But when the weather heats up, the lake takes on perhaps

And increasingly, the brand of recreation on display is
decidedly active in character.

Wake boarding, if you aren’t sure, involves following
behind a ski-style boat on a single, truncated surf-style
board instead of skis. The boat makes waves, and, fol-
lowing behind, the wake boarder crosses the wake, taking
advantage of the pitch and the angular velocity to launch

out of the water and get acrobatic while airborne.

“It’s a very up-and-coming thing,” said Thames, him-

sport has grown tremendously. People will come out here;

they turn on music; they all pile in the boat; they have
their boards; they all have fun.”

Pretty simple, right?

It gets complex. Like most thrill sports that have
evolved beyond modest beginnings, wake boarding has
its own techniques and terminology. And if you want to
spend a lot of money on gear, you certainly can. Wake

boarding’s most ardent enthusiasts are, well, ardent.

On the consumer end of things, sure: boats and personal
watercraft cost money, as do their operation and upkeep.
And enthusiasts who can afford it gladly pay the asking
price. According to Thames, wake boarding enjoys the
same kind of devotion — and it brings people to Smith
Lake who otherwise wouldn’t come.

“The avid wake boarders, they come out here and they
know what they’re looking for. They have their ‘spots’ on
the lake, and when they get out here, they know where
they’re headed,” he said. “And it’s gotten to be a huge
economic thing, too. The wake industry provides so much
money to this lake.”

So where are Smith Lake’s best wake boarding spots?

For the answer to that question, your best bet is to grab a
board, join the growing community of wake enthusiasts,
and uncover those kinds of secrets for yourself.

so many options for treatment. Where-

major health problem. I think that’s one of
the most important things we do here.”
