The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA 10By Nicole RussoThe sprint filly Cy Fair struck her targets all summer and fall, with a victory in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint securing her spot as an Eclipse Award finalist.Cy Fair, bred in Kentucky by Marc Keller, is a daughter of Taylor Made Farm kingpin Not This Time, who had a career year, and out of the winning Arch mare Remarqued. She was consigned to the 2024 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s spring sale of 2-year-olds in training by Niall Brennan and was purchased for $185,000 by Reagan Swinbank’s Swinbank Stables. Joining the partnership to race her throughout the year were Medallion Racing, a racing partnership arm of Taylor Made, Joey Platts, and Mark Stanton.Cy Fair was turned over to trainer George Weaver, and about three months after emerging from the 2-year-old sale, she won her debut on July 10 at Saratoga, dominating fellow maiden fillies by 3 1/4 lengths. The following month, she made her stakes debut in the Bolton Landing at Saratoga and was edged a neck by Snow Face Princess.Cy Fair bounced back to win the Algonquin against males on Oct. 5 at Woodbine, rallying from last of six to win by 3 1/4 lengths. From there, she was entered in the field of 12 lining up for the Juvenile Turf Sprint, also against males, on Oct. 31 at Del Mar. Cy Fair, with Irad Ortiz Jr. in the irons, chased a strong pace between horses and coming into the stretch, she was breathing down the throatlatch of pacesetter Schwarzenegger. As that colt gave way, Cy Fair still had more to give, clearing in the final sixteenth to win by a length. She became the second filly to win the Juvenile Turf Sprint, which was added to the Breeders’ Cup program in 2018, joining 2021 winner Twilight Gleaming. She also became the first Breeders’ Cup winner for Weaver.“I can’t describe it,” Weaver said post-race. “It’s why we all get in the game. It’s hard to win these big races like this, and it’s my first Breeders’ Cup. We’ve had a great year, and I’m thankful to my staff, thankful to all the clients that supported me. We’ve got some nice horses, and she’s one of the top ones. She’s been a bullet all year long. Frankly, I don’t know how she got beat the second time we ran her in a stake. But she looked fantastic at Woodbine, like a super, special horse. She came over here and did it against the best in the world. We’re thrilled.”Following the Breeders’ Cup, Weaver felt it was good timing to give Cy Fair, who had been going non-stop since the sale in April, a freshening, noting a lack of major turf sprint races for her division in early 2026. The filly was expected to begin gearing up following the turn of the year for a campaign that could include both domestic and international competition.Cy FairOwn: Medallion Racing Swinbank Stables LLCB. f. 2 (Mar) OBSAPR25 $185,000Sire: Not This Time (Giant's Causeway) $175,000Dam:Remarqued (Arch)Br: Marc Keller (Ky)Tr: Weaver George (39 7 6 8 .18) 2025 :(378 72 .19)Life 4 3 1 0 $680,205 882025 4 3 1 0 $680,205 882024 0 M 0 0 $0 -0 0 0 0 $0 -D.Fst 0 0 0 0 $0 -Wet(425) 0 0 0 0 $0 -Synth(360) $0Turf(367) 4 3 1 0 $680,205 88Dst(0) 0 0 0 0 $0 -31å25= 6Dmr fm 5f ê C 21¨ :44¦ :56 BCJvTfSp-G1 88 9 /12 4 4¦ô 2¦ 2Ç 1¦ Ortiz I Jr 119 5.00 97=04 CyFir¦Brussels¦õAspectIslndö Chsd btwn,2w,clear1/165å25= 7WO fm 5f Ñ 22§ :45 :56¦ AlgonquinL184k 82 2 /6 2 6©õ 6©ö 3¦ô 1¨õ Civaci S 117 *1.05 96=04 Cy Fair¨õCasson¦õGypsy Artô Strong run, kick away17Ý25= 8Sar fm 5ôf ê 22¦ :45¦ :56§ 1:02¨ çBltnLndngL145k 82 3 /5 2 2ô 2ô 1ô 2É Velazquez J R 122 *.60 86=13 SnwFcPrncssÉCyFr§MySwthrt¦ Press 2p btw, caught10Û25= 6Sar fm 5ôf ê 21§ :44 :55§ 1:01§ çMd Sp Wt 100k 80 8 /9 4 2¦ô 1Ç 1©ô 1¨õ Velazquez J R 119 5.70 92=07 CyFair¨õMermaidÇKetoDrinkô Chased 3-2w, burst clr2-YEAR-OLD FILLYMedallion Racing, Swinbank Stables LLC, Joey Platts, and Mark StantonCy FairBarBara D. The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA 12By Nicole RussoThe Oak Leaf Stakes, a prominent event for 2-year-old fillies at Santa Anita, has been won by Eclipse Award divisional champion fillies It’s in the Air (1978), Landaluce (1982), Pleasant Stage (1991), Phone Chatter (1993), Chilukki (1999), Halfbridled (2003), Sweet Catomine (2004), Stardom Bound (2008), and Songbird (2015). But its winners also have gone on to good things beyond their 2-yearold campaigns. Winners Bold ’n Determined (1979), Serena’s Song (1994), and Songbird are in the Hall of Fame; Lite Light (1990) and Blind Luck (2009) went on to win the following year’s Kentucky Oaks; and Life’s Magic (1983) and Sacahuista (1986) also went on to earn future championships. It’s that lofty list that Explora added her name to, and her name also is now among the 2025 Eclipse Award finalists for champion 2-year-old filly after that Grade 2 Oak Leaf victory and other solid performances.Explora, by champion Blame and out of the winning mare Collections Choice, by outstanding broodmare sire Bernardini, was bred in Kentucky by Mesingw Farm. She was a $22,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase by Rusty Roberts, then was successfully pinhooked, via the Crane Thoroughbreds consignment, at the 2025 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-olds in training sale, selling for $350,000 in Maryland. She was purchased by the “Three Amigos,” the partnership of Mike Pegram, Karl Watson, and Paul Weitman, longtime clients of trainer Bob Baffert.Explora won her debut for Baffert on Aug. 17 at Del Mar, rolling by 4 3/4 lengths, then quickly came back in the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante on Sept. 6. Sent away as the favorite, she led early but finished second, beaten a length by Baffert-trained stablemate Bottle of Rouge.Explora went two turns for the first time in the Oak Leaf on Oct. 4 at Santa Anita, with her pedigree suggesting she would relish the additional distance. She indeed rose to the challenge, dominating by 4 1/4 lengths. She was the record 14th Oak Leaf winner for Baffert.Off the Oak Leaf win, Explora moved on to the NetJets Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies on Oct. 31 at Del Mar. After sitting a nice, stalking trip under Juan Hernandez, she gamely tried to get to leader Super Corredora for the length of the stretch, missing by just threequarters of a length at the wire to her fellow Eclipse Award finalist. She was three lengths clear of the rest of the field.Explora wasn’t idle for long after the Breeders’ Cup. She breezed at Santa Anita through November and December preparing for her 3-year-old debut.ExploraOwn: Pegram Michael E., Watson, Karl and WDk. b or b. f. 2 (Apr) EASMAY25 $350,000Sire: Blame (Arch) $25,000Dam:Collections Choice (Bernardini)Br: Mesingw Farm, LLC (Ky)Tr: Baffert Bob (0 0 0 0 .00) 2025 :(338 103 .30)Life 4 2 2 0 $568,000 882025 4 2 2 0 $568,000 882024 0 M 0 0 $0 -0 0 0 0 $0 -D.Fst 4 2 2 0 $568,000 88Wet(414) 0 0 0 0 $0 -Synth(332) $0Turf(298) 0 0 0 0 $0 -Dst(0) 0 0 0 0 $0 -31å25= 7Dmr fst 1Â C 22§ :45¨ 1:10 1:43¨ çBCJuvFil-G1 83 7 /9 3¦ 3¦ô 4¦õ 2¦ 2ö Hernandez J J 122 *1.50 93=03 SuperCorrdoröExplor¨PrcysBrÇ Loomed, kept at bay4å25= 9SA fst 1Â 23 :46© 1:11§ 1:44 çOakLeaf-G2 83 6 /6 3§ô 3¦ 2¦ 1§ô 1©õ Hernandez J J 122 *.40 89=10 Explor©õLWlly¦õLVilleLumir¤õ 3deep,bid2w1/4,cleared6æ25= 6Dmr fst 7f C 22 :44¨ 1:09¨ 1:23 çDMrDeb-G1 74 1 /7 3 1ô 1¦ô 1¦ 2¦ Hernandez J J 120 b *.60 87=09 BottleofRouge¦ExploraôLaWlly¬ö Bpd st,ins, yield late17Ý25= 2Dmr fst 5ôf 21© :44© :57 1:03 çMd Sp Wt 80k 88 2 /5 1 1ô 1§ 1© 1©ö Hernandez J J 122 b *.20 94=12 Explora©öRevera¬õTotal Val§ Inside, barely asked2-YEAR-OLD FILLYMichael E. The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA 14By Nicole RussoFrom the time the Breeders’ Cup was first run in 1984 through 2024, the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner has earned her divisional title 37 times. Super Corredora, who went from a maiden to the 2025 NetJets Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner in less than a month, is now a candidate to join that list as an Eclipse finalist. Super Corredora is a daughter of Hall of Famer and breakout sire Gun Runner, out of the winning Super Saver mare Super Simple. She was bred in Kentucky by Woodford Thoroughbreds and was consigned by Denali Stud at the 2024 Keeneland September yearling sale. The late-April foal was a $400,000 purchase by West Point Thoroughbreds. That partnership added Spartan Equine Racing, Robert Gardiner, and Michael Olszewski to the ownership roster.Super Corredora made her debut July 19 at Del Mar for trainer John Sadler. Going five furlongs and breaking toward the inside, she chased a hot pace before weakening to fifth behind La Wally. The filly gave an improved effort Aug. 9 at Del Mar, dueling with Bottle of Rouge early in a 6 1/2-furlong tilt before Bottle of Rouge cleared to dominate the race. Bottle of Rouge went on to flatter the runner-up by winning the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante. When the circuit moved to Santa Anita, the third time proved the charm for Super Corredora, who got to go a mile in a maiden special weight on Oct. 11. She attended the pace early before taking over, opening a four-length lead into the stretch and widening to win by 8 1/4 lengths.