Can’t Say Sorry but Can Work Hard: Alia Bhatt on Nepotism

When Alia Bhatt was questioned about the ev-
er-raging nepotism debate, the actor confessed
that it exists. At a recent media interaction, Alia
said that she can’t wake up and apologise for
being a star-kid, but she can work hard to earn
her place in the industry.

“Nepotism exists in every field. My thoughts on
nepotism don’t come from a negative place. If
you know somebody from a certain field you will

love with acting and being an actor, I would be
devastated if I never got the opportunity.

satile actor has been signed for an integral role. A
Tsource says, “Kay Kay will exhibit shades of grey.”
Gowariker wanted no one else but him. Kay Kay did
not take long to say yes. He loved the script and has
consented in principle. The modalities are fast being
worked out.

Panipat is another historical saga from Gowariker’s
stable. This director clearly cannot do away with his-
tory to be projected on celluloid. Some of his movies
depicting history have flopped miserably but he re-
fuses to change tracks. Adds a source, “Gowariker is
obsessed with history. Movies succeed and flop. There
is no formula which can be used. If there was one, ev-
ery filmmaker would have minted money at the ticket
windows with every venture of his/her.”

Salman Khan Told

Sin-law, Ayush Sharma, Salman has provided a launch pad to many.

His latest protégé is Zaheer Iqbal and Pranutan, the granddaughter of the yesteryear actress
Nutan. Zaheer and Pranutan will be starring in Notebook produced by Salman Khan Films.
The trailer of the movie is out and we have to say it looks quite promising.

Feeling privileged to be mentored by the superstar, Zaheer said “In the last six years, there
must have barely been a day when I have not been with Bhai. He is the best thing that hap-
pened to me. I must have passed Galaxy Apartments every day, not realising that one day, I
would be spending time with Salman Khan himself.”

Zaheer got lucky when he was asked to meet Salman after being spotted at a wedding “My
friends and I had staged a skit, Latte With Lakhan, about my sister and her husband. After the skit,
Bhai came up to me and told me to meet him in a few days. When I went to his place a few weeks
later, he introduced me to his trainer and asked me to work out with him. A month later, he called
me again and told me, ‘Remove your T-shirt. You make your body, I will make you a hero now.”

Iqbal started his career with Jai Ho, where he served as an Assistant Director. Later, he was roped in
for Salman’s home production Notebook.

“ Sara Ali Khan opens up about

movie dreams, family & more in

her first interview ”

Her genepool is rich and lush. Granddaughter of ace cricketer, the late
Nawab of Pataudi and the renowned Sharmila Tagore. Daughter of
the suave Saif Ali Khan and the spunky Amrita Singh. Sara Ali Khan has
an ancestry rare and privileged. To her royal sensibilities, she brings in
self-awareness. An early realisation that not only is she to the manor born
but she is also to the manner born. A degree in law and political science
at the Columbia University in New York in 2016, was a follow-up to the
nerd that she is. But her dreamy romance with razzmatazz had begun
way before her ardour for books got legitimised. And that ‘first love’
could no longer be denied. Her countdown to fame kick-started when
the scale dipped from a whopping 96 kilos to a svelte 55. The delay in
her debut vehicle Kedarnath was a blessing of sorts. Because Decem-
ber 2018, showcased Sara scaling the extremes of the spectrum within a
matter of days. If Kedarnath had viewers swept by her prodigious histri-
onics, Simmba serenaded her as the masala queen. Imtiaz Ali’s Love Aaj
Kal 2 opposite ‘crush’ Kartik Aaryan promises to woo the beauteous Sara
all set to surrender. Aristocracy may be her inheritance, her ambition is
her own. Here’s celebrating the princess who’s now ready to sway the
showbiz court…

While Kedarnath revolved around you, your presence in Simmba was
limited. So, what attracts you to a film?

It’s a different reason each time. I’m a huge commercial cinema fan, a
huge Rohit Shetty fan, a huge Ranveer Singh fan. I got the opportunity
to be Ranveer’s heroine in a Rohit Shetty film. So, why wouldn’t I do it? In
Kedarnath, the character was written so beautifully, so wonderfully nu-
anced. There are some projects that you just want to be part of. There
has to be a fine balance between being creatively satisfied and com-
mercially successful.

