In honor of December 30, 2018
Mr. & Mrs. Honoree ‫כב טבת תשע"ט‬

They are amazing

On behalf of the entire Beth Aaron family, it gives me great pleasure to

wish a sincere mazel tov to our guests of honor, Lorraine and Rabbi Sam

Vogel, to our Shelly Leffel service awardees, Elissa and Joel Richter and

to the recipients of thMe Erit. a&n SMharpsir.oEYxouanmg Lpelaedership award, Rachel,

Aliza, and Talia Sperber, on their well-deserved honors. We all feel a

deep sense of pride and admiration, as we join in recognizing their

extraordinary efforts and accomplishments on behalf of our ‫בית הכנסת‬.

How fortunate our community is to have had these wonderful
individuals lead our ‫בית הכנסת‬. Their devotion and dedication to our
shul is nothing less than remarkable. They have diligently served our
community in countless ways and have worked tirelessly on behalf of
the shul. Our beloved honorees are true “doers” and we have all been
the fortunate recipients of their tireless efforts.

Their dedication and commitment to the needs of the ‫ ציבור‬is matched
only by their genuinely modest and unassuming manner. They serve as
sterling role models for all who have the privilege of knowing them. May
‫ הקב"ה‬continue to provide them with the strength to carry on their
honorable efforts. May He bless them and their families with health,
happiness and success for many years to come. Mazal Tov!

their hard work and efforts to make this evening entertaining,

In Parshas Terumah, perek 25, pasuk 8, Hashem commands Moshe
to tell Bnai Yisrael “‫”וְ ָ֥עשׂוּ ִ֖לי ִמ ְק ָ֑דּשׁ וְ ָ ֽשׁ ַכנְ ִ֖תּי ְבּתוֹ ָ ֽכם‬, And they shall make
Me a sanctuary and I will dwell in their midst” The Or Hachaim
Hakadosh asks why does Hashem use the word “mikdash” in
directing Bnai Yisrael to create a place where Hashem’s shechinah
would dwell, when every other time the Torah describes the place
actually built as a “Mishkan.” The first answer given is that the
commandment to create a Mikdash for Hashem is a mitzvah
applicable for all generations. The word “‫ ” ִמ ְק ָ֑דּשׁ‬is used by the
Torah as a reference to the ultimate

Congregation Beth Aaron

dwelling place of Hashem in the future. The Jews who left Egypt
built the Mishkan as a temporary structure at Hashem’s direction
so that it could be easily assembled and disassembled to
accommodate their travel through the desert. Once Eretz Yisrael
was conquered, settled, and in a more permanent state, Shlomo

Hamelech completed his fatIhnehr,oDnoovridofHamelech’s vision of a more

permanent structure, the Beis Hamikdash, to fulfill this

commandment of ‫ ְק ָ֑דּשׁ‬M‫י ִמ‬r‫ִ֖ל‬.‫֥עשׂ&וּ‬Mָ ְ‫ו‬. Tros.dHayowniothreouet the Beis HaMikdash
we fulfill this obligation TthhreoyugahreouarmMaizkidnagsh Me’at. Our shul

serves as a focal point for our community, and where we unite to
serve Him. The second answer given by the Or Hachaim Hakadosh
is that the word ‫ ִמ ְק ָ֑דּשׁ‬was used to highlight that everything done

on behalf of the MishMkarn. w&asMcornss.idEexreadmhoplyleor Kadosh. So even

though the place created was called a Mishkan, all tasks associated
with donating, creating, building and maintaining the Mishkan was
considered important and holy. I believe this second answer can
also be extended and applied to all of the past, present and future
efforts made to design, create, build and maintain the Mikdashei
Me’at throughout the generations. The work done to fulfill the
mitzvah of ‫ וְ ָ֥עשׂוּ ִ֖לי ִמ ְק ָ֑דּשׁ‬will forever be considered holy and an
important part of who we are as a nation.

