Instead, she founded the Sisters of the Holy Family in New Orleans, and these women attended to the needs of slaves and poor free blacks. As she prayed, “I believe in God; I hope in God; I love. I want to live and die for God.”
• Servant of God Mother Mary Elizabeth Lange (ca. 1794-1882), another former slave, founded and served as the first superior general of the Oblate Sisters of Providence in Baltimore. She founded the order so that black women would have a means by which to enter religious life. Its other purpose was to educate African-American children.
• Servant of God Father Augustus Tolton (1854-1897) was America’s first black priest. He had to travel to Rome to conduct his priestly training because no U.S. seminary would take him. Back home, his ministry at his church in Quincy, Illinois, was so successful that he drew congregants from the nearby white parish. He later moved to Chicago, where he founded St. Monica’s, the city’s first black parish. • Servant of God Julia Greeley, Denver’s Angel of Charity, was born into slavery, at Hannibal, Missouri, sometime between 1833 and 1848. While she was still a young child, a cruel slavemaster, in the course of beating her mother, caught Julia’s right eye with his
whip and destroyed it. Freed by Missouri’s Emancipation Act in 1865, Julia subsequently earned her keep by serving white families in Missouri, Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico—though mostly in the Denver area. Whatever she did not need for herself, Julia spent assisting poor families in her neighborhood. Julia entered the Catholic Church at Sacred Heart Parish in Denver in 1880, and was an outstanding supporter of all that the parish had to offer. She joined the Secular Franciscan Order in 1901 and was active in it till her death in 1918.

Speakers: 3 Xavier Doctors
L-R: Pierre Johnson, M.D., Maxime Madhere, M.D.,Joseph W. Semien Jr., M.D. Standing: Investigative journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones. Three Xavierite graduates Dr. Pierre Johnson, Dr. Maxime Madhere and Dr. Joseph Semien debued their new book, “The Pulse of Perseverance.” with a Q&A forum, book signing event at Xavier University of Louisiana.
Award-winning New York Times investigative journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones moderated the discussion about the book, which detailed the three men’s struggles to overcome the obstacles of poverty, inadequate K-12 educations and family dysfunction as they
pursued their dreams of becoming doctors.
The forum also highlighted the role that Xavier, which sends more black undergraduates on to become doctors than any other college in the country, played in their success.
“Xavier University itself was my saving grace. It would’ve been very easy for me to slip through the cracks during the academic valleys of my freshman year, but Xavier actively worked to identify and support students like me,” said Dr. Johnson.
Rising from backgrounds marked by violence, drug use and personal struggle, Doctors Pierre Johnson, Maxime Madhere and Joseph Semien showed that their challenges were stepping stones rather than roadblocks. At Xavier, these three black premedical students
struggled with the demands of Xavier’s rigorous curriculum, but formed a bond that allowed them to succeed, despite the challenges and setbacks each faced. “Pulse of Perseverance” relates a story familiar to many urban youth, and provides a roadmap for how they can overcome. “Fear of failure haunts us all, but it’s not failure itself that counts, it’s how we respond to failure that makes the difference,” Dr. Semien said. “No one’s journey in life is perfect; my own life is a testament to that.”
By sharing their personal struggles and ultimate triumphs, the authors aim to empower and inspire black youth to work towards their goals.
Speaker: Lisa P. Jackson, Apple vice president
Xavier University hosted “A Conversation with Apple VP Lisa Jackson.” Jackson, reports directly to Apple CEO Tim Cook, oversees the company’s efforts to minimize its impact on the environment by addressing climate change through renewable energy and energy efficiency, using greener materials, and inventing new ways to conserve precious resources. She is also responsible for Apple’s education policy programs such as ConnectED, its product accessibility work, and its worldwide government affairs function.
Apple Inc. is an American multinational technology company headquartered in Cupertino, Cal., which designs, develops, and sells consumer electronics, computer software, and online services. Prior to joining Apple, Jackson served as Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency from 2009-2013. Appointed by President Barack Obama, she focused on reducing greenhouse gases, protecting air and water quality, preventing exposure to toxic contamination, and expanding outreach to communities on environmental issues.
