50 The 52nd Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. OWNER FINALISTS By Nicole Russo Peter Brant was a prominent owner and breeder through the 1970s and 1980s before backing away from the sport in the 1990s, focusing on the White Birch Paper Company he runs and also pursuing his other equestrian passion, polo. A few years ago, he decided to dive back in to Thoroughbred racing, breeding, and sales, and quickly made headlines as a finalist for the Eclipse Award for outstanding owner multiple times. Since his return, Brant has campaigned Eclipse Award champions Sistercharlie and Uni, as well as top runners including Grade 1 winners Blowout, Dunbar Road, Fog of War, and Raging Bull. He added to that haul in 2022, with his stable campaigning runners such as Regal Glory, who rewarded his decision to keep her in training one more season with three Grade 1 wins, and In Italian, a twotime Grade 1 winner who was second in the Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf. He also raced Grade 1 winners Bleecker Street, Gina Romantica, and Rougir as he dominated the female turf division, and owned a piece of multiple Grade 1 winner Jack Christopher. Brant finished third on the continent by earnings in 2022. He also finished second to the Godolphin operation by both North American graded stakes wins, 23 to 18, and Grade 1 wins, 13 to 7. PETER BRANT By Nicole Russo Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum’s international Godolphin operation is a finalist for both the Eclipse Award for outstanding owner and outstanding breeder, looking to sweep both categories for the second year in a row. Godolphin or its Darley banner – the brand which it stands its stallions under – has won or tied for the Eclipse for outstanding owner five times, and has been honored as outstanding breeder twice. Godolphin again led North American owners by earnings in 2022, with $16,343,067; by graded stakes wins, with 23 to 18 for Peter Brant; and by Grade 1 wins, with 13 to seven for Brant. The operation put a huge exclamation point on its season, with four homebred Breeders’ Cup winners, as Modern Games earned his second Breeders’ Cup win, taking the FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile; Rebel’s Romance took the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf; the popular Cody’s Wish won the Big Ass Fans Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile in what has been lauded as one of the feel-good stories of the year; and Mischief Magic won the Juvenile Turf Sprint. Modern Games and Cody’s Wish won additional Grade 1 races in North America, taking the Ricoh Woodbine Mile and Forego Stakes, respectively. Godolphin’s other major victories in North America included multiple Grade 1 scores for both the European shipper Nations Pride and the Kentucky-based Santin, as well as Grade 1 victories earned by Matareya, Mysterious Night, Proxy, and Speaker’s Corner. GODOLPHIN By Nicole Russo Seth Klarman’s Klaravich Stables enjoyed another consistent year in 2022, with accomplishments highlighted by another judiciously managed American classic winner to again place the operation among the divisional Eclipse Award finalists. Klarman, 65 and a native of Massachusetts, was known for a long ownership partnership with William Lawrence, with whom he campaigned 2019 Horse of the Year Bricks and Mortar. The duo owned the Eclipse as outstanding owner for that season. However, Lawrence was in the process of exiting the business, and Klarman kept on. This spring, Klarman owned the talented colt Early Voting. Despite having the points to contest the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve, Klarman and trainer Chad Brown resisted that temptation with their lightly raced colt and instead targeted the Preakness Stakes, a strategy that had resulted in Cloud Computing’s victory in the 2017 edition of the classic race. That move again paid off in 2022, as Early Voting bested favored Epicenter to carry Klarman’s silks to a second Preakness victory. Klarman’s other top runners in 2022 included McKulick, who won the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks Invitational, and graded stakes winners Consumer Spending, Faith in Humanity, Gerrymander, Highly Motivated, Search Results, and Technical Analysis. Klarman finished second to Godolphin on the North American earnings leaderboard, despite having nearly 100 fewer starts than that massive operation. He was third in the nation by graded stakes victories. KLARAVICH STABLES

52 The 52nd Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. BREEDER FINALISTS By Nicole Russo Summer Wind Farm, located in Georgetown, Ky., is the nom de course of Jane Lyon, who bred the dazzling Flightline and was along for the ride as part of his ownership group. Lyon, a native of Little Rock, Ark., and her late husband Frank Lyon purchased the Summer Wind property in 1995. At the time, they had two geldings, neither a Thoroughbred. Lyon has grown the farm to more than 1,000 acres and has assembled a stellar broodmare band. Flightline, by Tapit and out of Grade 3 winner Feathered, was ticketed for the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga selected yearling sale with the Lane’s End consignment, standard practice for many of the Summer Wind yearlings. Lyon made it known she would be interested in retaining a share, and the group of Hronis Racing, the Lane’s End-affiliated Woodford Racing, West Point Thoroughbreds, and Siena Farm formed to race the colt, who went through the ring for $1 million. Summer Wind houses Littleprincessemma, the dam of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. Since purchasing her in 2014, Lyon has campaigned Grade 1 winner Chasing Yesterday out of the mare. The farm also has bred and raised Eclipse Award champion Game Winner, Grade 1/ Group 1 winners McKinzie, Moonshine Memories, and Mozu Ascot. Summer Wind houses several pensioned mares and retired runners, and Lyon has also written two children’s books about rescued racehorses – “Skipingo Home: A Thoroughbred’s Second Chance” and “Primerica: A Home for the Brave” – the profits from which have benefited Thoroughbred rescue organizations. SUMMER WIND FARM By Nicole Russo The influence of Barbara Banke’s Stonestreet Farm was all over the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff, one of the most exciting races of the championship weekend. Malathaat, last year’s Eclipse Award champion 3-year-old filly, won by a pair of noses over Blue Stripe and Clairiere. Malathaat and Clairiere, both daughters of former Stonestreet colorbearer Curlin, were raised in the same barn, and the outfit sold Malathaat as a yearling, while it campaigns multiple Grade 1 winner Clairiere as a homebred. Another Stonestreet graduate, the bred-and-sold Goodnight Olive, gave the farm another 2022 Breeders’ Cup victory, taking the Filly & Mare Sprint. Stonestreet also campaigned homebred Grade 1 winner Pauline’s Pearl, a particularly sentimental runner for Banke. The filly is out of Grade 1 winner Hot Dixie Chick, the first runner Banke campaigned in her own name, and is named after the owner’s mother. Overall, Stonestreet finished second to Godolphin on the North American breeders list by both graded stakes wins, 20 to 14, and by Grade 1 wins, 12 to 7. It also was third by earnings behind Godolphin and Calumet Farm. In addition to Curlin, who led the nation by Grade 1 winners in 2022, several Stonestreet colorbearers are prominent Kentucky stallions – including homebred Good Magic, a son of Curlin who was among the leading freshman sires of 2022. Stonestreet is a prominent supporter of Thoroughbred aftercare organizations, including New Vocations, through which several of its former runners have been adopted out. STONESTREET THOROUGHBRED HOLDINGS GODOLPHIN By Nicole Russo Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum’s international Godolphin operation is a finalist for both the Eclipse Award for outstanding owner and breeder, looking to sweep both categories for the second year in a row. Godolphin or its Darley banner – the brand which it stands its stallions under – has won or tied for the Eclipse for outstanding owner five previous times, and has been honored as outstanding breeder twice. Godolphin led North American breeders by earnings, graded stakes wins, and Grade 1 wins in 2022. The operation put a huge exclamation point on that season, with four homebred Breeders’ Cup winners, as Modern Games earned his second Breeders’ Cup win in the Fan Duel Breeders’ Cup Mile; Rebel’s Romance took the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf; the popular Cody’s Wish won the Big Ass Fans Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile in what has been lauded as one of the feel-good stories of the year; and Mischief Magic won the Juvenile Turf Sprint. Modern Games and Rebel’s Romance are both by Dubawi, who has emerged as Europe’s leading sire to anchor the Darley stallion roster on that continent, while Mischief Magic is by Darley Australia resident Exceed And Excel. Godolphin’s other major victories in North America included Grade 1 scores by Matareya, Mysterious Night, Nations Pride, Proxy, Santin, and Speaker’s Corner. Nations Pride is by Darley European stallion Teofilo, while Speaker’s Corner is by Street Sense, who stands on the Kentucky roster. Godolphin both houses pensioners worldwide and adopts out former runners via its Godolphin Lifetime Care program.

