Eclipse Awards 2026

Eclipse Awards 2026

The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA 50By Patrick MoquinOne month before the Breeders’ Cup, trainer Bob Baffert knew that Splendora could handle the bright lights.By convincing her connections that she was ready, Baffert was offering a bold vote of confidence for a 4-year-old filly who had never won in graded stakes company. But with a Hall of Fame trainer in her corner, it was only modestly surprising when she hustled forward from fifth under jockey Flavien Prat and surged past stablemate Hope Road to win the Grade 1 PNC Bank Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint by 4 3/4 lengths.“She loves this track and she was working really well at Santa Anita,” Baffert said in the winner’s circle at Del Mar. “I knew that seven-eighths was going to be perfect for her.”In a four-race stretch leading up to her Breeders’ Cup triumph, Splendora did not try seven furlongs, running in three routes and a six-furlong allowance. She showed plenty at Del Mar, however, earning back-to-back victories at the track and a career-best 100 Beyer Speed Figure in the $100,000 Tranquility Lake on Sept. 1.Between her unbeaten record at Del Mar, now at 4 for 4, and Baffert’s hopes at the distance, the stars could not have aligned better for the trainer’s rising star sprinter in the biggest race of her career. Before she was a West Coast champion, however, Splendora was just another bright face in Baffert’s stacked barn, a promising runner in search of a breakthrough.Bred in Maryland by The Elkstone Group LLC, Splendora was sired by Audible and is out of the stakes-winning mare Miss Freeze, by Frost Giant. She was purchased for $125,000 at the 2022 FasigTipton July sale by Sweetwater Trading, agent to Talla Racing and Rockingham Ranch. The filly made one start late in her juvenile season, but her career did not begin in earnest until October 2024, when she returned to win a maiden special weight by 5 3/4 lengths under Juan Hernandez, who rode her for most of her 4-year-old campaign. Two months later, she made her stakes debut in the Grade 1 La Brea, finishing second by 2 3/4 lengths. That runner-up finish kickstarted a trend that extended well into 2025, as Splendora went on to run in three more graded stakes through May. In a pair of Grade 2 races, the Santa Maria and Santa Margarita, she ran beyond a mile and finished second again behind stablemates Richi and Seismic Beauty. When Baffert eased away from graded stakes, her improvement was jolting, a lightning strike taking its rightful place before the thunder. Her six-furlong allowance victory in July was the first hint of Baffert’s long-term intentions. After the Tranquility Lake at a mile, the trainer was all but set on trying the Breeders’ Cup. When her time came, she was ready.Owned by Talla Racing throughout her career, Splendora earned $722,400 in 2025. Previously best known for winning the 2021 Santa Anita Derby with Rock Your World, Michael Talla called her Breeders’ Cup victory his best day as an owner. Back on the work tab for Baffert ahead of 2026, there could be many more great days to come.SplendoraOwn: By Talla Racing LLCDk. b or b. f. 4 (Jan) FTKJUL22 $125,000Sire: Audible (Into Mischief) $10,000Dam:Miss Freeze (Frost Giant)Br: The Elkstone Group LLC (Md)Tr: Baffert Bob (0 0 0 0 .00) 2025 :(338 103 .30)Life 10 5 4 0 $860,800 1002025 6 3 2 0 $722,400 1002024 3 2 1 0 $125,400 920 0 0 0 $0 -D.Fst 10 5 4 0 $860,800 100Wet(377) 0 0 0 0 $0 -Synth(275) $0Turf(237) 0 0 0 0 $0 -Dst(0) 0 0 0 0 $0 -1ä25= 4Dmr fst 7f ý 22 :44¨ 1:09¦ 1:21¨ 3Î çBCFMSprt-G1 97 2 /7 5 5§õ 4§ 1¦ô 1©ö Prat F 124 b 2.90 95=04 Splendora©öVahv¦õHopeRod©õ Engulfed foes, cleared1æ25= 8Dmr fst 1 22¦ :46 1:09© 1:34§ 3Î çËTranqLakeB100k 100 1 /6 1¦ 1¦ 1¦ô 1§ 1ªô Hernandez J J 121 b *.80 103=01 SplndrªôOnMcPhll©öNthnLkY¨ô Ins,drew off,handily24Û25= 7Dmr fst 6f C 21© :45¦ :57§ 1:09¨ 3Î çOC 100k/C -N 86 2 /7 2 4¦ 4¦ô 1¦ 1¨ô Hernandez J J L120 b *.50 93=13 Splendora¨ôOotyôSafa©õ Ins-2wd,in hand late25Ü25= 3SA fst 1° S 46¦ 1:09© 1:34© 1:48¦ 3Î çSMrgrta-G2 96 3 /5 2§ô 2§ 2§ 2¨ 2ª Hernandez J J 122 b *.80 92=03 SsmcBtªSplndr§ôPrncssfT¦¤ô Closest 2wide,no match19ß25= 7SA fst 1 22¨ :46¨ 1:10¨ 1:42¨ 4Î çSntMaria-G2 96 2 /5 3¦ 3¦ 2¦ 2¨ 2©ô Hernandez J J 120 b 1.60 91=11 Rch©ôSplndor¦§UltmtAthrty«ô Bid btwn 1/2,no match1á25= 3SA fst 7f 22¨ :45 1:08¨ 1:21¦ 4Î çSntMnca-G2 96 4 /4 3 4¦ô 3¦ô 4©ô 4¬õ Dettori L 120 b 6.50 91=08 Kopion©ôHopeRod¦õRichi¦ô Stalked,asked3w,weakndFEMALE SPRINTERSplendoraBarBara D. 52 The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRAAs a part of tonight’s festivities, to salute horseplayers throughout North America, we recognize Dan Piazza, winner of the 2025 NTRA Horseplayer of the Year for capturing the 26th annual NTRA National Horseplayers Championship (NHC) at Horseshoe Las Vegas.Benefitting from steady and sure play from the start, Piazza, a financial adviser from Chicago, went virtually gate to wire and held off a late close from Tom Boyd at the Final Table to win the NHC, March 14-16, 2025, in Las Vegas. Piazza’s victory earned him $825,000, an Eclipse Award as 2025 Horseplayer of the Year, and a return trip to this year’s NHC.Piazza prevailed over three grueling days by amassing a mythical bankroll of $356.52. Boyd from New Providence, N.J., finished second with $342.22. Ray Hassan of Brooklyn Park, Minn., finished third with a bankroll of $328.36.Boyd trailed Piazza by $68.90 heading into the Final Table but closed the gap by cashing on Tampa Bay’s ninth race and gaining $36.20. He also earned $22 on Gulfstream’s eighth race to close the gap further.Santa Anita’s sixth race was the final race of the 2025 NHC. Both Piazza and Boyd wound up wagering on 7-1 Commander, who finished off the board, while 2-1 second choice Yacowlef prevailed to preserve the victory for Piazza. Piazza cashed just once during the Final Table for $2.60 on Tampa Bay’s ninth race.Piazza stuck with his strategy throughout the contest.“I didn’t try to do anything different and didn’t get out of my comfort zone,” he said. “That strategy put me up Friday and on Saturday; it was the same thing Sunday.”The 2025 NHC began with 800 entries from 623 players and was reduced to 80 entries after Saturday. Bankrolls amassed during Day 1, Day 2, and the Semifinals rolled over to the Final Table, with the 10 finalists settling the NHC score in seven “mandatory” assigned races.“Thank you to all the incredible participants at this week’s National Horseplayers Championship,” said Tom Rooney, NTRA president and chief executive officer. “Their passion, skill, and dedication to our sport is truly inspiring. This event serves as a reminder of the vital role that horseplayers play in supporting the racing industry year-round.“Their engagement and wagering not only fuels the excitement of the races but also ensures the continued growth and success of Thoroughbred racing. We congratulate all of the participants, especially our 2025 NHC champion, Dan Piazza.”The 27th annual NTRA National Horseplayers Championship will be held March 13-15 at Horseshoe Las Vegas.D an P iazza2025 NTRA HORSEPLAYER OF THE YEARNTRADan Piazza (left), with NTRA president Tom Rooney, is presented with a “big check” for $825,000 after winning the National Horseplayers Championship.