“We always expected she could get two turns,” Sadler said. “She has a beautiful stride. It didn’t go smooth this summer. The first time she drew the one and didn’t really get it. She improved in the second and she’s improved every time.” Super Corredora’s training in the ensuing weeks convinced Sadler, and her owners, to take a shot in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies just shy of three weeks later on Oct. 31. She was overlooked off just the maiden win in the starting field of nine. Super Corredora was confidently handled by Hector Berrios, who had been aboard for each of her starts. She led throughout the 1 1/16-mile race, setting honest splits of 22.42 seconds, 45.63, and 1:10.15. She had enough in the stretch to hold sway by three-quarters of a length over Explora in 1:43.71.Super Corredora posted three official works in December at Santa Anita and is considered a candidate for the 2026 Kentucky Oaks prep races. “We’re excited for next year,” Sadler said after the Breeders’ Cup. “She’s well suited for the distance races.”Super CorredoraOwn: Spartan Equine Racing LLC West PointB. f. 2 (Apr) KEESEP24 $400,000Sire: Gun Runner (Candy Ride*Arg) $250,000Dam:Super Simple (Super Saver)Br: Woodford Thoroughbreds, LLC (Ky)Tr: Sadler John W (0 0 0 0 .00) 2025 :(330 70 .21)Life 4 2 1 0 $1,093,600 842025 4 2 1 0 $1,093,600 842024 0 M 0 0 $0 -0 0 0 0 $0 -D.Fst 4 2 1 0 $1,093,600 84Wet(445) 0 0 0 0 $0 -Synth(285) $0Turf(229) 0 0 0 0 $0 -Dst(0) 0 0 0 0 $0 -31å25= 7Dmr fst 1Â C 22§ :45¨ 1:10 1:43¨ çBCJuvFil-G1 84 8 /9 1¦ 1¦ 1¦ 1¦ 1ö Berrios Hector I 122 8.80 94=03 SprCorrdoröExplor¨PrcysBrÇ Clear pace, held gamely11å25= 6SA fst 1 23§ :47§ 1:12¨ 1:37© çMd Sp Wt 61k 78 4 /7 3¦ 1Ç 1ô 1© 1¤õ Berrios Hector I 122 2.00 86=11 SprCrrdr¤õMsstrl©öBnkSht©õ 2-3w,duel,widen,handly9Ý25= 2Dmr fst 6ôf 22 :45 1:10¦ 1:16© çMd Sp Wt 81k 64 4 /7 3 1Ç 2Ç 2§ 2«ö Berrios Hector I 122 4.60 82=11 BttlfRg«öSprCrrdr¨öBdMnnrs¦ô Outside winner, yield19Û25= 6Dmr fst 5f 21© :45¨ :58¦ çMd Sp Wt 82k 44 2 /9 6 4§ 4¨ô 4©ô 5«ö Berrios Hector I 122 2.30 87=07 LWllyóChrrCdr§õThnkYIndö Chased inside,weakened2-YEAR-OLD FILLYSpartan Equine Racing LLC, West Point Thoroughbreds, Robert C. The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA 16By David GreningTed Noffey wasn’t the only Grade 1-winning 2-year-old of 2025 named after a high-profile individual in the industry.Brant, named by owner Amr Zedan for Peter Brant, a publisher, art collector, and owner of high-class racehorses, went 2 for 3 with a victory in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity. His two wins, plus a game third in the Grade 1 FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Juvenile presented by the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance behind Ted Noffey, were enough to make Brant a finalist for the Eclipse Award in the 2-yearold male division.Brant, a son of Gun Runner out of the Liam’s Map mare Tynan, was bred in Kentucky by PTK LLC. He brought a record $3 million at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s 2-year-olds in training auction in March, when purchased by agent Donato Lanni on behalf of Zedan.“I mean he wasn’t a secret. He’s a pretty cool horse and everyone loved him,” Lanni told reporters after signing the ticket. “Just very lucky to get him for Amr Zedan. We always come here to look for nice horses, and he was a nice horse.”Brant, trained by Bob Baffert, debuted July 26 at Del Mar, where he received a dream trip behind dueling leaders, swung three wide turning for home, and won by 5 1/4 lengths in stylish fashion. His final time of 1:02.63 for 5 1/2 furlongs translated to a 101 Beyer Speed Figure, which would end up being the only triple-digit Beyer Speed Figure recorded by a 2-year-old of either gender in 2025.The quality of Brant’s maiden race was borne out later in the year as not only did he come back to win the Del Mar Futurity, but the third-, fourth-, and fifth-place finishers from the July 26 race – Balboa, Intrepido, and Conducted – all came back to become stakes winners at 2.In the Del Mar Futurity on Sept. 7, Brant, after breaking in at the start, sped to the lead under Flavien Prat and set fractions of 21.88 seconds and 44.53 before holding his stablemate Desert Gate at bay to win by a length. In giving Baffert a record-extending 19th Del Mar Futurity victory, Brant ran the fifth-fastest Del Mar Futurity – 1:21.92 – run at seven furlongs.Baffert felt Brant didn’t need another start before the Breeders’ Cup and brought him to the Juvenile fresh. Under Prat, Brant set the pace in the Juvenile, stalked intently by Ted Noffey. The latter took over from Brant in upper stretch, and Brant appeared to battle back but was ultimately no match for Ted Noffey and then lost second by a half-length to Mr. A. P.Brant will winter in Southern California with Baffert and was expected to start breezing in mid-to-late January to prepare for his 3-year-old campaign.BrantOwn: Zedan Racing Stables IncGr/ro. c. 2 (Feb) OBSMAR25 $3,000,000Sire: Gun Runner (Candy Ride*Arg) $250,000Dam:Tynan (Liam's Map)Br: PTK, LLC (Ky)Tr: Baffert Bob (0 0 0 0 .00) 2025 :(338 103 .30)Life 3 2 0 1 $408,000 1012025 3 2 0 1 $408,000 1012024 0 M 0 0 $0 -0 0 0 0 $0 -D.Fst 3 2 0 1 $408,000 101Wet(467) 0 0 0 0 $0 -Synth(321) $0Turf(277) 0 0 0 0 $0 -Dst(0) 0 0 0 0 $0 -31å25= 9Dmr fst 1Â 23§ :46© 1:10© 1:42¦ BCJuvnle-G1 95 5 /6 1¦ô 1ô 1ô 2¦ 3¦ô Prat F 122 1.70 99=03 Ted Noffey¦Mr. A. The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA 18By David GreningGstaad, a town in southern Switzerland, is described as a popular destination amongst high society and the international jet set.In 2025, Gstaad, the 2-year-old colt bred in England, was a popular horse amongst bettors and raced productively, if not always successfully, on the international stage. After narrow defeats as the favorite in Group 1 stakes in France, Ireland, and England, Gstaad scored his breakthrough victory in Southern California, taking the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf on Oct. 31 at Del Mar. It was a victory that landed Gstaad a spot as a finalist for the Eclipse Award in the 2-year-old male division.True, Gstaad was expected to win the Juvenile Turf, but it wasn’t as easy as many pundits expected. Part of that was due to having to overcome the outside post in a 14-horse field and a bit of a slow start under jockey Christophe Soumillon. After settling nicely down the backstretch, Gstaad rallied with acceleration while widest of all in the stretch. He outfinished rail-rallying 58-1 longshot Stark Contrast to win by three-quarters of a length.Gstaad not only gave trainer Aidan O’Brien his record-extending eighth victory in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, he gave O’Brien his 21st Breeders’ Cup victory, which broke a tie for most wins in the 42-year-old series with D. Wayne Lukas, who died four months earlier. (Bob Baffert tied O’Brien the following day with two winners.)“He is a very special horse,” O’Brien said in an interview following the Breeders’ Cup. “He’s big and powerful. Obviously, we thought he would have won a couple Group 1s at this stage. Things just didn’t work out – little things went against him. It’s a testament to him. He kept himself well, kept himself thriving and doing.”Gstaad, bred by Maywood Stud, is a son of Starspangledbanner and was purchased for $596,488 as a weanling at the Tattersalls December 2023 sale. He was bought and campaigned by the Coolmore connections of Derrick Smith, Mrs. John Magnier, and Michael Tabor. Gstaad is a half-brother to multiple Group 1 winner Vandeek.Gstaad began his career in the spring and won his first starts, including the Group 2 Coventry Stakes in June at Royal Ascot, a race he won by three lengths in a field of 20. Gstaad then came up just short in three Group 1 stakes, losing the Prix Morny by a neck at Deauville, the Vincent O’Brien National by a head at The Curragh, and the Dewhurst by three-quarters of a length at Newmarket.“I was a bit upset on his last race because I think I would probably make a mistake to try to cover him,” said Soumillon, who picked up the colt midseason when regular rider Ryan Moore was injured. “I’m sure he should have won one or two more Group 1s this season in Europe. So that will make him one of the best we’ve seen here.”In 2026, Gstaad will likely be aimed at the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket in May, a race O’Brien has won a record 10 times.2-YEAR-OLD MALE(GB)Gstaad (GB)Own: Smith Derrick, Magnier, Mrs. John andDk. b or b. c. 2 (Mar)Sire: Starspangledbanner*Aus (Choisir*Aus) $46,600Dam:Mosa Mine*GB (Exceed And Excel*Aus)Br: Maywood Stud (GB)Tr: O'Brien Aidan P (0 0 0 0 .00) 2025 :(8 1 .12)Life 6 3 3 0 $993,157 882025 6 3 3 0 $993,157 882024 0 M 0 0 $0 -0 0 0 0 $0 -D.Fst 0 0 0 0 $0 -Wet(395*) 0 0 0 0 $0 -Synth(316) $0Turf(359) 6 3 3 0 $993,157 88Dst(0) 0 0 0 0 $0 -31å25=10Dmr fm 1 ê 22¦ :46§ 1:11§ 1:34© BCJuvTrf-G1 88 14/14 9¬õ 7«ô 5§õ 1ô 1ö Soumillon C 122 *1.20 89=14 GstdöStrkContrst§õNorthCst¦õ Stp slw,3-4w,prvd best11å25 Newmarket(GB) gf 7f ê Str 1:23¦ Dewhurst S.-G1 9 2ö Soumillon C 129 *1.75 GewanöGstaad¦ôDistant Stormö Timeform Rating: 105 Stk 667900 Rally in tight2f out, pressed winner final furlong, gamely 14æ25 Curragh (Ire) yl 7f ê Str 1:26¨ Vincent OBrien National S.-G1 6 2Ç Soumillon C 131 *.90 ZavateriÇGstaad§ôItalyªô Timeform Rating: 102 Stk 469400 Bumpdst., bid2f out, disputed with winner1f out, just failed 24Ý25 Deauville(Fr) fm Í6f ê Str 1:08¦ Prix Morny-G1 6 2É Moore R L 126 *1.20 Venetian SunÉGstaadôWise Approach§ Timeform Rating: 101 Stk 410300 Led, headed, chased, tooksecond close home17Þ25 Ascot(GB) gf 6f ê Str 1:13§ Coventry S.