54 The 52nd Annual Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. By Matt Hegarty The Eclipse Special Award is not awarded every year, reserved for those organizations or individuals whose contributions to racing do not neatly fit into an existing category of the Eclipse Awards. Jay Privman, this year’s Special Award recipient, is being recognized for excellence in a career encompassing print, television, and radio journalism as well as multi-decades-long service to the industry. The designation sits like a Luxardo cherry atop an illustrious 41-year Turf writing career, which came to an end last fall with his retirement. Privman, who was the national correspondent for Daily Racing Form for the past 24 years, was a reporter’s reporter and a writer’s writer, filling his stories with bare facts, dry wit, and sophisticated analysis, and he did all that to every editor’s delight – by filing consistently clean copy well before deadline. In addition to his distinguished career in turf writing, Privman also covered horse racing on television for CBS, ESPN, Fox, NBC, and NBCSN. Privman also was the longtime co-host of the radio show “Thoroughbred Los Angeles” on KLAA-AM 830. Privman received a multitude of awards during his career, and he was named to the Joe Hirsch Media Roll of Honor at the National Museum of Racing in 2021. That being said, this is the first Eclipse Award for Privman – despite being one of the most well-respected and recognizable names in Turf writing for decades. Privman was notified of the award by Steven Crist, the former columnist, handicapper, and publisher of Daily Racing Form, who along with Andrew Beyer was given an Eclipse Award of Merit in 2016. Crist and a group of investors purchased Daily Racing Form in 1998, and one of the first calls Crist made was to Privman, who had worked for Crist previously at the Racing Times, a short-lived competitor to the Form. “I really appreciated getting the call from Steve,” Privman said. “He was instrumental to my career, both at the Racing Times and the Racing Form.” Privman announced his retirement during the summer Del Mar meet in 2022. A year earlier, he had to juggle his writing assignments with his treatments for bladder cancer. In 2020, he missed covering the Triple Crown events live because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Privman, who is now cancer free, said that he intended to retire earlier, but he needed to go out on a high note. He chose the Del Mar summer meet as his last hurrah. One of the last stories he filed documented Flightline’s astounding Pacific Classic win, a performance that many have called one of the most dominant of the past 40 years. Privman witnessed and chronicled nearly all of them. He recalled his first assignment: Spectacular Bid’s 1980 Malibu Stakes at Santa Anita. Spectacular Bid won by five lengths in 1:20 flat, a track record. “Those are some pretty good bookends,” Privman said. Jay P rivman SPECIAL AWARD Barbara D. 56 The 52nd Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. JOCKEY FINALISTS By Mary Rampellini Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. is in the midst of an outstanding riding career as a three-time winner of the Eclipse Award. And this past year might have been his best ever in the saddle. Ortiz set new standards for North American earnings and stakes victories by a jockey in a single season, racked up three Breeders’ Cup wins, captured the Belmont Stakes, and won the Pegasus World Cup Invitational. For his accomplishments, Ortiz is an Eclipse Award finalist for outstanding jockey of 2022. Ortiz, a 29-year-old native of Puerto Rico, compiled mount earnings of $37,075,772, which trumped the North American record of $34.1 million he set in 2019. Ortiz also led all riders in wins in 2022 with 325 from 1,363 mounts. He captured 80 stakes races on the year to eclipse the record of 76 that the late Garrett Gomez established in 2007. Of his stakes wins, Ortiz registered 50 of them in graded races, which topped all jockeys in 2022. He also won more Grade 1 races than his peers, with 20. Those victories included Mo Donegal in the Belmont Stakes, Forte in the FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, Elite Power in the Qatar Racing Breeders’ Cup Sprint, Goodnight Olive in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, Life Is Good in the Pegasus World Cup Invitational, and Colonel Liam in the Pegasus World Cup Invitational Turf. IRAD ORTIZ JR. By Mary Rampellini Jockey Flavien Prat was one of the most accomplished riders of 2022, but his year could be summed up by one horse: Flightline. Prat was the regular rider of the frontrunner for Horse of the Year. He guided Flightline to victories in the $6 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland, the Hill ‘n Dale Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park, and the TVG Pacific Classic at Del Mar. The success helped push Prat’s mount earnings for 2022 to $29,832,252, secondbest in North America. Overall, the rider won 236 races from 1,013 starts, with 42 of his victories coming in graded stakes. Prat also won six races on a single card at two different tracks, Santa Anita and Del Mar. For his record, the 30-year-old native of France is an Eclipse Award finalist for champion jockey of 2022. Flightline caused a stir in September, when he won the Pacific Classic by 19 1/4 lengths. For the effort, the horse earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 126. “When we hit the three-eighths pole and I gave him his head, he reacted the right way and went forward, but I didn’t really expect to open up so much.” Prat told Daily Racing Form. “First time a mile and a quarter, I wanted to make sure I keep him busy all the way to the eighth pole, but the separation was amazing.” Some of Prat’s other Grade 1 winners last year were As Time Goes By, Blazing Sevens, Regal Glory, and Gina Romantica. FLAVIEN PRAT By Mary Rampellini Joel Rosario was the Eclipse Award winner as outstanding jockey of 2021, and he’s made a significant case to defend his title for 2022. Rosario was the regular rider on Jackie’s Warrior, Epicenter, Clairiere, and In Italian last year, and all are finalists for Eclipse Awards. They helped lift Rosario to $29,250,139 in mount earnings for 2022, which ranked third among all riders in North America. The 37-year-old native of the Domincan Republic won 185 races from 915 starts last year, with 39 of his wins coming in graded races. Epicenter established himself as one of the elite members of the 3-year-old class, with Rosario guiding him to victories in the Runhappy Travers, Louisiana Derby, Risen Star, and Jim Dandy. The pair also finished second in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. Rosario in July celebrated a Saratoga record with Jackie’s Warrior, who became the first horse to win a Grade 1 race for three consecutive years at the historic track. Rosario has been the regular rider of Jackie’s Warrior since he was 2. “He’s a special horse,” Rosario told Daily Racing Form after the Vanderbilt. “These horses don’t come along every day, and he’s just incredible. He’s always there for me. I know when I ask him to go, he’s there for me.” Rosario’s list of Grade 1 wins also included the Ogden Phipps with Clairiere and the First Lady and Diana with In Italian. JOEL ROSARIO

58 The 52nd Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. APPRENTICE JOCKEY FINALISTS By Mary Rampellini Maryland’s rich tradition of cultivating top apprentice riders lived on last year through Jeiron Barbosa. The 19-year-old native of Puerto Rico won three meet titles in Maryland and also ranked second in wins and earnings among all apprentice riders in North America in 2022. The accomplishments have made Barbosa an Eclipse Award finalist for outstanding apprentice jockey of 2022. He hopes to add his name to a long list of Eclipse Awardwinning apprentices from the Maryland circuit, including Hall of Famers Chris McCarron and Kent Desormeaux, and 2018 winner Wes Hamilton. Barbosa won a total of 184 races from 1,033 starts in 2022. His mounts earned $5,685,182. Barbosa’s list of winners included a pair of stakes victories, with Music Amore in the $100,000 Searching on Aug. 6 at Laurel Park and Titoschangedmyluck in the $103,000 Kenswick on Aug. 9 at Colonial Downs. Barbosa’s titles came during the spring and fall meets at Laurel Park and the fall season at Pimlico Race Course. The fall title at Laurel was shared with journeyman Angel Cruz, a close family friend from who has been a mentor to Barbosa. “It feels great to share the title with my brother,” Cruz said. “I brought him here. I was his mentor coming from Puerto Rico. Not knowing English, coming here to conquer like he did is a great accomplishment.” Barbosa, whose first wins came in Puerto Rico, recorded his initial stateside win on March 25 at Laurel. JEIRON BARBOSA By Mary Rampellini A breakout year in Louisiana has led to Vicente Del-Cid being named a finalist for the Eclipse Award for outstanding apprentice jockey of 2022. The 21-year-old native of