On behalf of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, Daily Racing Form, and the National Turf Writers And Broadcasters, we are delighted that you are with us this evening at the 52nd Annual Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club. Tonight, we celebrate the greatness of Thoroughbred racing and crown our champion horses and outstanding individuals of 2022. This evening brings the Eclipse Awards to my backyard and one of the most historic resorts in America, The Breakers Palm Beach. I’m thrilled to be able to share The Breakers with the Thoroughbred racing industry and bring its glamour into the homes of all those watching on FanDuel TV. We also are excited to welcome our ceremony announcer – Caton Bredar – and our masters of ceremony – Britney Eurton, Scott Hazelton, and Maggie Wolfendale-Morley – to guide us through tonight’s event. Together, with all of tonight’s presenters, we will honor the excellence in Thoroughbred racing from 2022. Tonight, 17 winners will be named the best in each of their respective categories. We will honor Jay Privman, recently retired and longtime national correspondent for Daily Racing Form, with a Special Eclipse Award for a career of excellence and outstanding contributions to the sport of Thoroughbred racing. We will honor six Media Award winners, and we will take time remembering those who we lost this past year, whose work has left an enduring mark on the industry. We will salute our 2022 Horseplayer of the Year, David Harrison of Webster, N.Y., who topped a field of 623 entries to win last year’s NTRA National Horseplayers Championship in Las Vegas. We also will recognize the FanDuel-NTRA Moment of the Year for 2022, as voted on by fans. All of these accolades will then culminate in the announcement of the 2022 Horse of the Year. We would like to offer a special thank you to our Eclipse Awards presenting sponsors and official partners, without whom tonight would not be possible. Our sincere thanks to our official charity, the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, for all the work you do. And thank you to our broadcast partners – FanDuel TV, Racetrack Television Network (RTN), and the many internet streaming platforms broadcasting tonight’s show live to a global audience. 4 The 52nd Annual Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. Tonight we welcome a talented trio of accomplished racing presenters in Britney Eurton, Scott Hazelton, and Maggie Wolfendale-Morley as hosts for the 52nd Annual Eclipse Awards. Eurton serves as a host and reporter for Thoroughbred racing’s largest events through her work with FanDuel TV and NBC Sports, including the Triple Crown, Royal Ascot, and the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. She returns to the Eclipse Awards in 2023 having cohosted the past three years. Eurton began her broadcasting career in 2014 and made her NBC Sports debut in 2017 in the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series telecasts. She covered her first Triple Crown for NBC Sports in 2018 and co-hosted the network’s coverage of Royal Ascot in both 2019 and 2022. Eurton, a graduate of the University of Southern California, is the daughter of Peter Eurton, a former jockey and accomplished Thoroughbred trainer. Hazelton began his broadcast career at HRTV before moving to TVG (now FanDuel TV), where he has covered the Triple Crown, Dubai World Cup, and Royal Ascot, among other premier events. He also serves as the Keeneland Paddock Show host and works with Keeneland as a sales announcer during its many auctions throughout the year. Hazelton is a graduate of Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. His father, the late Richard Hazelton, won more than 4,700 races during a training career that spanned more than 60 years. Wolfendale-Morley is a third-generation horsewoman who for the past 12 years has served as a host and paddock analyst for the New York Racing Association. She is a mainstay on the NYRAproduced shows “America’s Day at the Races” and “Saratoga Live,” which air on FOX Sports. Upon graduating from Towson University with a degree in public relations and broadcasting, Wolfendale-Morley worked as an on-air analyst for the Maryland Jockey Club and Colonial Downs before joining NYRA. 10 The 52nd Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. In early January, racing fans from around the world had the chance to vote on the 2022 FanDuel Racing-NTRA Moment of the Year, choosing from 11 of the most memorable, significant, and reflective events from the last 12 months of Thoroughbred racing in North America. Voters made their choices at the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) website, NTRA.com, and via Twitter, where every retweet or use of the official hashtag for the moments as presented on the @NTRA account was counted as one vote. The 2022 FanDuel Moment of the Year will be revealed during tonight’s ceremony. The eligible 2022 moments were selected to illustrate the wide range of human emotions and achievements, as well as outstanding displays of athleticism. Events that fans could choose from are listed chronologically as follows, along with the designated hashtag that could be used to vote: #GoodPegasus – Life Is Good kicks off his 2022 campaign with a front-running victory over 2021 Horse of the Year and champion older dirt male Knicks Go in the Pegasus World Cup Invitational. A 4-year-old Into Mischief colt, Life Is Good would go on to win the Whitney Stakes and Woodward Stakes during the year. #SecretCoach – Secret Oath, exiting a third-place finish against males in the Arkansas Derby, wins the Longines Kentucky Oaks to give then 86-year-old trainer D. Wayne Lukas (The Coach) his fourth Oaks win. The Arrogate filly would again take on males in the Preakness Stakes in her next start and finish fourth. #RosesforRichie – Rich Strike, at odds of 80-1, wins the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve after drawing in from the also-eligible list the day before the Run for the Roses. Trainer Eric Reed had claimed the Derby winner for $30,000 out of a maiden-claiming race at Churchill Downs in September 2021 that Rich Strike won by 17 1/4 lengths. #ImpressiveNest – Nest scores an impressive 4 1/4-length win over archrival Secret Oath in the Alabama Stakes. Coming off a 12 1/4-length win over that same rival in the Coaching Club American Oaks, Nest solidifies her spot at the top of the 3-year-old filly division for trainer Todd Pletcher. #EpicTravers – Epicenter wins the Runhappy Travers Stakes by 5 1/4 lengths to score his first Grade 1 win. The Not This Time colt, favored in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness while finishing second in both, emerges as a divisional leader after his Midsummer Derby victory. #PacificFlight – Flightline flies away from the competition to win the TVG Pacific Classic by an astounding 19 1/4 lengths. Undefeated in four lifetime starts, Flightline makes his two-turn debut a laugher as the 4-year-old son of Tapit stuns the racing world with a legendary performance. #ForCody – A heartwarming story with the ultimate ending, Cody’s Wish takes the Big Ass Fans Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile in dramatic fashion. With namesake Cody Dorman and family in attendance, Cody’s Wish gives a winning performance that warms the hearts of all who watched in amazement. #MalathaatNose – Malathaat closes her stellar career with a thrilling nose victory over Blue Stripe in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff. The three-way photo finish in the Distaff, with Clairiere another nose back in third, gave Malathaat, a daughter of Curlin, six total Grade 1 wins and a perfect 4-for-4 record at Keeneland. #PerfectFlight – Finishing his career a perfect 6 for 6, Flightline wins the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic by a record 8 1/4 lengths. An odds-on favorite in every start and winning by six lengths or more in each race, Flightline’s dominant win at Keeneland against a stellar field leads to comparisons with the all-time greats. #EarningsLeader – Irad Ortiz Jr. eclipses his own record for single-year North American earnings by a jockey in early November following three Breeders’ Cup wins. Ortiz passes the $34,109,019 mark he set in 2019 and ends the year with $37,075,772. #FlightShare – A 2.5 percent share of Flightline brings $4.6 million in a unique offering at Keeneland minutes before the start of the November breeding stock sale. Brookdale’s Freddy Seitz, bidding on behalf of an undisclosed client, fends off challengers such as Coolmore, the direct underbidders, to land the prized offering. 2022 FANDUEL RACING-NTRA Moment of the Year