-G2 20 1¨ Moore R L 129 *3.50 Gstaad¨Do Or Do NotÉCoppullô Timeform Rating: 94 Stk 237600 Smooth rally, led overall final furlong, won going away, readily 17Ü25 Navan(Ire) gd 6f ê LH 1:12¦ Irish Stallion Farms EBF 10 1ö Hayes C D 133 7.00 GstaadöTrue Love¨öHavana Annaô Timeform Rating: 81 Maiden 20100 Midfield, wentsecond1f out, shaken up and ran on wellDerrick Smith, Mrs. John Magnier, and Michael B. The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA 20By David GreningNed Toffey had a simple request when he learned that his boss Erik Gustavson decided to name a horse in his honor.“I just hope he can run faster than me,” Toffey said at Saratoga the day before Ted Noffey made his debut.Wish granted. Not only could Ted Noffey run faster than Ned Toffey, he also was faster than every other horse who lined up against him in the starting gate. Ted Noffey went 4 for 4 with three Grade 1 stakes wins capped by a one-length victory in the Grade 1 FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Juvenile presented by the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance. That résumé figures to earn Ted Noffey an Eclipse Award as North America’s champion 2-year-old male.Ted Noffey is a son of Into Mischief, a sire who stands at Spendthrift Farm, owned by Gustavson and where Ned Toffey is the general manager. In 2024, Toffey was chosen as Kentucky’s farm manager of the year. An industry publication, in a post on X promoting a story about the honor, mistakenly identified Ned Toffey as Ted Noffey and thus the origination of the name.Ted Noffey, out of the Old Fashioned mare Streak of Luck, was bred in Kentucky by Aaron and Marie Jones LLC and purchased by Spendthrift for $650,000 at the 2024 Keeneland September yearling sale. The horse was turned over to trainer Todd Pletcher, who had Ted Noffey impeccably prepared for his debut at Saratoga, which came in the first race on the Aug. 2 Whitney Stakes Day program.Breaking from the outside post under John Velazquez, Ted Noffey stalked the pace from fourth, confronted the pacesetting favorite Tagermeen at the quarter pole, and drew clear in the final furlong. That outside stalking trip was repeated by Ted Noffey in the Grade 1 Spendthrift Farm Hopeful Stakes on Sept. 1, when he ran away from the competition in the stretch to win by 8 1/2 lengths. As well as Ted Noffey had run in his two one-turn races, Pletcher said he was really looking forward to stretching him out around two turns. The first opportunity to do that came in the Grade 1 Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity on Oct. 5 at Keeneland, where, for the third straight race, Ted Noffey drew the outside post, worked out an outside stalking trip, and ran away from his rivals to win by 2 3/4 lengths. The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, on Oct. 31 at Del Mar, scratched down to a six-horse field. Yet again, Ted Noffey had the outside post and made the most of it. He stalked the pacesetting Grade 1 winner Brant, took over from him in upper stretch, and held off a resurgent Brant and then Mr. A. P. to win the Juvenile by one length. Perhaps the most notable part of the victory was the way Ted Noffey galloped out afterward as Velazquez needed assistance from the outrider to pull him up.Ted Noffey will winter in South Florida with the idea of using two races, likely the Fountain of Youth and Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park, as preps prior to a start in the Kentucky Derby.Ted NoffeyOwn: Spendthrift Farm LLCGr/ro. c. 2 (Jan) KEESEP24 $650,000Sire: Into Mischief (Harlan's Holiday) $250,000Dam:Streak of Luck (Old Fashioned)Br: Aaron & Marie Jones LLC (Ky)Tr: Pletcher Todd A (48 8 16 7 .17) 2025 :(729 142 .19)Life 4 4 0 0 $1,657,963 982025 4 4 0 0 $1,657,963 982024 0 M 0 0 $0 -0 0 0 0 $0 -D.Fst 4 4 0 0 $1,657,963 98Wet(387) 0 0 0 0 $0 -Synth(338) $0Turf(304) 0 0 0 0 $0 -Dst(0) 0 0 0 0 $0 -31å25= 9Dmr fst 1Â 23§ :46© 1:10© 1:42¦ BCJuvnle-G1 97 6 /6 2¦ô 2ô 2ô 1¦ 1¦ Velazquez J R 122 *.80 101=03 Ted Noffey¦Mr. A. 22 The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRABy Matt HegartyBefore the term “social license” made its way into racing’s vernacular, there was Bob Duncan. The longtime starter at tracks operated by the New York Racing Association until his retirement in 2004, Duncan was the chief of crews responsible for getting often-fractious horses into the gate without peril to life and limb, both human and equine. For decades at tracks across the United States, the tactics used to get those horses into the gate and keep them there were often coercive, despite millions of years of evolution honing horses’s flight instinct in the face of danger (it’s why they run so fast).Duncan thought there was a better way. Building on work advanced by those leading a new movement in behavioral modeling in horses and other livestock, Duncan taught often reluctant crew members to ditch the blindfolds and whips to favor more soothing approaches, not only in the high-pitched racing environment, but also in the morning schooling programs designed to accustom horses to the process. While progress was hard-won, Duncan’s new tactics unquestionably worked. And for that accomplishment, Duncan is being awarded a Special Eclipse for Career Excellence.“Bob revolutionized the starting gate process over his 50-year tenure,” said Todd Pletcher, the Hall of Fame trainer based in New York for the past three decades. “He was the first to introduce more humane, behaviorally informed practices in his running of the gate-schooling and starting-gate program, establishing a model now emulated internationally. He led the charge in urging the industry to use natural horsemanship, not only at the gate, but throughout all elements of the training, racing, and breeding process.”When Duncan retired from NYRA, it was primarily because his work had begun to garner international attention. He formed a consultancy, and he was summoned to private yards and racetracks around the world to teach the new way.“These last 25 years I’ve been apologizing for what I did the first 20,” Duncan told the Thoroughbred Daily News in 2025. “You didn’t know any better. You’re following tradition, being told what to do, there’s peer pressure.“I remember trying things and my foreman saying, ‘You got to show that horse who’s boss.’ It was coercion. It put the horse between a rock and a hard place: He doesn’t want to be in there, but is even more scared by that buggy whip out back. It’s like going into kindergarten and nobody talks your language. And when the teacher yells at you, and you don’t understand, they start hitting you.”Back in the 1990s, when Duncan began teaching his new tactics, horse racing was not under the unblinking eye of animal-welfare advocates. That makes his commitment to changing the experience of horses all the more special. He wasn’t trying to address outside critics or improve the sport’s “social license,” that term coined in the late 90s describing an industry’s stock with the public due to its current practices. Instead, he was attempting to change the sport from within, for the sole betterment of the horses that make so many dreams come true.SPECIAL AWARDBob DuncanBarBara D. Livingston

PROUDLY CONGRATULATESYEDSIT HAZLEWOOD2025 ECLIPSE AWARD FINALISTOUTSTANDING APPRENTICE JOCKEYTHE MARYLAND JOCKEY CLUB

24 The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRAAPPRENTICE JOCKEY FINALISTSBy Mary RampelliniChristopher Elliott had a family reputation to uphold when he launched his riding career, as he is the son of a Kentucky Derby-winning jockey in Stewart Elliott.Suffice it to say, he has done the name proud.Christopher Elliott is an Eclipse Award finalist for outstanding apprentice jockey of 2025 for a season in which he ranked third in mount earnings among his peers and fourth in wins, all while having stakes success in New York, New Jersey, and Iowa. Elliott is a 19-year-old native of Red Bank, N.J., whose father is best known for winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes aboard Smarty Jones. The younger Elliott won his first race on April 21, 2024, at Lone Star Park and had his apprentice allowance through July 19, 2025. During the period he rode as an apprentice in 2025, he won 82 races from 602 starts, amassing mount earnings of $3,831,670.Elliott’s overall apprentice career yielded 139 wins and mount earnings of $5.7 million. His four stakes wins as an apprentice included the Rick Violette by a neck aboard Leon Blue on July 17 at Saratoga.“The stakes win at Saratoga was huge,” said agent Jose Santos Jr., the son of Kentucky Derby-winning rider Jose Santos. “It was the week before he lost his apprenticeship – and a stretch duel with Flavien Prat in a turf stakes! I mean, it’s hard enough to get stakes mounts at Saratoga for any rider, so to get one as an apprentice and then pull off the win was huge.”Other highlights for Elliott in 2025 included a three-win day June 21 at Aqueduct, during which he won a division of the New York Stallion Stakes.CHRISTOPHER ELLIOTTBy Mary RampelliniYedsit Hazlewood continued Maryland’s rich tradition of showcasing young riding talent, as the Laurel Park title winner has been voted an Eclipse Award finalist for outstanding apprentice jockey of 2025.Hazlewood ranked as North America’s second-leading apprentice in both wins and mount earnings last year. He compiled a record of 131 wins from 570 starts, earning $4,263,751.The 17-year-old native of Panama had an exceptional amount of success in Maryland. He won the Laurel fall title with 73 wins, which was 38 more than the secondleading jockey. At one point, Hazlewood won at least one race on 23 consecutive cards.Hazlewood also celebrated a trio of fourwin days on the Maryland circuit. They included the Maryland Million program at Laurel, on which he won both the Nursery with Big Cuddle and the Distaff with Onyx Ten.