cullman’s
outdoor
oasis

By Benjamin Bullard
Call it Cullman’s version of Central Park: when you enter Sportsman Lake Park, you enter another world
— even though you haven’t left city life completely behind.
Sportsman Lake is a scenic destination surrounded by the city, while feeling a world away. Nearly 200
acres in size, the park and its massive, picturesque lake were constructed from scratch in the 1950s. Rec-
reation has been the idea from the beginning, and, under the management of the Cullman County Parks
and Recreation Department, it doesn’t disappoint.

The park offers something for people of all ages. The main attraction is, of course, the lake itself: a
large, incredibly scenic body of water teeming with wildlife. The park is an immensely popular
place for family and company outdoor gatherings, with picnic areas and a pavilion, shady walk-

Feeding the ducks — never far from wherever you are — is a time-honored childhood
memory for thousands of local young adults who grew up visiting the lake.
Off the water, kids can also enjoy a small-scale train which follows a rail line

paddle boats and a brand new, oversized kids’ splash pad and play area.
A new paved, multi-purpose trail for bikers, in-line skaters and
walkers has the grown ups covered, too. Local enthusiasts love
the bike trails in particular.
“I don’t think everybody in our own community even
realizes all the places we have where they can ride
mountain bikes with their kids,” said Cullman
resident Ben Harrison, who regularly takes his
family biking on the Sportsman Lake trails.
“There’re a million things you and your

to know that these things are right here in

Strolling guests invariably discover Veterans Memorial and are
drawn in, devoting some quiet moments to gazing at its military arti-
facts, its memorial wall of names, and reading the commentary on
thoughtfully-placed plaques that tell compelling local stories. The
park has become the Cullman area’s focal point for well-at-

Veterans Day.

Here’s a tip for newcomers and locals alike: when
you head to Sportsman Lake, try staying over-
night at one of the lake’s camping spots.
You’ll have a wealth of options for en-

strawberry fest:

A Berry Historic

Festival

By Trent Moore

Though it’s only now seeing a resurgence that could put it
on the same level as the much-larger Oktoberfest, Cullman’s
Strawberry Festival is actually the oldest fest in the area’s
history — a highlight of Cullman County’s role as a strawberry
producer for the past century.

The Cullman Strawberry Festival dates back to the 1940s and
1950s, when Cullman County was largely known for its straw-
berry production. In those days, the festival was a week-long

festivities.

But as time went on, the festival waned and was eventually cullman county museum
discontinued, despite some halting efforts to revive it in the
1990s.

But local leaders recognized the appeal of the agri-tourism
movement, and knew the Strawberry Festival represented an
authentic piece of local history that deserved preservation. So,
in the 2000s, the Strawberry Festival came back. Since then,
the festival has been hosted at the Festhalle Market Platz farm-
ers market along First Avenue downtown.

The resurgent event is gaining steam once again, and enjoyed
its largest year yet in 2016. The two-day festival brought thou-
sands of visitors to downtown Cullman’s Warehouse District,
where kids played in the daytime and grown-ups lingered to
enjoy the nighttime entertainment. In addition to keeping the
focus on agriculture, the Cullman Parks and Recreation depart-
ment has introduced a live-music element, providing a spark

berries were sold, and they estimate the crowd as high as 6,000-
8,000 people across both days in 2016. The number of vendors
also more than doubled when compared with the (already
successful) previous year.

City Parks Director Nathan Anderson noted 2016 was an amaz-
ing proof of concept for what the event can become within the
next few years.

“We took over the Strawberry Festival in late February last
year, so we planned the last Strawberry Fest in, basically, two
months,” Anderson said. “We learned a lot, made some changes,
and those made a difference. This year was a huge success and

The Cullman area’s exceptionally deep agricultural
heritage has found its modern-day home at the Peinhardt
Living History Farm. Located just inside the city limits
of Cullman, the farm — a local legacy that preserves a
trove of equipment from agriculture’s early mechanized
days — marks a step back in time for the thousands of
local guests and school children who make the fascinat-

True to its heritage, the Peinhardt farm has true farm-

earliest large-scale agricultural operations in the wave of
German immigration to Cullman.

Today, because of the drive of early farmers like the
Peinhardts, Cullman County ranks as Alabama’s top
producer in agriculture. Rich harvests of sweet potatoes,
a booming poultry and egg industry as well as beef and
other products are vital areas of farming here.

As agriculture modernized and the Peinhardt family

living history exhibits, spanning more than 40 acres
of original family land right at the western fringe of
the City of Cullman.

What does “hands on” mean at the Peinhardt farm?
Farm Day guests are treated to old-time woodwork-
ing, hewing, splitting, and crosscut log sawing (par-
ticipation encouraged!), an ark’s worth of mules,
horses, cows, sheep, yard chickens and petting zoo
animals, wagon rides, quilt making, antique tractor
shows, sorghum syrup making, smithing, and...well,
you’ll just have to come to Farm Day and see for
yourself.

Peinhardt Farm Day takes place each year in Octo-
ber — but it’s not the only way to glimpse what the
farm has on offer. Outside of Farm Day, the Pein-

and special tours.

Want to stay overnight — or longer? The park has rental cab-

importantly — central heat and air.