12 The 52nd Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. By David Grening When the search for superlatives to describe what Flightline accomplished in 2022 ends, there will be one moniker left to hang on the unbeaten colt. Champion. Though Flightline ran just three times in 2022, competing for a total of 5 minutes, 32.92 seconds, he gave his connections and racing fans everlasting memories. His Grade 1 victories in the Hill ‘n’ Dale Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park in June, TVG Pacific Classic at Del Mar in September, and the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland in November came by a combined 33 1/2 lengths and made him a finalist – and likely winner – of an Eclipse Award in the older dirt male division. John Sadler trained Flightline for Hronis Racing, Siena Farm, West Point Thoroughbreds, and Jane Lyon’s Summer Wind Equine, which also bred the son of Tapit out of the Indian Charlie mare Feathered. Though his 4-year-old campaign was delayed due to a hock injury that forced him to miss a race in March, Flightline dazzled in his 2022 debut, overcoming a slow start and failed attempts to box him in to win the Met Mile by six lengths. It was his first start since the previous Dec. 26 when he completed a perfect 3-year-old campaign with an 11 1/2-length victory in the Grade 1 Malibu at Santa Anita. Flightline elevated his profile immeasurably in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic on Sept. 3 when he ran away from a field that included Dubai World Cup winner Country Grammer and Santa Anita Handicap winner Express Train to win by 19 1/4 lengths, running 1 1/4 miles in 1:59.28 while taken in hand late by jockey Flavien Prat. “You can debate a lot of stuff, but you can’t debate that was one of the greatest races ever run by a Thoroughbred racehorse,” Sadler said. Flightline’s third and final start of 2022 – and his career – came in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland, where he met seven Grade 1 winners, including Life Is Good, who one year earlier won the Big Ass Fans Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile and who figured to play catch me if you can in the 1 1/4-mile race. Though Life Is Good opened up two lengths after running an opening half-mile in 45.47 and six furlongs in 1:09.27, Flightline had yet to be asked by jockey Flavien Prat. When Prat did go after Life Is Good, Flightline shot past him in upper stretch, and with Prat just pushing on the reins drew away to an 8 1/4-length victory, running 1 1/4 miles in 2:00.05. As Flightline came to the wire, Larry Collmus, calling the race for NBC, described it as, “A spine-tingling, jaw-dropping, awe-inspiring, Secretariat-like Breeders’ Cup Classic win.” In his post-race interview, Sadler teared up as he attempted to describe Flightline’s performance. “How do you describe greatness?” Sadler said. “This is a rare horse that happens every 20 or 30 years. One of the best American racehorses we’ve seen in a long, long time. And I’m talking about Secretariat, Seattle Slew, you go through the list and what I’ve tried to be is a good steward to him.” Flightline was so special that on Nov. 7, two days after his BC win, a 2.5 percent interest in him was purchased for $4.6 million. Flightline was retired to Lane’s End Farm where he will stand his first season at stud in 2023. 14 The 52nd Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. By David Grening In a Hall of Fame career that has spanned 26 years, trainer Todd Pletcher has conditioned 12 champions, two Kentucky Derby winners, and four Belmont Stakes winners. While Life Is Good doesn’t fall into any of those categories, Pletcher still calls him, “As good a horse as we’ve ever had.” In 2022, Life Is Good was about as good a horse as anybody trained, winning three Grade 1 stakes – the Pegasus World Cup Invitational, Whitney, and Woodward – as part of a 4-for-6 campaign that resulted in him being named a finalist for an Eclipse Award in the older dirt male division. A son of Into Mischief bred by Gary and Mary West and owned by China Horse Club and WinStar Farm, Life Is Good entered 2022 with a near-perfect career record. He was 5 for 6 with a neck loss to champion Jackie’s Warrior in the Grade 1 H. Allen Jerkens in the summer of 2021. What was supposed to be a matchup of speed between Life Is Good and 2021 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Knicks Go in the $3 million Pegasus in January turned into a mismatch. Life Is Good easily made the lead and went on to beat Knicks Go – the 2021 Horse of the Year – by 3 1/4 lengths. That race appeared to set Life Is Good up perfectly for the $12 million Dubai World Cup in March. Seemingly cruising on the lead, Life Is Good weakened in the final furlong of the 1 1/4-mile race and finished fourth, 2 1/4 lengths behind winner Country Grammer. Pletcher felt the deep Meydan surface had more to do with the result than Life Is Good’s inability to see out 10 furlongs. Back in the U.S., Life Is Good rebounded with a facile five-length victory over Grade 1 winner Speaker’s Corner in the Grade 2 John Nerud Stakes going seven furlongs at Belmont Park. Life is Good then used his speed to win the Grade 1 Whitney at Saratoga and Grade 1 Woodward at the Belmont at the Big A meet. While his Woodward score was not as dominant as many expected, his connections still pushed forward to the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic and a meeting with Flightline to decide Horse of the Year. In that race, Life Is Good opened up a two-length advantage under Irad Ortiz Jr. while running six furlongs in 1:09.27, but succumbed to the mighty Flightline and finished fifth, 12 1/2 lengths behind. “We could have chosen an easier path on Breeders’ Cup Day, the Dirt Mile or the Sprint, we just felt like he deserved a chance to be champion,” Pletcher said. “He just happened to fall in the same year as Flightline, who was just another special horse.” Pletcher, who trained Life Is Good for two of his three racing seasons, said: “It was a lot of fun for us to have him. He’ll probably be as good a horse as ever not to win an Eclipse Award.” Life Is Good, who won 9 of 12 starts and earned $4.5 million, will stand his first season at stud in 2023 at WinStar Farm. 16 The 52nd Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. By David Grening In an era where Grade 1-level horses make only a handful of starts, Olympiad was a bit of a throwback. In 2022, Olympiad ran eight times, winning six races, including five graded stakes, to earn a spot as a finalist for an Eclipse Award in the older dirt male division. One of his two losses came in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic, where he finished second to the undefeated Flightline. Trainer Bill Mott had high hopes for Olympiad in his youth, but the son of Speightstown was away from the races for a year – September 2021 to September 2022 – due to myriad issues, which Mott called mostly baby stuff. Olympiad returned in the fall of 2021, winning once from three starts. That set him up for a solid 2022 campaign. In January, Olympiad won an allowance race at Gulfstream Park by 7 1/4 lengths. He then took the Grade 3 Mineshaft in February and Grade 2 New Orleans Classic in March, both at Fair Grounds. Olympiad ran his winning streak to five with similar stalkingstyle victories in the Alysheba and Stephen Foster – both Grade 2 stakes run at Churchill Downs. In the Stephen Foster, he defeated Americanrevolution, the same horse who in December 