The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA 54By Mary RampelliniBentornato needed just 1:08.20 to establish himself as a finalist for an Eclipse Award for outstanding male sprinter of 2025. That was the time it took for him to win the $2 million Cygames Breeders’ Cup Sprint over six furlongs Nov. 1 at Del Mar. Bentornato sparred with defending champ and 2024 Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner Straight No Chaser through fractions of 21.48 seconds for the opening quarter and 44.14 for the half-mile before going on to a 2 1/4-length victory.“I rode him with so much confidence,” jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. said. “I just wanted a clean break, we got it, and after that I just let him be him. He has so much natural speed. I knew I was going to have some horse left at the end, and he did the rest.”The win trumped Bentornato’s runner-up finish in the 2024 Breeders’ Cup Sprint, where he was beaten a half-length.“We worked so hard to come back here with him, had to stop on him twice during the year, and he responded so well,” winning trainer Jose D’Angelo said. “He’s a big horse with a big heart and he showed that off today.“Last year when we ran against Straight No Chaser, our horse was a 3-year-old. Now he’s an older, bigger, stronger horse.” Bentornato made one other start in 2025. As his prep for the Breeders’ Cup, he rolled to a 5 1/4-length win in the Louisville Thoroughbred Society Stakes on Sept. 13 at Churchill Downs. He earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 108, then put up a career-best number of 110 in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint.Bentornato is a ridgling by the Candy Ride stallion Valiant Minister. His dam, Her Special Way, is a daughter of Put It Back. Bentornato was bred in Florida by Tanma Corp. He was a $170,000 purchase at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales auction of 2-year-olds in training in March 2023.Bentornato – which means “welcome back” in Italian – has gone on to win a total of six stakes in his career. Overall, he is 7 for 11 for earnings of $2,322,180. Bentornato races for Leon King Stable Corp., Julia C. Iavarone, and Michael Iavarone. The Iavarones bought a 25 percent interest in Bentornato for $1 million during the Keeneland Championship auction on Oct. 29, 2025. “I had reached out about a month ago expressing my interest in buying the horse, but at the time he wasn’t for sale,” Michael Iavarone said after the Breeders’ Cup. “Then, when I learned from [D’Angelo] there would be a fractional ownership available, we jumped in. I mean how many times do you get an opportunity to buy into a Breeders’ Cup favorite just three days before the race?”Bentornato was a favorite who became a winner and now, he could become a champion. The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA 56By Mary RampelliniBook’em Danno is an Eclipse Award finalist for outstanding male sprinter of 2025 for a season in which he swept three graded stakes races at Saratoga Race Course. For one of those wins, the Grade 2 Alfred G. Vanderbilt on July 19, he earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 111. The number ranked as the highest Beyer put up by a male sprinter in 2025 and was tied for second-highest of the year behind the 115 that Sovereignty earned winning the Travers. Book’em Danno and trainer Derek Ryan crafted a 4-for-5 campaign last year. The horse opened his season with a win in the $150,000 Boston Handicap on March 14 at Colonial Downs, then ran fourth by a neck in the Grade 1 Churchill Downs presented by Ford on May 3.Book’em Danno made his way to Saratoga from there, and launched his memorable meet with a 1 1/4-length win in the Grade 3 True North on June 7. He covered 6 1/2 furlongs in the slop in a blazing 1:14.64 and for the effort earned a Beyer of 106. Up next was the Vanderbilt. Book’em Danno tracked the pace en route to a 2 1/2-length victory, covering six furlongs on a fast track in 1:08.98. “I feel the Vanderbilt was definitely his best race so far,” Ryan said. “He just keeps getting bigger and stronger as the year has gone on.” There would be more Saratoga success to come. Book’em Danno wrapped up his season with a Grade 1 win in the Forego Stakes on Aug. 23. “I’ll never make those three races again, let alone win them,” Ryan said of the outstanding feat by Book’em Danno. Book’em Danno is a gelding by the Kantharos stallion Bucchero. He is the second stakes winner produced from his dam, Adorabella, who is a daughter of Ghostzapper. Book’em Danno was bred in New Jersey by Gregory J. Kilka and Bright View Farm. Book’em Danno, who was purchased by owner Atlantic Six Racing via private transaction, is an eight-time stakes winner. Overall, he has compiled a career record of 10 wins from 16 starts for earnings of $1,885,425. Book’em Danno has won races at Aqueduct, Colonial, Monmouth Park, Saratoga, and Tampa Bay Downs.“He’ll run anywhere and he’ll run over anything,” Ryan said. “They say good horses, they’ll run on a tin roof. And he’s just a really good racehorse.”Ryan also credited the efforts of regular rider Paco Lopez.Following the Saratoga meet, Ryan ruled out a start in the Cygames Breeders’ Cup Sprint, but said it might be a race to target in 2026. As of November, plans were to begin preparing the horse for a 5-year-old campaign at Tampa. Ryan said it could include the Group 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen on March 28 at Meydan.“I think I can make the Dubai race, if not I’ll wait until Keeneland,” Ryan said, referencing the Commonwealth Stakes at the spring meeting. By then, Book’em Danno might be answering to a new title – champion. The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA 58By Patrick MoquinFour-year-old Nysos notched four graded stakes victories in five 2025 starts, defending the West Coast with relentless precision and quietly putting together one of the best campaigns of his class over the course of eight months.Bred in Kentucky by Susie Atkins, Nysos was sired by Nyquist and is out of the unraced mare Zetta Z. He went to auction three times between 2021 and 2023 and was ultimately purchased for $550,000 by Baoma Corp. at the 2023 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. spring sale of 2-year-olds in training.Owned by Baoma Corp for most of his career, Coolmore affiliates Susan Magnier, Derrick Smith, and Michael Tabor bought an interest in the colt as a lessee ahead of Nysos’s most recent start, which came in the Grade 2 Laffit Pincay Jr. Stakes on Dec. 28 at Santa Anita. He earned just more than $1 million during his 2025 campaign. After the colt was forced to miss the majority of his 3-year-old season, trainer Bob Baffert decided to give Nysos an immense test in his return on May 3, entering him in the Grade 1 Churchill Downs Stakes presented by Ford off a 15-month layoff. In a blanket finish featuring four graded stakes winners, Nysos dead-heated for second in the seven-furlong sprint behind Mindframe. He has not lost since.Back in California for the rest of his season, Nysos ran again 28 days later and took down a four-horse field in the Grade 3 Triple Bend, his first victory since February 2024. In the 5 1/2-length romp at seven furlongs, he earned a career-best 108 Beyer Speed Figure. In July, he earned heavy favoritism in the Grade 2, 1 1/16-mile San Diego Handicap and kicked clear to win again by 2 3/4 lengths. The San Diego was his last race before the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Del Mar in November, a profound opportunity for the sharp miler in his home state. It’s safe to say that his trainer was confident.“He’s the closest I’ve had to American Pharoah,” Baffert said before the race.Sure enough, at 3-5 odds, Nysos and jockey Flavien Prat flew home from fifth to snatch the Breeders’ Cup victory from stubborn stablemate Citizen Bull, prevailing by a head and earning a 105 Beyer. For a horse whose career had once been put on hold, it was a breakthrough. In an encore on Dec. 28, Baffert entered Nysos in the 1 1/16-mile Pincay. Just as he did in the Breeders’ Cup, the colt went off at prohibitively short odds and prevailed by a head over a stablemate, outlasting Nevada Beach on his home track.Because he did not participate in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic and stayed in California for most of his campaign, Nysos often gets lost in an elite crop. While rivals on the East Coast have spent the better part of two years knocking heads, Nysos has been largely removed, dominating at home at shorter distances. If Baffert proceeds with his plans to prepare him for the $20 million Saudi Cup in February, however, that conversation could change in a hurry.NysosOwn: Baoma Corp. The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA 60By Steve AndersenCool Jet did not just beat his rivals in three graded stakes in Virgina and South Carolina in the spring and fall of 2025. He trounced them. Those victories have made Cool Jet a finalist for the Eclipse Award as the nation’s champion steeplechase horse of 2025.Owned by Riverdee Stable and trained by Jack Fisher, Cool Jet won 3 of 6 starts and earned $190,500 in 2025, by far the most successful season of a career that began in Ireland in 2020.Cool Jet had a limited career in Ireland and Britain from 2020 to early 2022, winning once in seven starts. He was sent to the United States in the middle of 2022 and was a stakes winner over hurdles within a year.Cool Jet was winless in two graded stakes in his only starts of 2024, but his 2025 campaign was remarkably different.A 9-year-old gelding in 2025, Cool Jet was beaten in his first two starts, including a second in the restricted Good Night Shirt Stakes, a hurdle race at 2 1/8 miles at Foxfield Racecourse in Charlottesville, Va., in late April.Cool Jet did not lose again for more than six months. He won his Grade 1 debut by a commanding 7 1/2 lengths in the $150,000 Commonwealth Cup at 2 1/8 miles at Great Meadows in The Plains, Va., on May 3, part of the Virginia Gold Cup program. Cool Jet led throughout under regular rider Bernie Dalton.Cool Jet did not race in the summer and returned to the track in the Grade 3 Mariann de Tejeda Memorial Stakes at 2 1/8 miles at Foxfield in Charlottesville, Va., on Oct. 5. Cool Jet stalked the pace before taking the lead on the final circuit. He won by 4 3/4 lengths beating a field that included Snap Decision, the champion steeplechaser of 2024.Cool Jet was held out of the American Grand National at Far Hills, N.J., later in October and started in the Grade 3 Noel Laing Stakes at 2 1/2 miles at Montpelier, Va., on Nov. 1. Allowed to set the pace, Cool Jet proved impossible to catch, beating six rivals by 4 3/4 lengths.Cool Jet started one more time in 2025 but did not get far. In the Grade 1 Colonial Cup at 2 5/8 miles in Camden, S.C., the last major jump race of the year, Cool Jet fell at the first hurdle. He was quickly on his feet. A three-race winning streak had ended in dramatic fashion in the $150,000 weight-for-age race. For the year, Cool Jet, bred in Ireland by Mrs. Deidre McGrath, won 3 of 6 starts and earned $190,500, the most productive year of his career.Cool Jet (Ire)Own: Riverdee StableB. g. 9 (May)Sire: Jet Away*GB (Cape Cross*Ire)Dam:Cool Trix* (Presenting*GB)Br: Mrs Deirdre McGrath (Ire)Tr: Fisher Jack (0 0 0 0 .00) 2025 :(127 33 .26)Life 21 7 3 1 $345,234 -2025 6 3 1 1 $190,500 -2024 2 0 0 0 $5,250 -0 0 0 0 $0 -D.Fst 0 0 0 0 $0 -Wet(395) 4 1 0 0 $8,084 -Synth(316) $0Turf(299) 1 0 0 0 $0 -Dst(0) 0 0 0 0 $0 -23ä25= 4Cam gd 2¸ ê Hurdles 5:02§ 4Î ClnialCp-G1 - 9 /9 - - - - - Dalton B L156 - - - Fil Dor¦õVae Patron¦ôZarak the Brave§ Fell1ä25= 7Mtp gd 2¶ ê Hurdles 5:13§ 4Î NoelLang-G3 - 1 /7 1¦ô 1© 1§ô 1¨ 1©ö Dalton B L158 - - - CoolJet©öNobleAnthemöForTheParishö Never headed5å25= 6Fx gd 2° ê Hurdles 4:03 4Î MDTjdaMm-G3 - 3 /7 2¦ô 2¦ 1§ 1© 1©ö Dalton B L152 - - - Cool Jet©öFoxy WalkÉWho's Counting©õ StalkedHand timed3Ü25= 4GrM fm 2° ê Hurdles 4:02¦ 4Î CmnwthCp-G1 - 6 /7 1¦ 1¦ 1¦ô 1§ 1¬õ Dalton B L150 5.80 - - CoolJt¬õNoblAnthm¦TooFrindly©ô Drew away handilyHand timed26ß25= 4Fx fm 2° ê Hurdles 3:57¨ 4Î ËGdNghtShrt50k - 2 /6 2§ 2ô 2¦ 2ô 2ö O'Sullivan J L158 - - - Foxy WalköCool Jet«öProven Innocent¦ Stretch lossHand timed12ß25= 6BLU gd 2 ê Hurdles 3:56¦ 4Î Hcp 15000C - 2 /4 4¬ 3« 3¦® 3¦© 3§©ô McDonagh D¬ L151 - - - Foxy Walk§ôDecisive Triumph§§Cool Jet§ OutrunHand timedSTEEPLECHASECool Jet (IRE)Tod Marks PhoTograPhy

