Foreword When we fill our minds with prayers, there is no space for anxieties, worries, temptations and resentments. I would like to share with you Pope Francis’ exhortation to the General Audience on 10 February 2021:- Prayers are not merely magic words for Christians but they are a reminder to us of God’s sovereignty and how much we are in need of His grace. As we approach God in prayer, this encounter we have with Him is deeply personal. Sometimes we are unable to put into words what we want to say to our Father in heaven. The Editorial Team and I would like to thank all generous contributors for allowing your Personal Prayers to be published and shared with all the Faithful. Your Personal Prayers will help us communicate more fervently and frequently with God in times of joy, in times of gratitude, in times of interceding and in challenging times. Message from Parish Priest 2 Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Penang | From Me To You ~ Prayers from the Heart | 2023 Dear God, Help me keep coming to You in prayer, even when I don’t know what to say. Help me believe You can take the thoughts from my mind and stirrings from my heart which I humbly present to you when I do not have the words to speak. Help me have peace even when I do not have the answers to my prayers, and help me trust You to answer them in the way You best see fit. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Dear friends, As we navigate through life, prayers keep us close to God when the world is so distracting. It is truly encouraging to read so many personal prayers shared in this compilation. This willingness to share truly reflects our uniqueness as a community as we humble ourselves before the Lord in surrender to His providence. As we strive in the path of synodality to include, care and unite with each other, I pray that God, our Father, will receive these sincere prayers made from the heart. EXAM Heavenly Father, maker of heaven and earth. You promised the apostles the coming of the Holy Spirit. We ask You to send the Holy Spirit to us as we prepare for our exam. May the Holy Spirit guide us and help us to remember what we have learnt in class. Give us the spirit of wisdom so that we may be wise in making decisions. Give us the spirit of knowledge so that we may be able to answer the questions. Give us the spirit of understanding so that we may understand the questions and answer them well. We surrender ourselves to You, O Lord, during this exam. Remove all the nervousness and anxieties that we feel. Fill us with Your Spirit. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. 5 HUMILITY Lord Jesus, teach us how to be humble. Teach us how to search for what is good and avoid what is evil/bad. Grant us the desire to love You more and more. Lord, continue to remind us that You love us all the same, that the first will be the last and the last will be the first. Help us to serve You with joy and love and without complaining. May Your Spirit always be with us and help us to love one another in our daily life. All this we pray, through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen. OTHERS Heavenly Father, as I begin this day, I give thanks to You for Your love and mercy. I adore and praise You. You are my loving Father. I humbly ask for Your guidance and wisdom to use my time wisely this day. Help me to make the most of each moment, to live in a way that brings honour to You and love to those around me. When evening comes, may my heart be full of gratitude and my intentions be aligned with Your will. My joy is to see that someone is touched through my actions. I pray this in Jesus’ precious name. 6 PEACE When the noises of the world overtake me and weigh me down, Lord Jesus, come enlighten me. When my fears and anxieties threaten to overcome me and pull me into darkness, Lord Jesus, be my light. In my confusion and self-doubt, when I am losing the battle, Lord Jesus, fight for me. Give me the presence of mind to lift everything up to You, Lord Jesus, and help me to realize that I can accomplish nothing on my own merits - having no talents, no skills and no attributes that did not originate first as graces flowing from You. Open my eyes, Lord Jesus, to see others as You see them. Open my heart, Lord Jesus, to see myself as You see me. Amen. SPIRITUAL HUMILITY - A MUSICIAN’S PRAYER Dear God, may the music we play always come from our heart. May it touch the hearts and lift the spirits of those who hear it, not for our own glory, but for Yours. May each note resound with a joyful noise. May each phrase ascend as a symphony of praise. May each melody blend in perfect harmony with You. May each rhythm be an offering from the beating of our hearts to You. 7 RENEWAL Almighty ever-living God, we confidently call You Father as well as Lord. We thank You for teaching us, through your word in Galatians 3:11:- Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.” We believe, Father, we are the righteousness of God not because of what we have done but because of what Jesus has done for us. Therefore, help us to realize this truth in our daily lives so that we can become more and more like You. Renew Your Spirit in our hearts so that we may be transformed by the renewing of our mind, that we may reflect what it is that is good and acceptable and the perfect will of God in all that we do. Make us ever more perfect as Your children every day for Your glory. To be seen as Your Ambassadors, as it is written in 2 Cor 5:20, who carry Your presence, led by Holy Spirit, as we fulfill