2021 had beaten Olympiad in the Grade 1 Cigar Mile at Aqueduct. “This horse has such a big stride on him and really extends it late in races,” Junior Alvarado, Olympiad’s regular rider, said after the Stephen Foster. “I think as he’s gotten older he’s gotten faster in each start.” The Stephen Foster win was to set up Olympiad’s return to Grade 1 company in the Whitney. Unfortunately, Olympiad was a non-factor in that race, finishing fourth, 9 1/4 lengths behind Life Is Good. Mott deduced that Olympiad didn’t handle the heat that day and was eager to give him another Grade 1 try in the Jockey Club Gold Cup, also at Saratoga. Receiving the same stalking-from-second trip that Alvarado had given him in all his previous victories in 2022, Olympiad won the Jockey Club Gold Cup by two lengths. “He seemed a little dull and really that’s the only excuse I could give him,” Mott said about Olympiad’s Whitney result. “He didn’t fire, but he did come back and rebound well in the Jockey Club Gold Cup.” Mott said he was looking forward to the challenge of taking on Flightline in the Classic, calling it a privilege to be in such a highly anticipated race. Sent off a generous 26-1 in the Breeders’ Cup Classic behind Flightline, Olympiad proved best of the rest, finishing a half-length in front of Taiba. “Our horse ran great,” Mott said. “Any other year, he might have won a Breeders’ Cup Classic.” Olympiad, bred by Emory A. Hamilton, and owned by Grandview Equine, Cheyenne Stable and LNJ Foxwoods, finished his career with a record of 8-2-1 from 13 starts and earnings of $3,027,560. 18 The 52nd Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. By Brad Free Over her first three campaigns, Clairiere added credibility to a Thoroughbred adage: “Breed the best to the best, and hope for the best.” Clairiere is prime example that sometimes the product of a top stallion and a top broodmare is indeed a top racehorse. Sired by Curlin and produced by Grade 1-winning mare Cavorting, Clairiere followed her 2020-21 seasons with another outstanding campaign as a 4-year-old in 2022. Clairiere won three races including Grade 1 and Grade 2 victories over nemesis Malathaat, and missed by only a head finishing third in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff. It makes well-bred Clairiere an Eclipse Award finalist for the second straight year. A finalist for outstanding 3-year-old filly of 2021, Clairiere is a finalist for older dirt female of 2022. The bar was always set high for Clairiere, who is owned and was bred by Stonestreet, and trained by Steve Asmussen. The 2022 goal for Clairiere was to polish her résumé. Although she had won a Grade 1 and placed in two other Grade 1’s for 3-yearold fillies, she was a notch below older fillies and mares. In her final race of 2021 and first start against older in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, she finished fourth. Clairiere entered 2022 with something to prove – to rise from the 3-year-old filly ranks and compete with the country’s best older females. She began with a confidence-builder at Fair Grounds. The 1-10 favorite in a three-other-than allowance route, Clairiere and new jockey Joel Rosario won by six lengths. Asmussen shipped Clairiere to Oaklawn Park for her second start of the season, in the Grade 1 Apple Blossom Handicap against multiple Grade 1 winners Letruska and Ce Ce. Clairiere broke slowly, while Letruska made an easy lead and wired the field. Clairiere ran well, runner-up by 1 1/4 lengths. She was still looking for her first Grade 1 against older fillies and mares, and the opportunity arrived in the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps on June 11 at Belmont Park. While the front-runners smoked, Clairiere and Rosario dropped to last in the five-horse field. When the pace collapsed, Clairiere rallied outside and upset Malathaat by a head. It was not a fluke. Six weeks later in the Grade 2 Shuvee at Saratoga, Clairiere defeated Malathaat again, by 1 1/2 lengths. It turned out to be the final win of the season for Clairiere. She false-broke in the Grade 1 Personal Ensign at Saratoga next out, sustained a tongue laceration, and totally misfired for the first time in her career. It definitely was a fluke. Clairiere recovered soon after, and trained forwardly for her season finale in the Distaff at Keeneland. Clairiere returned to form, but missed by a head behind Malathaat and runner-up Blue Stripe. The 3-for-6 campaign by Clairiere increased her career total to six wins and earnings of $2,115,592 from 16 starts. As of early January, Clairiere was training for Asmussen at Fair Grounds in preparation for her 5-year-old campaign in 2023. 20 The 52nd Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. By Marty McGee Goodnight Olive didn’t get started on her 4-year-old campaign seriously until nearly half of 2022 was over – but once she did, the filly was absolutely perfect. As a result she was named as a finalist for both champion female sprinter and older dirt female. Bothered primarily by ankle issues at 2 and 3, Goodnight Olive finally was ready to undertake a serious campaign on June 22, when she returned from an eight-month layoff with a 5 1/2-length victory in a second-level allowance going seven furlongs at Belmont Park. The comeback gave her owners and trainer Chad Brown hope that she might finally be sound enough to fulfill her immense potential. “There have been more bad phone calls than good ones along the way with this horse,” Brown said after Goodnight Olive capped a 4-for-4 season by winning the Nov. 5 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at Keeneland. “A couple of times she’s had to stop, although every time she’s run, she’s proven she’s there. A remarkable record, with all the stoppages and such.” Goodnight Olive was purchased as a yearling for $170,000 in October 2019 at Fasig-Tipton Kentucky by the First Row Partners of Steve Laymon. Team Hanley (Jay Hanley) bought into her before she incurred her only career defeat in her March 2021 debut at Gulfstream Park. The filly went on to win her next two races at 3 before needing more time off. Once ready, she was unbeatable. Following the easy June win, Goodnight Olive captured a third-level allowance sprint on Aug. 7 at Saratoga, setting her up for her stakes debut three weeks later in the Grade 1 Ballerina at Saratoga. She won with aplomb, taking over after turning for home to prevail by 2 3/4 lengths. “They were going a little fast, but she was going the right way,” said Irad Ortiz Jr., who rode Goodnight Olive in all four of her 2022 starts. “She was relaxed and in a good spot. I bided my time and waited.” Off that impressive score, Goodnight Olive was the 9-5 favorite in a field of 12 in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. Another terrific trip unfolded, with Ortiz guiding her home from just off the pace in a convincing 2 1/2-length victory. Goodnight Olive was bred in Kentucky by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings. She was sired by Ghostzapper and produced by Salty Strike, by Smart Strike. She finished the year with $915,450, bringing her career total to $1,019,950 on a 6-for-7 record. After getting time off following the Breeders’ Cup, Goodnight Olive will gear back up at Payson Park in Florida for a 5-year-old campaign. Brown and the owners have expressed interest in ultimately stretching her out to longer distances, alluding to a pedigree that suggests she might well be able to handle more ground. 