“This is my house,” Hazlewood said last year. “I like it here.”The accomplishments led to Hazlewood being named the year’s leading jockey at tracks operated by the Maryland Jockey Club. Hazlewood achieved much of his success after returning from injuries sustained in a June car accident. He returned to action in August.“The accident helped me to be able to understand and be more mature about this,” Hazlewood said through a translator. “To get an opportunity like this, you will never get it again, and you don’t want it to waste it.”During his apprenticeship season in 2025, Hazlewood also registered stakes wins at Parx Racing and Penn National.YEDSIT HAZLEWOODBy Mary RampelliniPietro Moran racked up enough wins and earnings in 2025 to get the nod as an Eclipse Award finalist for North America’s outstanding apprentice jockey, but one victory stood out – the $1 million King’s Plate.Moran guided Mansetti to a front-running win in Canada’s premier race for 3-year-olds, which is held at Woodbine. That’s where Moran finished second in the overall standings last year, and the success lifted the rider to a 2025 record of 140 wins from 863 starts for mount earnings of $6,083,835. Moran’s numbers were tops among all North American-based apprentices in 2025.The 20-year-old won his first race on Oct. 14, 2023, at Woodbine and was scheduled to have his apprentice allowance through Jan. 6, 2026, because of time lost to an injury. He is currently wintering at Turfway Park and will return to Woodbine, according to his Canada-based agent, Tom Patton.Moran is a native of Ireland and a citizen of Canada. He is the son of jockey David Moran, whom he competed against in the King’s Plate. Pietro’s brother Will is an outrider who brought Mansetti back to the winner’s enclosure after the King’s Plate.“I can’t believe it. There’s no words to describe it. It’s a dream,” Pietro Moran said after the race. “My dad said he’s so proud of me. It’s a special moment. I watched my first Plate live 15 years ago when my dad finished third. I’ve watched it ever since and I’ve been dreaming of this moment. I can’t believe it came this soon.”PIETRO MORAN

The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA 26By Brad FreeBefore she launched her 3-year-old campaign in 2025, Good Cheer already was famous. After all, she won all four starts in 2024 and was an Eclipse Award finalist for champion 2-year-old filly. The award went to Good Cheer’s 4-for-4 stablemate Immersive.Roles reversed in 2025. Good Cheer rose to the head of the class for trainer Brad Cox and owner-breeder Godolphin. Following a 2025 campaign highlighted by a decisive victory in the Grade 1 Longines Kentucky Oaks, Good Cheer is an Eclipse finalist again, this time for champion 3-year-old filly.Good Cheer’s bloodlines are stellar. She is by Medaglia d’Oro and produced by Grade 1 winner Wedding Toast, a Godolphin-owned Eclipse finalist for champion dirt female in 2015. Good Cheer is the fourth, and best, runner produced by Wedding Toast. After a short winter break, Good Cheer launched her 3-year-old campaign in February at Fair Grounds. With regular rider Luis Saez aboard, Good Cheer ran as expected in the Grade 2 Rachel Alexandra. She tucked inside, waited for room, angled out, and crushed by 6 1/4 lengths.“She did it pretty easy,” Saez said afterward. “We knew we had the best horse in race, and she got a little schooling today.” The comeback win gave Saez and Cox confidence to continue toward the main objective.“We’re very proud of her and very excited about her moving forward on the road to the Kentucky Oaks,” Cox said. Good Cheer, 5 for 5, stayed at Fair Grounds for her Kentucky Oaks prep in the Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks on March 22.Odds-on in an eight-runner field, Good Cheer ran away by 3 1/2 lengths. The timing was perfect. It gave Good Cheer six weeks until the Kentucky Oaks, one of the season’s most important stakes for fillies.Favored at 1.39-1 in the Kentucky Oaks, Good Cheer and Saez broke from post 10 in the 13-runner field. Saez kept Good Cheer out in the clear, wide in eighth. She rallied wide on the far turn and drew off by 2 1/4 lengths over a track listed wet-fast.Good Cheer is the third Kentucky Oaks winner by Medaglia d’Oro, joining Rachel Alexandra (2009) and Plum Pretty (2011). Good Cheer also joined a select list of undefeated Kentucky Oaks winners. Good Cheer, Malathaat (2021), and Tiffany Lass (1986) are the only undefeated Oaks winners in the past 40 years. The win streak by Good Cheer ended at seven. Her season ended with a sixth-place finish in the Grade 1 Cotillion at Parx Racing.Good Cheer won three races and $1,430,600 from six starts in 2025; overall she has won seven races and $1,888,320 from 10 starts. The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA 28By Brad FreeA promising maiden filly at the start of the season, Nitrogen rose to the head of her class in 2025 by building an exceptional multisurface résumé worthy of Eclipse Award consideration as the nation’s outstanding 3-year-old filly. It was trainer Mark Casse who came up with her name. Even before Nitrogen ran, Casse said he believed the filly “breathes different air.” Bred by her owner, D. J. Stable, the Medaglia d’Oro filly produced a different campaign in 2025. She won six stakes and excelled on every surface she raced over – turf listed firm and good, dirt listed sloppy and fast.It turns out footing did not matter for Nitrogen, whose juvenile campaign in 2024 suggested she was a turf specialist. Her first three starts were on turf – runner-up in her debut against maidens, followed by a pair of third-place finishes in Grade 1 races, including the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar. The best was yet to come in 2025.Nitrogen launched her 3-year-old campaign in early January on turf at Gulfstream Park. She won the $150,000 Ginger Brew Stakes under Jose Ortiz, her jockey in each of her last 10 starts. After a two-month break, Nitrogen resumed her campaign by winning the Grade 3 Florida Oaks in March at Tampa Bay Downs. She was just getting started. After Grade 2 wins on turf at Keeneland and Churchill Downs, Nitrogen shipped to Saratoga for the Wonder Again Stakes, a Grade 2 scheduled to be run on turf. Due to rain, the race was moved to the Saratoga dirt track, listed sloppy. Nitrogen had never raced on dirt.Casse and the D. J. Stable father-son team of Leonard and Jonathan Green considered scratching Nitrogen from the Wonder Again, which was downgraded to a Grade 3 due to the surface switch. Casse and the Greens rolled the dice and kept Nitrogen in the race. She defeated two rivals by 17 lengths for her fifth straight stakes.Nitrogen returned to turf in the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks Invitational in July at Saratoga. She missed by a nose, then switched back to dirt for her final three starts. A good call by Casse and the Greens.Nitrogen scored a decisive victory over Kentucky Oaks winner Good Cheer in the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes presented by Keeneland Sales at Saratoga, then met older fillies and mares for the first time in the Grade 1 Juddmonte Spinster Stakes in October at Keeneland in a prep for Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff.Nitrogen ran well in the Spinster, finishing second by a head to Gin Gin. It was on to Del Mar for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Nitrogen broke from the rail, raced in fourth position, launched a bid at pacesetting winner Scylla, and finished second. It was an outstanding run to cap an outstanding campaign.Nitrogen won six races from nine starts in 2025, finished second three times, and earned $1,909,400. Her career totals: six wins from 12 starts and $2,046,604. Plans call for Nitrogen to campaign as a 4-year-old in 2026.NitrogenOwn: D. J. The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA 30By Brad FreeShisospicy was red-hot in 2025. The front-running gray won four stakes and made history by becoming the first 3-year-old filly to win the Prevagen Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. Her gate-to-wire win produced the biggest win margin in the 18-year history of the race. The 2 1/2-length victory capped an ambitious campaign by Shisospicy, an Eclipse Award finalist as champion 3-year-old filly, female sprinter, and female turf horse.Shisospicy, trained by Jose D’Angelo and owned by Morplay Racing LLC and Qatar Racing LLC, never stayed in one place for long in 2025. Her seven starts were at seven tracks in four states and two countries. However, the season did not start well.Following a 2024 campaign in which she won 1 of 2 starts on dirt, Shisospicy returned in January 2025. She was favored to win the Mockingbird Stakes, a dirt sprint for fillies at Oaklawn Park. Shisospicy pressed