SIKH ISM

India is a vast country with a rich and varied heritage. In this unique country is followed several religions
such as Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Jainism, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism and Sikhism. Unlike other
religions, Sikhism is comparatively a young religion. It is less than six hundred years old, for its
founder Guru Nanak Dev ji was born only in 1469. When Guru Nanak appeared on the scene,
India was bring ruled by Muslim kings. In their enthusiasm to convert non-Muslims to Islam, these
rulers oppressed their subjects in several ways. They imposed the Jizya- a religious tax paid by all
the non-Muslims. The most important posts were reserved only for the Muslims. To add to their
misery, some ruthless rulers showed open disrespect to some non-Muslims places of worship.
As if the tyrannical Muslim rulers were not bad enough for the Hindus, their own ‘Pandits’ and
‘Brahmins’ too had begun to exploit them by forcing upon them futile and expensive ceremonies
and rituals. Such acts of the religious preachers only helped to strengthen the evil caste
system. It was not only Hinduism that went downhill; even Islam witnessed deterioration .In
fact both the religions were being corrupted by the high priests and religious authorities of
their respective faiths.
At this juncture, when Guru Nanak Dev Ji offered them the simple ‘Sikh religion; teaching
the oneness of God’, there were many willing followers. According to Guru Nanak, there is
but one God whose name is truth. He cites this simple concept in the following three magic
words: ‘Ek omkar satnam.’
Guru Nanak thought of God as the Supreme Being: Universal, all powerful and truthful.
He placed truth and God above all religious ceremonies and manifestations. All the
other Sikh Gurus who followed Guru Nanak preached his teaching and wisdom, which
they repeated in their own characteristic way. These teachings by the Sikh Gurus are
compiled in the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of the Sikhs. It includes hymns
by the Sikh Gurus as well as those of Hindus, Muslims and the so called untouchable
saints and sages. It is written in the spoken idiom of the people to whom the masters
delivered their message of devotion to God and service to humanity. The Sikh
regards the Granth Sahib as the embodiment of their Gurus, who are thought of
as only one person, the light of the Guru’s soul having been transmitted to each
of his successors in turn.
The Sikh religion is based on the Guru- Disciple relationship. The very word
‘Sikh’ comes from the term ‘Shishya’ which means discipline. And in Sikhism
the role of the Guru is very significant, for he is the link who connects man with
man and ultimately with God. Since the Guru is the bridge between man and
God, he must be perfect in all respects. The Sikh Gurus were perfect and
are considered as such in the Sri Guru Guru Granth Sahib. The king of the
Gurus come to an end with Guru Gobind Singh. He ordered that after him Shanti Chaudhary
the Sikhs should regard the Guru Granth Sahib as the –living Guru. S.Y.B.A.

THE JOURNEY

We are going on a journey,
We are going all the way,
A riding in a wagon,
On soft, sweet & scented bay.
The Wagoner is waiting,
To take us on our journey,
To a farm house by the sea.
Our great big friend the horseswwwww
Are joining in the fun,
A knowing look they’re meaning,
While waiting in the sun.
It’s such a jolly farm house,
In the relay by the sea,
And the farmer’s just as jolly,
As any man could be,
There isn’t any hurry,
The ride is splendid sport,
The wood, a windy common,
Then a little sleepy post,
The farmer’s wife is waiting,
With strawberries for tea,
And cream & smile of welcome,
In the farm house by the sea,
And when the day is over,
Saare Jahan Se Achha!!! All tired with sheer delight,

We’ll climb up to our bedroom,
The thirst for water ends as soon as we drink water, To sleep away the night,
The thirst for Independence ended as soon as we got freedom, Where linens smell of lavender,
I believe that, one day, the thirst for a casteless society will also end. Then making full of glee,
Surely, there’s no need for another Mahatma Gandhi or Ambedkar, but surely you We’ll hear the farmer calling,
and me, “The backbone of India”. And murmur to the sea.
Time to stand erect towards Humanism. Your duty does not end in just sharing a pity
message or a video to ten people....
As we proudly say “All Indians are my brothers and sisters” therefore I believe that we
all are one family and no more different caste or religion.
Humanity doesn’t come in just saying ‘Being Human’ it should exist in one’s heart to
really be a helping hand for others.
...And then at last there will exist only two castes i.e. Men & Women...

When you feel down.

Difficult to hold the tongue. Your little trials
Easy to ask forgiveness. And lend a hand.

Difficult to learn from them. Because they care.

I WONDER
And then I pressed my shell,
Close to my ear,
I wonder why the grass is green, And listened well,
And why the mind is never seen?
And straightway like a bell,
Come low & clear,
Who taught the birds to build the nest? The slow sad murmur of distant seas,
And told the trees to take the rest?
Whipped by an icy breeze
Upon a shore,
Oh, when the moon is not quite round, Wind swept & desolate,
Where can the missing bit be found?
It was a sunless strand that never bare,
The footprint of a man,
Who lights the stars, when they blow Nor felt the weight,
out, Since time began,
And makes the lightning flash alert?
Of any human quality or stir,
Save what the dreamy winds & waves incur,
Who paints the rainbow in the sky? And in the hush of water was the sound,
And hangs the fluffy clouds so high?
Of pebble rolling around,
For ever rolling with the hollow sound,
Why is it now, do you suppose, And bubbling sea weeds as the waters go,
That Dad won’t tell me, if he knows? Swish to & from,

THE SHELL

I WONDER
And then I pressed my shell,
Close to my ear,
I wonder why the grass is green, And listened well,
And why the mind is never seen?
And straightway like a bell,
Come low & clear,
Who taught the birds to build the nest? The slow sad murmur of distant seas,
And told the trees to take the rest?
Whipped by an icy breeze
Upon a shore,
Oh, when the moon is not quite round, Wind swept & desolate,
Where can the missing bit be found?
It was a sunless strand that never bare,
The footprint of a man,
Who lights the stars, when they blow Nor felt the weight,
out, Since time began,
And makes the lightning flash alert?
Of any human quality or stir,
Save what the dreamy winds & waves incur,
Who paints the rainbow in the sky? And in the hush of water was the sound,
And hangs the fluffy clouds so high?
Of pebble rolling around,
For ever rolling with the hollow sound,
Why is it now, do you suppose, And bubbling sea weeds as the waters go,
That Dad won’t tell me, if he knows? Swish to & from,

The Nightingale

The specked bird sings in the tree,
When all the stars are silver-pale,
Come, children, walk the night with me,

And we shall hear the nightingale.

The nightingale is a shy bird,
He flits before you through the night,

And now the sleepy role is stirred,
Through all its green and gold & white.

The moon leans from her place to hear,

The stars shed golden star dust down,
For now comes in the sweet of the
years,
The country’s gotten the greenest

gown.

The blackbird turns upon his bed,
The thrush has open a sleeping eyes,

Quiet each Donny sleepy-head,
But who goes singing up the sky.

It is, It is the nightingale,

In the tall tree green upon the hill,
To moonlight and the deny vale,
The nightingale will sing his fill.

He’s but a homely, specked bird,
But he has gotten a golden flute,
And when his wondrous song is heard,
Blackbird & thrush & lark are mute.

Troop, children dear, out to the night,
Clod in the moonlight silver-pale,
And in the world of green and white,
Linson Mathew “This you shall hear the nightingale”.

Higher education institutes need to address this. The learners in the age bracket between adolescence
