ENVIRONMENTAL
MENTORING COMMITTEE
The Human impact on the earth’s ecosystem has led to the constant degradation of the
environment which has resulted in a global climatic change. Environmental Education can
help to make the people aware of how their actions impact the environment and how it can be
minimized. Keeping this in mind the Environmental Mentoring Committee was constituted
as a part of Institutional Social Responsibility with the goal of sensitizing the students and
through them the community towards various environmental issues.
The following activities were conducted during the academic year 2018-2019:
1. Plastic collection Drive
Plastic has emerged as one of the most widely used materials, across the globe. This has
resulted in a substantial increase in plastic waste dumped all over the world leading to negative
impact on the environment.
The Maharashtra Government imposed a ban on use of plastic from 23-6-18. In view of the
Maharashtra Plastic Ban, the college decided to ban the use of the following plastic items in
the college campus: plastic carry bags, water bottles, disposable plastic items like spoon, cups,
glasses, bottles, any item made from thermacol.
The Environmental Mentoring Committee organized an awareness campaign and plastic
collection drive from 20-6-18 to 29-6-18. Students were encouraged to deposit the unused
plastic materials in collection boxes placed in the college campus, instead of dumping them in
BMC dustbins. Staff and students actively participated in this drive.
85kg of plastic was collected in this drive which was handed over to the NGO ECO-ROX for
recycling.
The college received certificates from the recycling company and the NGO.
2. Awareness lecture on recycling of tetra packs
Tetra Packs are cartons that are used to package milk, juice and various other liquids. These
containers allow food to be protected from contamination by bacteria and other microbes,
thereby increasing the shelf life of products.
An awareness lecture on recycling of tetra packs was organized on 11-8-18. Ms. Priyanka
Sarkar, Operations Manager of NGO Sampurn(e)arth Environment Solutions was the resource
person. She gave a power point presentation, interacted with the students and explained to
them the current status of waste management practices, waste segregation at source and need
for recycling tetra packs.
Tetra Pak cartons are fully recyclable. The paperboard (which is 75% of the carton) is recycled
into paper products and the 25% remaining fraction (consisting of the polyethylene and the
aluminium) can be recycled into panel boards, roof sheets and so on. These points were
highlighted by the resource person.
110 students from different classes attended this session.
3. Inter-
collegiate event
‘Defeat Plastic
Pollution’
This year’s World
Environment Day had the
theme Beat Plastic Pollution
and India was the global host of
this year’s event. It urged individuals to
reduce the production and use of plastic and
explore sustainable alternatives. In view of the plastic
ban announced by Govt. of Maharashtra, Guru Nanak College
conducted an awareness campaign along with plastic collection drive.
In order to sensitize the student community and spread awareness about plastic pollution, the
Environmental Mentoring Committee and Department of Environmental Studies organized
an Inter-collegiate event “Defeat Plastic Pollution” in collaboration with BMC, F-North ward.

their ideas and gain knowledge.

College highlighting the issue of plastic addiction, problems of plastic and how to overcome
this problem.

well-wishers made this event a grand success.
This inter-collegiate event gave an opportunity to individuals for various colleges to
be a part of a collective effort towards a common cause i.e. “SERVE TO CONSERVE
ENVIRONMENT”
4. Composting of Solid waste
Composting is nature’s way of recycling. Composting biodegrades organic waste. i.e. food
waste, manure, leaves, grass trimmings, etc., and turns it into a valuable organic fertilizer.
Our college has signed an MOU with NGO ECO-ROX who guide us for our composting
project. Composting is carried out in compost pit which is installed on the ground floor
and also in 03 barrels which are kept on the terrace. The garden waste is composted in the
compost pit and the wet waste generated from the canteen is composted in the barrels. The
non-teaching staff Mr. Jeeva takes care of the project under the supervision of Ms. Rashmi
Joshi, Joint-Secretary, NGO ECO-ROX.
In order to reduce the amount of nirmalaya (flower offerings) generated during Ganapati and
Dusshera festival, reaching the sea and adding to pollution, the college takes the initiative of
treating it by composting. The NSS students collected 210 kg nirmalaya from puja pandals
in and around Sion-Koliwada.It was transferred to the compost pit to convert to organic
manure. The manure obtained is used as fertilizer for the college garden and green house.
In order to sensitize our students regarding the importance of composting, an awareness
lecture was organized on 13-10-18. Ms. Rashmi Joshi, Joint-Secretary, NGO ECO-ROX was
the resource person. She gave a power-point presentation and explained the details of the
process. She encouraged the students to promote composting in their house and societies.
A ‘Swachhata Pledge’ was also taken by the students.
5. Paper Recycling
The recycling of paper is the process by which waste paper is turned into new paper products.
It has a number of important benefits besides saving trees from being cut down. It saves waste
paper from occupying landfill and producing methane as it breaks down.
As a part of implementation of sustainable waste management and recycling initiative a MOU
of reutilizing waste paper was signed with NGO Sampurn(E)arth Environment Solutions
Private Limited (SESPL).
In order to sensitize the students regarding the importance of paper recycling, awareness
lectures were conducted in every class and students were requested to discard waste paper in
separate bins so that it is not mixed with other type of wastes. The newspapers from library
and waste paper collected from office, examination unit and other departments were given
for recycling. During the academic year approximately 1700 kg of waste paper was given for
recycling.
The college received folders and A4 papers from SESPL made from recycled paper.
6. E-waste Recycling
Electronics waste, commonly known as e-scrap and e-waste, is the trash generated from
surplus, broken and obsolete electronic devices. E-waste or electronics recycling is the process
of recovering material from old devices to use in new products. Recycling e-waste enables
us to recover various valuable metals and other materials from electronics, saving natural
resources (energy), reducing pollution, conserving landfill space, and creating jobs.
An E-waste collection drive was also organized in the college. Awareness sessions were
conducted.
115 kg of E-waste collected was handed over for recycling to the NGO on 7-12-18. The
college received a certificate of appreciation from the NGO and recycling company.
7. Workshop on Home Composting
Compost is decomposed organic material that is produced when bacteria in soil break down
garbage and biodegradable trash, resulting in a product rich in minerals that is ideal for
garden or landscaping. Composting is one of the simplest ways of contributing positively to
waste management.
In order to sensitize the students, a workshop on ‘Home Composting’ was conducted on
7-12-18. 20 participants including students and staff members attended this workshop.
The resource person was Ms. Rashmi Joshi, Consultant, Solid Waste Management. She
gave a power-point presentation on the problems faced in waste disposal and explained the
importance of composting as a solution. She discussed the different types of composting
and the basics of the process. She emphasized on how this process can be used at home to
compost kitchen and garden waste.
A hands-on training session was conducted where the students were provided with the
materials required for doing composting at home viz. bucket / basket, culture, wet waste. She
taught the students to make the holes for aeration and layering in the bucket / basket. Each
participant prepared a basket/ bucket which they carried home so that they can regularly
transfer the kitchen waste and convert it to organic manure. This will help in reducing the
amount of wet waste dumped in BMC dustbins.
A question answer session was held where the students clarified their doubts.
Students were given participation certificates.