the pace, opened up, and got worn down. That was it for dirt.Shisospicy subsequently switched to turf and went on a tear. She wired an allowance sprint in February at Gulfstream Park, then met stakes fillies at Keeneland. Favored in the Limestone Stakes in April, Shisospicy sped to the lead and won by a half-length. A month later, she was favored again, this time in the Grade 3 Mamzelle Stakes at Churchill Downs.Jose Ortiz subbed for regular rider Irad Ortiz Jr., and Shisospicy crushed. She pressed the pace, took command, and drew off by 4 1/4 lengths. With her first graded stakes win, the filly’s value surged.Shisospicy began her career for Morplay, which was founded by Rich Mendez with son Josh. Shisospicy, by Mitole and bred in Kentucky by Bill and Corrine Heiligbrodt, was initially purchased as a yearling for $200,000 by Mendez associates Randy Hartley and Dean DeRenzo. Morplay subsequently acquired ownership and took on a partner after the Mamzelle. Shisospicy made her final three starts in 2025 for Morplay and Qatar Racing. In June, Shisospicy shipped to Royal Ascot for the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup for 3-year-olds of either gender. It was a lot to ask. Shisospicy contested the pace and faded to 15th. Time to regroup. By September, Shisospicy had trained well for D’Angelo, and was ready to go.In the Grade 2 Music City Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Kentucky Downs, reunited with regular rider Irad Ortiz Jr., Shisospicy returned to form. She dueled early and ran away late to win by three lengths. It was time to swing for the fences.Shisospicy shipped to Del Mar for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, a race in which 3-year-old fillies had gone 0 for 8. Shisospicy ran them off their feet. She sped to the lead inside, took heat, and widened.Following the Breeders’ Cup, the Morplay-Qatar partnership was dissolved at the Fasig-Tipton November sale. Although Shisospicy did not meet her $5.2 million reserve, Morplay bought out Qatar to regain full ownership.Shisospicy won five races and $2,044,645 in 2025. She is the first Grade 1 winner sired by Mitole, the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner and Eclipse Award winner as outstanding sprinter. Plans call for Shisospicy to campaign as a 4-year-old in 2026.ShisospicyOwn: Morplay Racing LLC and Qatar Racing,Gr/ro. f. 3 (Mar) FTKNOV25 $5,200,000Sire: Mitole (Eskendereya) $10,000Dam:Mischief Galore (Into Mischief)Br: Bill Heiligbrodt & Corinne Heiligbrodt (Ky)Tr: D'Angelo Jose F (3 1 0 0 .33) 2025 :(764 151 .20)Life 9 6 1 1 $2,090,270 1052025 7 5 1 0 $2,044,645 1052024 2 1 0 1 $45,625 800 0 0 0 $0 -D.Fst 3 1 1 1 $72,625 85Wet(407) 0 0 0 0 $0 -Synth(299) $0Turf(287) 6 5 0 0 $2,017,645 105Dst(0) 0 0 0 0 $0 -1ä25= 5Dmr fm 5f ê C 21¨ :43© :55¦ 3Î BCTrfSpt-G1 105 9 /12 1 1¦ 1§ 1¨ 1§ô Ortiz I Jr 121 b 5.30 101 - Shisospicy§ôAgBulletôKhdm¦ Pace inside, drew away6æ25= 9KD gd 6ôf ê ý 21© :44§ 1:08§ 1:14§ çMusicCty-G2 92 10/12 1 2Ç 1Ç 1¨ 1¨ Ortiz I Jr 120 b 3.21 98=03 Shisospicy¨Cloe¦õTabitiô Inside, kicked clear20Þ25 Ascot(GB) gf 6f ê Str 1:12 Commonwealth Cup-G1 21 15¬ö Murphy O 125 b 10.00 Time For SandalsÉArizona BlazeôRayevkaô Timeform Rating: 85 Stk 977500 Ducked leftst., led group, headed1f out, weakened final1f10Ü25=10CD fm 5ôf ê 21¨ :44 :55§ 1:01§ çMamzelle-G3 90 9 /13 2 2ô 2Ç 1¦ 1©õ Ortiz J L 120 b *1.40 100 - Shisospicy©õKilwin§õMechayaô Vied 2wd,drew off 1/811ß25= 7Kee gd 5ôf ê 21§ :44© :57 1:03© çLimestoneL293k 84 6 /12 1 1ô 1ô 1§ô 1ô Ortiz I Jr 118 b *2.15 86=14 ShisospicyôDreamwyôAbientotó 2p,cleared 1/4,lasted5á25= 5GP fm 5f ê 21¦ :43§ :54© çOC 75k/N1X -N 86 3 /7 4 1ô 1¦ 1¦ô 1§ö Ortiz I Jr L120 b *.80 96=04 Shsspcy§öLAmzn¦öThnkfllyÇ Pace 2wd,drew off,drvg4â25= 7OP fst 6f 21¨ :45§ :57© 1:10§ çMckngbirdB150k 85 7 /9 1 2¦ô 1ô 1¨ô 2¦ Prat F 119 b *.40 90=12 GWsGirl¦ShisospicyªõChtter¬ Took over, clear, caughtBarBara D. 88 YEARS AND RUNNING.MCCAULEYSFEEDS.COM | 1.800.222.8635

The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA 32By David GreningFor Baeza, success as a 3-year-old runs in the family.Baeza, a half-brother to 2023 Kentucky Derby winner Mage and 2024 Belmont Stakes winner Dornoch, carried on the family tradition of Grade 1 success as a 3-year-old when he captured the Pennsylvania Derby. That win, combined with third-place finishes in the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve and the Belmont Stakes presented by NYRA Bets, in addition to three additional graded stakes placings, earned Baeza a nod as a finalist for the Eclipse Award in the 3-year-old male division.Mage had won the Kentucky Derby but Dornoch had yet to show himself when Baeza, then an unnamed son of McKinzie, went through the Keeneland sales ring in September 2023. He brought $1.2 million. Baeza is owned by Lee and Susan Searing’s C R K Stable and Robert Clay’s Grandview Equine, the latter also being Baeza’s breeder.Trained by John Shirreffs, Baeza made one start as a 2-year-old, that coming on turf, where he finished ninth. Switched to dirt, Baeza finished second in a maiden race at Santa Anita before clearing the maiden ranks by 4 3/4 lengths on Feb 14. With the Derby trail beckoning, Baeza went right into the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby, where his runner-up finish, three-quarters of a length behind Journalism, had some pundits believing he could win the Kentucky Derby.Due to a lack of sufficient qualifying points, Baeza remained on the outside looking in at the Derby until two days before the race, when a scratch allowed him into the field. Baeza didn’t have the smoothest of trips in the Derby, but he made a late and wide rally in the stretch, finishing third, beaten 1 1/2 lengths by Sovereignty while missing second to Journalism by a neck.Baeza skipped the Preakness and returned home to Southern California before shipping back east for the Belmont at Saratoga. Baeza did not fire like many had expected and finished a well-beaten third, again finishing behind Sovereignty and Journalism.Undeterred, Baeza was game to take Sovereignty on again in the Grade 2 Jim Dandy. From the three-eighths pole to the sixteenth pole, Baeza ran with Sovereignty but had to settle for second best, this time beaten one length.Without Sovereignty and Journalism in the field, Baeza was sent off as the favorite in the Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby on Sept. 20 at Parx Racing. Eighth early on, Baeza swooped past the field under Hector Berrios and won by 2 1/4 lengths. The Pennsylvania Derby victory looks stronger when one considers that runner-up Magnitude came back to beat older horses in the Grade 2 Clark on Nov. 28 at Churchill Downs and third-place finisher Goal Oriented won the Grade 1 Malibu for 3-year-olds on Dec. 26 at Santa Anita. Meanwhile, Baeza came back in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic, where, after a slow start, he ultimately finished sixth, 9 1/2 lengths behind Forever Young.Baeza will remain in training in 2026. As of New Year’s Day, he had been galloping for two weeks with a tentative return to the races planned for March, Shirreffs said.BaezaOwn: C R K Stable LLC and Grandview EquineB. c. 3 (May) KEESEP23 $1,200,000Sire: McKinzie (Street Sense) $75,000Dam:Puca (Big Brown)Br: Grandview Equine (Ky)Tr: Shirreffs John A (0 0 0 0 .00) 2025 :(76 11 .14)Life 9 2 3 2 $1,643,500 1052025 8 2 3 2 $1,643,000 1052024 1 M 0 0 $500 600 0 0 0 $0 -D.Fst 6 2 3 0 $943,000 105Wet(300) 2 0 0 2 $700,000 102Synth(285) $0Turf(227) 1 0 0 0 $500 60Dst(0) 0 0 0 0 $0 -1ä25= 9Dmr fst 1² 45© 1:10§ 1:35¨ 2:00 3Î BCClasic-G1 98 2 /9 8«ô 8¬ô 6§ô 6¬ 6®ô Berrios Hector I 122 b 7.10 86 - ForvrYoungôSirrLon¦Fircnss§õ Hop,3-2w,5-4w,flatten20æ25=14Prx fst 1° ý 46¨ 1:10§ 1:35¦ 1:48 PaDerby-G1 105 8 /10 8ª 7©ö 7§ô 1¦ô 1§õ Berrios Hector I 120 b *1.40 103=01 Baeza§õMagnitude§GolOriented¦ö 3p,bid4w,mild drive26Û25=10Sar fst 1° ÿ 48§ 1:12§ 1:36© 1:49§ JimDandy-G2 103 1 /5 3¦ô 2¦ 2ô 2ô 2¦ Berrios Hector I 120 b 3.10 91=10 Sovereignty¦Baeza®õHillRodó Carry 4w 1/2, 2nd best7Þ25=13Sar gd 1² 47¨ 1:12¦ 1:36¨ 2:00¨ Belmont-G1 100 6 /8 6¨õ 6§ö 5¨ô 4«ô 3«ô Prat F 126 b 3.50 93=04 Sovereignty¨Journalism¨ôBaez¦ö 5-6w upper, kept on3Ü25=12CD slyø 1² ý 46¦ 1:10¨ 1:36© 2:02¦ KyDerby-G1 102 19/19 14«ö 15¦¦ 7§ö 4© 3¦ö Prat F 126 b 13.86 94=10 Sovereignty¦ôJournlismÉBz§ô Stdy btw5/16,9p1/8,bid5ß25=10SA fst 1° 47 1:11§ 1:37 1:49§ SADerby-G1 101 5 /5 5¨ô 3¦ 2¦ 1¦ 2ö Berrios Hector I 124 b 14.30 90=15 JournalismöBez¤ôWestwoodô 4w,bid3w2nd,led,gamely14á25= 6SA fst 1 22© :46© 1:12§ 1:37© Md Sp Wt 60k 93 5 /6 2ô 2ô 1ô 1§ô 1©ö Berrios Hector I L121 b 2.20 86=19 Baez©öMellencmp¦õWestwood¬ô 4-2w,prss,clr,drftd in4â25= 2SA fst 1 22© :46¦ 1:10¦ 1:35© Md Sp Wt 60k 87 5 /6 3¦ô 3§ 3¦ô 2¨ô 2¬ Berrios Hector I L121 b 15.70 89=08 Rodriguez¬BaezaôRank¬ô Stalked3wd,bested restBarBara D. The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA 34By David GreningIt was not fake news to say Journalism was alive and well and thriving in the United States in 2025.Journalism had a robust eight-race, well-traveled, and very successful campaign, winning three Grade 1 stakes – highlighted by a dramatic Preakness victory – and finishing second in both the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve and Belmont Stakes presented by NYRA Bets. His accomplishments earned him a spot as a finalist for the Eclipse Award in the 3-year-old male division.Journalism, a son of