Guatemala led all apprentice riders in wins last year with 246 from 1,122 starts. Del-Cid also ranked third in mount earnings, with $4,209,468. But the success was hardly limited to his peer group of fellow rookies. Del-Cid closed 2022 as the second-leading rider in North America in wins, trailing only journeyman Irad Ortiz Jr. Del-Cid maintained his position even after the final day of his apprentice allowance on Nov. 12. Overall, the rider won 277 races in 2022. “The horses are the ones that made me want to ride,” Del-Cid said through a translator in a September interview with Daily Racing Form. Del-Cid’s ascent began in earnest during last year’s Evangeline Downs meet in Opelousas, La. He captured the title with 124 wins from 500 starts, during a season that ran from April to August. Del-Cid came to the United States in 2019. He galloped horses for two years before launching his riding career at the suggestion of top Louisiana-based jockey Joel Dominguez. Del-Cid won his first race on Oct. 21, 2021, at Delta Downs in Vinton, La. He’s since made himself quite at home in the winner’s circle. VICENTE DEL-CID By Mary Rampellini Jose Antonio Gomez has made a name for himself on the tough New York circuit in his first full year of riding, and for his successful rookie season he is an Eclipse Award finalist for outstanding apprentice jockey of 2022. Gomez led all North American-based apprentice jockeys in mount earnings last year, with $7,635,366. Overall, he won 152 races from 1,312 starts. Gomez won two stakes, taking a New York Stallion Stakes series race with Golden Rocket in August at Saratoga and the John J. Reilly Handicap with Royal Urn in May at Monmouth Park. Trainer Kelly Breen put Gomez on both his first stakes winner in Royal Urn and his first career winner, Top Gun Tommy. Gomez and Top Gun Tommy won a $50,000 starter allowance on Oct. 28, 2021, at Belmont Park. A little more than a month later, the young rider, who had spent time galloping for Breen, set up shop in New York. “Sometimes when you’re starting out you might feel down because you’re not as good as you want to be, but you keep working,” Gomez told Daily Racing Form shortly after arriving in New York. “That’s what I’m trying to do, keep working and, hopefully, we’ll keep on winning some races.” By year’s end, the 22-year-old native of Michigan had established himself as one of the top young riders in North America. The 52nd Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. 62 TRAINER FINALISTS By Marcus Hersh During 2022, four North American trainers tied for 126th in seasonal wins, each notching 51 winners. Not a bad year at all. Now, consider Chad Brown. He, too, had 51 winners – just counting graded stakes. It’s a remarkable tally, and in recent seasons only Brown has put up comparable numbers of graded stakes wins in a year, landing 53 in 2019 and 46 in 2018. In 2021, Todd Pletcher led the way with 35 graded wins. Brown was named champion trainer in 2016-19, and he’s the front-runner to win his fifth Eclipse following a shining performance on the track last year. Brown, 44, from the start of the year appeared intently focused on wiping away a 2021 season slightly below par by his world-class standards. Brown boosted his annual stable earnings from about $22.2 million in 2021 to more than $31 million last year, leading all trainers. His 244 wins were fourth-most in North America, and Brown’s 26 percent strike rate was highest among the top 10 trainers by wins. Brown sent out third-place Kentucky Derby finisher Zandon and two weeks later won the Preakness with Early Voting. He trained crack 3-year-old sprinter-miler Jack Christopher and has Goodnight Olive, a leading candidate to be champion female sprinter. But, as usual, much of Brown’s green was earned on grass, with fillies and mares at the vanguard. Multiple Grade 1 winners Regal Glory and In Italian led that wing of the stable, but a bevy of other runners helped Brown utterly dominate the division. Wins, graded stakes wins, earnings, win-percentage – no matter how you push around the stats, you’re staring at another Eclipse-caliber year for Chad Brown. By Marcus Hersh Eclipse Awards for trainers come in waves, with the same person earning championship honors several years in a row. Since 1976, there have been a trio of three-peats and three four-peats. Brad Cox, Eclipse winner in 2020 and 2021, is the most recent trainer to win the award in consecutive years. Typically, these flurries of championships are followed by a trip down the other side of the peak. Some of the three- and four-time winners have come back years later to earn another championship, but only Todd Pletcher has multiple consecutive years of training Eclipses. Pletcher four-peated from 2004-07, then won two more in 2013-14. He’s not done yet. Pletcher had a great 2022, posting a career-best mark in earnings, nearly $30.5 million, while winning 223 races, fifthmost in North America. His stable, based in New York, Florida, and Kentucky, had high-level performers in many divisions, and Pletcher is likely to top all trainers with three 2022 champions. Nest is the favorite to be champion 3-year-old filly, while Forte is likely to be named champion 2-year-old male and Malathaat is favored to earn championship honors as the season’s leading older female. Life Is Good is unlikely to win an Eclipse, not in the year of Flightline, but could be a finalist for Horse of the Year. At 55, Pletcher has begun his 27th year training. The Aqueduct string hums through the winter, and Pletcher will be sending a steady stream of winners to Gulfstream and Tampa from his Florida base at Palm Beach Downs. The stable runs like clockwork, never missing a beat – angling for a record eighth Eclipse. TODD PLETCHER By Marcus Hersh At 57, Steve Asmussen is slowing down. During 2022, his far-flung racing stable started a mere 2,155 horses. Sure, that’s about 350 more than the next-highest total for a North American trainer and about 750 more than the third highest, but it’s also 272 fewer than Asmussen ran during 2021, and a pittance compared to Asmussen’s busiest year, 2008, when he had 3,002 starters. In 2008, Asmussen had 650 winners. During 2022? Just 382. Imagine it – more than one winner a day all year and it works out to be 268 fewer than your high-water mark. But that’s Steve Asmussen, Hall of Famer, win machine. As of Jan. 5, he was closing hard on 10,000 career winners, with 9,966 already in the books. Asmussen won 10 more races during 2022 than Karl Broberg, the second-leading trainer. Broberg’s stock banked $7.8 million, Asmussen’s $28.6 million. That’s called playing on a different level. And that’s Asmussen’s uniqueness: He plays on all levels. Asmussen won 98 claiming races, along with 95 maiden special weights, 90 allowance races, 34 ungraded stakes, and 22 graded races. The totals are astronomical, the stable performance metronomical. He has an 18 percent strike rate during 2022, which is right in line with the last 17 years: Since 2005, Asmussen’s win rate has been from 17 percent to 22 percent. And this percentage – 50. There exist Eclipse Awards in eight dirt categories and Asmussen trained finalists in half of them: Clairiere, Echo Zulu, Epicenter, and Jackie’s Warrior. No wonder the man himself is one of three who could be 2022’s champion trainer. CHAD BROWN STEVE ASMUSSEN

64 The 52nd Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. By Brad Free Oddly enough, two of the more memorable performances by Nest in 2022 came in successive races in which she finished second. A tough trip cost her in the Kentucky Oaks, and the Belmont Stakes runner-up finish against boys reinvigorated her. Before, after, and including second-place finishes in the Oaks and Belmont, Nest compiled an exceptional campaign. She won five races, including three Grade 1s, to emerge as a finalist for the Eclipse Award as outstanding 3-year-old filly of 2022. Nest began the year with the right tools. Sired by Curlin, her 2021 juvenile campaign included a victory in the Grade 2 Demoiselle at Aqueduct; her pedigree hinted better ahead. Her full brother Idol had won the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap as a 4-year-old. Todd Pletcher trains Nest for owners Eclipse Thoroughbreds, Mike Repole, and Michael House. She was bred by Ashview Farm and Colts Neck Stables. Purchased for $350,000 at the 2019 Keeneland September sale, Nest began her 3-year-old season in February, odds-on in the Suncoast Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs. She won by six lengths over a modest field. Two months later in the Grade 1 Central Bank Ashland on a wetfast track at Keeneland, Nest romped by 8 1/4 lengths to emerge as likely favorite for the Longines Kentucky Oaks. Racing luck was not in her favor at Churchill Downs. Nest and regular rider Irad Ortiz Jr. got stalled behind rivals at the quarter pole and had to wait for room at a critical stage. By the time Nest got clear, Secret Oath had gotten the jump. Nest finished second by two lengths. Tough trip. Pletcher, who won the 2007 Belmont Stakes with the filly Rags to Riches, was eager to give the filly Nest a shot in the Belmont. She stumbled at the break and finished second behind stablemate Mo Donegal. Although the mile and a half Belmont is a demanding race, Nest thrived. “I don’t think I’ve ever had a horse bounce out of the Belmont as well as she did,” Pletcher said afterward. “Sometimes [the Belmont] can be a taxing race. In her case, it seemed to propel her forward.” Nest subsequently rattled off blowout wins in the Grade 1 Coaching Club America Oaks, Grade 1 Alabama, and Grade 2 Beldame in her first start against older. Prior to her season finale in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff, Pletcher talked about Nest as if describing a turf horse. “What’s really impressive is the turn of foot she can deliver on the dirt, which you don’t always see,” he said. “She’s got a turn of foot. She can accelerate. At the top of the stretch, she just kind of blows everyone away.” Nest ended her campaign finishing fourth as the favorite in the BC Distaff at Keeneland, the first time in her career she finished out of the top three. In 2022 at age 3, Nest won five races and $1,768,050 from eight starts. 