Is there any strategy you intend to follow? Sara Ali Khan’s First interview

As a newcomer, what’s utmost important is conviction. I need to be
convinced about my director, the script or the role or preferably all. Peo-
ple talk about that one Friday. What they don’t realise is how many
Mondays, Wednesdays and Sundays, are spent shooting. You live in a world, far away from home, in an unfamiliar
environment, working towards something. The only way I can work is honestly, purely and with conviction. So that’s
the only strategy I will follow.

Is superstardom your aim or you just want to be known as a great actor?

I don’t want any filmmaker to turn around and say, ‘Yeh Sara nahi kar payegi’. That’s my aim. Personally, I don’t
believe in stardom. I find it all a bit funny, a bit weird. I don’t mean to ridicule the concept because our country
loves stars. We worship them and we celebrate them. I’ve been a huge fan of Sridevi. I believe she’s the last star our
country will see. Now everyone has become a little common. You can see me singing with Ranveer, you can see me
fooling around with Sushant, you can see me dancing alone…. all on Instagram sitting on your pot. Where is the star-
dom? It’s become so accessible. I believe the only way forward is doing meaningful work that people connect with.

Sara Ali Khan’s First interview

That’s my endeavour. I want to do every kind of film. I’m lucky to have had films like Kedarnath and Simmba simul-
taneously because they helped me explain myself as an actor. Mujhe Ganga main dupki lagana hai, mujhe ‘Aankh
maare’ par nachna bhi hai… I want to do everything. I want to be able to position myself as cute, hot, funny, niche,
arty, commercial… . I’m here to act.

How ambitious are you?

I’m very, very, very ambitious. Dhirubhai Ambani International School, where I studied, is a competitive place. Co-
lumbia University is in the Ivy League. Bollywood is not relax, chillax, put on weight, wear your pyjamas and all will be
fine. I don’t believe that you can ever be ready to be part of Bollywood. But if you’re in it, you cannot not be ready
either. I’ve found my comfort zone. I’m okay in my own skin. Yet, I’m extremely ambitious. I want the best for myself.
But I’m also real and I don’t beat myself up if I don’t achieve something. I’m aware of my shortcomings. I’ll work on
them.

Those days I had shed a bit of my weight and was at 86 kilos. I’ve
hung out with her in Los Angeles, in Bombay. I’ll always wish the
best for her. I haven’t hung out with her recently, since we’ve both
been busy. But whenever I see her, there’s mutual admiration for
each other’s work. The last time we met, someone had put up a
comparison of us in sarees on Instagram. I asked her, ‘Did you see
the latest?’ We’re comfortable in our own skins and respect each
other. Also, we understand the industry. I understand that it’s inev-
itable for the media to compare us. If at all, I find it a little funny. I
guess, it would have been irritating for Janhvi before my film re-
leased. She’d done a film and I hadn’t. At least now the compari-
sons make sense because we’re both actors.

Looking back, when was that moment when you realised you
wanted to be an actor?

I donHonestly, there wasn’t any moment of epiphany as such. If
I go back in memory, I remember singing and dancing to Bolly-
wood music when I was around four or five. I used to mimic ads at
home. I couldn’t even say ‘Nirma’, I used to say ‘Mirma’. I couldn’t
say ‘bungale ke peeche’, I’d say ‘bungeke peeche’. When we
went for admission in a school, mom said ‘Ab aap adab se, ta-
meez se kuchh boliye.’ I went ahead and sang, ‘Dama dam mast
kalandar, Alida pehla number’. (Smiles) Everyone understood that
I was a crack child. As far as I can remember, this is what I always
wanted to do.

How did your parents react when they learnt about your desire to
join films?

The shocking thing for them was the fact that this nerd, who enjoys
studying, wants to do films. When I was going to Columbia,

people cautioned my parents, ‘Yeh ladki topi phira rahi hai, yeh paise dubake aayegi. She’ll attend college, obtain a
degree but will come back and do movies. But my parents are not hypocrites. This industry has given them everything
they have. They’re aware and appreciative of that. They love this job; they believe it’s the best thing to do. But a sense of
balance is required when you’re part of this world. They knew that given their support, I’d be able to maintain that.

Being a brilliant student, weren’t you deterred by the thought of choosing showbiz?

I wasn’t deterred but in fact distracted from showbiz. Reason being I was heavy – weighing 96 kilos. I had no confidence
about my looks. But I was decently smart in studies. Teachers like you because your marks are good. Friends like you be-
cause you’re funny and can help in their homework. So being an overweight but smart girl studying in Columbia Univer-
sity was not a deterrent to being an actor, rather it distracted me.I grew comfortable being fat. That was the worst thing
hormonally, emotionally and physically for the profession I wanted to be in. Because I was fat and intelligent, I got away
with bad logic. It was like, ‘I’ve got seven A grades. So why can’t I eat five pizzas?’ I began thinking lawyer ban jaoongi,
doctor ban jaoongi, ya White House chali jaoongi. That was my attitude.