Curlin bred in Kentucky by Don Alberto Corp., was an $825,000 yearling purchase at the 2023 Fasig-Tipton sale in Saratoga. He was campaigned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Bridlewood Farm, Don Alberto Stable, Robert LaPenta, Elayne Stables Five, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael B. Tabor, and Derrick Smith and trained by Michael McCarthy. On a Southern California circuit where trainer Bob Baffert is typically stacked in the 3-year-old division, Journalism proved the best in the West. He began the year with a powerful 1 3/4-length victory in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes over the Baffert duo of Barnes and Rodriguez. A month later, in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby, Journalism overcame getting shuffled back to last in a five-horse field before rallying to win by three-quarters of a length.Sent off the favorite in the 19-horse Kentucky Derby, Journalism got pinched back to 10th early and rallied to take the lead before getting run down by Sovereignty, settling for second. While Sovereignty skipped the Preakness, Journalism went off as the even-money favorite. In upper stretch, things got scary for Journalism as he bumped hard with Goal Oriented and Clever Again while Gosger opened up a five-length advantage. Journalism, ridden by Umberto Rispoli, was unfazed, kept on running, lengthened his stride, and reeled in Gosger late to win by threequarters of a length.“What happened today is almost surreal. You don’t see that happen, it’s hard to explain,” McCarthy said after the Preakness. “This horse, I think he showed today he’s a gift from above.”Journalism still had more to give.Three weeks later, in the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga, Journalism gave another gallant effort only to again finish second to Sovereignty by three lengths. Journalism was the only horse to compete in all three legs of the Triple Crown. After a return home to California, Journalism shipped east again for the Grade 1 NYRA Bets Haskell at Monmouth Park. Early on, it looked as though the Triple Crown and traveling might have caught up to Journalism as he was seventh of eight early. Once again, in the stretch, Journalism found another gear and was able to outfinish his Preakness nemesis Gosger to win by a half-length.Back home in California, Journalism challenged older horses in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic at Del Mar, where he finished second to the 4-year-old Fierceness. Journalism capped his hearty campaign by running in the Grade 1 Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic, finishing fourth, 3 3/4 lengths behind Forever Young. The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA 36By David GreningSovereignty ruled the 3-year-old division in 2025.A Godolphin homebred son of Into Mischief trained by Bill Mott, Sovereignty won five graded stakes in 2025, including the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve, the Belmont Stakes presented by NYRA Bets, and the DraftKings Travers Stakes – all Grade 1 races run at 1 1/4 miles. Those wins, coupled with victories in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth and Grade 2 Jim Dandy, not only make him the favorite to be voted champion 3-year-old male but make him a top contender for Horse of the Year. There were only two disappointments for Sovereignty in 2025. The first came in the Grade 1 Curlin Florida Derby presented by Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms at Xalapa at Gulfstream Park, where he finished second to Tappan Street. The second came in October at Del Mar, where Sovereignty had to be scratched from the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic due to a fever.Coincidentally, an illness delayed Sovereignty’s 3-year-old debut, which came in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth on March 1, a race he won by a neck over River Thames.Four weeks later, in the Florida Derby, Sovereignty had the outside post in the 10-horse field and needed a substitute rider, as regular jockey Junior Alvarado was injured in a spill six days before the race. While jockey Manny Franco did nothing wrong in the Florida Derby, he did impart to Mott that Sovereignty appeared to lose his action around the far turn, which could have led to his defeat.Sovereignty did not lose again.Despite clipping heels soon after the start of the Kentucky Derby, Sovereignty had a relatively clean trip, rallying from 16th in the 19-horse field and splashing his way to a 1 1/2-length victory over favored Journalism.A few days later, Godolphin representatives and Mott announced that Sovereignty would skip the Preakness to focus on the Belmont Stakes and a summer campaign.A fresh Sovereignty awaited Preakness winner Journalism at Saratoga for the Belmont Stakes. Racing closer to the pace than anticipated under Junior Alvarado, Sovereignty galloped to a threelength victory, again beating Journalism. That newfound running style became the norm for Sovereignty, who in the Grade 2 Jim Dandy defeated Baeza – third in the Kentucky Derby and Belmont – by one length, edging clear from him late. There were few willing opponents for Sovereignty in the Travers Stakes on Aug. 23 at Saratoga. Sent off as the 3-10 favorite, Sovereignty galloped to a 10-length victory over Bracket Buster. The margin of victory tied for the fourth largest in the 156-year history of the race, and the final time of 2:00.89 equaled the fifth fastest.“His races have been very, very impressive,” Mott said after the Travers. “The final furlong of this race was very good, probably equal to the [Kentucky] Derby. The Derby, the way it was run and on such a sloppy track and he had to overcome so much, [18] horses. [It was] a much smaller field today, but the way he looked out there on the racetrack was incredible.”Sovereignty will get the chance to race as a 4-year-old, as he was to join Mott’s barn at Payson Park right around the start of 2026. His connections said they will evaluate him after six weeks of training before mapping out his first target of the year.SovereigntyOwn: Godolphin LLCB. c. 3 (Feb)Sire: Into Mischief (Harlan's Holiday) $250,000Dam:Crowned (Bernardini)Br: Godolphin (Ky)Tr: Mott William I (52 7 4 5 .13) 2025 :(662 106 .16)Life 9 6 2 0 $5,835,300 1152025 6 5 1 0 $5,692,020 1152024 3 1 1 0 $143,280 890 0 0 0 $0 -D.Fst 7 4 2 0 $1,535,300 115Wet(420) 2 2 0 0 $4,300,000 109Synth(328) $0Turf(301) 0 0 0 0 $0 -Dst(0) 0 0 0 0 $0 -23Ý25=13Sar fst 1² 47§ 1:11¦ 1:36 2:00© Travers-G1 115 4 /5 5§ 4§ 2ô 1¨ 1¦¥ Alvarado J 126 *.30 99=03 Sovrgnty¦¥BrcktBstr¦¥öMgntd¦§ô 2-3p,4p1/4,eased up26Û25=10Sar fst 1° ÿ 48§ 1:12§ 1:36© 1:49§ JimDandy-G2 104 5 /5 2¦ 3¦ô 3ô 1ô 1¦ Alvarado J 124 *.50 92=10 Sovereignty¦Baeza®õHillRoadó Carried 5w 1/2, 7w 1/47Þ25=13Sar gd 1² 47¨ 1:12¦ 1:36¨ 2:00¨ Belmont-G1 109 2 /8 2¦ 4¦õ 4§ 2ô 1¨ Alvarado J 126 2.50 100=04 Sovereignty¨Journlism¨ôBez¦ö 5w upper, edged clear3Ü25=12CD slyø 1² ý 46¦ 1:10¨ 1:36© 2:02¦ KyDerby-G1 104 16/19 16®õ 16¦¨ 4¦ 1Ç 1¦ô Alvarado J 126 7.98 96=10 Soverignty¦ôJournlismÉBz§ô Clip,5-6w2nd,duel,edge29à25=14GP fst 1° C 47¦ 1:11¨ 1:36§ 1:49¦ FlaDerby-G1 92 10/10 8«õ 6ª 5© 4§ö 2¦õ Franco M 122 *1.70 94=04 TppnStreet¦õSovereignty§öNeoquos¦ô 3-4wd, gaining1à25=13GP fst 1 23 :47 1:10¨ 1:43 FntnOYth-G2 95 2 /6 5ªô 6ªô 6ª 3§ 1É Alvarado J 123 3.20 94=13 SovrigntyÉRvrThms§ôNoquosÉ Rail, 4wd 7/16, surgedBarBara D. 38 The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRABy Matt HegartyA consequence of modern technology in sports photography is that many of the most dramatic and artful shots are made by strategically placed remotes that take dozens of frames per second. Think of that cliché shot of the horses rounding the first turn at the Kentucky Derby, the twin spires prominently featured in the background. Most likely, a robot got that shot. Not so with Skip Dickstein’s Eclipse Award winner this year. Dickstein was standing inside the outer rail at Saratoga, his viewfinder up to his eye, when he captured Irad Ortiz Jr. suspended in mid-air after being unseated shortly after the start of the Jockey Club Gold Cup on Aug. 31. Ortiz is desperately grabbing his mount’s mane on his way to what could have been a tragic fall. The race began with an intense bumping episode, and Dickstein kept his eye to the viewfinder and his finger on the trigger as the incident evolved. The winning image was one of a string of shots that emerged from that focus.“It was one of the best action images I’ve ever made,” Dickstein said. “I have won [the Eclipse Award] before from a remote but never a handheld image. This brings a greater sense of satisfaction, as the handheld image is far more personal.”Dickstein, who has been a professional photographer for more than four decades, won that first Eclipse in 1996 for a shot of the finish of the Breeders’ Cup Classic. This year’s winning image appeared in both the Albany Times-Union and The Blood-Horse.Fortunately for all, Ortiz escaped serious injury. He returned to riding a week later. Dickstein’s shot also persists, a vivid reminder of the constant peril faced by the sport’s riders.SKIP DICKSTEINPHOTOGRAPHYSkip DickSteinMEDIA