The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA 62By Steve AndersenIn slightly more than three months in 2025, Swore went from a maiden race winner to a multiple stakes winner over hurdles. With that meteoric rise, Swore is a finalist for the Eclipse Award as champion steeplechase horse of 2025.Swore ended his 2024 season with a sixth-place finish in an allowance race at Aqueduct for owner and breeder Stone Farm and trainer Graham Motion. The entirety of his 2025 season was over obstacles under the direction of trainer Keri Brion.Swore, a 6-year-old in 2025, underwent a breathing operation after joining Brion’s stable in late 2024. Swore was second in his debut over hurdles in a maiden race at 2 1/4 miles on July 17 at Colonial Downs. He closed from seventh of nine to finish 6 3/4 lengths behind Cyber Ninja.Swore was sharper in his second start, closing from third of eight to win a maiden race at 2 1/4 miles by 2 1/4 lengths on Aug. 21. Swore ran in stakes for the rest of the year and displayed a more prominent style of racing. The Grade 1 Lonesome Glory Handicap is the top jump race in New York after Labor Day. Despite his lack of experience, Swore was the 4-1 second choice in a field of eight in the $150,000 race at 2 1/2 miles on Sept. 18 at Aqueduct. His chances were helped by a low weight assignment of 144 pounds, compared to top weight of 158 pounds for 8-5 favorite Zarak the Brave.Piloted by regular rider Stephen Mulqueen, Swore was at the front throughout. He was challenged by Zarak the Brave midway through the race, was passed by Welshman in the final quartermile, and fought back to win by a neck.“It’s all about momentum with him,” Mulqueen said after the Lonesome Glory. “He jumped brilliant in front, so I wasn’t bothered being there.”Swore was not as well regarded in the Grade 1 American Grand National at Far Hills, N.J., on Oct. 18, going off at 18-1 in a field of eight in the $250,000 race at 2 5/8 miles. Swore set the pace to the final circuit before he faded from contention. He was pulled up two obstacles from the finish when beaten.Swore had one more start in 2025, in the restricted Supreme Hurdle Stakes at 2 3/8 miles at Pine Mountain, Ga., on Nov. 15. Again, Swore proved to be uncatchable on the lead. He was in front by three lengths in the stretch and won by 5 3/4 lengths for his third win in his final four starts of the year.Swore earned $181,800 for Stone Farm and partner Uplands Flat Racing in 2025, more than half of his career earnings of $341,792.SworeOwn: Stone Farm and Upland Flats RacingDk. b or b. g. 6 (Mar)Sire: Broken Vow (Unbridled) $20,000Dam:Cara Bella (Ghostzapper)Br: Stone Farm LLC (Ky)Tr: Brion Keri (13 2 2 2 .15) 2025 :(372 45 .12)Life 17 4 3 2 $341,792 862025 5 3 1 0 $181,800 -2024 5 0 0 1 $21,292 860 0 0 0 $0 -D.Fst 1 0 0 0 $2,300 54Wet(417) 0 0 0 0 $0 -Synth(388) $0Turf(321) 10 1 2 2 $156,972 86Dst(0) 0 0 0 0 $0 -15ä25= 4Pmt gd 2´ ê Hurdles 4:12 4Î ËAFLACSprm75k - 2 /7 1¦ 1Ç 1§ 1¨ 1ªö Mulqueen S 153 - - - SworªöTwoPstEghtÉKngofthKds¦ Drew clear stretch18å25= 5FH gd 2¸ ê Hurdles 5:20 4Î GrandNat-G1 - 1 /8 1Ç 3É - - - Mulqueen S 156 18.80 - - ZanahiyrÇBllysxHnk«ôHowybudó Set pace, pulled up18æ25= 1BAQ fm 2¶ ê Hurdles 4:38¦ 4Î LnsmGryH-G1 - 2 /8 1§ 1Ç 1ô 2¦ 1É Mulqueen S 144 4.23 - - SworeÉWelshmn¦ôSweetWill¦õ Jumped well, gamely21Ý25= 1Cnl fm 2² ê Hurdles 4:10§ 4Î Md Sp Wt 61k - 7 /8 3¨ô 3¨ 3¦ô 1Ç 1§õ Mulqueen S L154 *.80 - - Swore§õGrtiPrinceôPrdomintÉ Ins,wait, bid ins,clear17Û25= 3Cnl fm 2² ê Hurdles 4:04© 4Î Md Sp Wt 63k - 6 /9 5¨ô 7©ô 6ªö 3ª 2«ö Mulqueen S L154 2.90 - - CyberNinj«öSworeªõCdognPlcÉ Split upper,2nd bestSTEEPLECHASESworeChelsea DuranD/nYra

The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA 64By Steve AndersenLong before he stormed through the uphill stretch to record a narrow win in the Grade 1 American Grand National Hurdle Stakes on Oct. 18 at Far Hills Racecourse in New Jersey, the Irishbred gelding Zanahiyr was better known for losses in major races in Britain and Ireland. But in his first trip to the United States, a somewhat erratic but determined Zanahiyr won the $250,000 Grand National for his richest victory. The win left Zanahiyr, an 8-year-old gelding owned by Noel and Valerie Moran’s Bective Stud, as a finalist for the Eclipse Award as North America’s champion steeplechase horse of 2025.To get there, there were more setbacks in high-profile races.Zanahiyr was fourth as the 6-5 favorite in the Grade 1 Triumph Hurdle for 4-year-olds at Cheltenham Racecourse in March 2021, Britain’s leading race for the age group. In 2022 and 2023, Zanahiyr was back at Cheltenham for the Grade 1 Champion Hurdle at 2 1/16 miles. He was third in the 2022 Champion Hurdle, later disqualified for a medication violation, and third again in 2023.Switched to tougher steeplechase fences in late 2023 by trainer Gordon Elliott, Zanahiyr was third by a length in the 22-runner Galway Plate, Ireland’s top summertime race for jumpers, in July 2024.In the 2025 Galway Plate on July 30, Zanahiyr finished seventh of 22. Zanahiyr did not lose for the rest of the year.A drop in class to a minor chase at 2 3/4 miles a mere four days after the Galway Plate led to a four-length win against three rivals. On Aug. 26, Zanahiyr won a minor handicap at 2 1/8 miles on the flat at Bellewstown Racecourse in Ireland for his first win in a race without obstacles since a maiden race at 1 1/2 miles at Fairyhouse in July 2020. The win at Fairyhouse was Zanahiyr final start for his breeder, the Aga Khan. After the win at Bellewstown, a first-ever trip to the United States became a focus. Zanahiyr, the 2-1 second choice, was last early and was not a fluent jumper at times in the Grand National. Jockey Jack Kennedy persisted and coaxed a winning performance by a head from Zanahiyr after dueling with fellow Irish shipper Ballysax Hank through the stretch. “I was never really happy on him,” Kennedy said in a television interview. “He’s an honest horse and tried his heart out. He galloped his heart out.“The hurdles are different than what we have in Ireland. I don’t think he enjoyed it too much. He was very slow at his hurdles. It took a while to get him into his jumping.“I was hoping I hadn’t used up too much to finish out the race.”Zanahiyr was one of five winners for Elliott on the program.Zanahiyr, by the Galileo stallion Nathaniel, had started in more lucrative races before the American Grand National, among them the Galway Plates and Champion Hurdles. For one day, however, far from home, he was the star.Zanahiyr (Ire)Own: Bective StudCh. g. 8 (Apr)Sire: Nathaniel*Ire (Galileo*Ire) $22,300Dam:Zariyna*Ire (Marju*Ire)Br: His Highness The Aga Khan's Studs S.C. The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Famesalutes Ed Bowen for his remarkable achievementsin thoroughbred racing and his dedication andleadership to the sport and Museum.(518) 584-0400191 Union AvenueSaratoga Springs, NY 12866 racingmuseum.orgJohn Engelhardt Photo

66 The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRABy Matt Hegarty If Thoroughbred racing had a title for Official Historian, it would have been held for decades by the late Ed Bowen. It does not. In its stead, Bowen will this year be bestowed with the Eclipse Award of Merit, one of the sport’s highest honors.Bowen, who died in January 2025, was the pre-eminent chronicler of American racing for nearly his entire career. A prolific author and judicious editor, Bowen gave depth and breadth to the horses, races, and personalities who achieved greatness or infamy on the dirt or turf. For nearly four decades he chaired the Hall of Fame Nominating Committee, steering the panel that decided which of the sport’s greats deserved immortality. He wrote 22 books, with equine subjects ranging from Bold Ruler to War Admiral. His biographical anthologies cataloged the sport’s most influential people, from August Belmont to the Whitneys.“He was a human racing encyclopedia and his love for the sport was unsurpassed,” said Brien Bouyea, the communications director at the Hall of Fame, at the time of Bowen’s death. “He leaves behind an immeasurable legacy, a true giant of American racing.”Bowen started young in the racing industry, walking hots and grooming as a teenager in Florida during the summer. He picked the University of Kentucky for his college, out of a desire to be near the epicenter of the U.S. racing and breeding industry. After writing, publishing, and editing jobs at a variety of publications, but most notably The Blood-Horse, Bowen became one of those industry titans whose influence could be felt everywhere throughout the sport. From 1994 to 2018, Bowen was the president of the GraysonJockey Club Research Foundation, guiding the foundation’s fundraising efforts and its contributions to scientific studies benefiting horse health. He was the chair of the Historic Review Committee for the Hall of Fame, and he also served on the Pillars of the Turf Committee and Steeplechase Review Committee. And he was the chair of its Joe Hirsch Media Roll of Honor, which tabbed him for inclusion in December.Bowen received the Eclipse Award for magazine writing in 1972 and was the recipient of the National Turf Writers Association’s Walter Haight Award, the Charles Engelhard Award from the Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders, and the Old Hilltop Award from Pimlico. He was made a Kentucky Colonel in 2022.Along the way, he served as a mentor for countless reporters and writers who would unabashedly look to him for guidance. He never turned them down.Jacqueline Duke was the longtime president of Eclipse Press, which published nearly all of Bowen’s books.“Ed was a terrific raconteur and a gentleman from the old school,” Duke said in an obituary that appeared in the BloodHorse. “Even before our book ventures, I knew Ed as a kind mentor to an upstart journalist. He explained people, politics, and the idiosyncrasies of the horse business.“His contributions to the Thoroughbred library are incalculable.”AWARD OF MERITEd BowenBarBara D. Livingston

