MiniGame Spotlight

The team played about four MiniGames per year. Each quarter, they roll out a new MiniGame
aimed at different areas, like boosting morale, increasing efficiency, or improving their critical
number. Hannan would also like to find new ways for the team to think outside the box and
come up with new MiniGame concepts as well.

“Following the GGOB methodology had
significant impacts on my personal life.
The financial literacy training and score
board interaction helped me manage my
own personal finances better. I think twice
before making an investment and made
considerable changes in my overall spending
habits. I was able to pay off my student loan
earlier than I anticipated by managing and
prioritizing my finances better from the tips
I learned from the GGOB methodology.”

CHASING TACOS

Company Name: Peterson Trucks

1 Set the Objective: The targeted problem or opportunity.
The objective was to raise our Preventative Maintenance (PM) Currency to 95%. PM Currency is defined
as the number of trucksinour rental, lease, and maintenance fleet, divided by how many we’ve been able
to service within the last 90 days by our mobile maintenance technicians.

2 Set the Improvement Goal: X to Y by when.
The goal was to raise the PM Currency from 82% to 95% in 90 days.

3 Estimate the Benefit: The potential impact/return.
At the 90 day mark, PM Currency hit a high of 97%!
PM currency is the lifeblood of Peterson Idealease. When techs perform preventative maintenance
on trucks every 90 days; theyare able to inspect and correct any damages or notify of repairs in a
timely fashion. The higher the currency is, the less service calls and less breakdowns occur. This in-
turn makes the cost of running the truck and the profit return on the lease higher. It also keeps our
customers up and running, which is priority one.

4 Identify the Players: Who can impact the game?
Everyone in the Idealease service department was involved. Each region of techs have their own section
to increase to 95% individually and then can assist techs in other regions when available.

MiniGame Spotlight

“MiniGames are the breeding ground for learning and engagement, especially for our front-line
employees,” says Bagwell. The most successful games the team has played are not those that
produce prizes, but the ones that have taught their employees about the business. The team
struggled to get their technicians to understand Profit After Direct Expenses (PADE) and how
long into the month it took before they began to actually turn a profit. “It’s the most successful
MiniGame that we’ve played because we finally found a way to educate our employees in a way
that made sense to them,” says Bagwell. “It got us to the point of being able to create and play
financial games.”

MiniGames™ | 59

The GGOB is, in my opinion, the best way to
run a business. The organization is utilizing the
collective intelligence of the many people in
it. People want to be associated with a TEAM
that wins. When the inputs of those individuals
are recognized and implemented, successful
improvement occurs. The overall group is willing
to recognize areas of needed improvement,
implement appropriate changes, and work to
see the new procedures succeed. People will
support changes they are involved in setting up.”

LOVE YOUR SELFIE

Company Name: SuperSuds

1 Set the Objective: The targeted problem or opportunity.
Management decided that we needed to motivate our store staff to interact more with our customers.
Therefore, we rolled out a minigame that would be fun and would force attendants to have a more
direct interchange with everyone who came in the door. We also wanted all our staff members to join
our private company FB page and this mini game would require some interaction on the page in order
participate.

2 Set the Improvement Goal: X to Y by when.

Our goal was to improve the interaction between customer and attendant in the hopes of diversifying us,
as a company.

3 Estimate the Benefit: The potential impact/return.

Significant increases in sales were seen in stores with high participation.

So, the hopes of generating a phone list to send out mass text messages promoting our stores, we gave
each store a Facebook selfie square and had them take pictures of customers and post those pictures

10 Celebrate the Win: How and when will the win be celebrated?
Because all our huddles are held remotely all wins are celebrated during those meetings. For
stores that made their monthly numbers, they were allowed a spin and everyone in the store received
whatever prize came up on the wheel. The store with the most pics and contact info from customers
at the end of the mini game received a $100 for every employee. One store pulled in 130 contacts.

MiniGame Spotlight

An example of a successful MinGame ran at SuperSuds involved a goal to get store operators to
engage more with customers by encouraging them to take selfie photos with customers, which
would then be posted to the company’s Facebook page. Every store that hit their targets were
given the chance to spin a prize wheel. One store won the grand prize, snapping some 130 self-

MiniGame Spotlight

One prominent MiniGame the team played in 2018 was called, “The House That Venturity Built”.
The team had been watching their gross margin and capacity deteriorate for several months—
while their cost of goods sold and staff headcount continued to increase. After doing analysis
and research, the team determined that they needed to build better “houses” or teams. “We
were working, but not efficiently, and the right people were not working on the right tasks,” says
McKee. “We had to leverage work properly and create efficiencies in order to increase capacity,
improve the emotional wellness of our team members, and improve the financial wellness of
Venturity,” says McKee.

While the WEBIT team took quickly to playing MiniGames to address threats and weaknesses
in the business—one game helped them get caught up on their documentation they create for
their clients while another was targeted at identifying potential new hires—they’ve admittedly
struggled since to connect team members’ roles and departmental KPIs with their impact on net
profit. “Some of the MiniGames are overly complicated or have scoreboards designed where you
can’t tell if we’re winning or not or even what the end goal is,” says Rieger.

9 Play the Game: Plan promotions and appoint a score keeper.
The score keeper was Will Reinhart, our company’s COO. He was also the creative genius behind our
Dilly Dilly character.