From 96 kilos to the svelte star you are today… that’s quite an achievement!

Yes. I’m 55 kilos now but I guess I’ll be 54 soon. I don’t relate to that girl anymore. I look at my past pictures and go, ‘What
the hell wasI thinking?’ I’m a foodie. So, it wasn’t a joke to lose weight. But when you want something badly, then it’s all
good. I’m lucky to be doing what I so love. I never thought I could love anything more than besan laddoos but today
working out is above that. My work comes first whether it’s acting, performing at events or doing photo shoots.

Your parents separated when you were a kid. Do you carry any scars?

Deepika Padukone kicks off prep

for Meghna Gulzar’s Chhapaak

Deepika Padukone is set to play the role of acid attack survivor
Laxmi Agarwal in Meghna Gulzar’s upcoming film Chhapaak.
The movie is scheduled to go on floors by the end of this month.

However, a week before shooting begins, Padukone, who is
co-producing the film with Gulzar and Fox Star Studios, will head
to Delhi to understand the character better and get accus-
tomed to the locations.

“Deepika met Laxmi in Delhi a few years back. As for the film,
she is working eight hours a day to perfect the role. Besides
readings with Meghna, she is also using photographs and vid-
eos of Laxmi as her reference points. The team has also collat-
ed data about other acid attack survivors to get an in-depth
understanding about the subject,” Mumbai Mirror reported.

Meghna had earlier said that when she first saw pictures of
Laxmi before the attack, the only person that came to her mind
was Deepika. “I could not believe when Deepika agreed to
play the role. To essay the role of an acid attack survivor is very
difficult,” she said.

A Story of Trauma and Triumph

After news reports of Vikrant Massey starring opposite Deepika Padukone in Chhapaak surfaced, the
actor and producer Deepika Padukone took to social media to explain what the film is about and to
share her excitement.

“A story of trauma and triumph. And the unquashable human spirit. Elated to collaborate with Fox Star
Studios on
‘Chhapaak’,” Deepika tweet.

The Meghna Gulzar directorial is a Fox Star Hindi project. Talking about Vikrant’s character, Gulzar had
shared: “He’s a north Indian man who used to be a professional but decides to leave it all and be-
come an actor. And then starts this campaign against acid attack violence. I’m glad Vikrant is a part
of the film and I think I can speak for both Deepika and me that we’re really excited that he’s playing
this part.”

Fatima Sana Shaikh opens up

hugs of Hindostan actor Fatima Sana Shaikh has said that sexual assault has been normalised to such an extent that women

Twant to expose that side of my life… I’m dealing with it, speaking to people I’m close to. Just like I won’t judge those who want
to share their horror stories, I expect not to be judged for not sharing mine.”

Applauding the MeToo movement for providing a platform for victims of sexual harassment, she further said, Now sexual predators
are scared of being shamed in public and shunned by the industry. For so many years we had normalised assault to such an extent
that women had come to accept abuse as something that was normal.”

Fatima also admitted that the box office failure of Thugs of Hindostan made her so disheartened that she didn’t come out of the
room for days and wanted to run away some place else. “We were all disturbed, we had worked on the film for a-year-and-a-half,”
she sighs. However, she does not regret doing the film: “Why would I not do a film like Thugs? I still don’t consider it a setback to my
career.”

Aamir, too, had earlier, apologised for not being able to entertain with the film. “I would like to take full responsibility for that. You
can be sure that we tried our level best. There are people who have liked the film a lot and we would like to thank them. We are
happy that they liked the film but that’s a minority. Majority of the people did not like the film and we are aware of the fact. So
there is no doubt that we did go wrong. I want to apologise to the viewers who came to watch my film in the theatres as I was not
able to entertain them despite trying my best. But those who came with so many expectations did not enjoy the film and I am feel-
ing very bad about it,” he had said.

Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, the film starred Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif and Amitabh Bachchan in lead roles. It was loosely
based on Philip Meadows Taylor’s 1839 novel Confessions of a Thug. Made at a mammoth budget, the film suffered heavily in its first
week itself with its first Monday collections standing at a meagre Rs 5.25 crore. According to Boxofficeindia.com, the total collec-