We salute Edward Bowen, who for more than half a century described the most memorable moments of the sport as captured each year during the Eclipse Awards. We were honored to have him as an ambassador for the sport.Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation

68 The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRABREEDER FINALISTSBy Nicole RussoDon Alberto Corp., which already had a good deal of success at its base in Chile, purchased its U.S. farm in 2013. In less than a dozen years, the international outfit, headed by principals Liliana Solari and her son Carlos Heller, has done what a number of solely U.S.-based operations have sought to do for generations. The farm bred its first American classic winner in 2023 and in 2025 struck with its second, Eclipse Award finalist Journalism.Don Alberto bred and sold Arcangelo as a yearling. Arcangelo won the 2023 Belmont and Travers stakes to earn an Eclipse Award as the outstanding 3-yearold male that season. In August 2023, Don Alberto offered, via the Denali Stud consignment, a Curlin colt out of the Grade 2-winning Uncle Mo mare Mopotism at the FasigTipton Saratoga selected yearling sale. The colt brought $825,000 from Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners. Journalism now races for Eclipse, with Don Alberto coming back in for a piece, in partnership with Bridlewood Farm, Robert LaPenta, Elayne Stables Five, and the Coolmore group. Journalism won four graded stakes in 2025, highlighted by his classic victory in the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes, in which he overcame a rough stretch run. He had additional Grade 1 wins in the Santa Anita Derby and NYRA Bets Haskell Stakes and was second in both the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve and Belmont Stakes presented by NYRA Bets. Don Alberto bred another 2025 Grade 1 winner with Clicquot, who took down the Cotillion Stakes at Parx.Don Alberto put its roots in Kentucky by purchasing Dr. Tom Simon’s Vinery in October 2013. Later, the farm expanded to the adjacent Hill ‘n’ Dale property, when John Sikura moved his operations to Xalapa Farm.DON ALBERTO CORP.By Nicole Russo WinStar Farm, one of the most prolific breeding and stallion operations in Kentucky, was led on the track in 2025 by a multi-generation homebred who showed off the strength of the program’s bloodlines and stallion roster. The outfit, which owns three prior Eclipse Awards – as outstanding owner in 2010 and outstanding breeder in 2016 and 2020 – is again a finalist for outstanding breeder for these accomplishments.WinStar finished second to Godolphin by both breeder earnings and graded stakes wins in 2025, and the leading WinStar-bred runner among those was Patch Adams. The Into Mischief colt is out of WinStar homebred stakes winner Well Humored, by the farm’s foundation stallion Distorted Humor; Well Humored, in turn, is out of homebred Life Well Lived, by WinStar stallion Tiznow. This family has produced the likes of Well Armed, who carried WinStar’s colors to victory in the Dubai World Cup, and Patch Adams ably added to the bloodlines. Campaigned in partnership with frequent partner China Horse Club, Patch Adams won a pair of Grade 1 sprints at Saratoga in 2025, the Woody Stephens Stakes presented by Mohegan Sun and H. Allen Jerkens Memorial. Patch Adams now joins the WinStar stallion roster for 2026.WinStar was founded in 2000 by Kenny Troutt and Bill Casner on the former Prestonwood Farm, a 400-acre property. The two dissolved their partnership in 2010, leaving Troutt as owner of the operation, which has former trainer Elliott Walden as its current president, CEO, and racing manager. Walden is planning to step down from his positions toward the end of 2026.WinStar has expanded to cover thousands of acres, along most of Pisgah Pike in Versailles, Ky. The farm includes a training center, as well as its breeding and stallion operations. WINSTAR FARM GODOLPHINBy Nicole Russo Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum’s international Godolphin operation is yet again a finalist for both the Eclipse Award for outstanding owner and outstanding breeder, looking to sweep for the fifth consecutive year after breakthrough accomplishments.Godolphin earned its long-sought win in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve when homebred Sovereignty swept to victory in the classic – 24 hours after another homebred, Good Cheer, captured the Grade 1 Longines Kentucky Oaks. Godolphin became the first sole owner-breeder to sweep both races since legendary Calumet Farm in 1952. Adding to an unprecedented first weekend in May, Godolphin added the English 2000 Guineas and 1000 Guineas, with Ruling Court and Desert Flower, respectively.Sovereignty continued on to win the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes presented by NYRA Bets, Grade 2 Jim Dandy, and Grade 1 DraftKings Travers Stakes and is the favorite to be named Horse of the Year.Godolphin’s other Grade 1 performers this year, in North America alone, included Notable Speech’s victories in the Rogers Woodbine Mile and FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile presented by the PDJF; the globe-trotting Rebel’s Romance returning to the United States to win the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic before finishing second in his attempt at a third Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf victory; and El Cordobes winning the Resorts World Casino Sword Dancer before finishing third in both the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic and Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf. Overall, Godolphin led both the owner and breeder lists by earnings, graded stakes wins, and Grade 1 wins. It dominated the breeder list by graded wins, in particular, with 25 to nine for WinStar Farm.Godolphin or its Darley banner – the brand that it stands its stallions under – has won or tied for the outstanding owner award in 2006, 2009, 2012, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024. The duo won the Eclipse Award as outstanding owner that season. However, Lawrence was in the process of exiting the business. Klarman kept on – and has kept appearing among the Eclipse finalists in this category. In 2025, his stable finished second among owners by earnings to the massive Godolphin operation, which had far more starts. Klaravich also tied for fourth in the nation by graded stakes wins for owners. One of the leading runners for Klaravich in 2025 was Dynamic Pricing, who gave the stable a Grade 1 victory at Saratoga in the Just a Game Stakes presented by Resolute Racing, as well as wins in the Grade 3 Beaugay and the listed Perfect Sting. She also was third in the Grade 1 Dunkin’ Diana Stakes at Saratoga. Randomized, a millionaire who won Grade 1 races for the stable in 2023 and 2024, had another solid season, winning the Grade 3 Molly Pitcher and placing in multiple graded stakes, including a third in the Grade 1 Fasig-Tipton La Troienne. The standout filly sprinter Ways and Means had a brief but accomplished campaign, finishing third in the Grade 1 Derby City Distaff presented by Kendall-Jackson Winery before winning the Grade 2 Bed o’ Roses Stakes. Klaravich also campaigned Fully Subscribed, winner of the Grade 2 Mother Goose and Grade 3 Comely; and Redistricting, winner of the Grade 2 United Nations.KLARAVICH STABLESBy Nicole RussoIf a massive Thoroughbred conglomerate can also be a tight-knit family operation, Spendthrift Farm is such an operation, and it rode its connections to success as both an owner and breeder in 2025.Remarkably, this would be the first Eclipse Award for Spendthrift, which was founded in 1937 by Leslie Combs II. The farm was revitalized into its current era by the late B. Wayne Hughes, starting in 2004. Hughes died in 2021, and the farm is now owned and overseen by his son-in-law Eric Gustavson and daughter Tammy Hughes Gustavson. The farm’s exploits in 2025 were led by a pair of juveniles named for family and friends. Ted Noffey, whose name is a play on longtime farm manager Ned Toffey, completed an unbeaten campaign and likely locked up an Eclipse Award title by winning the FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Juvenile presented by the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, his third Grade 1 win of 2025. Tommy Jo, named for the Gustavsons’ granddaughter, also was a multiple Grade 1-winning juvenile this season. Both of those juveniles are by Spendthrift kingpin Into Mischief, who earned his seventh consecutive North American general sire title in 2025. Spendthrift’s massive stallion roster also includes Yaupon, who gave the farm its fourth straight freshman sire title this season; leading second-crop sire Vekoma; and the top four third-crop sires in Omaha Beach, Mitole, Maximus Mischief, and Vino Rosso.Tommy Jo races as a homebred for Spendthrift, while Ted Noffey was a $650,000 yearling purchase at the 2024 Keeneland September sale. Also purchased to race by the farm was Kopion, another Grade 1 winner in 2025. Spendthrift trailed only Godolphin by graded stakes wins for owners, 22 to 10, and by Grade 1 wins for owners, eight to six.SPENDTHRIFT FARM

The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA. 72TRAINER FINALISTSBy Marcus HershIt was, in fact, a down year for Chad Brown.Nearly every horse trainer on the planet would kill to have a Chad Brown down year.Brown won 28 graded stakes, far fewer than the 47 he notched in 2024 and his career-best 54 in 2019. His 203 wins during 2025 ranked eighth among Brown seasons, and $24.5 million in purse earnings were roughly $6.5 million less than his 2024 total. And still: Brown’s 10 Grade 1 wins tied for first with Bob Baffert and Todd Pletcher. His 203 winners were the eighth-most among North American trainers, and all but one of the stables who bested him sent out at least 200 more starters. Brown was third in purses behind earnings leader Brad Cox, who had 180 more starters, and Steve Asmussen, who had almost 1,400 more.Brown’s first Grade 1 of the year came in the Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational presented by Qatar Racing with Spirit of St Louis, who for several seasons had plied his trade in New York-bred competition. Spirit of St Louis led the turf division until June after landing a second Grade 1 in the Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic at Churchill, which came about a month after Brown won the Grade 1 Maker’s Mark Mile at Keeneland with Carl Spackler, who then left the barn to campaign internationally for a new owner and trainer.Excellent Truth upset Eclipse Award finalist She Feels Pretty in the Grade 1 Dunkin’ Diana Stakes, and Brown ended the season with his annual plunder of California Grade 1 turf contests, winning the Hollywood Derby with Salamis and the Matriarch with Segesta.A down year – and an excellent year.By Marcus HershBrad Cox during 2025 won more purse money than any North American trainer and more races and graded stakes than all but two.Yet Cox could look back over the season and wonder what might have been.Tappan Street beat Horse of the Year favorite Sovereignty in the Grade 1 Curlin Florida Derby presented by Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms at Xalapa, but when Sovereignty was out winning