our task for which You have ordained us, proclaiming the Good News to all peoples, revealing the wonders of Your goodness and mercy. We pray, finally one day, having done all, we may enter into Your Kingdom, as our inheritance, which You have promised us, a life with You forever. We thank You, Father, for answering our prayers through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord and Saviour. Amen. 8 REPENTANCE I beg forgiveness, Lord, for the many times I took You for granted; believing that I had my life under control; for failing to let Your Spirit take control. The consequences of my non-God-guided actions showed me my failings. I had false pride which obscured my ability to stop and discern what it was that You wanted me to do. I repent, Lord, for following my will to no avail. I need to act in accordance to what I profess, “Thy will be done”. Even Jesus, Your Son, surrendered unto Your will in His tormented prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus is the model You sent down to earth for us to emulate in our life on earth, though it is not easy. But I can try to the best of my ability. I have learned the hard way to subdue my will to Yours. I seek your mercy and compassion for my pride and disobedience to the promptings and guidance of Your Holy Spirit. Look kindly on me, Lord. Keep me close to You, always, I humbly pray. Amen. GUIDANCE STRENGTH Heavenly Father, help us to grow in wisdom and knowledge that we may embrace Your saving hand and walk closely with You in this formation so that we may be the salt and the light in this world. 9 STRENGTH IN STUDIES Loving God, You are good and You are always there for those in need. Help me, Lord, as I have difficulties with some of my lessons. Send forth your wisdom into my mind, send your brilliant light so that I can overcome these challenges and do well in my studies. Give me the strength that I need and may everything that I learn glorify and honour Your holy name. All these I lift up to You through Christ our Lord with the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen. STRENGTH Heavenly Father, we offer You our body, mind and soul. May Your Holy Spirit be with us, enlighten and guide us in our daily life as we encounter Your presence. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. STRENGTH Lord, I pray that You will give us the strength and wisdom to overcome any obstacles that come our way. Please light the way in our darkest moments, so that we do not yield to the temptation of sin. Help us never to forget Your unconditional love for us when we are struggling and feeling helpless. I pray that Your love will inspire us to act like You in times of trouble, hopelessness and anger because through You, we can find our shelter and our peace. Amen. 10 STRENGTH Lord Jesus, I humbly come before You to ask for Your protection, guidance, strength, and blessings on my children who are living in a foreign land. May they never lose faith in You, Lord, but grow to love You more each day. We have planted the seed of Faith in them to know You and to love You. Lord, I surrender their lives to You to do Your will. I know that You will always be with them as Your love for us is so immense and unconditional. Thank you for all the blessings You have showered on us, Lord, and I pray that my children will always be in the company of good friends who are genuine, supportive, encouraging, and children of God. Mother Mary, please hear my humble pleas and may God through your powerful intercession hear and answer my prayers. Amen. STRENGTH Heavenly Father, open our hearts and minds to know and remember that You sent Your Son, Jesus Christ, Our Lord, to die for us on the Cross to take away our sins. Help us to be Your faithful servants so that we may merit the eternal life You promised us. This we ask in Jesus’ name. Amen. GUIDANCE UNITY Dear Lord Jesus, You know our hearts and our minds. You know my concerns which I pray for often and I thank You for my family. As a (mother, father, etc) I continue to pray that You will sow seeds of unity among my family members in spite of each member being unique. 11 UNITY Dear Lord, please melt hardened hearts; guide all members of my family with Your divine love; let Your light shine upon the good that I know abides within each person. Thank You for bestowing upon each of us this gracious gift. Let this virtue of goodness prevail over all pettiness, past hurts, and patronizing attitudes. Guide us towards becoming a God-centered family, not selfcentered individuals under one family name! With Your gentle love teach every of my family members to let go of their ego! I seek Your guidance with sincerity of my heart and trust that You will hear my plea for unity in my family. Amen. UNITY Oh God, You see all and know all. Guide me, Lord, to become more patient and understanding as a spouse and mother/father so as to be the unifying force within my family. Oftentimes I lose my patience and this causes lots of hurt and unhappiness for the family and for myself. These outbursts also stress me out which is not good for my health. I plead with You, Lord, to answer my prayer so that harmony, love, and peace may prevail in my household. Just show me how, Lord, to accomplish this especially when I am reading Your Word or praying because I am sure therein somewhere lies Your encouraging message for me. Amen. 12 UNITY God, You know our personal weaknesses and strengths. Allow us to experience Your presence and receive Your grace during this difficult time. Speak to each one of us in our hearts. Let us encounter Your true love so that we can forgive and accept everyone. Do not let our selfishness and ego be a stumbling block that prevents us from living a Catholic family lifestyle. Come Holy Spirit, teach us to learn and imitate the life of the Holy Family; Joseph, Mary, and Jesus. May our genuine love for one another grow daily and continue to live in peace. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen. WISDOM TO CHOOSE WISELY Come Holy Spirit, cover me with Your precious light and shield me from the evil one. Lord, I place my whole life in Your hands. Please do not look at my unworthiness but melt me and mould me to be the child that You want me to be. Grant me the wisdom to choose what is right and what will benefit Your people. Lead me and guide me to walk along Your path of truth and holiness so that You will be glorified. 14 GENERAL Psalm 51:7-8, “Father in heaven, purge me with hyssop, and wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Let me hear gladness and joy, and let the fractured bones rejoice”. Help me, Lord, to be non-judgmental and undergo personal transformation first. Thank you, Jesus, for each waking moment. Let Your presence surround me. Catapult me from where I am now to where You want me to be. Lord, make me holy as I cast my eyes on another and be quick to lend a hand to the needy. Lord, as I let go of each bad habit, please pardon my weaknesses and eliminate my sins and flaws. Come, Holy Spirit, shine on me and guide me. Help me always act in ways pleasing to You. As Psalm 119:133-137 says, “Establish my steps and direct them; let not any iniquity have dominion over me. Deliver me from the oppression of man; so will I keep Your precepts.” Take me the extra mile if it means saving even a soul. O Holy Spirit, fill me with Your strength and awe to be Your vessel of love. Mother Mary, untie the knots from any bondages and entanglements that are causing confusion and taking me on the wrong path. As I pay tribute to you, Mother, by reciting the Rosary daily, please help me overcome all my trials and tribulations. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen. 15 GENERAL Lord God, I give thanks to You for the wonder of Your creation. Lord God, You know me through and through; You know all the secrets in my heart - all the darkness that is in me. Father, I come before You with my broken heart and open it up to You. Lord, I pray that You will heal my brokenness and strengthen me with Your love. Amen. GENERAL Lord Jesus, You died for me so that I can live. I have tried my best to live life according to Your teachings but I have failed many times due to my human weakness. Lord, help me get out of my addiction to a sinful life. Make me into a new creation; help me to be devoted to You, Lord. Amen. HEALING MENTAL Lord, my (mention relative here) is suffering from cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy sessions. He/She is under great stress and is affected mentally and emotionally. His/Her condition has caused him/her to have a lot of anger and resentment which is let out onto the family. Lord, console him/her and grant him/her Your healing grace to sooth his/her pain and anxieties. Help him/her to surrender his/her situation into Your healing hands and please bless him/her with Your love and peace to heal and restore all wounded relationships especially with family members. 16 HEALING MENTAL Lord Jesus, You are the Son of God, always healing those interceding with You. Heal me, O Lord, from this sickness that has weakened me. Cure me of this sickness so I can serve You more fervently. Give me the strength that I need, O Lord, so that I can overcome these challenging times I am facing. All these I ask through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, our Mother, together with our Comforter, the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen. MENTAL/EMOTIONAL Lord, I surrender to You my son/daughter who has recently broken up his/her relationship with his/her girlfriend/boyfriend. Lord, grant him/her the wisdom to amicably resolve any arising issues and conflicts, and heal him/her from the distress, pain, and hurt from the breakup. We pray, Lord, that You will grant him/her the serenity to accept what he/she cannot change and to move on with his/her life. Lord, please bless him/her with Your love to forgive others who have hurt him/her. Make him/her increase in Your love, peace, and hope, Lord, so that he/she may abound in love for others and continue to show love and be loved. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. 17 HEALING HOLISTIC HEALING Heal my child, I pray O Lord! Heal the hurt, the sense of confidence which is sometimes low, sometimes overly confident. Heal the losses, the ability to control temper which flares unwarranted. My child has a good heart but is reluctant to acknowledge even when it is made known and prefers to show otherwise. Please heal my child’s hardened heart. Mother Mary, guide my child to Your Son, Jesus Christ so that He may write His name on my child’s heart to soften my child’s personality. I fear my child might lapse in faith through the careless attitude shown. Please Lord, heal my child’s heart, mind and body and let my child find the soothing balm and calm that is in You alone. Have mercy on my child. Grant me the strength to continue to lift up my child through prayer and deed because I love my child unconditionally like how You love us all. Continue to grant me the strength to minister to all my child’s needs, especially the emotional and spiritual needs. All these I lift up to You in the name of Your precious Son, Jesus Christ. Amen. Please help him/her to remain strong in faith so that he/she may overcome all his/her challenges, confident that You are by his/her side always. Lord God, I surrender my dear friend to You completely and totally. Please hear my prayer for him/her. I pray for all his/her needs and grant them through Jesus Christ, Your Son, according to Your holy will. To You, Father, I give praise, honour and glory. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen. PHYSICAL/SPIRITUAL Lord, I pray for my friend’s (mention relative here) who is suffering from (mention ailment here). He/She is in constant pain. I pray to You for him/her. Please be with him/her in times of need. Ease his/her pain and suffering and give him/her the strength to bear them with courage and patience. Amen. PHYSICAL Dear Lord, I do not know what to do with this sickness and pain. Sometimes I feel it is unbearable and the treatment that I need to go through seems to be another wave of pain. Please help me Lord, to accept this cross as I really need Your grace to go through this. I do not know whether I can survive this but Lord, please do not abandon me when I am in pain. Strengthen me in Your loving kindness and help me to go through this pain. I ask this in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
19 HEALING PHYSICAL My Lord Jesus, with an attitude of gratitude I give You thanks and praise for Your everlasting glory (Psalm 86:12) as I recall the marvels You have worked in my life (Psalm (125). And now, clothed in humility (1Peter 5:5b), I offer unto You my plea: H E A L I N G Amen. = Heal me Lord from my disruptive ailment. = Energize my enfeebled heart, mind, and body. = Angle Your benevolent vision upon my serious disturbance, I beseech You. = Lord, with You alone lies the power to heal where human expertise in medicine has failed. = In You alone lies my trust. Unceasingly I pray. = Noble was Your suffering for all of humanity. = Grateful and hopeful, on bended knee, this of You I seek: Your healing hands lay on me, O Lord! Let the warmth of Your healing love pass through my body to give me good health and heal me of any illness I may have so that my body will function the way You created it to be. Mary, my Mother, teach me to unite my sufferings with that of your Son, Jesus. Through your motherly love, calm my fears, increase my trust in God's loving care and healing, intercede for me for the healing that I need and let me be restored to full health of mind, body and spirit so that I can serve the Lord. This I ask in the most mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Divine Healer. Amen.
20 HEALING PHYSICAL Lord Jesus Christ, You said where two or three are gathered in Your name, You will be there. We are gathered together today to pray for our brother/sister (mention name here) who is not well. He/She is a child of Yours and You will always take care of him/her. Let him/her know that he/she is not alone and You are always with him/her. Kindly send down Your Holy Spirit upon our brother/sister (mention name here) and relieve him/her of any pain or suffering. Let him/her unite his/her suffering with that of Yours on the cross. Please give him/her the strength, courage and peace of mind and also complete recovery from his/her ailments if it is Your will. If not, I humbly pray that You will give him/her the strength and perseverance to carry his/her cross with love, courage and patience. 21 HEALING PHYSICAL Dear Lord, You deserve all the tribute I can pay You from my heart. It is the conviction of Your love and mercy that makes me both bold and humble to plead for Your healing touch on my (mention area for healing here). Long have I prayed, Lord, for this healing. Long have I undergone medical treatment but to no avail so far. But in You I trust and so unceasingly I pray, “Take pity on me, a sinner, Lord.” You love all alike so long as we turn to You. The healing power that is found in You, cannot be found elsewhere. Of this I am certain and that is why in my dire need for help, Lord, I ask for Your loving gaze upon my ailing (mention area for healing here) that it may be restored so that I may continue to serve you better. 44 RELATIONSHIP COUPLES Dear Father God, I do not know the path that You have set for me. But I pray that if the path is towards married life, please guide a good and god-loving spouse to come my way. Lord, with both our gazes set upon You, may we live our lives together in love with each other and with You. Amen. COUPLES Loving Father, You united us, an “odd couple” for so many years. Our spousal relationship has faced many trying times – misunderstandings, showdowns, disengagement, incompatibilities in more ways than one! Oftentimes I felt like throwing in the towel but ‘something’ made me hold back and persist. That ‘something’ was Your presence in all the unsavoury situations we went through! In keeping still and silent I recalled and realised that there are three persons in our marital relationship. You were the ’glue’ that kept us together despite our vast dissimilarities in personality. It was only decades later when I realised that without Your intervention, mediation, and loving gaze upon us, our union might have collapsed altogether. Your saving grace prevented us from going asunder! I simply and humbly seek Your providential care, concern, compassion, guidance, and presence so that we may live out our years in joyful gratitude to You.