22 The 52nd Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. By Brad Free Malathaat had a tough act to follow when she began her 4-yearold campaign in spring 2022. After all, the previous season she won three Grade 1s and an Eclipse Award as outstanding 3-year-old filly. Turns out the sequel was even better than the original. Racing six times in 2022, Malathaat ran faster than the year before, faced better company, won more often, and capped her exceptional career with a thrilling photo-finish victory in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Keeneland. All of which makes Malathaat, by Curlin, an Eclipse Award finalist as outstanding older dirt female of 2022. Getting there was half the fun. Bred by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings, Shadwell Farm purchased Malathaat for $1,050,000 at the 2019 Keeneland September yearling sale. At age 2, Malathaat was sent to Todd Pletcher, who trained her Grade 1-winning dam, Dreaming of Julia. Over the 2020 and 2021 seasons, Malathaat emerged as one of the country’s top fillies, winning seven of nine. The 2022 season was her magnum opus, despite an underwhelming start to her campaign. Malathaat returned in April at Keeneland, odds-on in the Grade 3 Doubledogdare, her first start since finishing third in the 2021 Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Malathaat scored a workmanlike victory by three-quarters of a length in the Doubledogdare. The next start by Malathaat was frustrating. In the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps at Belmont Park, Malathaat rallied from behind, made the lead late, but lost her focus and was collared by Clairiere. Malathaat earned a career-high 106 Beyer, but missed by a head. Pletcher and jockey John Velazquez agreed she may benefit by the addition of blinkers. The Grade 2 Shuvee in July at Saratoga was expected to be the turnaround for blinkers-on Malathaat. However, she was unusually flat, possibly due to the heat, and finished second at odds-on. It was her second consecutive loss to Clairiere. Ultimately, blinkers did the trick, and Malathaat did not lose again. She returned to peak form in August at Saratoga, winning Grade 1 Personal Ensign. As a prep race before the BC Distaff, she entered the Grade 1 Juddmonte Spinster in October at Keeneland. Malathaat ran away, winning by more than five lengths in the most lopsided graded stakes victory of her career. Next stop, Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Facing a field that included six other Grade 1 winners, including stablemate Nest, Malathaat overcame traffic to win by a nose over Blue Stripe. The swan-song Distaff was her fourth win from six starts in 2022, and third consecutive Grade 1. Her retirement from racing was announced soon afterward. Malathaat has joined the Shadwell broodmare band and will be bred to Into Mischief. If she is named champion older dirt female, Malathaat would join a select list of Eclipse-winning 3-year-old fillies who later won the Eclipse as older dirt female. Those include Life’s Magic, Royal Delta, and Beholder. Malathaat retires having won 10 races and $3,790,8215 from 14 starts. She is the top filly sired by Curlin. For the love of the horse. For generations to come. A year for us all to be proud of.

24 The 52nd Annual Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. By Matt Hegarty In sports photography, luck is always the residue of design. So don’t call it lucky that Wendy Wooley captured the perfect shot of one of the most controversial stretch runs of 2022. A full-time photographer who is the co-owner of EquiSport Photos with her husband, Matt, Wooley was at Churchill Downs on Oct. 1 on assignment for the Breeders’ Cup to shoot the Ack Ack Stakes. But Rich Strike, the 2022 Kentucky Derby winner, was running in the Lukas Classic on the same card, so Wooley lugged her gear to the far clubhouse turn at the track with the intent of getting a head-on shot of the finish. Rich Strike engaged in a furious battle with Hot Rod Charlie to the finish line, but it wasn’t the horses that eventually drew all the attention. It was Sonny Leon, the rider of Rich Strike, who physically engaged with Hot Rod Charlie’s rider, Tyler Gaffalione, in an incident that got him a suspension of 15 days. In explaining the apparent elbows that he threw while in tight quarters, Leon claimed that his saddle slipped. The photo doesn’t show any evidence of that. It does show Leon’s elbow drifting well over the neck of Hot Rod Charlie as the horses battle neck-and-neck to the wire. Hot Rod Charlie eventually prevailed. Wooley raced to the press box after getting her shots and showed them to Jennie Rees, the Eclipse Award-winning journalist who is now a publicist. “You’ve got to see this!” she told Rees. “I realized I was the only one with that angle,” Wooley said. “No one else shot the head-on that day.” This is the first Eclipse for Wooley, who said she was a “typical horse-crazy girl” when growing up in Detroit. “Winning an Eclipse Award feels surreal to me,” she said of her image that appeared on the Paulick Report website. “It’s an amazing honor. I’m a bit speechless.” That’s okay. A picture is worth a thousand words. WENDY WOOLEY PHOTOGRAPHY Wendy Wooley MEDIA

28 The 52nd Annual Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. By Matt Hegarty Tim Layden, a writer-at-large for NBC Sports, won his third writing Eclipse Award by taking a step back, into the time when Hollywood Park loomed large for horse racing. The hook for the award-winning Feature/Commentary story, which appeared on the NBC Sports website, was the 2022 Super Bowl, held that February at SoFi Stadium – which was built on the property that once housed Hollywood Park. When Hollywood Park was bulldozed in 2015, Layden wrote, it “took its place as the most famous among dozens of racetracks shuttered in the last 25 years.” “It is manifest truth that most of our bricks-and-mortar memories will pass into their own afterlives, compelled by various forms of progress,” wrote Layden. The story goes on to dip into the lives of Hollywood’s most famous athletes, including Zenyatta, and the bittersweet memories that still accompany the track’s demise. Layden won his first Eclipse in 1987, when working for Capital Newspapers. He credited that Eclipse for getting him a job at Newsday, and credited that job for getting him a coveted role at Sports Illustrated, where he took over the racing beat in 2001 from Bill Nack, the late legend who himself won seven Eclipse Awards for writing. While at Sports Illustrated, Layden won his second Eclipse, in 2018, for a story that also took readers through a journey into racing’s history book, by focusing on the legendary call of Secretariat’s Belmont Stakes by the late Chic Anderson. In that story, Layden wove together bits of Anderson’s biography to tell the complete tale behind what may be the most famous seven words in racing lore: “Secretariat is moving like a tremendous machine.” Layden credited his bosses at NBC Sports for encouraging him to write the SoFi-Hollywood story. “It’s a thrill to see that work recognized, not just because we all like to be recognized, but also because of NBC’s enduring relationship with racing,” Layden said. By Matt Hegarty In a time of tight deadlines and the always-on internet, Tom Law took an old-school, throwback approach to a recap of the 2022 Preakness Stakes and was awarded the Eclipse Award for News/Enterprise for his effort. In “Big Tally,” which appeared in the July edition of the MidAtlantic Thoroughbred, Law painstakingly revealed the stepby-step decisions that led to Early Voting winning the Preakness, going as far back as the fall of the colt’s 2-year-old year; retraced the dynamics of the race and Early Voting’s path to victory; and then used follow-up reporting to fill in details that many reporters often miss. What emerged was a thorough rendering of the care and strategy provided by Early Voting’s connections in their quest to win a coveted Triple Crown race, a whole-cloth report that distinguishes itself from the relatively incomplete stories that many reporters in the modern era are obliged to file in the minutes after the race has gone official to satisfy the demands of the internet. This is the second Eclipse for Law, who in 2011 shared the Audio/Multimedia and Internet Award with Greg Charkoudian of the Thoroughbred Times. Law is a seasoned reporter and editor, having worked for the now-defunct Thoroughbred Times for 14 years and spending the last 10 years as managing editor of ST Publishing, the Clancy brothers joint venture that is based in Law’s hometown, Saratoga Springs, N.Y. “One of the many things I’ve learned working with colleagues, friends, and partners Joe and Sean Clancy for more than 10 years is there’s always a story behind the story, and probably even another story,” Law said. “That was the case with Early Voting and his connections.” TIM LAYDEN TOM LAW WRITING – FEATURE/COMMENTARY WRITING – NEWS/ENTERPRISE MEDIA