the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve, Tappan Street had started his recovery from a surgically repaired injury sustained shortly before the big event.Muhimma won all three of her races at 2 and came into 2025 as the Longines Kentucky Oaks favorite. She hasn’t started since the Grade 1 Central Bank Ashland in April. Cox still won his third Kentucky Oaks, with Good Cheer, but she never recaptured that form the rest of the season. Patch Adams won a pair of 3-year-old Grade 1 sprints but headed off to the breeding shed before facing older rivals. First Mission and even Just a Touch dropped hints of Grade 1 glory but never tasted it.Yet even in listing all those horses one feels the depth and breadth of the vast Cox operation. Derby horses, Oaks horses, sprinters, older route runners – and beyond. The 3-year-old turf filly Fionn had a six-win campaign that included four graded stakes. She won the Grade 3 Dueling Grounds Oaks at Kentucky Downs four days after another 3-year-old grass filly, Stellify, captured the Grade 3 Ladies Marathon there, both races carrying seven-figure purses.Cox, quietly, notched a career-best 277 wins. The troops keep marching, regiments of reserves preparing for their move to the front lines. This winter alone Cox runs divisions in Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, and New York. It’s an annual event, Cox’s position as a finalist for champion trainer. He’s not going anywhere.BRADCOXBy Marcus HershA gentleman named Jay Bernardini ranked 26th among North American trainers with 108 wins during 2025. Sitting 27th, with 106 winners, came Bill Mott. Maybe you’ve heard of him. Mott won 13 graded races during the year. The top three in the land took down 35, 28, and 26.The statistical case simply doesn’t exist for Mott to be an Eclipse Award finalist. It hasn’t for decades and never will again. But we all know that the numbers only carry so much weight. This is no lifetime achievement award, but Mott is widely regarded as the greatest horseman of his generation. You can’t just pretend not to know that.Mott also trains a horse called Sovereignty, strong favorite to be named Horse of the Year, possibly one of the best racehorses we have seen in . . . a long time.Bill Mott, 72, has trained horses for . . . a long time. Since age 15. He has trained all sorts of them, down-on-their-luck Nebraska claimers, steeds like the legendary Cigar.Months before Sovereignty won the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve, the Belmont Stakes presented by NYRA Bets, and the DraftKings Travers Stakes, probably even before his first race, something about a colt far from precocious lodged in Mott’s brain. It’s probably not outlandish suggesting that in some way, Mott pointed Sovereignty toward the Derby – a race Mott had only won once, via disqualification – before the colt had won any kind of race.Sovereignty, remember, lost his Derby prep, beaten in the Grade 1 Curlin Florida Derby presented by Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms at Xalapa. Mott’s plan wasn’t to lose, but that race was only part of the plan. Same goes for the controversial decision Mott and owner Godolphin made to skip the Preakness.Mott also sent Scylla out to an upset win in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Sovereignty returns to race in 2026. So does Bill Mott. We’re lucky to have both of them.BILLMOTTCHAD BROWN

The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA 74By Brad FreeScylla was always in the thick of it against high-class competition in 2025, and though she won just one race, her timing was as impeccable as her pedigree.Sired by Tapit and produced by multiple Grade 1 winner Close Hatches, Scylla upset the biggest dirt race of the year for fillies and mares. The Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff was the final start of her career and makes her an Eclipse Award finalist as outstanding older dirt female.Bred and owned by Juddmonte Farms, Scylla was trained throughout her career by Bill Mott. Expectations were always high, because Scylla’s bloodlines are exquisite. Juddmonte breeds quality stock, and it does not get much better than Tapit over a Grade 1 winner. In 2024, Scylla flirted with top company through a 4-year-old campaign that included a pair of runner-up finishes in Grade 1 races and a close fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint to end her season. She was still missing the ever-elusive Grade 1.In 2025 at age 5, Scylla returned to seek her first Grade 1. But she was not quick enough to win a high-level sprint, and high-level routes were slightly out of reach. Scylla was a horse without a distance. She made her 2025 debut at Churchill Downs in May, racing seven furlongs in the Grade 1 Derby City Distaff presented by KendallJackson Winery. The track was sloppy, the field was loaded, and Scylla broke from the rail. It was a lot to ask following a six-month break.Despite trouble, Scylla ran well to finish fourth, and Mott kept her in sprints her next three starts at Saratoga. Scylla finished in the money, but short of the mark. She ran second in the Grade 2 Bed o’ Roses, third in the Grade 2 Honorable Miss, and second in the Grade 1 Ballerina. With her career winding down, Mott and Juddmonte decided to give Scylla another shot around two turns. They shipped her to Keeneland for Grade 1 Juddmonte Spinster, a 1 1/8-mile race that would determine if Scylla deserved a shot in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff.Junior Alvarado rode Scylla for the first time in the Spinster, and she finished a creditable third. No excuse, just third best. It was a good enough effort to warrant a start in the Distaff.Mott previously won the Distaff five times; four of his winners entered off losses in their prep race. Scylla was following the same pattern. Her third in the Spinster set her up perfectly for the Distaff in early November.Scylla broke like a shot and made the lead over a speed-favoring Del Mar surface. The fractions were fast, but Scylla was running comfortably under Alvarado. At the top of the stretch, the race was over.Scylla opened up into the lane and ran away to win by 5 1/2 lengths. She finally had her Grade 1, a fitting end to an outstanding career. Scylla retires from racing having won six races and $2,287,795 from 16 starts. Scylla will become a Juddmonte broodmare this spring.ScyllaOwn: JuddmonteB. m. 5 (Mar)Sire: Tapit (Pulpit) $185,000Dam:Close Hatches (First Defence)Br: Juddmonte Farms Inc (Ky)Tr: Mott William I (52 7 4 5 .13) 2025 :(662 106 .16)Life 16 6 5 3 $2,287,795 1032025 6 1 2 2 $1,336,750 1032024 8 3 3 1 $821,510 960 0 0 0 $0 -D.Fst 13 5 5 2 $2,139,125 103Wet(416) 3 1 0 1 $148,670 96Synth(362) $0Turf(308) 0 0 0 0 $0 -Dst(0) 0 0 0 0 $0 -1ä25= 7Dmr fst 1° 45¨ 1:10 1:35¦ 1:48 3Î çBCDistaf-G1 103 4 /12 1ô 1ô 1ô 1¨ 1ªô Alvarado J 124 b 7.60 104 - ScyllaªôNitrogenôRegaled¦ö Repelled foes, cleared5å25= 9Kee fst 1° 46¨ 1:10§ 1:35© 1:49¨ 3Î çSpinster-G1 93 2 /5 4¦ô 4§ 4§ 3§ 3¦õ Alvarado J 125 b 6.66 96=03 Gin GinÇNitrogen¦õScylla¬õ Bobbled st,ins,willing23Ý25=11Sar fst 7f 22¦ :44§ 1:08§ 1:21© 3Î çBalrina-G1 95 5 /7 1 1¦ 1ô 2¦ 2§ Prat F 122 b 3.90 93=07 HopeRod§Scyll©MjsticOops¬õ 2p,headed1/4,outfinshd20Û25= 9Sar slyø 6f C 21¨ :44§ :56© 1:09© 4Î çHnrblMs-G2 88 3 /8 7 8ªõ 6ª 5¨ 3§ Rosario J 124 b *1.25 92=09 HalinasForteôRDisaster¦ôScyll¦ô 2p trn,3p1/4,willingly6Þ25= 6Sar fst 7f 22§ :45 1:08¨ 1:21 4Î çBedORos-G2 97 2 /7 6 6¨õ 3¦ô 2¨ 2¬ö Rosario J 124 b 4.50 91=09 WysndMns¬öScyll«õJdsPrdó Bmp brk,2p-ins,bmpd1/43Ü25=10CD slyø 7f ý 22¦ :45 1:09¦ 1:21¨ 4Î çDctyDst-G1 96 1 /10 9 8« 7ª 5ªõ 4«ö Rosario J 123 b 6.92 88=09 Kopion¨HopeRodöWysndMens¨ Steadied 11/16, 5 wideOLDER DIRT FEMALEScyllaBarBara D. The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA 76By Patrick MoquinOne month before the Breeders’ Cup, trainer Bob Baffert knew that Splendora could handle the bright lights.By convincing her connections that she was ready, Baffert was offering a bold vote of confidence for a 4-year-old filly who had never won in graded stakes company. Back on the work tab for Baffert ahead of 2026, there could be many more great days to come.SplendoraOwn: By Talla Racing LLCDk. b or b. f. 4 (Jan) FTKJUL22 $125,000Sire: Audible (Into Mischief) $10,000Dam:Miss Freeze (Frost Giant)Br: The Elkstone Group LLC (Md)Tr: Baffert Bob (0 0 0 0 .00) 2025 :(338 103 .30)Life 10 5 4 0 $860,800 1002025 6 3 2 0 $722,400 1002024 3 2 1 0 $125,400 920 0 0 0 $0 -D.Fst 10 5 4 0 $860,800 100Wet(377) 0 0 0 0 $0 -Synth(275) $0Turf(237) 0 0 0 0 $0 -Dst(0) 0 0 0 0 $0 -1ä25= 4Dmr fst 7f ý 22 :44¨ 1:09¦ 1:21¨ 3Î çBCFMSprt-G1 97 2 /7 5 5§õ 4§ 1¦ô 1©ö Prat F 124 b 2.90 95=04 Splendora©öVahv¦õHopeRod©õ Engulfed foes, cleared1æ25= 8Dmr fst 1 22¦ :46 1:09© 1:34§ 3Î çËTranqLakeB100k 100 1 /6 1¦ 1¦ 1¦ô 1§ 1ªô Hernandez J J 121 b *.80 103=01 SplndrªôOnMcPhll©öNthnLkY¨ô Ins,drew off,handily24Û25= 7Dmr fst 6f C 21© :45¦ :57§ 1:09¨ 3Î çOC 100k/C -N 86 2 /7 2 4¦ 4¦ô 1¦ 1¨ô Hernandez J J L120 b *.50 93=13 Splendora¨ôOotyôSafa©õ Ins-2wd,in hand late25Ü25= 3SA fst 1° S 46¦ 1:09© 1:34© 1:48¦ 3Î çSMrgrta-G2 96 3 /5 2§ô 2§ 2§ 2¨ 2ª Hernandez J J 122 b *.80 92=03 SsmcBtªSplndr§ôPrncssfT¦¤ô Closest 2wide,no match19ß25= 7SA fst 1 22¨ :46¨ 1:10¨ 1:42¨ 4Î çSntMaria-G2 96 2 /5 3¦ 3¦ 2¦ 2¨ 2©ô Hernandez J J 120 b 1.60 91=11 Rch©ôSplndor¦§UltmtAthrty«ô Bid btwn 1/2,no match1á25= 3SA fst 7f 22¨ :45 1:08¨ 1:21¦ 4Î çSntMnca-G2 96 4 /4 3 4¦ô 3¦ô 4©ô 4¬õ Dettori L 120 b 6.50 91=08 Kopion©ôHopeRod¦õRichi¦ô Stalked,asked3w,weakndOLDER DIRT FEMALESplendoraBarBara D. The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA 78By Brad FreeIt’s not easy to win an Eclipse Award. It’s even tougher to repeat.Thorpedo Anna entered 2025 with lofty expectations, having won eight stakes in 2024 and earning Eclipse Awards as outstanding 3-year-old filly and Horse of the Year. Even though her 4-year-old campaign did not quite stack up to the year before, it was a success.Thorpedo Anna won four graded stakes, including two Grade 1s and a pair of Grade 2s, from six starts in 2025, a campaign that makes her a deserving Eclipse Award finalist as outstanding older dirt female. It’s a nice way to go out. Thorpedo Anna is retired from racing.Kenny McPeek trained Thorpedo Anna, who was sired by Fast Anna. She was bred in Kentucky by Judy Hicks, who retained a share in the filly after auctioning her at Fasig-Tipton for $40,000 as a yearling in October 2022. For most of her career, Thorpedo Anna was owned by a partnership that included Hicks, Brookdale Racing, Mark Edwards, and Magdalena Racing. After winning the 2024 Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Del Mar, Thorpedo Anna took a four-month winter vacation, during which time she underwent oral surgery to remove a piece of dead bone from her jaw. The procedure was minor, and McPeek geared her up for 2025.Thorpedo Anna would have a target on her back all season. She started as the odds-on favorite in all six starts, beginning with her comeback in the Grade 2 Azeri Stakes in March at Oaklawn Park.Racing on a wet track, Thorpedo Anna wired the field by more than three lengths. Five weeks later, in the Grade 1 Apple Blossom at the same track, she produced the same result. Racing on a fast surface under regular rider Brian Hernandez Jr., Thorpedo Anna