To All the readers of Aadvika,

Welcome to the Aadvika 2020. According to the Indian linguistic repositories, the meaning of
Aadvika is unique, and this 2020 edition of Aadvika is definitely one of a kind - its contents, the
circumstances it is published in, the team efforts for the publication, and definitely all of you -
the readers.

San Antonio Bengali Cultural Community (SABCC) has been publishing its annual souvenir maga-
zine named Aadvika since its inaugural year 2017 during celebrating Durga Puja - an annual aus-
picious occasion of all Bengalis around the world. At the beginning of the year 2020, SABCC has
made several mandates to showcase another spectacular Durga Puja among the Bengali-
speaking communities in and around San Antonio. However, within three months in the year,
Coronavirus (COVID-19) has taken over the control of everyone’s usual lifestyles and posed all of
us with unique threats as well as opportunities. It has forced us to cover our hearty smile under a
mask, our gesture to embrace people from zero distance to social distance while adopting digital
presence in the place of physical presence. In the last several months SABCC has showcased sev-
eral cultural performances like Poila Baisakh, Rabindra Nazrul Jayanti, 74th Indian Independence
Day, and kids corners including Art day, Mother’s day, Father's day among its members using
digital platforms. Likewise, SABCC has also gracefully undertaken a tremendous challenge to
bring the spirit, fun, and joy, of this year's Durga Puja within its members and its wider fraternity
through unique methods using different digital platforms. In addition to propagating Bengali thus
Indian culture in the San Antonio area, SABCC has undertaken efforts as part of its mission to
support people affected by COVID-19 in the USA as well as Amphan in India during this year.

Aadvika, as per usual, has continued holding its pride in publishing unique presentations of Ben-
gali arts and culture created by the enthusiast team of SABCC. Hope it will find as a trove of
treasure in the digital library of its readers.

Finally, on behalf of everyone associated with SABCC, I would like to thank Mr. Ron Nirenberg,
the mayor of the City of San Antonio for wishing SABCC on the eve of Durga Puja. I also personal-
ly recognize the continuous supports and encouragement extended by our sponsors and adver-
tisers especially in the current year to operate the organization and observe Durga Puja in such a
unique environment. I also would like to take this opportunity to recognize all board members,
committee members, and participants for contributing their volunteer time, skills, and experienc-
es in the operation and development of SABCC; and I personally thank each of you. I feel privi-
leged to lead the SABCC as President for this unique year of 2020 and promise for continuous
efforts to work towards achieving the missions and visions of SABCC during the rest of the year
and years to come.

Wishing you all Happy Durga Puja, and I hope maa Aadvika will help all of us overcome the
unique crisis posed by COVID-19. Stay safe and healthy. Enjoy!

Friends, we need not analyze decades, centuries, or millennia of human history to under-
stand survival of the fittest or the adaptive capability of humanity which makes our species
the most dominant. The year 2020 reverberates with such evidence of results favoring one
who has adapted to the challenge by adopting new ways, be it at the level of an individual
human being or a large-scale organization and their endeavors. Currently, the human mind
can only speculate the duration of this transformation journey and what might be the end
result based on past experiences. We can only witness the process of the change and be a
part of it in our own way.

One can make an observation that being open to change, relying on basic wisdom and human
instinct has been proven as powerful tools to survive through the period of transformation,
with science providing us with justification. Whenever the paradigm shifts, it sometimes re-
quires us to take a pause and go back to the basics to reevaluate before taking action. I feel
that this episode in human history has also brought up mind over matter and mental above
physical discussion out of just the philosophical realm into every aspect of our life. We are
forced to think more, be creative, and be innovative before just doing it physically and then
retrospect on ways to improve.

Members of the San Antonio Bengali Cultural Community (SABCC) have adapted to these
challenges and adopted innovative approaches such as digital interface for sharing
knowledge of experts within our community, continuous engagement and communication; all
of these efforts in some ways, has helped us all retain the sense of belonging to our commu-
nity and to cope up in both psychological and physical levels. Finding innovative ways to con-
tinue our traditions and customs has led to additional positive outcomes like expansion of
technical know-how within the community and inclusion of the younger generation to create
and publish digital media and the development of an online platform for SABCC, which has
the potential to expand influence and reach of the organization. One can also say that new
endeavors like the Bangla School is digital from the get-go in a true 21st century spirit. Our
members have shown the audacity and tenacity to dream, plan and execute the annual event
most dear to our heart and culture, Durga Puja.

I wish you all a Happy Durga Puja. May Maa Durga bless us all to be able to take the spark
ignited by our circumstances, collectively towards growing our beloved organization - Jai
Maa.

This is Usha Sri Avula, President of IASA, would like to Congratulate
San Antonio Bengali Community (SABCC) on behave on myself & our
entire EC team, for organizing the Durga puja and keeping up with the
tradition as every year. May the Goddesses bless us all and give us the

a great message into the community about the peace and harmony to

line “Nevermore” can be seen in the form of text, the man’s bookshelf and fireplace with burn-

ing embers can also be seen. This artwork was created on my computer with an art program

called Krita, where I used my mouse and different brushes, colors, and patterns to create effects