30 The 52nd Annual Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. MEDIA By Matt Hegarty For Mike Penna, the president and co-founder of Horse Racing Radio Network, which is being honored with its third Audio/Multimedia Eclipse Award, the planning for HRRN’s Breeders’ Cup coverage on Nov. 4-5 started months in advance of the event. “Content is everything,” Penna said. “You have to have content. And for that you need a lot of owners, trainers, jockeys, and handicappers who are willing to talk with us so we can put together the features and stories that we want to run.” HRRN, which is available over satellite radio and its website, broadcast for three hours on Breeders’ Cup Friday and 6 1/2 hours on Breeders’ Cup Saturday, culminating with a continuous hour of coverage focused on the Breeders’ Cup Classic. For that segment, which was the one judged by the panel who selected HRRN as the Eclipse winner, HRRN had a feature story on Flightline’s life prior to becoming a superstar, live interviews with his connections, and updates from other contenders in the Classic, for a seamless hour of entertainment that also included the live call of the race and postrace interviews and analysis. Penna said that broadcasting continuously for nine hours over two days takes its toll, but that pre-broadcast work by the HRRN team paid off. “And fortunately there are so many good stories surrounding all the Breeders’ Cup races that we had that content that you need,” Penna said. Penna’s broadcast team included Bobby Neuman, Jude Feld, and Jeff Bloom. Kurt Becker, Keeneland’s announcer, provided the live call of the Classic. The broadcast was produced by Lee Dellapina with assistance from engineer Shawn Seay, Feld, Justin Taylor, Keith O’Brien, Fanny Salmon, and Michelle Penna. By Matt Hegarty NBC Sports won its third consecutive Live Racing Television Eclipse this year – and its 10th out of the last 11 years – by once again incorporating the latest in broadcasting technology and narrative form to its 2022 Breeders’ Cup telecast. Produced by Lindsay Schanzer, the broadcast stretched over two days and three television networks. With 75 cameras located in and around Keeneland Racecourse, where the Breeders’ Cup was held Nov. 4-5, NBC delivered a multitude of perspectives to its viewers. “At NBC Sports, we are grateful to be a part of the biggest horse racing events in the country – and [the 2021] Breeders’ Cup capped them all off with an absolute flourish,” Schanzer said. “The entire weekend was a thrill, highlighted by the inspirational story of Dirt Mile winner Cody’s Wish and his namesake Cody Dorman, and the otherworldly Flightline finishing his illustrious career with a dominant win in the Classic. These are moments you dream about covering.” The director of the two-day broadcast was Kaare Numme, assisted by Jared Sumner and Jeff Buriesci. The assistant producer was Caroline Sayer, and the editorial producer was Amy Zimmerman. The broadcast team was comprised of Ahmed Fareed, Jerry Bailey, Randy Moss, Britney Eurton, Donna Brothers, Kenny Rice, Nick Luck, Matt Bernier, Steve Kornacki, and Larry Collmus. For all the thrills that racing provides on the track, the sport’s best stories are often those that illuminate the unique connections between horses and humans, those bonds that invigorate both sides while remaining mysterious, even spiritual. Cody Dorman, who was born with Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome, a rare and disabling genetic disorder, visited Gainsborough Farm in 2018 through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. While touring the farm, he was introduced to a 6-month-old weanling. The foal placed his head in Cody’s lap, a touching moment captured by still cameras. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dorman’s parents asked to return to Gainsborough to lift their son’s spirits, in the hopes of checking in with the foal that took such an interest in him. “You might say that what happened next was miraculous,” said Tom Hammond, during the narration of a feature story on Dorman for NBC Sports that ran during the network’s Breeders’ Cup telecast. The story was selected for the 2022 Eclipse for Feature Television. Now 2 years old, the weanling that Cody met in 2018 pulled on his handlers until he was allowed to re-visit the child, much to Cody’s delight. After the episode, the horse was promptly named Cody’s Wish, and he went on to become the 2022 Big Fans Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner and Eclipse finalist in the male sprinter category. “For as long as I’ve been working on horse racing, I can’t recall a connection between horse and human like the bond shared by Cody Dorman and Cody’s Wish,” said Jack Felling, the NBC Sports coordinating producer for the story. “That horse has truly made a lasting impact on Cody’s life.” HRRN NBC SPORTS AUDIO/MULTIMEDIA INTERNET TELEVISION – LIVE AND FEATURE

32 The 52nd Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. By Steve Andersen The first time Down Royal raced at Saratoga, she finished last of 10 in a maiden race for 2-year-old sprinters on a sloppy track in July 2016. Six years later, Down Royal was back at Saratoga with an incredibly different result. She was the center of attention early on a Wednesday afternoon in July when she won the Grade 1 A.P. Smithwick Hurdle, a $150,000 race at 2 1/16 miles, for the richest win of her career. Down Royal had her best season last year. An 8-year-old mare in 2022, Down Royal won two graded stakes for hurdlers and earned a position among the finalists for the Eclipse Award as the year’s outstanding steeplechaser. The success was far from her loss on a wet track at Saratoga in 2016, or three winless seasons from 2018 to 2020. Instead, her 2022 campaign was the continuation of a fine 2021 season, in which Down Royal won 3 of 4 starts, including two stakes. Down Royal’s success has been a family affair for the husbandand-wife team of Bernie and Kate Dalton. They bred Down Royal, who races for Joseph Fowler. Kate Dalton trains Down Royal, while Bernie is the jockey and has been aboard the mare for all of her races over obstacles. Down Royal began her 2022 racing season by winning the Margaret Currey Henley Hurdle for fillies and mares on May 14 in Nashville. Down Royal was second in the race in 2019 and 2021. Down Royal had her second start in the Smithwick on July 20 and was the 6-1 fourth choice of seven and the only mare in the field. Down Royal closed from sixth with a wide move on the turn to take the lead in the final strides from the longshot Chief Justice. As Down Royal moved into contention, Kate Dalton thought a third-place finish would be an achievement, and second looked good to Dalton after the final hurdle. “It didn’t look like she was going to pass Chief Justice, and I was delighted with second,” she said after the race. “But she just kept giving 100 percent. It’s what she does. “I don’t know why she’s suddenly got so good, but she has.” The only blemish on Down Royal’s 2022 season occurred in Saratoga’s top jump race, the Grade 1 Jonathan Sheppard Stakes on Aug. 17. Down Royal was fifth early and was never a factor, finishing sixth, 20 1/4 lengths behind winner Snap Decision, another Eclipse finalist. Two months later, Down Royal was back in the winner’s circle after the Grade 2 Zeke Ferguson Memorial Handicap Hurdle at Great Meadow in Virginia. Again, Down Royal stalked the early pace in a field of four and was well in front before winning by 3 1/2 lengths in the final start of the best season of her career. 