Xavierite 2002 2005
OUR HISTORY
St. Katharine Drexel of Philadelphia and her Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, a religious community dedicated to the education of African Americans and Native Americans, established Xavier as a high school in 1915. The four-year college program was added in 1925.
Today Xavier retains its distinction as the only historically Black, Catholic University in the Western Hemisphere.
OUR MISSION Xavier University of Louisiana is Catholic and historically Black. The ultimate purpose of the University is the promotion of a more just and humane society. To this end, Xavier prepares its students to assume roles of leadership and service in society. This preparation takes place
in a pluralistic teaching and learning environment that incorporates all relevant educational means, including research and community service.
OUR CHALLENGE Xavier continues to rank first nationally in the number of African American students earning undergraduate degrees in both the biological/life sciences and the physical sciences.
The College of Pharmacy, one of only two pharmacy schools in Louisiana, is among the nation’s top three producers of African American Doctor of Pharmacy degree recipients.
Xavier ranks first in the nation in placing African American students into medical schools, where it has been ranked for
the past 14 years.
Annually, more than 40 percent
of Xavier graduates continue their education by attending graduate or professional school.

Saint Ka arine D xel
Xavier is like no other. We have our historical distinctions: Xavier is America’s only historically Black, Catholic University as well as the only college founded by a Saint (Katharine Drexel). But Xavier is so much more than that. At our core, we are a liberal arts-based college dedicated to preparing students to assume roles of leadership and service in society. Our achievements in the sciences and in pharmacy have earned a number of impressive national rankings that belie our relatively small enrollment.
Located in New Orleans, the small liberal arts college dates back to 1915, when Saint Katharine Drexel and the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament founded the coeducational secondary school from which it evolved. Saint Katharine, supported by the interest of a substantial inheritance from her father, banker- nancier Francis Drexel, founded and staffed many institutions throughout the U.S. in an effort to help educate Native Americans and Blacks. She was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2000.
Seal of Xavier University
Description: A shield inscribed in a circle. On one side of the shield is a lion rampant in a eld of white, or in the language of heraldry, on a eld of silver. His claws are tinged with gold. On the other side of the shield, on a green eld, is a crescent and above the crescent, a golden head of wheat. Woven in and around the shield we see a ribbon with the motto of Xavier University, “DEO ADJUVANTE NON TIMENDUM.”
Symbolism: The gold and the white, or silver, are Xavier’s colors. The green eld signi es con dence in God; the lion, symbol of courage and strength, represents the Xavier student, nourished with the wheat, which is the symbol of the Blessed Sacrament; the wheat may also stand for the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament who founded Xavier University. The claws and the tongue of the lion are gold to indicate that the source of the Xavierite’s strength is the Blessed Sacrament (the golden wheat). The crescent symbolizes Mary, the Virgin Mother of God from whom the Second Divine Person, the Blessed Wheat, arose; it also represents the city of New Orleans commonly referred to as the “Crescent City.”
Motto: “DEO ADJUVANTE, NON TIMENDUM.” A free translation of the Latin may be rendered as,
“WITH GOD AS OUR HELPER, ONE MUST NOT FEAR.” Or again, “IF GOD BE WITH US, NOTHING IS TO BE FEARED.”

Siste the Ble ed Sacrament
The
In 1891, Katharine founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament and became Mother Katharine. She believed in “hands on” leadership and so traveled extensively as her congregation and its works grew. She continued on as leader of the congregation until she was almost 80. After that, Mother Katharine’s weak heart nally allowed her to lead a more contemplative life until her death in her 97th year.
God blessed the congregation and its work. There were more than 500 Sisters by the early 1960’s. For over 100 years, the congregation has been distinguished by its delity to its founding purpose, the ef cacy of its mission, and its profound spirituality. The greatest joy of the Sisters is the abundant af rmation from the people for whom the congregation was dedicated. Today, like all congregations, the SBS are challenged by the decline in vocations and the increasing costs of care for the elders. They are now under 200 members. Remembrance of Mother Katharine’s small early congregation of 13 members and her emphasis on reliance on God’s providence ll them with peace and hope.

The Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, founded in 1891 by St. Katharine Drexel, is a congregation dedicated to the interracial apostolate in the USA and Haiti.
Today SBS serve in elementary and secondary schools as well as at Xavier University of Louisi- ana in New Orleans. They are also involved in a variety of other services including pastoral and spiritual ministries, social services, counseling, religious education and health care, primarily but not exclusively among Black and Native American peoples.
Left to Right: Sr. Nathalee Bryant, Sr. Mary Ann Stachow, Sr. Faith Okerson and Sr. Nicholas Cooke
The Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament believe God calls them to be a sign in the world of the power of the Eucharistic Christ to effect unity and community among all peoples.
Guided by the spirit of Katharine Drexel, they are called to share
the Gospel message with the poor, especially among the Black and Native American peoples and challenge the deeply rooted injustice in the world today.

1918-2004
“The thought of God as a source of all beauty, design and order in the universe has always had special meaning for me.” —Quote of Sr. Lurana Neely
Born Emily Neely in Kansas City, Missouri, the older of two children -moved to Yeadon, Pennsylvania, and attended West Catholic High School in Philadelphia. Emily became familiar with the S.B.S. Community when she read a 1932 “Mission Fields at Home” and then through Sr. Francis Xavier and Sr. Anacletus, who came to the school and addressed the students on the life and works of the S.B.S.
At her reception into the community, Emily took the name of Sr. Lurana because of its meaningful signi cance to her. “Lurana” comes from two Greek roots meaning, “Washing in the Blood” or “Atonement.” And, she took her feast-day, July 9th, Our Lady of Atonement. Her motto parallels her name - Jesus Eucharist - My Love and My way.
When we speak of Sister Lurana, what immediately comes to mind is beauty..., in her personality and in her works. God blessed her with the talents and gifts of music and art, special avenues to beauty. Entering the chapel here at St. Michael we see the fruits of her gifts, the cruci x, Our Lady and St. Joseph. The listing of her many artistic works are too numerous to read. It is noted that her greatest contribution in her service to the church and the community was to Xavier University and to the students.
Besides the gifts and talent in music and art, we note also her teaching experiences at Holy Providence, Xavier Prep, St. Francis de Sales, Rock Castle, and Xavier University. In 1980 to 1990, she served as a Pastoral Associate in St. Rita Parish, New Orleans and the community of Gert Town.
In response to the following question made to her at an institute on sacred art, “How has your role as a woman religious affected your artistry, and how has your artistry affected the people of God?” Sister Lurana replied, “All gifts and desires came together when I became a Sister of the Blessed Sacrament.” “As such, it has been my job and privilege to use whatever talents and energies given to me to serve God in those who have been oppressed and denied social justice, and particularly, in my teaching to assist my students in discovering and developing in themselves, similar gifts.”
Motto on the side of the paper: “If we live the Gospel, we will be people of justice and our lives will bring the good news to the poor.” –Saint Katharine Drexel

Anna lle Bernard Mercker leaves these words in her memory: To follow God’s divine instructions we must keep our eyes focused to observe wonderful things and individuals with love
in their hearts. Sister Mary Elise was a disciplined nun with much
love in her heart for Xavier University students. She vocally trained her students in classical music; dedicating not only herself as a Vocal Music professor but also implanting discipline and character in her students. Sister Elise was a friend, mother, and professor to me for life. The training Sister Mary Elise started with me in college re ected the training my mother, Mrs. Clothilde Bernard, gave me at home and continued with my mentor, Mrs. Edith Stern. These women instilled in me things I have carried with me throughout my professional career. Because of these three exceptional women, I had the courage to rise above hypocrisy and, what seemed at the time, impossibilities, that through hard work became possible. I believe, however, that human beings are placed on a God-given path. Sister Mary Elise, Mrs. Stern and my mother were the necessary guides to lead me to my present
and future life. When the curtain falls, our response to God will not be what part we played, but how well we played the part that was assigned to us.
