The Pridi Banomyong Library is a riverside

of the Chao Phraya River. As the central
library of the Tha Phra Chan Campus, its catalogue
holds over a million books in various subject
areas including law. All books are retained on
the shelves in the Library’s three underground
storeys where students can also make use of
study rooms, computer labs, and entertainment
corners. There is also a section dedicated to
ASEAN studies. The Library offers a number
of online services: for example, an online library
catalogue and an inter-library loan service which
allows students to arrange a book delivery within
Thammasat University’s campuses.

THA PHRA CHAN International LL.B. Program In Business Law | Student Handbook 2019
Faculty of Law | Thammasat University
Just south of Thammasat University, is the Tha
Phra Chan area which is frequented by students
and tourists for food, Thai desserts, books and
supplies, consumer goods, antiques and the ferry
crossing over the Chao Phraya river to Mahidol
University’s Siriraj Hospital. The world’s largest
Buddha-image market and Mahathat Temple,
or Wat Mahathat, are also in this neighborhood.
On weekends, Prachan Road is partially closed in
order to host cultural shows and concerts.
– 57 –
GRAND PALACE
East of Tha Chang (see below) stands the
magnificent Grand Palace built by King Rama
I when Bangkok was established as the capital
city of Thailand in 1782. Most buildings within
the compound were designed and decorated in
the Thai style and were used mainly for state
functions. The present King, however, does not
live in the Grand Palace. Another attraction within
the compound is the Temple of the Emerald
Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew) which contains the
most revered Buddha image in Thailand.
PAK KHLONG TALAT
Walking further down the road along the river
brings one close to the Memorial Bridge.
Flowers, vegetables and fruits are sold, both
retail and wholesale, amidst bustling streets at
the Pak Khlong Talat. Those wishing to buy
fabric may visit the nearby Phahurat Market
(Indian Market), not far from Chinatown.

Faculty of Law | Thammasat University
South of Tha Chang is Tha Tien where some
wholesale and transportation businesses still
operate. The ferry to the Temple of Dawn
departs from here, and canal tours can also be
arranged. The center of interest in this
neighborhood is the Temple of the Reclining
Buddha, or Pho Temple (Wat Pho), which
contains a 46-meter-long reclining Buddha.
This Temple is considered by many to be the first
university in Thailand since it had been a place
for students and villagers to learn classical Thai
medicine, massage, arts and culture a hundred
years before the creation of Bangkok.
A number of formulas for herbal cures inscribed on
the walls and sculpted figures in various postures
demonstrate how to relieve muscle pain.
THA CHANG
Further south along the Chao Phraya is Tha
Chang (Elephant Pier) which was once used by
mahouts to feed and clean their elephants. It is
always full of tourists as they come here for canal
tours and the ferry to the Temple of Dawn, or
Wat Arun and other places. Across the street lie
the Grand Palace and Silpakorn University whose
students are fond of displaying their art works on
the roadside, especially paintings. Food, fruits
and drinks are everywhere to cater for the busy
tourists and students.