34 The 52nd Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. By Steve Andersen In Britain, Ireland, and the United States, Hewick claimed major stakes for jumpers in 2022. A comprehensive win in the Grade 1, $250,000 Grand National at Far Hills Racecourse in New Jersey on Oct. 15 in his final start of the year landed Hewick on the list of finalists for the Eclipse Award as the 2022 outstanding steeplechaser – and into an Irish pub for a victory celebration. Hewick was rated as a European contender in a field of nine in the Grand National and performed to expectations. He was always well-placed behind pacesetter Pistol Whipped and was urged to the front by jockey Jordan Gainford on the backstretch of the final circuit. Hewick was in control of the race and drew away to win by 11 1/2 lengths over Noah And The Ark, the 41-1 winner of the Grade 1 Lonesome Glory Hurdle on Sept. 15 at the Belmont at Aqueduct meeting. Snap Decision, the winner of two Grade 1 races earlier in the year – the Iroquois Hurdle in May and the Jonathan Sheppard Hurdle at Saratoga in August – could only manage sixth. Hewick, a 7-year-old gelding in 2022 bought for approximately $1,000, races for T.J. McDonald and trainer Shark Hanlon. Bred in Ireland by William Quinn, Hewick took McDonald and Hanlon on quite an adventure through three countries in 2022 in a campaign that had its share of drama. Hewick was pulled up in his first start, the $197,700 Midlands Grand National at 4 1/4 miles at Uttoxeter Racecourse on March 19 in Britain, a prep for the famous English Grand National. Hewick did not race again until the $205,400 Bet365 Gold Cup chase at 3 5/8 miles at Sandown Racecourse near London on April 23. Dismissed at 16-1 in a field of 15, Hewick raced near the front throughout, took the lead three fences from the finish, and won by eight lengths. The style of the win was the theme of Hewick’s completed races in 2022. In a handicap hurdle at 3 1/8 miles at Ballinrobe Racecourse on May 31 in Ireland, Hewick raced near the front again, led by three lengths two hurdles from the finish, but was caught late and lost by a head. Two months later, Hewick won his richest start of the year in the $273,200 Galway Plate over fences at 2 3/4 miles at Galway Racecourse in Ireland. Despite being harassed by a loose horse in the last quarter-mile, Hewick won by a half-length at 16-1. He appeared on his way to a win in the $199,400 Kerry National chase at three miles on Sept. 21 at Listowel only to unseat Gainford at the final fence. The partnership was back to sound jumping in the Grand National at Far Hills in America’s richest race in the steeplechase division. Back in Ireland, Hanlon found a unique way to celebrate. As part of a community celebration of the Grand National win, Hanlon walked Hewick into the Pint Depot pub in County Carlow, where the star gelding was served a pint of Guinness. 36 The 52nd Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. By Steve Andersen From the big race of the spring to the showcase stakes of the summer, Snap Decision took his customary position as a leader in the American steeplechase division in 2022. All that was missing was a major stakes win in the fall. Snap Decision, an 8-year-old in 2022, accomplished enough to gain a position as a leading finalist for the Eclipse Award as the nation’s outstanding steeplechaser, the third consecutive year the gelding has been nominated. Snap Decision was the only two-time Grade 1 winner in 2022 in American jump racing. Owned by the Bruton Street-US partnership of Mike Hankin, Charlie Fenwick, and Charlie Noell and trained by Jack Fisher, Snap Decision won 2 of 5 starts over obstacles in 2022. Snap Decision’s season began with a second in the Grade 2 Temple Gwathmey Hurdle at 2 1/2 miles in Virginia in April, a race he won in 2021. The Gwathmey served as a prep for an easy win in the Grade 1 Iroquois Hurdle by 7 1/4 lengths at three miles on May 14 at Nashville. After a third in the Colonial Cup at 1 1/2 miles on the flat on July 27 at Colonial Downs in Virginia, Snap Decision ran arguably the best race of his career, winning the Grade 1 Jonathan Sheppard Hurdle at 2 3/8 miles by 13 1/4 lengths on Aug. 17 at Saratoga. Snap Decision was not only the 164-pound highweight, but the 1-2 favorite. He led throughout under regular rider Graham Watters. “He’s got the biggest engine by far of any horse I’ve ever ridden,” Watters said after the race. “I just let him use it. Simple.” Watters was 30 when he won the Sheppard and was left wondering if he will find another mount in his career as talented as Snap Decision. “He’s a horse of a lifetime and if I’m just mentioning the horse’s name, I get emotional about him,” he said. “He’s an absolute legend of an animal. I’ll never come across another one of him. “I’ve just got to soak it up.” Fisher advised Watters to be prominent early if the pace was reasonable. “I told him, ‘Don’t go crazy fast if they want to go crazy fast,’ ” Fisher said. “If not, just go and be on the lead and say, ‘Come and get me.’ ” Snap Decision had two starts after Labor Day with mixed results. He was second by nine lengths to the upstart Noah And The Ark in the Grade 1 Lonesome Glory Hurdle on Sept. 15 at the Belmont at Aqueduct meeting. Snap Decision carried 168 pounds, while Noah And The Ark carried 140 pounds. Snap Decision finished the year with a disappointing sixth in the Grade 1 Grand National Hurdle Stakes on Oct. 15 at Far Hills in New Jersey, failing to run his race in the final half-mile. For the year, Snap Decision earned $220,500, the most for an American-based jumper. 38 The 52nd Annual Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. By David Grening Blessed with blazing speed and able to carry it around two turns, Cave Rock won two Grade 1 stakes and finished second in the FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Juvenile to earn a spot as a finalist for the Eclipse Award in the 2-year-old male division. A son of Arrogate out of the Bellamy Road mare Georgie’s Angel, Cave Rock was bred by Anne and Ronnie Sheffer Racing LLC, is owned by Michael Pegram, Karl Watson, and Paul Weitman, and trained by Bob Baffert. He was purchased for $550,000 as a yearling at the 2021 Keeneland September sale. Cave Rock is named for a landmark in the South Lake Tahoe area. Cave Rock debuted Aug. 13 at Del Mar, setting fast early fractions and drawing clear from eight rivals to win by six lengths, earning a 101 Beyer Speed Figure. Sent off the 2-5 favorite in the Grade 1 Runhappy Del Mar Futurity, Cave Rock got involved in an early pace duel with stablemate Havnameltdown, quickly left him, and drew off to a 5 1/4-length victory. It was Baffert’s 16th victory in the Del Mar Futurity. Following those two performances, Cave Rock’s next assignment was 1 1/16 miles and two turns in the Grade 1 American Pharoah. He proved the added distance wasn’t an issue as he galloped to a 5 1/4-length victory over stablemate National Treasure, this time getting a 104 Beyer. Baffert trained Arrogate, the 2016 Travers winner and 2017 Dubai World Cup winner, who died in 2020 from an unspecified illness. Arrogate, at the very least, passed on his tremendous early speed to this progeny. “The really good ones come around quickly, and he’s always been different,” Baffert said of Cave Rock following the American Pharoah. “He’s built different than Arrogate. He’s powerful, stronger, and he’s quick. He runs with his head sort of low like Arrogate. He just keeps improving.” Many handicappers anointed Cave Rock a lock to win the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Keeneland. However, Cave Rock was hounded early by 70-1 shot Hurricane J through an opening quarter of 22.90 seconds. Though he was able to shake off Hurricane J shortly thereafter, he couldn’t fend off Forte in the stretch, succumbing to that one by 1 1/2 lengths while finishing 2 1/4 lengths clear of National Treasure, also trained by Baffert. “I saw that first quarter, I was worried about that,” Baffert said. “You can’t do that here. He’s such a good horse. Forte, he’s a good horse too. We got beat by a good horse.” As of early January, Cave Rock was in light training at Santa Anita and Baffert hadn’t yet picked out a spot for his 3-year-old debut. A special congratulations to Flightline and all of this year’s Eclipse Award fi nalists. In 2022, nothing came close.