68 The 52nd Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. By Brad Free Secret Oath blossomed in winter at Oaklawn Park and was blanketed by lilies in spring at Churchill Downs. During an enterprising nine-start campaign, Secret Oath ducked no one, raced outside her division twice against colts, won three races including the Grade 1 Longines Kentucky Oaks, placed in four other Grade 1s, and earned $1,603,250. Trainer D. Wayne Lukas orchestrated the campaign of Secret Oath, Eclipse Award finalist as outstanding 3-year-old filly of 2022. Secret Oath was sired by Arrogate, and her dam is Absinthe Minded, a multiple stakes winner Lukas trained for the same Lexington, Ky.-based owner-breeders as Secret Oath – Briland Farm operators Rob and Stacy Mitchell. Secret Oath began 2022 with a growing reputation based on her final start as a 2-year-old in a New Year’s Eve allowance at Oaklawn. She won by more than eight lengths and earned a 93 Beyer Speed Figure, second-highest of 2021 by a juvenile filly. The challenge for her 3-year-old campaign was to reproduce the highly rated allowance win versus better company. She was up to the task. Odds-on in the Martha Washington Stakes in January, Secret Oath and jockey Luis Contreras rallied from behind to win by more than seven lengths. A month later at Oaklawn, she did it again. Secret Oath won the Grade 3 Honeybee in another romp, again by more than seven lengths. Secret Oath had become one of the country’s most exciting fillies and a top 3-year-old irrespective of gender. Lukas, never shy to start fillies against colts, entered Secret Oath in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby. She started as the 7-5 favorite. An imperfect start compromised Secret Oath, who uncorked a wide rally on the far turn before she flattened out and finished third. It was an excellent effort, but the Kentucky Oaks would be her next start, rather than the Derby. New rider Luis Saez took over and gave Secret Oath a perfect trip rallying from eighth. While the favorite Nest got stuck in traffic, Secret Oath got first run, opened up, and won the Kentucky Oaks by two lengths. Although she did not win any of her final five starts of 2022, Secret Oath continued to run well. She met colts again in the Preakness and finished fourth. In summer at Saratoga, she finished second in a pair of Grade 1s won by Nest – the Coaching Club American Oaks and the Alabama. After finishing third in the Grade 1 Cotillion at Parx Racing, Secret Oath ended her 2022 campaign with a fifth-place finish in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Keeneland. She was initially slated to be sold at auction following the Breeders’ Cup, but was withdrawn from the sale. Secret Oath will race for Lukas and the Mitchells as a 4-yearold filly in 2023. She has won 5 of 13 starts; her $1,768,417 career earnings total is the highest by a progeny of the late sire Arrogate. 70 The 52nd Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. By Brad Free A European filly who raced only once in North America left a lasting impression in 2022. Tuesday, whose win in the Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf capped a successful international campaign and ultimately capped her career, is an Eclipse Award finalist as outstanding 3-year-old filly. Aidan O’Brien trains Tuesday, bred in Ireland by Coolmore and owned by a Coolmore partnership that includes Westerberg Limited, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith. A highprofile pedigree gave Tuesday a license to be a top-class racing filly, and she delivered in a 2022 campaign that included a Group 1 win in England prior to her Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup victory at Keeneland. Sired by Galileo, Tuesday was produced by Lillie Langtry, a 2010 multiple Group 1 winner trained by O’Brien and owned by Magnier, Tabor, and Smith. Lillie Langtry retired from racing in 2010 and became a top producer. Her second foal was Minding, a Galileo filly who won six Group 1 races. Perhaps influenced by the success of Minding, Coolmore bred Lillie Langtry back to Galileo in 2018. The result was Tuesday, full sister to Minding, foaled late in the season on June 3, 2019. Ryan Moore rode Tuesday to a runner-up finish in her career debut as a 2-year-old in June 2021; she did not race again until May 2022, well short of her true 3-year-old birthday. Moore was aboard Tuesday when she won a 17-runner maiden race in Ireland. By then, O’Brien and the filly’s owners believed she was special. Off the maiden-win comeback in her second start, Tuesday jumped in class for the Group 1 English 1000 Guineas and finished third under Frankie Dettori. Reunited with Moore in her next four starts, Tuesday finished second in the Irish 1000 Guineas, followed by an upset victory in the Group 1 Epsom Oaks on June 3, the day she actually turned 3. In her last four starts overseas, Tuesday had a runner-up finish in the Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks in summer and finished off the board in three Group 1’s. But she was running well enough to take a shot at the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf, a race O’Brien had considered throughout her campaign. A better-than-looked sixth in the Group 1 Prix de l ’Opera was her final start in Europe, and she shipped to Kentucky for the Breeders’ Cup. Third choice in the betting at 4.19-1, Tuesday was given a masterful ride by Moore. They saved ground midpack, angled outside for the drive, powered home, and ran past front-runner In Italian to win by a length in 1:51.88. It was a Keeneland course record at the seldom-used turf distance of 1 3/16 miles. Tuesday was retired following the Breeders’ Cup. Plans call for her to be bred to Justify. Tuesday retires having won three races and $1,828,827 from 10 starts. 72 The 52nd Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. By Marcus Hersh Epicenter probably was the best dirt-route 3-year-old to race in North America during 2022, and the favorite to be crowned a champion in the 3-year-old male division. Ironically, he was the best horse in the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve. It was a race Epicenter lost, his second-place finish leaving the door ajar for one of the other two Eclipse Award finalists, Modern Games and Taiba, to sneak through it. Saying a horse was “best” in a race he didn’t win can carry a whiff of arrogance, but in this case, it absolutely feels right. The 2022 Derby was the fastest-paced renewal in years, Epicenter a close fifth after a half-mile in a brutal 45.36 seconds. He made his move around the turn, the tempo still enervating, and was on the way to victory at the eighth pole when 80-1 shot Rich Strike cruised up the inside and ran Epicenter down. Rich Strike had been 18th after six furlongs, saving his energy; the four horses in front of Epicenter at that stage finished between 10th and 20th. A losing race that ought to have been a winning one. After a hot pace undid him in the Derby, Epicenter lost the Preakness in great part because of a slow pace. Squeezed back at the start, Epicenter and regular rider Joel Rosario found themselves eighth of nine through the early and middle stages. Closing into tepid splits, they simply could not reel in pace-advantaged Early Voting. Two Triple Crown defeats were tough – the Derby especially so for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen, still seeking his first win in it. But good losses count, too, in championship consideration, and along with his three second-place finishes in 2022, Epicenter notched four wins. After taking a loss to longshot Call Me Midnight, in the Lecomte Stakes to start his season, Epicenter won the Risen Star by 2 3/4 lengths and the $1 million TwinSpires.com Louisiana Derby by 2 1/2 lengths, geared down late in both races. Freshened following the Preakness, he ran solidly