PROSPECTUS KASETSART UNIVERSITY History of the University Kasetsart University is a public university in Thailand. It was the very first university to offer post-secondary educational programs in agriculture. Kasetsart University emerged initially in 1938 at Maejo Village in Chiang Mai as a unit of division rank of the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries at the Ministry of Agriculture with the name of Kasetsart College, literally meaning College of Agricultural Science. Its primary responsibility was to offer three-year post-secondary educational programs in response to the personnel requirements of the Ministry of Agriculture. In 1939, it was transferred to the present location in the Bangkhen district of Bangkok, and the School of Forestry in Phrae Province was placed under its jurisdiction. The college offered post-secondary education programs in agriculture, cooperative science and forestry. On February 2, 1943, under the proclamation of the Kasetsart University Act B.E. 2486, the Division of Kasetsart College was detached from the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries at the Ministry of Agriculture and was transformed into a unit equivalent to a department of the ministry with the name Kasetsart University (KU). The Faculty of Agriculture, The Faculty of Forestry, The Faculty of Cooperative Science, and the Faculty of Fisheries were its primary structural units, and the university was authorized to offer post-secondary educational programs in crop production and animal husbandry, forestry, fisheries and cooperative science. Hence, February 2, 1943 has been officially designated as the foundation day of Kasetsart University. Kasetsart University has grown steadily and accomplished much through the years. It has become a highly-regarded, comprehensive university both nationally and internationally. Besides the four campuses, the university maintains 18 research stations and 4 training stations in all regions of the country. The university celebrated its ‘Diamond Jubilee’ or 75th anniversary in 2018. P7

Kasetsart Symbolic Tree Their Majesties the King and Queen planted nine yellow flamboyant (Nonsi) trees in front of the university’s main auditorium on 29 November 1963 at 15.30 pm. It marked the historic day. This kind of tree has become a symbol of Kasetsart University. Nonsi, (Peltophorum pterocarpum), is a perennial tree in the Leguminasae family. It is a long-life evergreen tree which has gray bark and the branches grow upright. The leaves are bi-pinnately compound and the flowers are in large yellow panicles. The fruits are thin, flat pods which are dark red when ripe, and then turn black. It thrives in all weather conditions. Colour of the University C=100 M=0 Y=46 K=46 Song of the University On 17 December 1966, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej performed music at Kasetsart University and composed His Royal song ‘Kasetsart’ which afterwards became a symbolic song of the university. https://www.ku.ac.th/newwww/newdesign/vdo/vdo_KU/kasetsart.mp3 Kasetsart Symbol The university symbol is a Phra Phirun (or Varuna), the God of rain, mounted on a naga, a giant serpent, encircled by lotus petals and the words “Kasetsart University B.E. 2486”. The admission of undergraduate students is considered on a case-by-case basis. Besides the general qualifications for admission, other pertinent factors that must be carefully and thoroughly considered in each case are the willingness and readiness of the corresponding faculty members, especially those handling the required major courses, to teach or offer special tutoring in English, and the potential of the applicant to perform reasonably well in classes that are taught in Thai and obtain the necessary special assistance to attain a desirable level of performance. Admission to graduate study programs requires a favorable recommendation from the relevant academic department and the approval of the Graduate School Executive Committee. The admission procedure is conducted by the relevant academic department and may include, among others, a written or oral subject-matter proficiency examination. Specific pertinent details are described in the Graduate Study Application Announcement issued by the Graduate School in each academic year. The basic admission requirement for graduate diploma and master’s degree programs is a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in the prescribed academic discipline. For doctorate programs, the basic admission requirement is a master’s degree with a thesis or equivalent in the prescribed academic discipline or a bachelor’s degree of outstanding achievement. The minimum level of academic performance required for bachelors and master’s degrees for admission into master’s and doctoral degree programs is set by the relevant academic department. Credit System Kasetsart University uses the ‘credit’ system to determine the requirements and progress of the students in each program of study. Different courses at different levels require different numbers of credits. In cases of transferring credits and subjects from European countries which use the ECTS credit system, the equivalency is as shown below: Undergraduate level 1 KU Credit = 2 ECTS Graduate level 1 KU Credit = 3 ECTS Normally, the UMAP (University Mobility in Asia and Pacific) credit transfer system could be used as a reference. Please find more information on this website: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UMAP_Credit_Transfer_Scheme There are step-by-step calculations: Conversion factor: 1) Undergraduate degree 1 year of study in Europe = 60 ECTS (standard definition) 1 year of study in BS (example) in KU = 123 credits / 4 years = 30.75 credits per year Therefore, the conversion factor is 60 ECTS to 34 credits = 1.764 ECTS-per-credit 2) Graduate degree 1 year of study in Europe = 60 ECTS (standard definition) 1 year of study in MS (example) in KU = 38 credits / 2 years = 19 credits per year Therefore, the conversion factor is 60 ECTS to 19 credits = 3.158 ECTSper-credit 3) To do things right, we should use the real number of credits required in the ‘KU degree program’ in the calculation. 4) To simplify the calculation: We could use 120 credits for undergraduate degrees so that the conversion factor is 2 ECTS-per-credit and to use 40 credits for a graduate degree, the conversion factor is 3 ECTS-per credit Grading System: There are two types of registration. When students register a course as GC (Graduate Credit) or UC (Undergraduate Credit), the grade the student gets might range from A to F. In some cases, students may register for a course as GA (Graduate Audit) or UA (Undergraduate Audit), for which the student will be graded either ‘S’ or ‘U’.