40 The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRABy Matt HegartyNatalie Voss, a longtime reporter and editor at The Paulick Report, knew in 2024 that she would soon be leaving her positions, though she wasn’t sure what the next stage of her career might be.“I didn’t know where I was going, whether it be something else entirely or freelancing, but I was asking myself, ‘What am I going to regret leaving on the table?’ ” Voss said. “And I knew I didn’t want to leave without doing this. It was needed.”Voss was referring to her four-part, 14,000-word deep-dive into the murky world of kill pens, the ultimate destination for an unknowable number of horses, some Thoroughbreds. The series ran late in 2024 in The Paulick Report, and it was honored with the 2025 Eclipse Award winner for Writing – News/Enterprise.It was the fourth Eclipse Award for writing for Voss, who is now the director of corporate communications for the United States Equestrian Federation.Very few reporters delve into the world of kill pens because precise information in the sphere is very difficult to nail down. Voss relied on dozens of interviews to provide a comprehensive overview of how the industry can lose track of its retired athletes and the practitioners who exploit the opaqueness of that world for profit and publicity.“That whole world is shady,” Voss said. “It’s a lot of hearsay and word of mouth. There’s almost no documentation. And that’s why it’s important to have something out there that hopefully people can find that will answer some of their questions, because there are a lot of people who think they know what is going on, but they don’t.”By Matt HegartyWhen the legendary trainer D. Wayne Lukas died in late June after a week of hospice care, one reporter seemed ideal to offer a retrospective on Lukas’s life.Unfortunately, that reporter, Jay Privman, had been retired for nearly three years.Through a mix of personal desire and cajoling from friends and editors, Privman decided he would un-retire for as long as it took him to properly describe the life and times of D. Wayne Lukas, a man he had first met as a 20-year-old cub reporter, after Codex won the 1980 Santa Anita Derby.Readers reaped the reward. In Privman’s 1,300-word retrospective, Lukas’s life story was presented as a narrative arc tracing 50 years of highs, lows, and the evolution of a man who, as the title of the piece noted, gradually transformed “from caustic to avuncular.” The piece, which ran in Daily Racing Form, Privman’s longtime employer, was named the Eclipse Award winner for Feature/Commentary.“I covered Lukas for so long, and I remember feeling at the time that a lot of people new to the game may have been unaware of how he behaved and how he presented himself when he first came on to the scene,” Privman said. “There was this story there that probably needed to be told about how he evolved, how he was once seen as so brash and controversial, and how he ended up becoming your favorite uncle, the guy you wanted to hang out with.”That sense was perfectly encapsulated in the story’s final lines.“The acceptance he desperately craved when he first came around, by the end it came in spades,” Privman wrote. “So hopefully as he slipped away, he took comfort in knowing that, in every way, he had won.”NATALIE VOSS JAY PRIVMANWRITING – NEWS/ENTERPRISE WRITING – FEATURE/COMMENTARYMEDIA

42 The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRAMEDIABy Matt HegartyOne of the few unqualified benefits of the emergence of the internet is the enabling of the podcast business model, in which a small crew of devoted individuals who might not have been able to break into radio are able to reach the far corners of the earth in search of like-minded listeners. Looking for a fivepart series on the Battle of Hastings, narrated by historians with both expertise and wit? It’s out there. So it is with the Freakonomics Radio Podcast, a New York-based program that treasures deep dives on just about any subject that piques the interest of its producers and hosts. In the fall of last year, the podcast ran a three-part series on the history of the horse in the United States entitled “The Horse Is Us,” and the second episode, running one hour and called “The Horse Industrial Complex,” is this year’s winner of the Eclipse for multimedia. The podcast relied on long interviews with representatives of various fields within the Thoroughbred world, examining the lives of jockeys, the breeding industry, auction sales, the impact of immigration policy on racetracks, and the simmering issue of artificial insemination. The series was produced by Augusta Chapman and hosted by Stephen Dubner.“I’m thrilled. This series is a passion project for me,” Chapman said. “It’s been my favorite project, and to win this award is a payoff. Our goal in each series is to introduce the audience to a topic and find out the biggest questions in the industry. It’s been all-consuming, and it’s all I could talk about for a year. For me, it feels great that I can share it with everyone.”By Matt Hegarty To most people, it doesn’t hit the ear quite right to hear “Fox Sports” and “Triple Crown” race in the same sentence. NBC has been associated with the series for decades. Prior to that, it was ABC.But that doesn’t give Fox credit for all the work it had done prior to landing an eightyear deal for the broadcast rights to the Belmont Stakes starting in 2023.Fox was no wet-behind-the-ears newcomer to racing coverage. In fact, the network began honing its expertise in 2016, when its sports affiliate first partnered with the New York Racing Association on daily coverage of racing from NYRA’s Saratoga Racecourse. Four years later, it was co-producing more than 700 hours of racing coverage a year, including live coverage of the Travers Stakes on its flagship station.Fox’s 2025 Belmont Stakes broadcast, which was named the Eclipse Award winner for Live Television, showcased all of the tricks of the trade that go into a smoothrunning racing broadcast spread over five hours. While the broadcast featured some newcomers, the production was held steady by a cast of racing insiders that viewers knew well, standing alongside the stalwarts of Fox’s major sports broadcasting teams. It also helped that the Belmont had a dynamite showdown: Rivals Sovereignty and Journalism squared off to see if either could capture two legs of the Triple Crown.“We were fortunate to have a very special Belmont Stakes winner in Sovereignty and the best setting in the world in Saratoga, and our crew led by producer Bill Richards and director Bryan Lilley delivered a broadcast worthy of the event,” said Mike Mulvihill, Fox Sports’s president of insights and analytics. “A great day at the races is a poem, a puzzle, and a party, and hopefully that’s what we delivered to millions of fans on Belmont Day.”By Matt HegartyThe timeline of a tragedy is easily told. The details of it are far more difficult. For its June 7 broadcast of the Belmont Stakes, FOX took on this extraordinary challenge, handling it as deftly as possible. It involved Bill Mott, the Hall of Fame trainer of Belmont favorite Sovereignty; his son Riley, a trainer who was brought up in his father’s stable; and Riley’s daughter, Margot, who died in 2024 at the age of 2 of a brain tumor.Tom Rinaldi, the veteran FOX reporter, narrated the feature. It was produced by Etienne Materre. Members of the Mott family agreed to sit for interviews to discuss the tragedy. The feature closed with a picture of Margot on a horse, then a photo of her standing in front of a stall.“Storytelling is the backbone of what we do at FOX Sports,” said Michael Mulvihill, a FOX Sports executive. “We are deeply grateful to the Mott family for placing their trust and confidence in Tom Rinaldi and our producer Etienne Materre to tell their story. We wish to humbly share this honor with the entire Mott family.”FREAKONOMICSRADIO PODCASTFOX SPORTS FOX SPORTSMULTIMEDIATELEVISION – LIVE TELEVISION – FEATURE

44 The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRAJOCKEY FINALISTSIRAD ORTIZ JR.By Mary RampelliniMany of the most important stakes races conducted in North America last year went through jockey Flavien Prat, who led all riders in graded wins as part of his push for a second straight Eclipse Award as outstanding jockey. He also became one of two riders to ever surpass $40 million in mount earnings in a year, alongside Irad Ortiz Jr. The new heights were reached in part by Prat winning 46 graded stakes races in 2025. He led his peers in Grade 1 wins with 13; Grade 2 wins with 15; and Grade 3 wins with 18. Overall, Prat’s mounts earned $40,496,178 to rank second to the single-season record of $40,497,847 achieved by Ortiz. Prat won a total of 310 races from 1,256 mounts last year, ranking fourth in the category, also led by Ortiz. Prat’s first Grade 1 win of the year came with Carl Spackler in the Maker’s Mark Mile in April at Keeneland and his run at the level continued all the way through Nov. 30, with Segesta in the Matriarch at Del Mar. In between, there was the Fasig-Tipton La Troienne with Raging Sea; American Turf presented by Ford with Zulu Kingdom; Shoemaker Mile with King of Gosford; Belmont Oaks Invitational with Fionn; Dunkin’ Diana with Excellent Truth; Whitney with Sierra Leone; Resorts World Casino Sword Dancer with El Cordobes; Del Mar Futurity with Brant; and the bet365 Summer with Argos. Prat also flexed his stakes prowess at the Breeders’ Cup, where he won the Dirt Mile with Nysos and PNC Bank Filly & Mare Sprint with Splendora. Prat is a 33-year-old native of France and he won his first Eclipse Award as North America’s outstanding jockey in 2024. By Mary RampelliniJockey Irad Ortiz Jr. set a single-season record for mount earnings in 2025 as part of a long list of accomplishments the rider amassed in pursuit of his sixth Eclipse Award as North America’s outstanding jockey.Ortiz also led all his peers in wins with 351 from 1,621 mounts. In addition, he ranked second in graded stakes victories with 36 – winning a minimum of one such race every month in 2025. Ortiz also won three sprint championship races during the Breeders’ Cup and took down riding titles at Saratoga, Churchill Downs, and Keeneland. The success helped lift the rider to total mount earnings of $40,497,847 last year. Ortiz had surpassed the single-season record he set in 2023 by early December, when he hit $39,200,190. From there, Ortiz kept piling on the mount earnings before closing 2025 with an unprecedented $40 million.