capturing the Jim Dandy before reaching his zenith, crushing two capable colts, Cyberknife and Zandon, to win the Runhappy Travers by 5 1/2 lengths. The Travers showed Epicenter at his best. With guidance from a great horseman and his staff, a one-time front-runner wrapped his brain around the act and art of racing, learning to rate and ration his speed, saving the best part of his race for last – as he did in the Travers. Bred by Westwind Farm, Epicenter raced for Ron Winchell’s Winchell Thoroughbreds, who purchased the son of Not This Time and Silent Candy, by Candy Ride, for $260,000 at the 2020 Keeneland September sale. And while it’s surely not always the grand-looking Thoroughbreds that prove the fastest ones, Epicenter has looks to rival his talent. Robust, statuesque, strong-willed, and dominant yet manageable, Epicenter was Asmussen’s best hope to win a Derby because, the trainer said, this was a colt who could take so much more during morning exercise than any of the others he’d brought to the race. Epicenter’s racing career ended at a nadir. The colt pulled up with an injury on the backstretch of the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic. Epicenter will stand stud in 2023 at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud. But don’t think of the Classic. Remember the Travers, a special horse at the peak of his powers. 74 The 52nd Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. By Marcus Hersh It takes an unusually good turf horse to be considered for 3-yearold male championship honors. Dirt races with a particular focus on the Triple Crown form the division’s spine. Modern Games isn’t just a turf horse, he’s a turf horse based in England, but he was so good in two 2022 North American starts that here he stands, one of three 3-year-olds who could be crowned champion, as well as being a finalist for male turf champion. Modern Games was the best 2-year-old of 2021 to run a turf race in North America, posting a sharp tally in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Del Mar, under unusual circumstances. Accidentally taken out of parimutuel racing because of a mistaken scratch behind the starting gate, Modern Games raced for purse money only at Del Mar and showed he occupied a different class than the American grass horses. The same held true late last summer and fall. A Godolphin homebred trained at Moulton Paddocks in England by Charlie Appleby, whose shippers to North America have been running wild for years now, Modern Games began his season winning a European classic, the French 2000 Guineas over a one-turn mile at Longchamp. Given a chance to stretch his distance capabilities going 1 5/16 miles in the French Derby, Modern Games finished a plucky third of 15, beaten more than five lengths by high-class Vadeni while confirming his connections’ belief that the colt was a miler. Cut back to seven furlongs in the Prix Jean Prat, Modern Games turned in his lone flat run of the year, finishing fifth, but less than three weeks later, on July 27, on a date when American 3-year-olds still were months away from facing their elders, Modern Games ran second over a mile in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes, beaten only by Europe’s best miler, 4-year-old Baaeed. All year, Godolphin and Appleby had plotted further overseas adventure for Modern Games, a homebred by Dubawi out of Modern Ideals, by New Approach. The first came Sept. 17 in the Grade 1 Ricoh Woodbine Mile, a hinge point for Modern Games’s Eclipse candidacy. This victory, with the fine South American import Ivar finishing second by more than five lengths, was both ridiculously easy and very fast, Modern Games’s 112 Beyer Speed Figure was the best turf Beyer posted anywhere in North America during 2022. Appleby went to the well again, running Modern Games over a straight course at Ascot and on very soft ground in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes just three weeks before the FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile, the main autumn goal. Modern Games does his best work around turns and on firmer footing, yet still put up a competitive second in the QE II. His passage through the Mile proved less than ideal, and while less-than-stellar competition, by top-class standards, helped his cause, Modern Games hit every seam with perfect timing under William Buick becoming the first horse to win the Mile the year after the Juvenile Turf. Champion 3-year-old and male turf champion or not, exciting news after the Mile: There will be a 4-year-old campaign for this sterling colt. Let the Games continue. 76 The 52nd Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. By Marcus Hersh When Taiba shipped out of Southern California and showed up at Monmouth Park for the TVG.com Haskell Invitational on July 23, he seemed a little like a teenager on spring break. In his visitor’s stall, craning his neck into the shed row, his head bobbed, his gaze wandered, a colt interested in his surroundings but perhaps not fully processing them. Out on the racetrack for routine gallops, Taiba goofed around. You could imagine him shouting as he ran past, “Practice is boring!” Taiba works that way, notoriously disinterested, hard to read until you realize he’s not really putting all that much into it. But, wow, can this compact chestnut colt run! His career debut didn’t come until March 5, and after that dazzling sprint win, where Taiba earned a 103 Beyer Speed Figure without even appearing to work all that hard, he was thrown into the Runhappy Santa Anita Derby. Already, things had gotten a little weird – and not just because this was a maiden sprint winner going into a Grade 1 over 1 1/8 miles. With trainer Bob Baffert banned from participation in the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve and horses he trained unable to earn points in Derby qualifying races, owner Amr Zedan moved Taiba to the barn of trainer Tim Yakteen before the Santa Anita Derby. And voila! – Yakteen had a Santa Anita Derby winner. No Baffert at the Derby, and no Baffert Derby mystique for Taiba, who raced in contention to the far turn, then faded to 12th. A son of Gun Runner and the Flatter mare, Needmore Flattery, Taiba regrouped, returned to Baffert, and still was far from a finished product at Monmouth. In the Haskell, Taiba was unhappy being stuck down on the rail and merely was spinning his wheels at the half-mile pole when jockey Mike Smith decided the only hope was an outside run. In the clear, Taiba picked up the bit again and finished like a train, but his greenness earlier in the race was the difference between victory and a narrow loss to Cyberknife. Two months later, in the Pennsylvania Derby, Baffert hardly could believe he was watching Taiba pull nearly the same trip as in the Haskell – only this time, Taiba had no issue with it. Racing professionally enough, he buried Cyberknife and the good colt Zandon, winning by three. Taiba improved again in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic – he just happened to run into Flightline, one of the fastest horses in decades, finishing a distant third behind him but only a half-length behind crack older horse Olympiad. On the cutback to seven furlongs in the Grade 1 Runhappy Malibu on Dec. 26, Mike Smith had to ride the hair off Taiba for a good half-mile. No worries, the colt was much the best, winning by more than four at a distance shorter than ideal. Again, here was a colt only seeming to scratch his talent’s surface. Taiba was purchased for $1.7 million by Zedan at the 2021 FasigTipton March 2-year-old sale. He was bred in Kentucky by Bruce C. Ryan. 78 The 52nd Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. As a part of tonight’s festivities, to salute horseplayers throughout North America, we recognize David Harrison of Webster, N.Y., winner of the 2022 NTRA Horseplayer of the Year for capturing the 23rd annual NTRA National Horseplayers Championship (NHC) presented by Racetrack Television Network, Caesars Entertainment, and Bally’s Las Vegas. Harrison topped a field of 643 entries to win the $725,000 firstplace prize and amassed a winning score of $342 over the threeday tournament (Jan. 28-30, 2022) from 53 mythical $2 win and place bets – 18 on Friday, 18 on Saturday, 10 in Sunday morning’s semifinal round, and seven at the climactic Final Table presented by Caesars Sportsbook and Global Tote, A BetMakers Company. The 63-year-old Harrison, who makes his living as a real estate appraiser and collateral analyst, held a $30.30 advantage over A.J. Benton and the rest of the field entering the Final Table. Despite a tightening of the TVG Leaderboard from the first six of seven Final Table races, Harrison did enough to hold off his rivals late. “This is an absolute life-changing score,” Harrison said. “I’m a middle-class, middle-income, hard-working guy. This is going to help me hopefully retire a little bit earlier than I’d planned. I’m totally overwhelmed and don’t even know what else to say.” The contest came down to the Baffle Stakes at Santa Anita – a 6 1/2-furlong turf sprint for 3-year-olds – with Harrison $16.60 ahead of Benton and $17.20 to the better of Ryan Patrick Scully. The other seven were at least $44 from the top. “The guys in second and third only had a few options,” Harrison said. “Don’t Swear Dave went up to 4-1 and I thought, ‘If I don’t have that horse they could nip me. And my name’s Dave! I can’t let that horse beat me.’ ” Even-money favorite Maglev hit the lead in the upper stretch and drew off easily. To slam the door shut, Don’t Swear Dave closed for second, making it impossible for anyone to catch Harrison. As Maglev opened up, Harrison did not wait to see him hit the wire before raising his arms in triumph and leaving the stage to celebrate with his friends in a far corner of the ballroom. Harrison started the day in 14th and made his big moves in the morning’s semifinals round. At the Final Table, no player moved more than one position. “My goal was to creep up and I hit my first couple of races,” he said. “Then the one that really got my confidence up was the horse at Laurel – Let Me Finish. Every time I get into a discussion with my wife she’s always telling me that – let me finish. That was one of my hunch plays and that’s probably the reason I won.” Harrison has been handicapping since the late 1970s, when he would frequent Belmont Park, and credits the late New York Racing Association broadcaster and handicapper Harvey Pack for teaching him how to handicap. After the trophy presentation, Harrison tossed his Daily Racing Form in the air in tribute to Pack. “I’m an old-school guy,” he said. “I just use the Form.” Scully ended up second with $324.80, good for a $200,000 prize, followed by Benton with $321, which was worth $150,000. The NHC finals awarded cash prizes to 64 players—the top 10 percent of finishers—from a total cash prize purse of $2,339,550. An additional $50,000 went to the top 20 in the consolation tournament. Including $355,000 paid out to top finishers in the year-long NHC Tour, NHC Tour travel awards, RTN subscriptions, and the $10,000 Charity Challenge tournament prize, plus $30,000 worth of Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge prizes in the form of entry fees, airfare, and hotel, the aggregate value of payouts in NHC cash and prizes totaled $3,568,592. The NHC was held for the third straight year in the historic Bally’s Event Center, which for three days was transformed into the world’s largest race and sports book. This year’s NHC will be held at the same property on March 10-12 but it will bear a new name, Horseshoe Las Vegas. David Harrison 2022 NTRA HORSEPLAYER OF THE YEAR Horsephotos.com/NTRA

80 The 52nd Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. By Steve Andersen Keeping up with In Italian in 2022 was a dangerous tactic. In nearly all of her seven races, In Italian set the pace, a tactic that led to four wins, including two in Grade 1 stakes, and a position among the three finalists for the Eclipse Award as the nation’s outstanding turf female of the year. A season that started with a win in a first-condition allowance race on the second Wednesday of January at Tampa Bay Downs ended with a game second to Tuesday in the Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf on Nov. 5 at Keeneland. In between, In Italian won three stakes and set a course record at Saratoga while racing for owner Peter Brant and trainer Chad Brown. A 4-year-old filly in 2022, In Italian won her career stakes debut in her fourth start in the Grade 3 Honey Fox Stakes at about a mile at Gulfstream Park in early March, but lost her next two starts to stablemates. In Italian was second to Speak of the Devil in the Grade 2 Distaff Turf Mile at Churchill Downs on May 7, and third behind Regal Glory in the Grade 1 Longines Just a Game Stakes on June 11 at Belmont Park. At times during the year, In Italian was a workmate with Regal Glory, a Grade 1 winner in 2021 and another finalist for the outstanding turf female award. Even though In Italian was beaten in May and June, Brown had In Italian entered among a group of four fillies and mares from his stable in the Grade 1 Diana Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on turf July 16 at Saratoga. Ridden by Joel Rosario and dismissed at 8-1, In Italian ran one of the best races of her career, leading throughout to win by 1 1/2 lengths over stablemates Technical Analysis and Bleecker Street. The final time of 1:45.06 was a course record. “They separate each other when you run them together,” Brown said at the time. “I like to run the horses against each other, settle it out on the track.” In Italian, a daughter of Dubawi out of Florentina bred in Great Britain by Fairway Thoroughbreds, was bought for approximately $609,000 by Brant as a yearling. In Italian remained sharp through her fall campaign. She won the second Grade 1 stakes of her career in the First Lady Stakes at a mile on turf Oct. 8 at Keeneland, finishing a length in front of Regal Glory and giving Brown a fifth consecutive win in the race. In Italian finished the year with a second by a length in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf. In Italian set a quick pace in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf, but could not hold off the Irish-bred Tuesday, who closed from seventh to lead in the final furlong. Brown praised In Italian’s effort, despite a quick pace. In Italian “really ran her heart out,” Brown said. That sentiment matched the theme of the filly’s 2022 season. 82 The 51st Annual Eclipse Awards, presented by Daily Racing Form, the National Thoroughbred Racing Association and the National Turf Writers And Broadcasters By Steve Andersen Regal Glory amassed a fine collection of trophies for owner Peter Brant in important turf stakes for fillies and mares in 2022, easily securing a place among the finalists for the Eclipse Award as the nation’s outstanding turf female. From coast to coast, Regal Glory ran in leading races for the division at top tracks. Regal Glory’s cold statistics for 2022 – 4 wins in 7 starts from late January to early December, all in stakes, and earnings of $1,374,250. Her legacy was best summarized by trainer Chad Brown after Regal Glory won her final start, the Grade 1 Matriarch Stakes at a mile on Dec. 4 at Del Mar. “I’d put her in the top half-dozen turf mares I’ve trained,” he said on the evening of the race. Brown has trained the winners of seven Eclipse Awards for outstanding turf female and has two finalists this year, including In Italian. With such a résumé in his 15-year training career, Brown’s point of view carries massive significance. Regal Glory was supposed to be among the top turf females in the nation in 2022. She ended her 2021 season with a win in the Matriarch Stakes, the first Grade 1 win of her career in her 16th start. Brant had paid $925,000 for Regal Glory at the 2021 Keeneland January horses of all ages sale. Regal Glory went through the auction months after the death of the filly’s breeder and original owner, Paul Pompa. Regal Glory won five stakes for Pompa and seven for Brant. A 6-year-old mare in 2022, Regal Glory won her first three starts of the year – the Grade 3 Pegasus World Cup Filly and Mare Turf Invitational at Gulfstream Park in January, the Grade 1 Jenny Wiley Stakes at Keeneland in April, and the Grade 1 Longines Just a Game Stakes at Belmont Park in June. After the Just a Game, Brown praised Brant’s decision to race Regal Glory in 2022. “It’s just one of those situations where she’s in her prime right now,” Brown said. “Some horses catch their peak window at different ages. Her, it seems like age 6.” Regal Glory’s 2022 winning streak ended with a second-place finish as the 1-2 favorite to Casa Creed in the Grade 1 Fourstardave Handicap against males on Aug. 13 at Saratoga. She was later second to In Italian in the Grade 1 First Lady Stakes for fillies and mares at a mile on turf at Keeneland and 10th after a wide trip against males in the FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile on Nov. 5 at Keeneland. The losing streak ended with an emphatic victory in the Matriarch, when she stormed clear to win by 5 1/4 lengths, the widest winning margin of her career in her final start. 