Electric vehicles (EVs) are vehicles that use one or more electric motors for propulsion, drawing power from a battery pack that is recharged by plugging into an external power source. They produce zero tailpipe emissions, which makes them a zero-emission vehicle, and offer benefits like quiet operation, lower maintenance needs, and fast acceleration. If you have been considering purchasing an EV, then Grieco Ford in Fort Lauderdale is ready for you. The top seller is the Mustang Mach E SUV. Then there is the F150 Lightning and Ford has your back with available ready power in the F-150 Lightning truck. It gives you the power you need to be prepared. They also offer the E-Transit which is generally well-regarded for its smooth, quiet ride, instant electric torque for responsive acceleration, and practical, van-like handling. Drivers praise the comfortable driving position, good visibility with modern driver aids, and a spacious cab that is often quieter than its diesel counterpart. And for those who prefer hybrids there is the Escape which combines gas and electric forces in the hybrid powertrain with 192 total system horsepower, regenerative braking helps charge the battery without plugging in, and fuel is there when you need it.So if you want to electrify your life, there is only one place to go.We, in Fort Lauderdale, are very privileged and very fortunate to have on our side a long-standing friend and ally in Grieco Ford. W hile misconceptions abound in the LGBTQ community about our bear brethren, be it known that they are as diverse as the rainbow flag that was designed as a symbol of pride by Gilbert Baker in 1978 to represent us all. When it comes to bears, no two are exactly alike. There are muscle bears, stocky bears, blond bears, black bears, polar bears, brown bears and of course teddy bears. Even the film “The Wizard of Oz” paid homage to bears in the classic line, “Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!” But the Care Bears, also known in this article as the Bears of South Florida (BOSFL), are arguably the most altruistic. “There is a large spectrum of bears,” said BOSFL President Brock Boyd. “ Our community is wonderfully diverse. We have bears, admirers, and folks who may not identify strictly as either but love the inclusive, welcoming vibes we create. Within the bear world, there’s a whole spectrum: chubby bears, muscle bears, polar bears, cubs, otters, and wolves — each identity helps people feel seen and celebrated. Personally, I’m an admirer/wolf.” The BOSFL has more than 3,400 members and 200 dedicated volunteers participating in 60 tri-county LGBTQ fundraisers annually. The organization strives to ensure that members and their admirers are provided with a safe and welcoming space for all those seeking fellowship, membership and a community to call their own. “Relocating to South Florida four years ago was a big step for me, and honestly, I wasn’t sure I would fit in. But from the moment I connected with the Bears of South Florida, I felt an immediate and genuine sense of belonging. They welcomed and accepted me for exactly who I am,” said volunteer Matt Conti. “It’s been so much more than just a fun social group; the chance to volunteer and raise funds for local LGBTQ+ organizations has truly helped me discover my purpose here. BOSFL isn’t just busy with events; they’re genuinely making a profound difference – not just in the lives of members like me, but for the entire LGBTQ+ community. I’m incredibly grateful to be a part of it.” The group is also committed to breaking stereotypes placed on gay men to obtain and maintain unrealistic body types. “We make sure every BOSFL event is a true safe space. Everyone is welcome — no judgment, no body shaming, no cliques. We do not tolerate behavior that makes anyone feel less than worthy. More than raising funds or throwing big parties, our real mission is to make sure everyone leaves feeling what I feel every time: that they belong,” Boyd said. It is through the commitment and dedication of the organization’s members that the Bears of South Florida have collectively clocked thousands of volunteer hours each year to raise money for a variety of LGBTQ non-profits including Equality Florida, Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida (GMCSF), Island City Stage, Plays of Wilton (POW!), Pride Center at Equality Park, Safe Schools South Florida, SAGE of South Florida, South Florida Pride Bands (SFPB), SunServe and TransSocial. These organizations have been funded in part through the BOSFL’s Grizzly Giving Program. According to Boyd, the organization was able to provide $100,000 in grants to 12 local LGBTQ non-profits in 2024. “The goal for 2025 is to award $200,000,” he said. Additionally, the Bears of South Florida’s Donor Matching