10 Celebrate the Win: How and when will the win be celebrated?

Wins, which did occur weekly during this game, were celebrated with donuts provided by CM’s. The
prize for reaching 95% completion was a CM’s branded stocking cap. This win was celebrated on our
Phase I launch date so that our GGOB could participate.

LOAD TO ROAD

Company Name: Hildebrandt Tree Tech

1 Set the Objective: The targeted problem or opportunity.

Reduce time to load equipment/tools accurately and leave shop to jobsite without return trips for
forgotten tools.

2 Set the Improvement Goal: X to Y by when.

Go from leaving shop at 8:30am to 8:15am daily by 12/20/17.

3 Estimate the Benefit: The potential impact/return.

The cultural impact was that team members began think through what tools they needed for jobs more
thoroughly and were conscious of the time it took to load their trucks. If they left the shop earlier than
8:15am then they had a chance to earn bonus points. There were many m orn ings that the shop was
empty by 8:10am and even 8:05am. The guys would make better plans the day before to help expedite
leaving the shop quickly the nex t d ay. The financial impact was that we generated over $10000 more
dollars in revenue compared to the same time period the previous year!

4 Identify the Players: Who can impact the game?

Most everyone in the company had a role to play. Sales had to make sure they had accurate notes in the
jobs describing what tools/equipment would be needed. The office had to make sure all customers had
been contacted the day before and knew our crews would be there the fo llo wing day and that the jobs
were on the work scheduler correctly. Supervisors had to make sure crew assignments were accurate
and planned out in advance . The production team members had to get their tools loaded and get moving
efficiently each morning.

5 Determine the Time Frame: Long enough to accomplish the goal/change behavior.

Since this was our first mini
game we played from 11/1/2017 12/20/2017. (We played this same mini game during the same time of
year in 2018 with very similar results.

6 Create a Theme: Be creative!

medal grand slam.

9 Play the Game: Plan promotions and appoint a score keeper.
The scorekeeper was Anthony McKnight our shop technician. We had a big digital clock we bought
and hung in the shop so everyone knew the “official” time.

10 Celebrate the Win: How and when will the win be celebrated?
We celebrated the win each time we had earned enough points to reach a level. We usually
celebrated the win with snacks and/or beverages at the shop!

MiniGame Spotlight

The most popular MiniGame the Hildebrandt team has played to date was the first one it played.
It was called “Load to Road,” and its goal was to get trucks loaded and ready to leave the shop
by 8:15 a.m. or earlier each day. Now, thanks to the MiniGame, the team shows up at 8 a.m.
and is ready to roll to their job sites on time. “It has been very enjoyable to hear the front line
production guys talk about ways to improve efficiency in many of the small day to day tasks.

GET RICH OR DIE TRYIN’

Company Name: KAAPKE

1 Set the Objective: The targeted problem or opportunity.

When it became clear during a monthly Huddle that the forecast for the gross profit would drop
drastically, the team spontaneously decided to develop a MiniGame called “Get Rich Or Die Tryin”. This
MiniGame was enormously important to us in 2018, as gross profit has the greatest impact on our critical
number, financial reach.

2 Set the Improvement Goal: X to Y by when.

Generation and execution of new orders worth 400,000 euros within 3 months.

3 Estimate the Benefit: The potential impact/return.

In the past, the generation of new orders would have been a matter for the boss: the unit heads and the
managing directors would have switched to the sales mode because of the decline of orders. Now the
entire team went to work. Two “levers” were found: already approved projects from customers were
activated and started earlier - and the presentation of initiative ideas to the customer. In particular, the
latter released a flood of good ideas. These in turn inspired the customers - and ensured that the order
books were quickly full again.

4 Identify the Players: Who can impact the game?

An interdisciplinary team of designers and project managers spontaneously sat down after the great
Huddle and conceived, designed and introduced the game
in record time of three days.

5 Determine the Time Frame: Long enough to accomplish the goal/change behavior.

The duration of this MiniGame was three months.

6 Create a Theme: Be creative!
Improving order reach, increasing order lead times by optimizing work organization, thereby increasing
gross profit and financial reach, our critical number.

MiniGame Spotlight

In 2018, the KAAPKE team played several MiniGames: one was called “Get Rich or Die Tryin,” the
goal of which was to increase gross profit; and the other was called “Stundenhotel,” which was
designed to get associates to more accurately record their billable time to clients. Both MiniGa-
mes had a significant impact on the company’s financial success.

“I think that SBM has a very positive influence on
KAAPKE. It creates a completely new management
culture that I don’t know from other companies.
You move away from an authoritarian Taylor-style
understanding of leadership to a cooperative
leadership style that allows employees to
participate. In my opinion, the most valuable
thing about scoreboard management is the
transparency it creates, which enables us to
identify bottlenecks. Those bottlenecks can be
tackled independently and as a team, enabling
us to lead the company in the right direction.”

“I’ve never worked at a company before that’s truly
been transparent about the financials. They’ve
always been ‘someone else’s job,’ so while I focused
on what I needed to do, it was easy to forget that
my actions had an impact on the company’s dollars
and cents. With Red Caffeine playing GGOB, every
day I’m given the opportunity to make sure what
I’m working on is lining up with our financial goals.
Having a weekly huddle to see how our revenue is
comparing to cost of goods, celebrating financial
victories, and explaining why we’re doing a certain
activity because of its bottom line impact makes me
feel like I truly have a stake in how our business is
being run vs. just being another cog in a machine.”