84 The 52nd Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. By Steve Andersen For all her lofty accomplishments against fillies and mares in her career, two races against males in the autumn of 2022 have largely defined the career of War Like Goddess. A four-time stakes winner in 2021, War Like Goddess was a finalist for the Eclipse Award as the nation’s outstanding turf female that year. She is back in the same position for the 2022 season for her successful five-race campaign in Kentucky and New York, a season filled with a dramatic losses and electrifying wins. Owned by George Krikorian, who purchased her for $30,000 out of an OBS horses of racing age sale, bred by Calumet Farm, and trained by Bill Mott, War Like Goddess had a disrupted campaign in early 2022. After a comfortable win at 1-5 in the Grade 3 Bewitch Stakes at 1 1/2 miles for fillies and mares at Keeneland in late April in her first start of the year, War Like Goddess missed an appearance in the Grade 1 New York Handicap at Belmont Park in early June after an incident in May in which she tied up. War Like Goddess did not race again until the Grade 2 Glen Falls Stakes, for fillies and mares at 1 1/2 miles on turf at Saratoga on Aug. 6, which she won comfortably at 2-5. For the rest of her season, War Like Goddess was the subject of widespread conversation – for her wins and losses. War Like Goddess was 1-5 in the Grade 2 Flower Bowl Stakes at 1 3/8 miles on turf at Saratoga on Sept. 3. Ridden by Joel Rosario, War Like Goddess followed a glacially slow pace, including six furlongs in 1:19.59, and rallied through traffic to finish a neck behind Virginia Joy. Mott expressed concern about a potential slow pace before the race and his fear was realized. “It’s just impossible to overcome,” Mott said after the race. “She’s a good horse. She came flying.” The Flower Bowl was the last time War Like Goddess raced against fillies and mares in 2022. Five weeks later, she faced males for the first time in her 12th career start in the Grade 1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic at 1 1/2 miles on turf at the Belmont at Aqueduct meeting. Ridden by Jose Lezcano, War Like Goddess closed from third of seven to win by an easy 2 3/4 lengths. Bettors had faith. She was the 9-10 favorite. The race was a prep for the $4 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf at Keeneland on Nov. 5. “I’ve always thought she belongs,” Mott said of running War Like Goddess in the Turf. “I don’t think we’re out of line whatsoever. I think she deserves the opportunity.” With Rosario back aboard, War Like Goddess was the 3-1 second choice in a field of 13. Closing from 11th in a field of 12, War Like Goddess finished third behind Rebel’s Romance and Stone Age, the best result of an American-based runner and the only one in the first six. The Breeders’ Cup Turf was the end of an eventful campaign worthy of a championship nomination. 86 The 52nd Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. 88 The 52nd Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. By Marcus Hersh Nations Pride was favored in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf. He finished fifth, never coming close to contention, but the Godolphin homebred accomplished enough earlier in the year to make him a finalist for champion male turf horse of 2022. Trained by Charlie Appleby, Nations Pride is by Teofilo out of Important Time, by Oasis Dream. He wintered in Dubai, won an English Derby prep in stylish fashion, finished eighth in the Derby at Epsom, and then was marked for North American racing by England-based Appleby. The record shows that Appleby nearly always chooses the right horses to send overseas, and Nations Pride did well here. A tough outside post and a wide trip proved his undoing in the Grade 1 Caesars Belmont Derby Invitational, where he rallied with aplomb but finished second to pacesetting Classic Causeway. Nations Pride avenged that tough loss in the Grade 1 Caesars Saratoga Derby Invitational, where he beat Annapolis, who would win the Grade 1 Coolmore Turf Mile in October, as well as Classic Causeway while hitting a new career peak. Back at Belmont for the Grade 3 Jockey Club Derby Invitational, Nations Pride walloped inferior competition, winning by more than six lengths. Nations Pride, from the words of his trainer and the presence of Godolphin’s lead jockey, William Buick, appeared to be Godolphin’s “A” team in the Breeders’ Cup Turf. The trip he got in the race wouldn’t be considered ideal, and Nations Pride lacked a finishing flourish. He was beaten nearly four lengths by his victorious stablemate Rebel’s Romance. A handy colt with a versatile style, having raced just off the speed winning the Newmarket Stakes in April, Nations Pride also demonstrated a high degree of hardiness during 2022. Counting his trip from Dubai to England, Nations Pride traveled some 14,000 miles during the year. He stayed in New York between the Belmont Derby and the Saratoga Derby, but still made three flights from England to America from early July to late October. His Beyer Speed Figure in the Breeders’ Cup Turf, 100, was best among his quartet of starts in this country, showing that even after a demanding campaign, this plucky colt still was improving. And there may be more to come in 2023. The 52nd Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. 90 By Marcus Hersh Rebel’s Romance never got to race during his first trip to America. Sent to New York for the 2021 Belmont Stakes, Rebel’s Romance developed a leg infection that precluded him running. Rebel’s Romance’s second trip to America worked out much better. Gelded after his 3-year-old season and remade from a dirt horse into a 1 1/2-mile turf performer, Rebel’s Romance stormed to a 2 1/2-length victory in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf, a showing strong enough to make him an Eclipse Award finalist. Trained by Charlie Appleby, the homebred by Dubawi out of Minidress, by Street Cry, was bet like a second-stringer in the Breeders’ Cup Turf behind his Godolphin stablemate Nations Pride. Firstcall rider William Buick was aboard Nations Pride, James Doyle riding Rebel’s Romance. In the days leading up to the race, Appleby himself suggested Nations Pride might be the right one. He’d already made three North American starts during 2022, and as a slighter, handier type of horse, was thought to suit the Keeneland turf course, compact by European standards. Also in days leading up to the Breeders’ Cup Turf: The awesome physical presence of Rebel’s Romance leaving the Keeneland international quarantine area and going through his paces during morning training. A massive, charismatic beast full of life, Rebel’s Romance stole the show among the Godolphin contingent readying for Breeders’ Cup races. Appleby questioned how Rebel’s Romance would handle the Keeneland turns. The answer was: Not very well, but good enough. Rallying wide, with a tsunami of momentum, Rebel’s Romance swept to the lead by the furlong grounds and cruised home in America’s richest grass race. That made Rebel’s Romance 5 for 5 since two dreadful races last winter over the dirt track at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai led to the gelding and a surface switch. Rising up the class ladder through the year, Rebel’s Romance won a Group 3 in England before being sent to Germany for his Group 1 turf debut, which produced a narrow victory in the Grosser Preis von Berlin in August. In September, Rebel’s Romance gave weight and beat the talented German Derby winner Sammarco by three-quarters of a length in the Preis von Europa. Rebel’s Romance was very good that day – even better on American soil. 92 The 52nd Annual Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. By Marty McGee The story of Caravel already had plenty of layers to it, even before she stunned the racing world by winning the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint as a 42-1 outsider. Caravel won on debut as a 3-year-old at Penn National in June 2020 for Elizabeth Merryman, who bred, owned, and trained the gray daughter of Mizzen Mast. For Merryman, not only would Caravel become the Pennsylvania-bred horse of the year for 2020 by winning 4 of 5 starts, but she also became a graded winner the following year in winning three of her first four tries, ending with a 2 1/2-length triumph in the Grade 3 Caress on the Saratoga turf. Merryman had sold majority interest in Caravel about six weeks before the Caress, and the filly ultimately was turned over to another trainer for her last three starts of 2021. She then was purchased for $500,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky mixed sale in November 2021 by Qatar Racing, Marc Detampel, and Madaket Stables before being turned over to Brad Cox for the 2022 racing season. After winning the Queen at Turfway Park in March in her first start for Cox, Caravel then was sixth against males in the Grade 2 Twin Spires Turf Sprint at Churchill Downs. She then won the Grade 3 Intercontinental on the Belmont Park turf in June; finished ninth as the favorite when trying to repeat in the Caress at Saratoga in July; won the Smart N Fancy on the Saratoga turf in August; was fourth as the favorite in the Grade 2 Presque Isle Masters over a synthetic surface; and won the Grade 3 Franklin over the Keeneland turf in October when rallying from just off the pace. “Right from the start, she took me everywhere we needed to go,” jockey Tyler Gaffalione said following the Franklin. Then came another try against males in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint on Nov. 5 at Keeneland. Dismissed at long odds in a full field of 14 that included heavily favored Golden Pal – whose poor start dramatically altered the expected outcome – Caravel sped to the front down the backstretch under Gaffalione and never looked back, turning back all challenges and prevailing by a half-length over Emaraaty Ana. Her $87.78 win mutuel was among the highest in Breeders’ Cup history. “She was running back in 20 days but had a race over the course,” Cox said. “She’d had a hard time keeping on weight, but since the end of the summer, she’s really blossomed. We decided to take a swing.” Caravel, a daughter of the Congrats mare Zeezee Zoomzoom, earned $930,983 from her eight starts in 2022, bringing her career total to $1,331,152. She has won 12 of 20 overall starts. Cox said a 6-year-old campaign is in the works for Caravel, with a return to the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Santa Anita the yearend goal. She was scheduled to return to training by late January at Fair Grounds. 