40 The 52nd Annual Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. By David Grening Brilliant in his sprint debut in May, Forte proved he was not a flash in the pan, capturing three Grade 1 stakes through the summer and fall to become a finalist for the Eclipse Award in the 2-yearold male division. A son of Violence out of the Blame mare Queen Caroline, Forte is owned by Mike Repole’s Repole Stable and Vinnie and Teresa Viola’s St. Elias Stable and trained by Todd Pletcher. He capped his 2-year-old season with a 1 1/2-length victory in the $2 million FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Keeneland on Nov. 5. Thirtyone of the first 38 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winners were crowned divisional champions. Overall, Forte won 4 of 5 starts with Grade 1 victories in the Hopeful at Saratoga and Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland preceding the Breeders’ Cup. Somewhat surprisingly, he was not favored in any of his Grade 1 starts. He was favored in his debut at Belmont on May 27, a five-furlong race he won by 7 3/4 lengths. Sent off the favorite 7-5 favorite in a 12-horse Grade 3 Sanford at Saratoga, Forte finished fourth behind Mo Strike. Pletcher believes Forte didn’t handle the deep Saratoga surface that was in play the first part of the meet. However, the Sanford proved to be a productive race, with seven horses coming out of there to combine for 13 wins and seven stakes. In the Hopeful on Sept. 5, Forte was sent off the fourth choice in a field of six and edged away from a drifting-out Gulfport, the race favorite, to win by three lengths. In a 14-horse Breeders’ Futurity, at Keeneland on Oct. 8, Forte got locked in a stretch duel with favored debut winner Loggins, beating that one to the wire by a neck as the 4-1 second choice. In the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, Forte was a distant 5-1 second choice behind the 2-5 favorite Cave Rock. But when Cave Rock couldn’t make a clear lead, Forte swooped past him at the sixteenth pole to earn the victory under his regular rider Irad Ortiz Jr. “There was so much hype about Cave Rock, we were going to have to step it up and ultimately he did and beat him fair and square,” Pletcher said. In looking back, Pletcher deduced that the Sanford loss may have proven beneficial for Forte for the remainder of his campaign. “The experience that day of getting that kickback, that paid dividends down the road,” Pletcher said. “He was able to sit off the pace in the Breeders’ Futurity and Breeders’ Cup and take some kickback. I think that maybe it cost him on the day, but paid off for him later on.” Forte was sold at the 2021 Keeneland September yearling sale for $110,000. Following the Breeders’ Cup, Forte, who was bred by South Gate Farm, was sent to Stonestreet Farm for a break. He was scheduled to return to Pletcher’s winter base at Palm Beach Downs in early January and will point to the Grade 2, $400,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream on March 4 for his 3-year-old debut. 42 The 52nd Annual Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. By David Grening The Irish-based and -bred Victoria Road made his one start in North America count by outfinishing fellow European Silver Knott by a nose in the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, a performance that earned him a spot among the finalists for the Eclipse Award in the 2-year-old male division. Victoria Road is a son of Saxon Warrior owned by Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, and Georg von Opel’s Westerberg Racing. He is trained by Aidan O’Brien, who won his fifth running of the Juvenile Turf, which has been run 16 times. Victoria Road is the fourth straight Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner to earn enough votes to be a finalist in this division. Only one of the first 12 Juvenile Turf winners accomplished that feat. Prior to coming to the United States, Victoria Road raced seven times in Europe. After he lost his first four starts, Victoria Road won three straight from Aug. 10 through Sept. 17, including the Group 2 Prix de Conde at Chantilly in France. Those wins corresponded with a stretch-out in distance and a bit of a different running style. “We ran him over five and six [furlongs] early,” O’Brien said of Victoria Road after his Juvenile Turf win going one mile at Keeneland. “We were disappointed that he was getting beat. . . . Ryan [Moore] started to take his time with him – we were riding him forward over five and six – and when he did, he said that that was the way to ride him.” Moore rode Victoria Road in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. Breaking from the rail in the 14-horse field, Victoria Road traveled comfortably on the inside while racing in sixth position, always less than four lengths off the pace. Turning for home, Moore felt the need to get off the fence and was looking for room in the three path. Once it materialized, Victoria Road began to lengthen his stride, but was confronted by Silver Knott, a Godolphin-owned, Charlie Appleby-trained runner who had found room along the rail vacated by Moore. “There was a lot of traffic coming into the lane,” Moore said. “I thought I’d try to get out.” When Silver Knott got through on the fence, it appeared Victoria Road could be in trouble, but he had more to give to get the victory. “I felt he was coming to get me, but maybe [Victoria Road] did respond, or maybe the other horse’s run was ending,” said Moore, who also indicated his horse may have idled when he struck the front. Victoria Road was bred in Ireland by Trevor Stewart. Having previous success in Chantilly, Victoria Road is likely a candidate for the Prix du Jockey Club, known as the French Derby, in the first half of 2023, his connections said after the race. 44 The 52nd Annual Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. By Marty McGee Leave No Trace overachieved from start to finish in 2022. The dark bay filly began by capturing her career debut on July 20 at Saratoga, winning a 5 1/2-furlong restricted maiden race by 2 3/4 lengths as a 4-1 chance under Irad Ortiz Jr. Then came an immediate breakthrough. Dismissed at 14-1 making her next start in the Grade 1 Spinaway on closing weekend at Saratoga, Leave No Trace pressed all the pace before edging clear in the final furlong of the seven-furlong race to prevail by 1 1/2 lengths over favored Wonder Wheel. “With Leave No Trace, you get lucky enough to get a horse that can really run – and she can really run,” said trainer Phil Serpe. “That’s what you hope for every year.” In her next start, Leave No Trace finished third at nearly 8-1 behind Chocolate Gelato and You’re My Girl in the Grade 1 Frizette, held Oct. 2 over a sloppy track at the Belmont at the Big A meet. Then came her season finale in the Nov. 4 NetJets Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, a race that validated all she had done in previous starts. Overlooked at 25-1 when