pressed the pace and won by more than four lengths. She looked unstoppable. But there are no guarantees in racing, and Thorpedo Anna subsequently tossed in a clunker in the Grade 1 Fasig-Tipton La Troienne Stakes in May at Churchill Downs. She encountered trouble on the first turn, pressed the pace, and finished last of seven. The trouble and an abbreviated three-week break between starts provided alibis.Questions remained, however. Was Thorpedo Anna the same filly she was the year before? Redemption occurred in June at Churchill Downs. Despite her last-start misfire, Thorpedo Anna was heavily favored in the Grade 2 Fleur de Lis at Churchill Downs. She did not disappoint.Facing a small field, Thorpedo Anna won by three lengths. Soon after, Brookdale Racing sold its ownership share to Hill ’n’ Dale Racing. Former star NFL running back Marshawn Lynch took a minority share, and Thorpedo Anna shipped to Saratoga for the Grade 1 Personal Ensign.Thorpedo Anna won the Personal Ensign by a nose, then subsequently finished off the board in the Grade 1 Juddmonte Spinster Stakes at Keeneland. Her fourth-place finish under Flavien Prat, who was subbing for an injured Hernandez, turned out to be the final start of her career.Thorpedo Anna retired with 12 wins and $5,440,913 from 16 starts. Plans call for Thorpedo Anna to be bred this spring to Gun Runner.Thorpedo AnnaOwn: Hill 'n' Dale Equine Holdings Inc. 80 The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRABy Matt Hegarty“And away they go.”There is no racetracker of a certain age who has not mimicked that line, bumbling or nailing the South African accent of the man who used it for decades to announce that a race had started, the legendary Trevor Denman, who is being honored with a Special Eclipse for Career Excellence.Denman, who officially retired last year after working sporadically for the past decade, may have started his race calls in the same way, but that was where the repetition ended. After the gates opened, Denman did not rely on recitation, cliché, or programmatic language. In his voice, a race unfurled, each a story of its own.It was a stark contrast to the race-calling styles that had dominated American racing until Denman’s arrival in the United States in 1983.“Gone was a static rundown of where runners were positioned as a race unfolded, replaced by a more descriptive commentary,” wrote Steve Andersen, a Daily Racing Formreporter based in Southern California, when Denman announced his retirement. Most closely associated with the Southern California racing circuit, Denman’s skill and style was allowed to flourish with the advent of full-card simulcasting. No longer did a player need to be ontrack to relish and rely on his wit and wisdom. By the 1990s, he was widely regarded as the most distinctive voice on the American racing landscape, known in every state that broadcast California races. From 2006 through 2012, Denman was the voice of the Breeders’ Cup for the national television audience. His most famous call – “this is un-be-lieveable!” – accompanied Zenyatta’s thrilling rally to win the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic. Denman had a 10-year career in South Africa before taking his talents to the United States. He initially worked the brief Oak Tree meeting at Santa Anita, and within a year he was working full-time at Santa Anita and Del Mar, migrating with the horses and horsemen as they made their way around the Southern California circuit. As his reputation cemented, Denman’s success led racetracks to expand their searches for racecallers. Australians particularly followed in Denman’s footsteps, while those announcers who had been brought up on the American style adapted their form to his more descriptive tone.Away from the racetrack, Denman purchased a farm in Minnesota, where he now resides year-round. He had announced his retirement from Santa Anita in 2015, limiting his calls to Del Mar until 2019. In the 2025 statement announcing his official retirement, Denman said it was “one of the hardest decisions I have ever made, but my soul is telling me that now is the right time.”And away he went.SPECIAL AWARDTrevor DenmanBarBara D. The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA 82By Patrick MoquinFor Japanese superstar Forever Young, twice bit in previous voyages to the United States, the third time paid for all. After a 2024 season that included a tenacious losing effort in the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve and a thirdbest finish in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic, it seemed as if the American contingent, particularly Sierra Leone, simply had the colt’s number. Trainer Yoshito Yahagi knew he could turn the tables.“Of course, yes, after we got third – we got beat – we think about coming back here [for] revenge,” Yahagi said.In the 2025 Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic at Del Mar, the stage could not have been set better for Forever Young’s shot at redemption. His stretch run alongside Sierra Leone and Fierceness so closely mirrored their three-horse battle in 2024, but this time, the Japanese star and jockey Ryusei Sakai prevailed. In the third Classic victory for a non-American horse, Forever Young defeated fastclosing Sierra Leone by a half-length, sweet revenge after that pair careened home together in the Kentucky Derby the year before.Bred in Japan by Northern Racing, Forever Young was sired by Japanese stakes winner Real Steel out of Forever Darling, a Kentucky-bred mare who won the Grade 2 Santa Ynez in 2016. He was purchased for $720,603 at the 2022 JRHA select yearling and foal sale by Fujita Susumu, who has owned him throughout his career. In four starts, he earned $15.1 million in 2025.To less attentive American fans, it might have seemed like Forever Young simply reappeared in this year’s Breeders’ Cup, a swift apparition haunting his stateside rivals. But it is within his jet-setting 4-year-old campaign that one can find the moments that made the icon.Already an international star, Forever Young reached new heights in his 4-year-old debut. In the $20 million Saudi Cup in February, Sakai urged him to a rousing comeback victory over Romantic Warrior, now a 16-time stakes winner based in Hong Kong who is the world’s richest horse and rated among the best.It was a king-making performance, but the validation was shortlived. In the Dubai World Cup the following month, Forever Young was left stunned when American longshots Hit Show and Mixto hit the wire together, leaving him in a frustratingly familiar third. The colt did not run again for six months, but when he kicked clear to win the Nippon TV Hai on Oct. 1 at Funabashi in Japan, it was clear that Yahagi was still preparing for redemption. The following month, he and his colt traveled to California and made history. When Forever Young dug in to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic, he and Yahagi were exorcising personal demons, proving that the colt could stand up against his American rivals. But when he shattered that ceiling, he did so for his country as well, and in years to come, his victory may be looked back on as the next step in a new and exciting era.Forever Young (Jpn)Own: Fujita SusumuB. c. 4 (Feb)Sire: Real Steel*Jpn (Deep Impact*Jpn) $21,300Dam:Forever Darling (Congrats)Br: Northern Racing (Jpn)Tr: Yahagi Yoshito (0 0 0 0 .00) 2025 :(3 1 .33)Life 13 10 0 3$19,358,590 1112025 4 3 0 1$15,110,383 1112024 6 4 0 2 $3,678,756 1090 0 0 0 $0 -D.Fst 10 7 0 3 $18,566,892 111Wet(377) 3 3 0 0 $791,698 -Synth(315) $0Turf(284) 0 0 0 0 $0 -Dst(0) 0 0 0 0 $0 -1ä25= 9Dmr fst 1² 45© 1:10§ 1:35¨ 2:00 3Î BCClasic-G1 111 5 /9 2¦ 2¦ 1ô 1¦ô 1ô Sakai R 126 3.50 96 - ForevrYoungôSirrLon¦Fircnss§õ Vie btw,ins,clear,held1å25 Funabashi(Jpn) gd Í1° LH 1:52¦ 3Î Nippon TV Hai 10 1§ô Sakai R 128 1.20 Forever Young§ôRevontuletÇHo O TruthÉ Timeform Rating: 118 Stk 4597005ß25 Meydan(UAE) ft Í1² LH 2:03§ 3Î Dubai World Cup-G1 11 3§ Sakai R 126 - Hit ShowôMixto¦ôForever Young§ô Timeform Rating: 118 Stk 12000000 Lost position, cajoled along halfway, bumped3f out, kept on 22á25 K. The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA 84By Patrick MoquinFour-year-old Nysos notched four graded stakes victories in five 2025 starts, defending the West Coast with relentless precision and quietly putting together one of the best campaigns of his class over the course of eight months.Bred in Kentucky by Susie Atkins, Nysos was sired by Nyquist out of the unraced mare Zetta Z. He went to auction three times between 2021 and 2023 and was ultimately purchased for $550,000 by Baoma Corp. at the 2023 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. spring sale of 2-year-olds in training.Owned by Baoma Corp for most of his career, Coolmore affiliates Susan Magnier, Derrick Smith, and Michael Tabor bought an interest in the colt as a lessee ahead of Nysos’s last start, which came in the Grade 2 Laffit Pincay Jr. For a horse whose career had once been put on hold, it was a profound breakthrough. The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA 86By Patrick MoquinAt the end of another stellar campaign, Sierra Leone came within a half-length of one of racing’s most mythical achievements.Since the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic was first run in 1984, 13 winners have returned to run in the race the following year. Tiznow, a solo titan, remains the only two-time Classic winner. Most returning winners have not come close, with eight finishing out of the money on their second attempt. In 2025, Sierra Leone and jockey Flavien Prat made their usual charge from the back of the pack at Del Mar. It was the same powerful move that catapulted the colt to Breeders’ Cup glory in 2024. This time, however, the late surge did not win the day, as Japanese rival Forever Young held on to win by a half-length.