WHISTLIN’ DIXIE 15
With 60,000 people arriving in Cullman for the weekend, ex-
pectations are high for each year’s lineup of musical stars. In six
years, Rock the South has climbed in popularity and introduced
Cullman to endless concert-goers from across the country.

“Rock the South is now on a new level, and we only expect it to
continue growing,” says Shane Quick, co-founder of the event.
“Some people make trips to the beach, and there are others who
go to concerts all summer. We’re a big part of that summer con-
cert trail, and it leads people to Cullman from all over.”

Plans to add new amenities each year are made well in advance,
just like booking artists for each year’s show. Announcements
typically begin as early as January, and ticket sales follow online at
rockthesouth.com.

Rock the South was initiated after a series of devastating torna-
does in 2011. With each event, Quick, a Cullman County native,
and his partners award thousands of dollars to local charities and
organizations.

“The spirit of why Rock the South started remains in place,”
Quick said. “We’re here to help our community, and we know
we’re introducing Cullman to thousands of visitors every year.”

Wallace State Community College

The Cullman area is home to a rich diversity of
people, organizations and educational programs
devoted to the fine and performing arts. From
ballet to jazz; from coordinated theatre ensembles
to solo artists working quietly in their home-based
studios, makers of culture find Cullman County —
and its remarkable venues — a welcoming place.

Nowhere is that more evident than at Wallace
State Community College, where the theatre arts
department enjoys one of the most active and ro-
bust lineups of regional talent in North Alabama.
With a performance schedule that stages two ma-
jor productions each year against an exceptionally
well-appointed backdrop, theatre arts at Wallace
State enriches the area’s arts scene while equipping
young performers to take their talent and ambition
to the next level.

Theatre at Wallace State is diverse by design. The
department’s two annual flagship shows always
feature one musical and one play. Recent perfor-
mances include Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the
Woods,” Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town,” and
Disney’s “Shrek: The Musical.”

Dancing the Night Away
BY TIFFENY OWENS

The Cullman Ballet Theatre School has been dancing the night away for
more than 40 years in Cullman. The school was established by Elaine
Brown Willingham in 1973, and due to continued growth, is now at its
third location.

Cullman Ballet Theatre School teaches three methods of ballet: Russian,
Vaganova, and American Ballet (as taught by George Balanchine).
The school specializes in instruction in ballet, but also includes jazz for
enhancement of interested students.

The Ballet Theatre School highly stresses summer studies for serious pupils.
Master classes with guest teachers of are planned throughout the year for
intermediate to advanced students.

The public has a standing invite to visit Cullman Ballet Theatre School and
observe classes at any time. It’s exciting enough to observe these talented
young dancers in class, and that excitement only grows when attending
stage performances.

performance opportunities for serious students through yearly auditions to

affordable, courses that keep both visitors and locals
coming back for more.

Begin with Cross Creek Golf Course, which mea-

Though short on length, this fantastic course offers an
abundant diversity of obstacles — rolling hills, water
hazards and bunkers — to test players of all skill levels.

Cross Creek boasts a pro shop, annex, putting green
and driving range, and is also home to the Steven De-
Boer Golf Academy. In addition, Cross Creek hosts a
number of tournaments throughout the year, including
the Buck Shear Memorial, the Parent-Child Scram-
ble, the Cullman County Championship and the Elks
Junior Golf Tourney.

Over in eastern Cullman County, Chesley Oaks
Golf Course touts a par-71 facility that measures
6,738 yards from the back tees. The links-style course

Smith Lake
View from the Water

Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce

THE SLIDE BY BENJAMIN BULLARD

When you’re out on the water at Smith
Lake, you’re not just poised for a perfect
day of fishing, wake boarding, or swimming
— you’re also in prime position to see some
of Cullman County’s most interesting and
eye-catching spots, secreted away from
the bustle of cities, shopping centers and
highways.

For every interesting vista or vignette you
glimpse in a single outing along Smith
Lake’s 642 miles of shoreline, there are
dozens and dozens more. So the next
time you’re out on the lake, bring some
binoculars, sit back, and plan to stay a
while. You’re about to see some fascinating
sights— and they’re the kind of places that
can’t be seen any other way.

THE CASTLE

cullman aerial and real estate photography

INDIAN HEAD

BIG BRIDGE

The Castle Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce

This private residence just may be the most-ogled
structure anywhere on Smith Lake. Sure, there are
plenty of nice homes dotted along the lakefront,
but this 5,500 square-foot residence strikes the
kind of pose that just begs to be noticed. Perched
high atop a massive bluff and fastened to the
landscape like a bastion, “The Castle,” as locals af-
fectionately call it, surveys much — even as waves
of sightseers survey it right back.

Indian Head

Perhaps Smith Lake’s most popular diving spot,
Indian Head is a 30-foot bluff that juts its aqui-
line profile over tantalizingly deep water. Hun-
dreds of intrepid swimmers find their way onto
the cliff ’s edge each year, daring their friends —
and themselves — to take the plunge. A dive from
Indian Head is definitely an ‘at-your-own-risk’
kind of experience, so proceed accordingly.

ROCK CREEK The Slide
MARINA
Looking down a long, twisting slide is one temptation that
Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce can’t be resisted on a hot summer’s day. The view from the
water is pretty nice, too.

Whether it’s a cannonball splash into the cool waters of
the lake or a flat-on-the-back race down the chute, the
thrill of the descent and inevitable splash keep the day
alive for one lucky Smith Lake residence. It’s enough to
make you wish you were out of the boat and on dry land
— climbing the ladder for a turn at the top.

Rock Creek Marina

No ride around Smith Lake is quite complete without a
stop at Rock Creek Marina. Owned by Sammy Boggan
and guarded by his trusty dog, Juke, this fan favorite has a
little bit of everything for the average — and not-so-av-
erage — lake-goer. Gas up, grab a snack or have a friendly
chat before you go, but don’t even think about leaving
before filling up a baby bottle to feed the fish. Sounds
funny, but it’s truly a memorable experience that’ll keep
you coming back.