assigned post 12 in a field of 13 in the Grade 1 Juvenile Fillies at Keeneland, Leave No Trace ran bravely, forcing the pace the entire 1 1/16-mile distance before settling for second, three lengths behind Wonder Wheel. All in all, it was a highly creditable effort. “I don’t think the post position really helped us, but she broke so sharp and I had to just let her go,” said Jose Lezcano, who rode Leave No Trace in her last three races. “I think she put in a very good race. She’s a nice filly.” “I thought she ran a very good race,” said Serpe. “She got the lead. Wonder Wheel beat her. We beat Wonder Wheel before. We’ll beat her again.” Leave No Trace, the first graded stakes winner for her young sire, Outwork, was bred in Kentucky by Red Cloak Farm. She was purchased for $40,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Eastern Fall Yearling Sales in Maryland in October 2021 by the WellSpring Stables of Robert and Laura Vukovich of New Jersey and Florida. Leave No Trace earned $598,650 from her four starts at 2. Following the Breeders’ Cup, she was given six weeks’ down time before returning to training in late December at Serpe’s winter base at Gulfstream Park in Florida. Serpe said an early-season campaign likely will begin at Gulfstream, with hopes of the Ashland at Keeneland and the Longines Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs to follow. 46 The 52nd Annual Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. By Marty McGee Just how good was Meditate in 2022? The gray Irish-bred filly is one of three finalists for a divisional Eclipse Award despite many voters believing she began with two strikes against her: She raced just once in North America, and she’s a turf specialist in what is traditionally a category won by dirt runners. Those perceived deficiencies aside, Meditate was just too impressive in her first season of racing to ignore her altogether. Based in Ireland with her iconic trainer, Aidan O’Brien, Meditate racked up five wins and two seconds from seven starts in a season capped by a breathtaking score in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf on Nov. 4 at Keeneland. Unveiled by O’Brien in an April 10 maiden dash at The Curragh, Meditate got things under way with a handy 3 1/4-length triumph under Ryan Moore, who would ride her in all but one of her starts. That exception came in her next start in May, when she won the Group 3 Fillies Sprint at Naas in Ireland under Wayne Lordan. Two more victories in group events for 2-year-old fillies followed, those being the Group 3 Albany at the Royal Ascot meet in June and the Group 2 Debutante back at The Curragh in August. Both of those triumphs came with strong finishes after attending all the pace. Her unbeaten streak then came to an end with runner-up finishes in back-to-back Group 1 events less than two weeks apart. Bet down to even-money in the Sept. 11 Moyglare Stud at The Curragh, she was second to Tahiyra in a solid effort that was followed by a second to Lezoo as the 8-5 choice in the Sept. 24 Cheveley Park at Newmarket. Then came her sterling performance in her first attempt going as far as a mile in the two-turn Juvenile Fillies Turf. Rating kindly for Moore through the opening five furlongs while staying covered up, Meditate began picking off rivals with ease before launching a sensational stretch run, finishing the one-mile distance in 1:35.38 while prevailing by 2 1/2 lengths as the 2-1 favorite in a full gate of 14. “The race was over a furlong and a half out,” Moore said afterward. “I felt like she had a lot left. She’s probably just a level above the rest of the others.” Meditate was sired by the hot young stallion No Nay Never and produced by Pembina, by Dalakhani. She was bred in Ireland by Lynch-Bages and Rhinestone Bloodstock and is owned by the powerhouse Coolmore partnership of Michael Tabor, Susan Magnier, Derrick Smith, and Westerberg, the racing operation of Georg von Opel. Meditate ended her season with earnings of $862,341. As expected, she is getting much of the winter off at Ballydoyle Stables in County Tipperary ahead of plans to bring her back in the top European races for 3-year-old fillies in 2023. 48 The 52nd Annual Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. By Marty McGee Unmistakable class and uncommon versatility were hallmarks in a remarkable first season for Wonder Wheel. “She’s just a top filly,” her trainer, Mark Casse, said after the daughter of uber-sire Into Mischief capped a 4-for-5 year by rallying to win the NetJets Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. “For her to overcome what she did, I think that just shows what a good horse she is.” Purchased at the 2021 Keeneland September yearling sale for $275,000 by the D.J. Stable of Leonard Green and family, Wonder Wheel began breezing for Casse at his Ocala farm in March. Shipped to Keeneland, then Churchill Downs, the dark bay filly made an auspicious debut on June 3, winning a 5 1/2-furlong maiden-special by 2 1/4 lengths. She then followed that with a front-running, 6 3/4-length score in the July 4 Debutante at Churchill. “That’s when we really knew we might have something,” said Casse. After staying put at Churchill for a few weeks, Wonder Wheel then joined up with Casse at Saratoga, where she made her next start on closing weekend of the summer meet, finishing second as the 7-5 favorite to Leave No Trace in the Grade 1 Spinaway in what would become the only blemish on her record to date. She then rebounded with a wire-to-wire triumph in her first two-turn race, the Grade 1 Alcibiades on opening day of the Keeneland fall meet, gamely holding off a late surge by Chop Chop in prevailing by a nose in a three-way photo in a full field of 14. Four weeks later came the coup de grace. Away just a bit tardily in a field of 13 in the Grade 1 BC Juvenile Fillies at Keeneland, Wonder Wheel found herself toward the rear of the pack into the first turn and all the way down the backstretch of the 1 1/16-mile race. Tyler Gaffalione, who rode the filly in all five starts, did not panic, as Wonder Wheel zipped past most of the field while saving ground in the final turn, suddenly producing herself for a winning drive. She drew off to win by three lengths, with Gaffalione mostly waving his whip at his mount down the lane, giving the jockey his first Breeders’ Cup victory after 35 failed attempts. “It means the world to me,” Gaffalione said afterward. Wonder Wheel was bred in Kentucky by Three Chimneys Farm and Clearsky Farms. By Into Mischief, once again the leading sire in North America in 2022, she was produced by Wonder Gal, a daughter of Tiz Wonderful. She finished the year with $1,550,725 in earnings for the Greens, who in 2018 won the Eclipse in this division with Jaywalk. After a short break following the Breeders’ Cup, Wonder Wheel has returned to training in Ocala, with “two or three preps, to be determined,” said Casse, ultimately aiming for the May 5 Longines Kentucky Oaks at Churchill.