“I do think the track played against us, as you could see it being a bit speedy,” trainer Chad Brown said after the race. “That makes me feel even more pride, how well the horse ran. It’s remarkable that he’s the only horse that was able to make a run like that today.”Even for a horse accustomed to sweeping triumphs and tough defeats, coming up a half-length short of a second Breeders’ Cup Classic victory is uniquely disappointing. In peak form, it almost felt natural for the reigning race winner to defend his title, and he was far from disgraced in a vintage performance.Bred in Kentucky by Debby Oxley, Sierra Leone was purchased for $2.3 million by Peter Brant’s White Birch Farm and M.V. Magnier of Coolmore at the 2022 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select yearling sale.He has been owned throughout his career by the group of Brant, Westerberg, Brook Smith, and Coolmore’s Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith. In 2025, he earned nearly $2.2 million in five starts and will soon begin stud duties at Coolmore America’s Ashford Stud with an announced stud fee of $75,000.To kick off his 4-year-old season, Sierra Leone, the 2024 champion 3-year-old male, triggered some early alarm bells in March when he ran third off the bench in the Grade 2 New Orleans Classic. Matters did not improve much when he returned in June and came up a length short behind Mindframe in the Grade 1 Stephen Foster at Churchill Downs. All the pieces finally clicked into place in August, when the colt returned to Saratoga and powered home to win the Grade 1 Whitney by a length. If not for a near-disaster 29 days later in the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup, in which Prat was forced to steer Sierra Leone to avoid fallen jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., he might have made it two in a row before the Breeders’ Cup.On paper, it might seem like Sierra Leone spent most of his season as a snakebit runner-up. The truth is that he was always getting better, grinding water out of stone and finding more with each passing start. Winning at Del Mar might have lifted him to a loftier place in the record books, but it would not have proven anything that wasn’t already known. His greatness was always self-apparent.Sierra LeoneOwn: Brant Peter M., Magnier, Mrs. John, TDk. b or b. c. 4 (Mar) FTSAUG22 $2,300,000Sire: Gun Runner (Candy Ride*Arg) $250,000Dam:Heavenly Love (Malibu Moon)Br: Debby M. The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA 90By Steve AndersenGezora delivered one of the best comebacks of the autumn when she won the Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Del Mar in November.Four weeks earlier, Gezora, a 3-year-old filly in 2025, finished 13th of 17 as a longshot in the Group 1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp Racecourse in Paris, Europe’s top race for 3-year-olds and up. She was beaten 10 1/2 lengths by Daryz, failing to make an impression.Instead of ending Gezora’s season, owner Peter Brant and trainer Francis-Henri Graffard opted to send her to California for the Breeders’ Cup. Their confidence was on display when Gezora delivered arguably the best performance of an already accomplished career. With the win, Gezora earned a nomination for the Eclipse Award as outstanding turf female of 2025. The Filly & Mare Turf was her only start of 2025 in the United States.By Almanzor and bred by Haras d’Etreham, Gezora had a solid 2-year-old season in 2024, ending a four-race campaign with a win in a Group 3 at Chantilly Racecourse in October. She was purchased by Brant and turned over to Graffard last winter. After finishing third of six in a Group 3 at Longchamp in her first start of 2025 in April, Gezora won consecutive starts that vaulted her to the fore of France’s 3-year-old filly division. She won the Group 2 Prix Saint-Alary at 1 1/4 miles at Longchamp on May 11 and the Group 1 Prix de Diane, the French Oaks, at 1 5/16 miles at Chantilly on June 15. Gezora overcame traffic in the latter race to win by a length.Gezora did not start again until Sept. 7, when she finished second of six in the Group 1 Prix Vermeille at 1 1/2 miles at Longchamp on Sept. 7, losing by 1 1/2 lengths to Aventure.Aventure was the 5-1 second choice in the Arc de Triomphe, while Gezora was 31-1. Neither were a factor. Graffard was not overly concerned about the loss. In the days before the Breeders’ Cup, he said Gezora had recovered rapidly.“She didn’t have a hard race in the Arc,” he said.In the Filly & Mare Turf, Gezora closed from sixth of 13 to catch the American star She Feels Pretty in the final furlong. Gezora won by a half-length. With the win, she became the first filly to win the French Oaks and Filly & Mare Turf in the same year.“It’s fantastic to win a race like this,” Graffard said in the hour after race.“She proved she’s a real champion. She’s a classic winner, a Prix de Diane winner, and a Breeders’ Cup winner, which is amazing.”Gezora (Fr)Own: Brant Peter MB. f. 3 (Feb)Sire: Almanzor*Fr (Wootton Bassett*GB) $16,800Dam:Germance (Silver Hawk)Br: Haras d'Etreham (Fr)Tr: Graffard Francis - Henri (0 0 0 0 .00) 2025 :(5 1 .20)Life 10 5 2 1 $2,037,412 1052025 6 3 1 1 $1,957,311 1052024 4 2 1 0 $80,101 -0 0 0 0 $0 -D.Fst 0 0 0 0 $0 -Wet(320*) 0 0 0 0 $0 -Synth(316) $0Turf(367) 10 5 2 1 $2,037,412 105Dst(0) 0 0 0 0 $0 -1ä25=12Dmr fm 1´ ê 47§ 1:11 1:35¨ 2:12§ 3Î çBCFMTrf-G1 105 4 /13 6ª 6¬ô 5©ô 2¦ô 1ô Barzalona M 120 9.10 109=02 GezorôSheFelsPrttyöDimondRinô 2-3wd,rallied,up late5å25 Longchamp(Fr) sf Í1¶ ê RH 2:29 3Î Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe-G1 17 13¦¥ô Marquand T 121 31.00 DaryzÇMinnie HaukªôSosieÇ Timeform Rating: 104 Stk 5870100 Held up towards rear, no impression from 2 1/2f out 7æ25 Longchamp(Fr) gs Í1¶ ê RH 2:29¦ 3Î çPrix Vermeille-G1 6 2¦ô Barzalona M 123 4.40 Aventure¦ôGezora¦öBedtime Storyó Timeform Rating: 109 Stk 703200 Raced in fifth, second entering final furlong, kept on15Þ25 Chantilly(Fr) gs Í1³ ê RH 2:06§ çPrix de Diane-G1 12 1¦ Soumillon C 126 5.50 Gezora¦Bedtime StoryôCankoura¦õ Timeform Rating: 106 Stk 1155100 In tight2 1/2f out, rallied well final1f, led110yds out, ran o 11Ü25 Longchamp(Fr) gs Í1² ê RH 2:04 çPrix Saint Alary-G2 4 1¦õ Barzalona M 126 6.00 Gezora¦õAudubon Park¦õFlaming StoneÇ Timeform Rating: 103 Stk 146300 Asked2f out, engaged leader, led final furlong, kept on 6ß25 Longchamp(Fr) fm Í1° ê RH 1:49© çPrix Vanteaux-G3 6 3©õ Soumillon C 126 2.00 MandanabaöFlaming Stone¨ôGezora¨ Timeform Rating: 92 Stk 87700 Chased , ridden over2f out, no impression, evenlyBarBara D. The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA 92By Steve AndersenIt was no surprise to see She Feels Pretty among the nation’s leading turf females in 2025. She has been at the top of her class since her 2-year-old season in 2023.She Feels Pretty won 3 of 5 starts in 2025 and was second in her two losses, including a half-length defeat in the Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf on Nov. 1 at Del Mar.For the entirety of her campaign, She Feels Pretty is a finalist for the Eclipse Award as the nation’s champion female turf horse.Owned by Roy and Gretchen Jackson’s Lael Stables and trained by Cherie DeVaux, She Feels Pretty was a finalist for Eclipse Awards as the nation’s champion female turf horse of 2024. With those accomplishments in her recent past, there were high expectations for She Feels Pretty’s 2025 season. She delivered.Bred in Kentucky by Payson Stud Inc. and purchased in 2022 for $240,000 as a yearling at the Keeneland September sale, She Feels Pretty won her first two starts of 2025 in the Grade 3 Modesty Stakes on May 2 at Churchill Downs and the Grade 1 New York Stakes presented by Rivers Casino on June 6 at Saratoga. She Feels Pretty, who had John Velazquez as a regular rider through the year, won the New York Stakes at 1 3/16 miles on yielding turf she may not have preferred.“Having a filly like that is super special,” DeVaux said after the race. “I think of all things this is what she would least be wanting to do. I don’t think she likes the course. Johnny commented that the first time around she didn’t really tug him around there, but she’s such a professional. She just did it.”Later in the summer at Saratoga, She Feels Pretty was second by a head in the Grade 1 Dunkin’ Diana Stakes for fillies and mares at 1 1/8 miles, leading in the stretch but unable to outfinish Excellent Truth.“Even that was one of her best races,” DeVaux said later in the year.Prior to the Breeders’ Cup, She Feels Pretty rebounded to win the Grade 1 E.P. Taylor Stakes at 1 1/4 miles on turf on Aug. 16 at Woodbine, her seventh career stakes win and fifth Grade 1.She Feels Pretty was the 3-1 second choice in a field of 13 in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf at 1 3/8 miles, the longest race of her career. Starting from post 12, She Feels Pretty stalked the pace and reached the front on the turn, leading by 1 1/2 lengths in the stretch. She Feels Pretty seemed to have a sufficient advantage until Gezora closed from sixth to win.“I think she ran awesome,” DeVaux said. “She had every excuse to give up and she ran awesome.”DeVaux’s opinion reflects on all of She Feels Pretty’s 2025 season. She Feels PrettyOwn: Lael StablesCh. f. 4 (Mar) KEESEP22 $240,000Sire: Karakontie*Jpn (Bernstein) $15,000Dam:Summer Sweet (More Than Ready)Br: Payson Stud Inc (Ky)Tr: DeVaux Cherie (1 0 0 0 .00) 2025 :(370 70 .19)Life 13 8 3 2 $2,550,592 1042025 5 3 2 0 $1,422,275 1042024 5 3 1 1 $775,938 1000 0 0 0 $0 -D.Fst 0 0 0 0 $0 -Wet(366) 0 0 0 0 $0 -Synth(341) $0Turf(355) 13 8 3 2 $2,550,592 104Dst(0) 0 0 0 0 $0 -1ä25=12Dmr fm 1´ ê 47§ 1:11 1:35¨ 2:12§ 3Î çBCFMTrf-G1 104 12/13 2¦ô 3§ô 2¦ 1¦ô 2ô Velazquez J R 124 b 3.30 108=02 GezorôShFlsPrttyöDimondRinô Bid2w3rd,clear,caught16Ý25= 7WO fm 1² ê 49§ 1:14 1:37§ 2:00© 3Î çEPTaylor-G1 104 4 /7 3¨ 3§ô 1¦ 1¦ô 1Ç Velazquez J R 125 b *.45 92=08 ShFlsPrttÇDndR¦¥ôRdfrShrlö Rated/keen,5w 1/4,held12Û25=11Sar gd 1° ê ÿ 48§ 1:12¨ 1:35§ 1:47¦ 4Î çDiana-G1 102 1 /5 3¨ 3¨ô 3¨ 1Ç 2Ç Velazquez J R 124 b *.70 89=11 EclltTrthÇSFlsPrtt©ôDcPrcó 2-3p,bid1/4,dueld,miss6Þ25=12Sar yl 1± ê 51¦ 1:17§ 1:42¦ 2:00¨ 4Î çNewYork-G1 100 7 /7 3¦ô 4§ 3§ 1Ç 1ô Velazquez J R 124 b *.50 56=44 SheFeelsPrettyôBchBomb©Bllzzô Out,3-4path,lead3/162Ü25= 8CD fm 1° ê 47 1:10¨ 1:33© 1:45§ 4Î çModesty-G3 96 5 /6 4§ 3§ 3¦ô 1§ô 1§õ Velazquez J R 123 b *.79 104=02 ShFlsPrtt§õGmNthrôSffrnMn§ô 2-3w,bold bid, kick clrDebra a. romaFEMALE TURFShe Feels Pretty GRAD

The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA 94By Brad FreeShisospicy was red-hot in 2025. The front-running gray won four stakes and made history by becoming the first 3-year-old filly to win the Prevagen Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. Her gate-to-wire win produced the biggest win margin in the 18-year history of the race. The 2 1/2-length victory capped an ambitious campaign by Shisospicy, an Eclipse Award finalist as champion 3-year-old filly, female sprinter, and female turf horse.Shisospicy, trained by Jose D’Angelo and owned by Morplay Racing LLC and Qatar Racing LLC, never stayed in one place for long in 2025. Her seven starts were at seven tracks in four states and two countries. However, the season did not start well.Following a 2024 campaign in which she won 1 of 2 starts on dirt, Shisospicy returned in January 2025. She was favored to win the Mockingbird Stakes, a dirt sprint for fillies at Oaklawn Park. Shisospicy pressed the pace, opened up, and got worn down. That was it for dirt.Shisospicy subsequently switched to turf and went on a tear. She wired an allowance sprint in February at Gulfstream Park, then met stakes fillies at Keeneland. Favored in the Limestone Stakes in April, Shisospicy sped to the lead and won by a half-length. A month later, she was favored again, this time in the Grade 3 Mamzelle Stakes at Churchill Downs.Jose Ortiz subbed for regular rider Irad Ortiz Jr., and Shisospicy crushed. She pressed the pace, took command, and drew off by 4 1/4 lengths. With her first graded stakes win, the filly’s value surged.Shisospicy began her career for Morplay, which was founded by Rich Mendez with son Josh. Shisospicy, by Mitole and bred in Kentucky by Bill and Corrine Heiligbrodt, was initially purchased as a yearling for $200,000 by Mendez associates Randy Hartley and Dean DeRenzo. Morplay subsequently acquired ownership and took on a partner after the Mamzelle. Shisospicy made her final three starts in 2025 for Morplay and Qatar Racing. In June, Shisospicy shipped to Royal Ascot for the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup for 3-year-olds of either gender. It was a lot to ask. Shisospicy contested the