frost white ink over the cutting blades of the triangle screen die, place grapefruit card 140mm x 105mm on top then run this through your die-cutting machine using a tan mat and set it aside to dry. Stamp three Winged Beauties on white card – once each with pale tomato, butter bar and fresh peach inks – then fussy-cut them out leaving thin borders. Affi x the dry grapefruit panel to folded white card 280mm x 105mm with double-sided tape. Attach the butterfl ies vertically, using liquid glue for the bodies and mounting tape under the wings, leaving a gap for the sentiment as shown. Stamp Winged Beauties ‘thinking of you’ sentiment on butter card 10mm x 100mm with tuxedo black ink then trim the ends at angles. Score it vertically 15mm and 20mm in from each side, fold along these lines to make a three-dimensional banner then secure it between the butterfl ies using mounting tape for the middle and liquid glue for the sides. Scatter some sequins with liquid glue to fi nish. TIP Experiment with your embossing layers and refer to the manufacturers’ instructions for this technique – you only need enough pressure for the ink to transfer to the cardstock. TIP If you don’t have thin mounting tape to create the shaker border, cut thin strips of foam sheet and attach them with double-sided tape or glue. anels. he ate

Design idea TIP When creating fl oral clusters, use two or three sizes to help balance the look. Use the banner strip as a divider between the top and bottom of the card.
12 Cardmaking, Stamping 2VJDL$BSET These cards are a snap to make and pack plenty of visual punch thanks to pre-printed gold foil cards and die-cuts. TIP MATERIALS FOR ALL CARDS Card: Close to My Heart 5½in x 4in white card and envelope value pack Printed cards and die-cuts: P roject Life Heidi Swapp Foil Kit Trim: Celebrate It gold wire edge metallic yarn Punch: corner rounder Adhesives: mounting tape, double-sided tape
& Papercrafts 13 Look out for Project Life kits like this one – they give you ample journal cards and die-cuts for a very reasonable price. Costsaver What we like Pretty pastels and dashes of fuchsia are perfectly accented with fl ashes of gold. DESIGNED BY ALICIA MCNAMARA GENERAL METHOD Fold the pre-scored cards in half and round all the corners with the punch. Spread out all the Foil Kit cards and choose two or three different sized ones to layer together on each base card – ensuring each set includes one with a sentiment. Play around with the combinations, trimming cards to various sizes as desired and punching any new corners with the corner rounder; in these samples, some 4in x 6in cards with sentiments were cut down to 3in x 4in or smaller. When you’re happy, secure all the layers together with double-sided tape – but don’t secure them to the base cards yet. Wrap gold metallic yarn once or twice around the layers and tie bows on one side. Affi x all the panels to the card fronts with mounting tape. Scatter Foil Kit star, dot, heart and arrow die-cuts on the cards, referring to the photograph for placement and using mounting tape on some of the larger ones to create a focal point.

Simply cut your patterned papers as described below, and arrange them on cardstock with a few chipboard shapes! DESIGNED BY JANET O’BRIEN GENERAL METHOD Cut eight 80mm squares out of the listed patterned papers. Flip them over, mark 10mm in from each edge with a pencil then lightly draw a border.