“It means a lot. It means we had a great year,” Ortiz said.Ortiz, a 32-year-old native of Puerto Rico, won three races at the Breeders’ Cup – the $2 million Cygames Breeders’ Cup Sprint with Bentornato, the $1 million Prevagen Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint with Shisospicy, and the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint with Cy Fair. Other rich victories during the year included the $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational with White Abarrio. The races ranked among his nine Grade 1 wins in 2025.His other Grade 1s included the Stephen Foster and Churchill Downs Stakes presented by Ford with Mindframe, the Gamely with Be Your Best; the Cotillion with Clicquot; and the Coolmore Turf Mile with Rhetorical. Ortiz previously won the Eclipse Award from 2018-20 and 2022-23.FLAVIEN PRATBy Mary RampelliniJohn Velazquez became the first jockey in North America to surpass $500 million in career mount earnings in June as part of a 2025 season in which he also was the regular rider aboard unbeaten FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Juvenile presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance hero Ted Noffey. The accomplishments have led to Velazquez being voted a finalist for the Eclipse Award as North America’s outstanding jockey – an honor the 53-year-old native of Puerto Rico won in both 2004 and 2005.Velazquez, who is a member of the Hall of Fame, reached the milestone earnings mark during the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival at Saratoga. As of Jan. 2, he had reached mount earnings of $513,687,058, according to Equibase.“I don’t think about numbers,” Velazquez said in a June. “I’m happy and blessed to be here and doing things I like to do and winning races, but numbers are numbers. One day when I retire, I’ll look back and say you know what, I did very good.”Velazquez’s earnings mark coincided with a memorable Belmont Stakes Festival as he won a trio of Grade 1 races: the Jaipur with Ag Bullet; the New York Stakes presented by Rivers Casino with She Feels Pretty; and Ogden Phipps Stakes presented by Ford on Dorth Vader. The races were among 10 Grade 1 wins Velazquez had last year to rank second in the category behind Flavien Prat. The victories included the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity, and Spendthrift Farm Hopeful Stakes with Ned Toffey.Velazquez ranked fifth among all North American-based riders in mount earnings in 2025, with $21,284,926. He won 117 races from 778 mounts and of his wins, 24 came in graded stakes races. They included the Grade 1 Pacific Classic with Fierceness and the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup with Antiquarian. The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA 46By Patrick MoquinPut to the test in a challenging 4-year-old campaign, Kopion still managed to flourish for trainer Richard Mandella. A fifth-place finish against male rivals in the Cygames Breeders’ Cup Sprint does not define the talented filly, who only reached that lofty spot after lighting up the track earlier in the year.Bred by Tall Oaks Farm, Kopion was sired by Omaha Beach out of the unraced Canadian-bred mare Galloping Ami. She was purchased for $270,000 at the 2022 Keeneland September yearling sale by Spendthrift Farm, which has owned her throughout her career. In 2025, she earned nearly $900,000.Early in the year, one could argue that no sprinter, male or female, could have touched Kopion, who scorched her rivals in two graded stakes at seven furlongs to begin her 4-year-old campaign. In February, she earned a 110 Beyer Speed Figure in the Grade 2 Santa Monica, winning by 4 1/2 lengths. Three months later, Mandella shipped her to Churchill Downs for the Grade 1 Derby City Distaff presented by Kendall-Jackson Winery and struck again, as Kopion won going away with a 109 Beyer. After a surprising defeat to front-runner Sweet Azteca in the Grade 2 Great Lady M. at Los Alamitos, in which Kopion was carried extremely wide, she stretched out to her only route of the year in the Grade 1 Clement L. Hirsch presented by Oak Tree Racing Association in August at Del Mar. Up against Seismic Beauty on that filly’s terms at 1 1/16 miles, Kopion earned another eye-popping 107 Beyer but had to settle for second.Originally touted as a potentially overwhelming favorite in the PNC Bank Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, Mandella decided to change plans the month before the race. With Tamara training well, the trainer opted to split his runners, reasoning that Kopion was equipped to handle the boys. The betting public agreed and made her the 4-1 second choice in the field of 14.“Her sprints are top-notch, and I would say that bad luck has cost her the last two races,” Mandella said before the Breeders’ Cup. “I’m going to cross-enter her [in the Sprint against the colts] in case I want to separate them and give that a try.”Though she finished fifth in that attempt against male rivals, the real achievement for the filly was reaching those heights in the first place. The only possible criticism of Kopion at the end of her five-race season is that wins became hard to come by, but the most basic analysis of her last three starts reveals something far more impressive. Brilliant from the very beginning against other female sprinters, Mandella never shied away from challenging her with something new. She earned those chances and, at the top of her game, no one ever questioned her qualifications.KopionOwn: Spendthrift Farm LLCCh. f. 4 (Mar) KEESEP22 $270,000Sire: Omaha Beach (War Front) $35,000Dam:Galloping Ami (Victory Gallop)Br: Tall Oaks Farm (Ky)Tr: Mandella Richard E (0 0 0 0 .00) 2025 :(165 24 .15)Life 10 5 3 0 $1,204,700 1102025 5 2 2 0 $890,100 1102024 4 2 1 0 $278,000 970 0 0 0 $0 -D.Fst 9 4 3 0 $614,600 110Wet(419) 1 1 0 0 $590,100 109Synth(348) $0Turf(308) 0 0 0 0 $0 -Dst(0) 0 0 0 0 $0 -1ä25= 6Dmr fst 6f ý 21§ :44 :56 1:08¦ 3Î BCSprint-G1 97 1 /14 8 10«õ 8ªô 8«õ 5ªô Smith M E 123 4.10 94=04 Bntornto§õImgntnóDrVnkmn§ Ins-3w,angl,mild rally2Ý25=10Dmr fst 1Â C 22© :46¨ 1:10¦ 1:42¦ 3Î çCLHrsch-G1 107 6 /6 6©ö 6©ö 4ªô 3© 2¦ô Kimura K 121 1.90 99 - SismicButy¦ôKopion¨ôRichi¨õ 4-3w,3w-ins,angled4wd5Û25= 8LRC fst 6ôf 21© :43© 1:07¨ 1:14¦ 3Î çGretLdyM-G2 98 6 /6 3 2¦ 2¦ 2§ 2¦ô Kimura K 124 *.20 98=13 SweetAztc¦ôKopion§Chismos¨ô Carried 7wd, 2nd best3Ü25=10CD slyø 7f ý 22¦ :45 1:09¦ 1:21¨ 4Î çDctyDst-G1 109 2 /10 7 6© 6© 2Ç 1¨ Kimura K 123 2.74 95=09 Kopion¨HopeRodöWysndMns¨ 5w,englfed foe,cleared1á25= 3SA fst 7f 22¨ :45 1:08¨ 1:21¦ 4Î çSntMnca-G2 110 3 /4 2 2ô 2ô 1¦ô 1©ô Fresu A 124 *1.20 98=08 Kopion©ôHope Road¦õRichi¦ô Outsd, powered awayFEMALE SPRINTERKopionBarBara D. The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA 48By Brad FreeShisospicy was red-hot in 2025. Plans call for Shisospicy to campaign as a 4-year-old in 2026.ShisospicyOwn: Morplay Racing LLC and Qatar Racing,Gr/ro. f. 3 (Mar) FTKNOV25 $5,200,000Sire: Mitole (Eskendereya) $10,000Dam:Mischief Galore (Into Mischief)Br: Bill Heiligbrodt & Corinne Heiligbrodt (Ky)Tr: D'Angelo Jose F (3 1 0 0 .33) 2025 :(764 151 .20)Life 9 6 1 1 $2,090,270 1052025 7 5 1 0 $2,044,645 1052024 2 1 0 1 $45,625 800 0 0 0 $0 -D.Fst 3 1 1 1 $72,625 85Wet(407) 0 0 0 0 $0 -Synth(299) $0Turf(287) 6 5 0 0 $2,017,645 105Dst(0) 0 0 0 0 $0 -1ä25= 5Dmr fm 5f ê C 21¨ :43© :55¦ 3Î BCTrfSpt-G1 105 9 /12 1 1¦ 1§ 1¨ 1§ô Ortiz I Jr 121 b 5.30 101 - Shisospicy§ôAgBulletôKhdm¦ Pace inside, drew away6æ25= 9KD gd 6ôf ê ý 21© :44§ 1:08§ 1:14§ çMusicCty-G2 92 10/12 1 2Ç 1Ç 1¨ 1¨ Ortiz I Jr 120 b 3.21 98=03 Shisospicy¨Cloe¦õTabitiô Inside, kicked clear20Þ25 Ascot(GB) gf 6f ê Str 1:12 Commonwealth Cup-G1 21 15¬ö Murphy O 125 b 10.00 Time For SandalsÉArizona BlazeôRayevkaô Timeform Rating: 85 Stk 977500 Ducked leftst., led group, headed1f out, weakened final1f10Ü25=10CD fm 5ôf ê 21¨ :44 :55§ 1:01§ çMamzelle-G3 90 9 /13 2 2ô 2Ç 1¦ 1©õ Ortiz J L 120 b *1.40 100 - Shisospicy©õKilwin§õMechayaô Vied 2wd,drew off 1/811ß25= 7Kee gd 5ôf ê 21§ :44© :57 1:03© çLimestoneL293k 84 6 /12 1 1ô 1ô 1§ô 1ô Ortiz I Jr 118 b *2.15 86=14 ShisospicyôDreamwyôAbientotó 2p,cleared 1/4,lasted5á25= 5GP fm 5f ê 21¦ :43§ :54© çOC 75k/N1X -N 86 3 /7 4 1ô 1¦ 1¦ô 1§ö Ortiz I Jr L120 b *.80 96=04 Shsspcy§öLAmzn¦öThnkfllyÇ Pace 2wd,drew off,drvg4â25= 7OP fst 6f 21¨ :45§ :57© 1:10§ çMckngbirdB150k 85 7 /9 1 2¦ô 1ô 1¨ô 2¦ Prat F 119 b *.40 90=12 GWsGirl¦ShisospicyªõChtter¬ Took over, clear, caughtFEMALE SPRINTERMorplay Racing LLC and Qatar Racing LLCShisospicyBarBara D.
