Walnut Community School
Walnut, Iowa
1965
CO-EDITORS: Eileen Corey, Linda Peterson
Foreword
To catch an eventful year in the lives of so many people is difficult, but we
have tried to capture for you the spirit of your year at Walnut Community School,
Here is your year around school: familiar faces, beloved places, most of all the cul-
tivation of ideas and of lasting friendships. If the Warrior reminds you of this year,
if future years find you referring back to it and smiling, our task has been worth-
while.

Dedication
We, the seniors of 1965, dedicate this annual to Dr. Weber in appreciation of
his help and devotion to us during our school years. He has seen most of us through
our childhood illnesses and has given up his time and services to give physicals, at
no extra cost, to those who participate in sports every year. We wish to express our
sincere appreciation, not only for these services, but for his friendship also.

The question is often asked, "What in your opinion is the ideal education?"
An ideal education is one that develops intellectual power--an education calculated to
develop the mind,
There may be many ways, all equally good, of developing the mind. I have old-fashioned
prejudices in favor of the three R's and the liberal arts, in favor of trying to understand the
greatest works the human race has produced. I believe that these are the permanent necessi-
ties, the intellectual tools that are needed to understand the ideas and the ideals of our world•
.Th!,s does not exclude later specialization of later professional education. I insist that
without' the intellectual techniques needed to understand ideas, and without at least an ac:..
quaintance with major ideas that have animated mankind since the dawn of history, no man
may call himself educated.
Mr. McIntosh

Congratulations to the graduates of 1965. You have accomplished a milestone in your
life that thousands of young people will not accomplish this year or the next or never.
You have proved to us here at school that you have the stamina and integrity and the
will-power to succeed thus far in life. Now may you go out and prove that you can take your
place in this society. Prove that you can fill the shoes left vacant for .you. Prove that you
can succeed even against the obstacles we older people have left in your way. Prove to your-
self that you can take the responsibility, along with the best.
Your time and money spent in the past twelve or thirteen years has been spent on the
finest investment. The dividends paid from this investment far exceed those of other invest-
ments many times. And the value of your investment shall increase as the years go by.
Again, congratulations to you. Youryearsinschool have not been easy but I'm sure they
have been helpful.
Mr. Kelly

Four years ago our c lass did come
Into the halls of Walnut High.
we came to see the goals attained
By others in the years gone by.
We came to conquer studies and foes,
And to be among the best in those.
We hoped to succeed and to travel far,
For we did come to see and to conquer.

About the Play--
The plot of "The Little Foxes" revolves around the desires of Ben Hubbard and his brothers
to build a cotton mill in their smallsouthern town. The Hubbards have almost raised enough
money for this purpose. They need only the assistance of Horace Giddens to fulfill their am-
bitions. Regina, Horace's wife, feels this is an excellent opportunity for all concerned. She
is ruthless in her attempts to fulfill her ambitions. Horace rejects the offer and receives the
full wrath of Regina's hatred.
Tragedy lies in the fact that if Horace had answered Regina's demands he might have
survived the heart attack which was to take his life.

This has been one of the most wonderful years in my life. I shall always remember all
my friends and the nice people ofWalnut. I have lived my first 17 years in Barcelona, Spain:
but I feel that this year has been an extra year in my life. It has been very nice going to all
the parties, events, and meeting all the people. I'm very grateful to the American Field
Service and the interest that Walnut has shown in this organization. And I want to thank all
of the people that have made my stay in America possible.

This short message is dedicated to the children of the elementary, and jr. high school.
Kindergarten - Where we begin to break home ties, learn to work and associate with others.
This is, for some, the most difficult time; and it requires the utmost patience, and under-
standing of a kind teacher.
Primary Grades ( 1-3) - Where we learn to read, and begin to work with numbers. Learning
the basic skills we need for our long journey al ong the road of education; not always a
smooth one.
Intermediate (4-6) - Putting those basic skills to use in more extensive study, broader areas
of study; and where home- work begins to rear its nasty head.
Junior High - The 0 in-between-age0 • More intensive study, where 0 how-to-study 0 begins
to show its importance . The age where curiosity seems to know no bounds.
To these young people will fall the heritage of the American Ideals that:
Public schools are for the slow, and poor; as well as for the bright, and wealthy.
We need not feel as 0 out-siders0 wherever we make our home; because this is the u. s. A. ,
where state boundries need no passport.
Mr. Lehr