Program has announced that an anonymous corporate donor has provided up to $50,000 in donor matches in individual and small business donations until September 30, 2025. While the Bears of South Florida have a robust events calendar that offers a variety of monthly fundraisers including pool parties at The Grand Resort & Spa, Solstice at Wilton and the Ed Lugo Resort, along with movie nights and Bowling with the Bears, they are also planning for the future. “Looking ahead, our goals are clear: we’re focused on strong succession planning to keep our mission thriving for years to come. We want to grow our sponsorship program, expand health and wellness education, and build our membership so even more people can experience the connection, support, and joy of this community,” Boyd said. BY ROBERT COLECHANGING LIVESOne Fundraiser at a Time“We want to grow our sponsorship program, expand health and wellness education, and build our membership so even more people can experience the connection, support, and joy of this community.”- BOSFL PresidentBrock BoydYOUR CHOICE AWARDS PRESENTED BY GRIECO FORD OF FORT LAUDERDALE | OUTSFL | 17

As the organization’s president, Boyd has been hands-on when it comes to operational duties. But there has been a learning curve that he has welcomed.“Serving as president has taught me the power of grace, patience, and listening. BOSFL has pushed me beyond my comfort zone in the best ways — personally and professionally,” Boyd said. “Being in service to a nonprofit I care so deeply about helps me to let go of my own problems and focus on something bigger than myself. It’s humbling and fulfilling all at once.” In Boyd’s mind, BOSFL is special for a reason. “Without a doubt, it’s our people. BOSFL is 100% volunteer-run — over 200 volunteers, 12 coordinators, four standing committees, and a dedicated board. It’s the passion and dedication of these folks that make the magic happen. People want to be part of this mission because they know their voices matter and their work makes a difference,” Boyd said. Indeed, the volunteers of BOSFL stand in solidarity as they serve the LGBTQ community. Each volunteer knows they are truly making a difference when so many are struggling. “It’s a great organization from the community and for the community,” said member Mario Trottier. “BOSFL gives back so much to all that makes it impossible for me not to be part of it. But mostly, I truly enjoy seeing how much it has grown since the days I was a board member in its first year. There was no question in my mind, when I returned to Florida after a 13-year hiatus, I wouldn’t get re-involved in this organization. To top it off, it gives me a wonderful way to meet the community.” For many, the Bears of South Florida may well be superheroes when it comes to their efforts to raise funds for the most vulnerable in the LGBTQ community. As for Boyd, he looks onto a fellow BOSFL board member as his own hero. “Harvey Shapiro is my hero — I always call him the godfather of the Bears. At my first event in 2018, my social anxiety kicked in, and I was ready to leave after five minutes. Harvey stopped me at the door, handed me a serving spoon, and got me volunteering,” Boyd said. “That small gesture changed everything — I found connection through service. Harvey later invited me to board meetings, became my mentor and friend, and continues to challenge and inspire me more than anyone else in our organization.” For the Bears of South Florida, giving isn’t just a value — it’s their superpower. In Prague, on August 24, 2022, the Extraordinary General Assembly of ICOM has approved the proposal for the new museum definition with 92,41% (For: 487, Against: 23, Abstention: 17). Following the adoption, the new ICOM museum definition is:“A museum is a not-for-profit, permanent institution in the service of society that researches, collects, conserves, interprets and exhibits tangible and intangible heritage. Open to the public, accessible and inclusive, museums foster diversity and sustainability. They operate and communicate ethically, professionally and with the participation of communities, offering varied experiences for education, enjoyment, reflection and knowledge sharing.”The first gay museum in the world is the Schwules Museum in Berlin, Germany, which began as an exhibit in 1984 and opened as a dedicated museum in 1985. The Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art in New York City, founded in 1969, is sometimes considered the first museum dedicated to gay art and is a separate, but equally significant, institution. And right here in our own backyard we have the pride of Fort Lauderdale: SNMA was founded in 1973 by Mark N. Silber. The collection was housed in his parents' home for 10 years. It was moved to a classroom