pace and faded to 15th. Time to regroup. By September, Shisospicy had trained well for D’Angelo, and was ready to go.In the Grade 2 Music City Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Kentucky Downs, reunited with regular rider Irad Ortiz Jr., Shisospicy returned to form. She dueled early and ran away late to win by three lengths. It was time to swing for the fences.Shisospicy shipped to Del Mar for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, a race in which 3-year-old fillies had gone 0 for 8. Shisospicy ran them off their feet. She sped to the lead inside, took heat, and widened.Following the Breeders’ Cup, the Morplay-Qatar partnership was dissolved at the Fasig-Tipton November sale. Although Shisospicy did not meet her $5.2 million reserve, Morplay bought out Qatar to regain full ownership.Shisospicy won five races and $2,044,645 in 2025. She is the first Grade 1 winner sired by Mitole, the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner and Eclipse Award winner as outstanding sprinter. Plans call for Shisospicy to campaign as a 4-year-old in 2026.ShisospicyOwn: Morplay Racing LLC and Qatar Racing,Gr/ro. f. 3 (Mar) FTKNOV25 $5,200,000Sire: Mitole (Eskendereya) $10,000Dam:Mischief Galore (Into Mischief)Br: Bill Heiligbrodt & Corinne Heiligbrodt (Ky)Tr: D'Angelo Jose F (3 1 0 0 .33) 2025 :(764 151 .20)Life 9 6 1 1 $2,090,270 1052025 7 5 1 0 $2,044,645 1052024 2 1 0 1 $45,625 800 0 0 0 $0 -D.Fst 3 1 1 1 $72,625 85Wet(407) 0 0 0 0 $0 -Synth(299) $0Turf(287) 6 5 0 0 $2,017,645 105Dst(0) 0 0 0 0 $0 -1ä25= 5Dmr fm 5f ê C 21¨ :43© :55¦ 3Î BCTrfSpt-G1 105 9 /12 1 1¦ 1§ 1¨ 1§ô Ortiz I Jr 121 b 5.30 101 - Shisospicy§ôAgBulletôKhdm¦ Pace inside, drew away6æ25= 9KD gd 6ôf ê ý 21© :44§ 1:08§ 1:14§ çMusicCty-G2 92 10/12 1 2Ç 1Ç 1¨ 1¨ Ortiz I Jr 120 b 3.21 98=03 Shisospicy¨Cloe¦õTabitiô Inside, kicked clear20Þ25 Ascot(GB) gf 6f ê Str 1:12 Commonwealth Cup-G1 21 15¬ö Murphy O 125 b 10.00 Time For SandalsÉArizona BlazeôRayevkaô Timeform Rating: 85 Stk 977500 Ducked leftst., led group, headed1f out, weakened final1f10Ü25=10CD fm 5ôf ê 21¨ :44 :55§ 1:01§ çMamzelle-G3 90 9 /13 2 2ô 2Ç 1¦ 1©õ Ortiz J L 120 b *1.40 100 - Shisospicy©õKilwin§õMechayaô Vied 2wd,drew off 1/811ß25= 7Kee gd 5ôf ê 21§ :44© :57 1:03© çLimestoneL293k 84 6 /12 1 1ô 1ô 1§ô 1ô Ortiz I Jr 118 b *2.15 86=14 ShisospicyôDreamwyôAbientotó 2p,cleared 1/4,lasted5á25= 5GP fm 5f ê 21¦ :43§ :54© çOC 75k/N1X -N 86 3 /7 4 1ô 1¦ 1¦ô 1§ö Ortiz I Jr L120 b *.80 96=04 Shsspcy§öLAmzn¦öThnkfllyÇ Pace 2wd,drew off,drvg4â25= 7OP fst 6f 21¨ :45§ :57© 1:10§ çMckngbirdB150k 85 7 /9 1 2¦ô 1ô 1¨ô 2¦ Prat F 119 b *.40 90=12 GWsGirl¦ShisospicyªõChtter¬ Took over, clear, caughtBarBara D. The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA 96By Marcus HershIn April, Deterministic began his 2025 campaign for trainer Christophe Clement finishing second in a Keeneland allowance race.Clement in April had terminal cancer. Probably at that point hope still flickered in the man himself, family, close friends. Regardless, Clement, meticulously organized to the end, had laid out plans to transfer his large stable to his son Miguel sometime in June, after the Belmont Stakes Festival at Saratoga. Clement died May 25.Put yourself in Miguel Clement’s shoes. It’s the first week in June. The stable, helmed by this first-time trainer through one of the most important weeks of the Clement season, must keep churning. The work comes cloaked in grief’s heavy fog.Put yourself in Miguel Clement’s shoes as he saddles Deterministic for the Resorts World Casino Manhattan Stakes, a day later than intended, oceans of rain having delayed the important Belmont Stakes card grass races by a day. It’s Clement’s ninth stakes runner. The first eight had lost.Deterministic in his last race for Christophe Clement laid down his marker as a serious grass horse, plucking the Grade 2 Fort Marcy by more than four lengths. The Manhattan, though, long has existed at the pinnacle of North American turf racing. Christophe Clement won it three times. And after Deterministic gallantly fended off challenges from Integration and a second Clement horse, Far Bridge, his son had won it once.Deterministic started his career a dirt horse, and a pretty capable one, too, briefly popping onto the Kentucky Derby trail when he won the Gotham Stakes, but by summer of 2024 it had become clear his future lay on turf. He ended his campaign winning two graded grass stakes from three starts, deploying a stalking style, but after a winter break, Deterministic – as a good horse for a great trainer ought to do – came back faster, more professional, and more focused. Even in the Keeneland allowance race, Deterministic showed better speed than he had as a 3-year-old, and he led throughout the 1 1/8-mile Manhattan. Sent off at odds a little less than 6-1 and holding on for dear life to win by a nose, Deterministic would require a second, similar performance to validate that Grade 1 breakthrough. And on Aug. 2, in the FanDuel Fourstardave, a Grade 1 mile, he delivered one. His regular rider, Kendrick Carmouche, plunked Deterministic just off the pace before his mount accelerated to a more definitive victory than in the Manhattan.Owned by St. Elias Stable, Ken Langone, C. Steven Duncker, and Vicarage Stable and bred in Kentucky by Hinkle Farms, Deterministic was purchased for $625,000 at the 2022 Keeneland September sale.Back-to-back scores in two major New York grass races – that makes Deterministic an Eclipse Award finalist. The horse was more than that, though, a Grade 1-winning bridge between two generations of trainers, and that his campaign ended much too soon, with the Fourstardave, is unfortunate if also resonant.DeterministicOwn: St. Elias Stable Langone, Ken, DunckeDk. b or b. c. 4 (Jan) KEESEP22 $625,000Sire: Liam's Map (Unbridled's Song) $40,000Dam:Giulio's Jewel (Speightstown)Br: Hinkle Farms (Ky)Tr: Clement Miguel (19 1 4 4 .05) 2025 :(316 62 .20)Life 13 7 3 1 $1,988,515 1012025 4 3 1 0 $1,102,125 1012024 8 3 2 1 $828,640 930 0 0 0 $0 -D.Fst 3 1 0 0 $80,750 81Wet(462) 2 1 1 0 $194,625 93Synth(416) $0Turf(343) 8 5 2 1 $1,713,140 101Dst(0) 0 0 0 0 $0 -2Ý25= 8Sar fm 1 Ñ 23© :47§ 1:10¨ 1:33© 4Î 4strdav-G1 101 8 /10 2¦ 2¦ 2ô 1ô 1¦õ Carmouche K 126 4.60 98=11 Dtrmnstc¦õIntllctöWnfrthMnó 3w upper, edged away8Þ25=13Sar gd 1° Ñ ÿ 48§ 1:12© 1:36© 1:48© 4Î Manhttn-G1 100 4 /8 1Ç 1¦ 1¦ 1§ 1Ç Carmouche K 122 5.80 96=04 DtrminstcÇIntgrtonÉFrBrdg©ô In hand ins, held wellPreviously trained by Clement Christophe 2025(as of 5/3): ( 197 30 35 27 0.15 )3Ü25=10BAQ fm 1° ê ÿ 47© 1:10§ 1:33§ 1:45¨ 4Î FtMarcy-G2 98 3 /5 1¦ô 1¦ 1¦ô 1© 1©ô Carmouche K 124 *2.10 102 - Dtrmnstc©ôCrsnsRn¨õKyArmy©ô In hand ins, drew clr6ß25=10Kee slyø 1° ï 46 1:10¨ 1:37¦ 1:51¦ 4Î Alw 150000C 83 2 /6 1ô 1¦ 1¦ô 1ô 2¦ö Rosario J L123 *2.50 87=14 MnySpply¦öDtrmnstc§ôLgyns© Ins,dug in2p,bestd1/16BarBara D. STUDENTSTODAY.ECLIPSE AWARDS WINNERS TOMORROW.Congratulations to all of this year’s nominees.Bridging Education with Opportunityrtip.arizona.edu

The Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, presented by John Deere, The Jockey Club and the NTRA 98By Marcus HershNotable Speech did not win the Lockinge Stakes in May, nor did he win the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot in June, and he definitely did not win the July Cup, checking in fifth. His very presence in the July Cup, a race over a six-furlong trip a full quarter-mile shorter than Notable Speech had ever run, told the tale: The colt’s connections, owner-breeder Godolphin and trainer Charlie Appleby, were looking for answers. Not that Notable Speech was stinking up the joint. He just had failed to finish off the Lockinge and the Queen Anne with sufficient verve. The turnback to a sprint didn’t help either, but in a fourth loss to start his campaign, Appleby and jockey William Buick found their answer. In the Prix Jacques Le Marois, Buick let Notable Speech drop toward the tail of an 11-runner field, allowing his mount to relax before beginning to slalom his way into contention. Passing rivals with increasing force, Notable Speech fell a neck short of victory while looking very much like the best horse in the race. Another defeat, but the colt now was on his way.Or was he? Notable Speech shipped from England to Canada for the Woodbine Mile in September and won by a comfortable margin at odds of 2-5. Yet his performance lacked the sparkle one expected following his Marois effort and on the basis of his career arc. Thus, Notable Speech traveled to Del Mar far less than a sure thing to win the FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile presented by PDJF.Of course, Appleby and Godolphin would have loved to run the table in 2025, sweeping all the major European miles before the Breeders’ Cup. But in the end, the Breeders’ Cup Mile had been Notable Speech’s major goal all season. A year earlier, Notable Speech, the tepid favorite, finished third in the Breeders’ Cup Mile, beaten less than a length, a 3-year-old still on his way to racehorse maturity, not quite ready to close the deal. Now he was prepared to deal with 2024’s unfinished business.Buick said after the dust had settled that the Breeders’ Cup Mile panned out just as he and Appleby envisioned, Notable Speech sitting mid-pack while saving ground, slipping through along the rail and bursting home to win easily, by 1 1/2 lengths. The 4-year-old version of Notable Speech clocked 22.38 seconds for his final quarter-mile in the Breeders’ Cup Mile, more than a half-second faster than he had come home in 2024. The in-season tactical change and the trainer’s patience had paid off, the sting from that string of European defeats to start the year barely a memory in the glow of Del Mar glory.Notable Speech (GB)Own: Godolphin LLCCh. c. 4 (Mar)Sire: Dubawi*Ire (Dubai Millennium*GB) $445,600Dam:Swift Rose*Ire (Invincible Spirit*Ire)Br: Godolphin (GB)Tr: Appleby Charles (0 0 0 0 .00) 2025 :(17 4 .24)Life 14 7 1 1 $3,190,342 1032025 6 2 1 0 $1,851,001 1032024 8 5 0 1 $1,339,341 1030 0 0 0 $0 -D.Fst 0 0 0 0 $0 -Wet(395*) 0 0 0 0 $0 -Synth(324*) $0Turf(428) 11 4 1 1 $3,126,964 103Dst(0) 0 0 0 0 $0 -1ä25=10Dmr fm 1 ê 22§ :46¨ 1:10© 1:33¨ 3Î BCMile-G1 103 2 /13 6¨õ 7¨õ 6§ô 4¦ô 1¦ô Buick W T 126 *2.60 95=02 NtblSpch¦ôFrdblMnÇThLIWtrô Slipped thru, surging13æ25= 9WO fm 1 Ñ 23¦ :47¦ 1:10© 1:35¦ 3ÎWoMile-G1 101 2 /9 5ª 6¨ö 5¨ô 3§ô 1¦ö Buick W T 124 *.40 99=08 NtblSpch¦öMBPrnc¦öGsMUp¦ Tight brk, drove by 5w17Ý25 Deauville(Fr) gs Í1 ê Str 1:34¦ 3Î Prix Jacques Le Marois-G1 11 2Ç Buick W 132 5.90 Diego VelazquezÇNotable SpeechöDancing GeminiÉ Timeform Rating: 120 Stk 1170500 Moving well in traffic 2f out, rally when clear1f out, just fail 12Û25 Newmarket(GB) gf 6f ê Str 1:11 3Î July Cup S.-G1 14 5§õ Buick W 134 *2.10 No Half MeasuresÉBig Mojo¦öRun To Freedomó Timeform Rating: 109 Stk 886500 Prominent, bid1f out, hung left, no extra inside final furlong 17Þ25 Ascot(GB) gf 1 ê Str 1:41¦ 4Î Queen Anne S.-G1 10 4§õ Buick W 128 4.00 DocklandsóRosallion¦öCairoô Timeform Rating: 113 Stk 1077500 Bid2f out, dropped whip inside final1f, no extra final110y 17Ü25 Newbury(GB) gf 1 ê Str 1:35 4Î Lockinge S.-G1 8 4§ô Buick W 128 4.50 Lead ArtistÉDancing Gemini§õRosallionó Timeform Rating: 113 Stk 531200 Towards rear under hold, rally 2f out, no extra final110ydsBarBara D.