94 The 52nd Annual Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. By Marty McGee Echo Zulu initially was meant to chase after a second straight Eclipse Award as the top 3-year-old filly of 2022, but a mid-course correction eventually was undertaken after the brilliant daughter of Gun Runner was defeated for the first time in the Kentucky Oaks. Coming off a sensational 2021 during which she easily won all four starts to earn the Eclipse for outstanding 2-year-old filly, Echo Zulu remained unbeaten by winning by a nose in her 3-year-old debut, the Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks in late March. Stretched out to 1 1/8 miles for the Grade 1 Longines Kentucky Oaks on May 6 at Churchill Downs, she faded to fourth after contesting the pace. Trainer Steve Asmussen then entered her in the Grade 1 Acorn five weeks later at Belmont Park, but Echo Zulu was scratched just before post time, ultimately diagnosed with a minor leg injury that kept her sidelined for the summer. Brought back to the races with a new plan, Echo Zulu blitzed four overmatched 3-year-old fillies in a 5 1/4-length triumph Sept. 24 under the Churchill lights in the Grade 3 Dogwood. Ricardo Santana Jr., who had ridden Echo Zulu in her first three starts before being replaced for the next three, was back aboard for the seven-furlong Dogwood. “She is such a special filly,” Asmussen said afterward. “She’s a champion, and it’s very thrilling to get her back to her winning ways. It’s unbelievably exciting for the entire team.” With longer races being unfeasible for the balance of the year, Asmussen then geared his thinking toward a first-time run versus older fillies and mares in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, a seven-furlong race on Nov. 5 at Keeneland. Forwardly placed under Santana while parked wide throughout from the outside post in a field of 12, Echo Zulu persisted to be a good second, finishing 2 1/2 lengths behind the victorious Goodnight Olive while another length before her stablemate Wicked Halo in third. “Ricardo was very frustrated with how wide she was, how much ground she gave up, but I was very proud of her effort,” Asmussen said. “At this level, give credit to the winner. It’s just sometimes the spot you want is taken.” Echo Zulu was bred in Kentucky by a seven-way partnership and was purchased for $300,000 at the 2020 Keeneland September yearling sale by the partnership of L and N Racing and Winchell Thoroughbreds. The bay filly was produced by Letgomyecho, by Menifee. Her 2-for-4 record in 2022 was worth $636,375 in earnings, bringing her updated career totals to 6 for 8 and $2,116,375. Following the Breeders’ Cup, Echo Zulu got time off at Becky Maker’s farm in Versailles, Ky., ahead of being scheduled to return to Asmussen at Fair Grounds in mid-January for a 4-year-old campaign. 96 The 52nd Annual Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. By Marty McGee Goodnight Olive didn’t get started on her 4-year-old campaign seriously until nearly half of 2022 was over – but once she did, the filly was absolutely perfect. As a result she was named as a finalist for both champion female sprinter and older dirt female. Bothered primarily by ankle issues at 2 and 3, Goodnight Olive finally was ready to undertake a serious campaign on June 22, when she returned from an eight-month layoff with a 5 1/2-length victory in a second-level allowance going seven furlongs at Belmont Park. The comeback gave her owners and trainer Chad Brown hope that she might finally be sound enough to fulfill her immense potential. “There have been more bad phone calls than good ones along the way with this horse,” Brown said after Goodnight Olive capped a 4-for-4 season by winning the Nov. 5 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at Keeneland. “A couple of times she’s had to stop, although every time she’s run, she’s proven she’s there. A remarkable record, with all the stoppages and such.” Goodnight Olive was purchased as a yearling for $170,000 in October 2019 at Fasig-Tipton Kentucky by the First Row Partners of Steve Laymon. Team Hanley (Jay Hanley) bought into her before she incurred her only career defeat in her March 2021 debut at Gulfstream Park. The filly went on to win her next two races at 3 before needing more time off. Once ready, she was unbeatable. Following the easy June win, Goodnight Olive captured a third-level allowance sprint on Aug. 7 at Saratoga, setting her up for her stakes debut three weeks later in the Grade 1 Ballerina at Saratoga. She won with aplomb, taking over after turning for home to prevail by 2 3/4 lengths. “They were going a little fast, but she was going the right way,” said Irad Ortiz Jr., who rode Goodnight Olive in all four of her 2022 starts. “She was relaxed and in a good spot. I bided my time and waited.” Off that impressive score, Goodnight Olive was the 9-5 favorite in a field of 12 in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. Another terrific trip unfolded, with Ortiz guiding her home from just off the pace in a convincing 2 1/2-length victory. Goodnight Olive was bred in Kentucky by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings. She was sired by Ghostzapper and produced by Salty Strike, by Smart Strike. She finished the year with $915,450, bringing her career total to $1,019,950 on a 6-for-7 record. After getting time off following the Breeders’ Cup, Goodnight Olive will gear back up at Payson Park in Florida for a 5-year-old campaign. Brown and the owners have expressed interest in ultimately stretching her out to longer distances, alluding to a pedigree that suggests she might well be able to handle more ground. 98 The 52nd Annual Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, Keeneland, and The Jockey Club, and produced by the NTRA. By Mary Rampellini Cody’s Wish was running for so much more than accolades in November when he fought for a head victory in the $1 million Big Ass Fans Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. He seemed to know there was a greater purpose at hand, and it became evident when he was greeted in the winner’s circle by Cody Dorman. Cody’s Wish is named for the special-needs teenager born with Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome. The pair have been pals since meeting several years earlier through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Bred and owned by Godolphin and trained by Bill Mott, Cody’s Wish won 4 of 5 starts last year, including a run of four straight victories that included the Grade 1 Forego at Saratoga ahead of his Breeders’ Cup. For the memorable season, Cody’s Wish is an Eclipse Award finalist for outstanding male sprinter of 2022. The Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, which was run at Keeneland, was the first two-turn race won by Cody’s Wish. He had won five races at the mile distance prior to the Breeders’ Cup, but all of those came at one turn. In the Dirt Mile, Cody’s Wish had one horse beat early before mounting his bid. In the stretch, he became engaged in a battle with Cyberknife. “I knew he was going to get it done at that point,” Junior Alvarado, the regular rider of Cody’s Wish, told Daily Racing Form. “I could feel the aggression that he had, the will he had just to win the race.” Cody’s Wish was favored in the Dirt Mile on the strength of his performance in the Forego, which he won by 1 1/4 lengths over Jackie’s Warrior. Cody’s Wish covered seven furlongs in a blazing 1:20.95 to earn a Beyer Speed Figure of 112. “He ran racehorse time and was getting away from everybody crossing the wire,” Mott told Daily Racing Form. “The win was good for the owners, it was great for the team here at the stable, and goes a little further than that,” Mott added. “If it gives a little bit of enjoyment for [Cody Dorman], that makes it really worthwhile.” Cody’s Wish is a son of Curlin and the Grade 1-winning mare Dance Card, who earned more than $500,000. Cody’s Wish was bred in Kentucky. He has compiled a career record of 7 wins from 11 starts for earnings of $1.3 million. Plans are for Cody’s Wish to return to the races in 2023. “He came out of the Breeders’ Cup very well,” said Michael Banahan, Godolphin’s director of bloodstock for the United States. “He’s sound, healthy, and we’re extremely excited about seeing him race next year.” Odds are, so is Cody Dorman.