at the Sunshine Cathedral, around 1983. The library merged with the Boca Raton -based Southern Gay Archives which were organized by Joel Starkey and collectively they formed Stonewall Library & Archives, Inc. In 2001, the library and archive moved into the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of South Florida at 1717 North Andrews Avenue. After some trial and tribulations, the current location opened in February 2009. OutSFL reached out to the Director of Development, Monique Force-Setlock, to find out a little more about the museum, this what she told us: “SNMA is dedicated to preserving and sharing queer history, culture and stories. We house a vast collection of books, archival materials and artifacts that reflect the richness and diversity of LGBTQ+ experiences across generations. “Stonewall hosts exhibitions, programs and events that foster dialogue, celebrate resilience and amplify voices that have too often been marginalized. Visibility matters and preserving cultural memories is essential to building a more inclusive future. We are unique because we serve as both a cultural anchor and a living archive for the LGBTQ+ community. We offer a place where our stories are honored, studied and shared. Stonewall is committed to preserving LGBTQ+ history, our collections and programs are designed to inspire advocacy, foster understanding build bridges across generations and ensure that queer history is never forgotten.“Winning the OutSFL award for the second time in a row is an honor that speaks to the heart of our mission. It comes directly from our community, and it reflects the trust, engagement and appreciation for the work that we do.\"– PIER ANGELORUNNER-UP: BONNET HOUSEPhoto courtesy of Stonewall National Museum & LibraryBROWARDBEST MUSEUMSTONEWALL NATIONALMUSEUM ARCHIVES & LIBRARY1300 E. Coffee originated in the forests of Ethiopia and was first consumed as a food by nomadic tribes before becoming a brewed beverage in Yemen by the 15th century. It spread to the Middle East, where coffeehouses emerged as social and intellectual centers. Coffee then reached Europe in the 17th century via trade and became a widespread global commodity through colonization, with the Dutch notably growing it in their colonies in Indonesia.Do you want a good cup of Joe? Then Stork's Bakery & Cafe is the place. OutSFL reached out to Owner Peter Dekaj and the is what he told us:\"Those who think that Stork's is just a coffee shop couldn't be more wrong. We feature seven types of freshly brewed coffee each. We also offer breakfast, lunch and dinner items to eat in or take home. In addition to fresh sandwiches, wraps, salads and more we have a very successful catering department. The baked goods are always fresh and include Danishes, muffins, scones, cakes for a variety of occasions, pies, cookies, and bars plus seasonal and holidays 'desserts. Stork's offers online ordering for take out via UberEats and Doordash.\"\"What makes Stork's unique is the feeling of community that people get when they come here, it's common for perfect strangers to become friends as they dine near each other in the dining room or the covered patio,\" Dekaj added.– PIER ANGELOBEST COFFEE HOUSESTORK’S BAKERY2505 NE 15TH AVE, WILTON MANORS, FL 33305STORKSBAKERY.COMRUNNER-UP: JAVA JOES Photo courtesy of Stork'sDo you really like cleaning your house? This is what he told us: “I've been working in social services since 2006 and my heart has always been with the LGBTQ+ community. Becoming a counselor felt like a natural step because“I wanted to create the kind of safe, welcoming space I know so many people need. In my practice, I get to walk alongside people as they navigate their journeys — celebrating their strengths, standing with them in the hard moments, and being someone they can count on. I feel especially honored to support my trans brothers and sisters, who face unique challenges that no one should have to face alone. What makes me unique in our community is the way I combine both my professional experience and my personal passion for advocacy.“Beyond my counseling practice I also serve through my nonprofit work with the Imperial Sun Court of All Florida, raising funds, building awareness and supporting organizations that strengthen the community. It's about trust, uplifting voices, and creating opportunities for people to feel empowered to embrace who they are. My hope is that people see me also as a neighbor, and advocate and someone who genuinely cares. Winning the Readers’ Choice Award means so much to me because it comes from the people I care about most: my community.”“It tells me that the work I pour my heart into is making a difference, it encourages me to keep speaking up for those whose voices still need to be heard. This award feels less like recognition of me and more like a celebration of us all, compounded with the progress we're making together.”– PIER ANGELOBEST NEW LGBTQ ADVOCATEDIXON BLOOMRUNNER-UP: MICHELLE SANTOS Photo courtesy of Dixon BloomBROWARD

It is a type of anxiety disorder that can cause significant distress and avoidance of dental care. Do dentist visits make you anxious? You are not alone. I have changed dentists all my life but I think I have found my comfort zone at Island City Smiles right here in Wilton Manors. And yes, the place can actually make you smile. BROWARDChiropractic medicine originated in 1895 when Daniel David Palmer performed the first spinal adjustment on a man named Harvey Lillard, who was partially deaf. Palmer, a magnetic healer, believed the adjustment restored Lillard's hearing and that spinal misalignments (subluxations) were the root of disease, a belief he founded in both spiritualism and a knowledge of anatomy and physiology. He established the Palmer School of Chiropractic in 1897, and the term \"chiropractic,\" from the Greek words for \"hand\" and \"doing,\" was coined by Samuel Weed. This year, the winner of the Readers’ Choice Award is Dr. Thomas Wiest of New Journey Chiropractor & Wellness. OutSFL reached out to him to learn more about his practice. This is what he told us: \"There is a concerning stigma that divides the general public that you should not use a chiropractor if you have pre-existing conditions, and they only crack backs. It is a misconception since the profession requires the highest education and experience as any professional claiming a Doctorate title. At New Journey we take pride in using state-of-the-art equipment and invest hours of work in continuous research. The Greater Fort Lauderdale LGBT Chamber of Commerce (GFLGLCC) continues to set the standard for what an LGBTQ+ business organization can be—dynamic, connected, and deeply rooted in community. Readers selected the chamber as this year’s Best Business Group, recognizing the impact it has on both local businesses and the broader economic landscape of Broward County. For CEO Jason Nunez, the honor carries special meaning. “Winning the Readers Choice Award truly means a lot to me. It’s an opportunity for folks to have a voice—and that makes it even more special,” he said. “So often, as business leaders, we get caught up in the day-to-day operations and don’t always pause to see or hear the full impact we’re making on others. This recognition is a beautiful reminder that what we do matters, that people are noticing, and that the work we pour our hearts into is making a difference in our community. I’m deeply grateful for that acknowledgment—it inspires me to keep showing up and giving my best every single day.”The GFLGLCC serves as the leading voice for LGBTQ+ and allied businesses throughout Greater Fort Lauderdale and beyond. Their mission, as Nunez describes it, is “simple yet powerful—to promote economic growth, visibility, and equality for all by fostering an inclusive business community that celebrates diversity and empowers success.” Through year-round programming—including networking events, tourism partnerships, member showcases, and supplier diversity initiatives—the chamber has built a reputation as a true connector in the region.“We’re more than just a membership organization; we’re a network of passionate professionals, entrepreneurs, and community leaders who believe that when we support one another, we all thrive,” Nunez said. Their signature mantra, the S.O.M.A. philosophy (“Support Our Members Always”), is reflected in every event, partnership, and opportunity the chamber creates. One of the chamber’s most distinctive strengths is its formal recognition by the National LGBTQ & Allied Chamber of Commerce. “What makes us unique is that the GFLGLCC is the only LGBT certifying body in Broward County recognized by the National LGBTQ & Allied Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC),” Nunez noted. This allows the chamber to guide local LGBTQ-owned businesses through the certification process, helping them unlock national contracting opportunities and participate in major corporate supplier diversity programs.Above all, Nunez wants the community to understand the heart behind the chamber’s work. “This isn’t just about business—it’s about people, connection, and community,” he said. “Every event we host, every partnership we build, every introduction we make is driven by the belief that when we support one another, we all rise together.”–JASON PARSLEYBEST BUSINESS GROUPGREATER FORT LAUDERDALE LGBT CHAMBER OF COMMERCEWWW.GOGAYFORTLAUDERDALE.COMRUNNER-UP: WILTON MANORS BUSINESS ASSOCIATIONBROWARDPhoto by JR Davis48 | OUTSFL | YOUR CHOICE AWARDS PRESENTED BY GRIECO FORD OF FORT LAUDERDALE