Tonight, we honor and express our hakaras hatov to specific
individuals who have significantly contributed to the creation,
design, building, maintenance, and future growth of our own
Mikdash Me’at and of our greater community. The Vogels have
been involved with our shul and the growth of our greater
community for over 40 years. Whether individually as a past shul

president, a former yeshivaIhnighhosncohrooolfprincipal, teachers in local

yeshivot, and a current core member of Shearit HaPlate of Bergen

County or together asMa cro. u&pMle rrusn. Hninogntohreeweell known and loved

pillars of our community and we are forever thankful for the
foundations they have laid, their leadership and inspiration for a
generation of our youth, and the continual quiet chesed they

perform on a day to dMayrb. a&sisM. rs. Example

The Shelly Leffel service award recognizes on an annual basis
people within our community who treat our shul like their second
home, like Shelly Leffel z”l did. These people do everything and
anything to ensure that our shul is functioning and operating
effectively on a daily basis. Our shul would not be able to function
without the Richters. In addition to Joel volunteering as a gabbai,
rental coordinator, and member of the seudat shilishit committee,
Joel leads the earliest daily minyan as chazzan during the entire

month of Elul and Yamim Noraim. Behind the scene, the Richters
quietly ensure that the shul’s monthly calendar gets updated and is
available for all our members and the extended community. We
thank the Richters for always putting the shul first and for helping
us know when and where to go within our Mikdash Me’at to serve
Hashem on a daily basis.

In honor of

The youth of our shul represents our future as a nation. We love

our children and cheriMshrt.h&e tMimresw. Heospneonrdeweith them. If given a
choice, some people wouTlhdesyayatrheaatmthaezyinwgould probably want to

spend most of their time with their young children. One exception
to this is probably the few hours on Shabbos morning when
davening in shul. This is where Rachel, Aliza and Talia Sperber

come in. Some of theMfirrs.t &meMmorrsie. sEaxnadmpopsilteive associations our

children have with our shul is their time spent in groups on
Shabbos. For so many years, our youth have been taught,
entertained, and inspired by the endless energy, enthusiasm and
leadership of Rachel, Aliza and Talia. Our children today
understand what it means to be part of a shul and to give back to
the youth of our shul because of these amazing women. We are so
proud to present the Eitan Shapiro Youth Leadership award to
Rachel, Aliza and Talia Sperber and thank them for keeping our
kids out of trouble, and for giving our children a Shabbos and shul

On behalf of all of the wonderful volunteers of your Men’s Club, I have the

Sisterhood Message

How timely and appropriate that this year’s dinner falls between the

parshiot of V’Yakehl and Pekudei. The root words of V’Yakhel and

Pekudei are Kahal and Pakad, respectively. Kahal represents

community and Pakad represents the individual. In order to be

successful as a community you need both. A minyan requires 10

individual men. Each one is coIunnhteodnaosraoufnique person, but collectively

Guests of
Honor In honor of

Mr. & Mrs. Honoree

Lorraine and Rabbi Sam Vogel’s stories both begin on New York’s Lower East

Side, but it is there that the initial similarities end. Sam is the son of immigrant
parents, and his path includes Yeshiva Rabbi Shlomo Kluger, MTA, Yeshiva
University, and Semichah from RIETS. Lorraine is a second-generation

American, and her road pMassre.d&thrMougrhst.heEDxoawmntopwlneTalmud Torah, a

recurring television appearance on “The Fourth R,” Tranquility Summer Camp,
Seward Park High School, and City College. But Hashem brought them
together--according to legend, through a traffic ticket and a judge seeking
re-election--and the rest, as they say, is history.

Our honorees’ married life began in the Bronx, where they welcomed
their eldest daughter Sharona. In 1966, Sam and Lorraine moved to Teaneck,
attracted by the trees and life away, but not too far, from the city.

Congregation Beth Aaron
43rd Annual Journal Dinner

Here, the Vogel family grew with the addition of children Rachelle, Yonina, Avi,
Chanan, and Chava, and later, children-by-marriage Shlomo, Chaim, Danny,
Aviva, Amy, and Yoni, as well as dozens of grandchildren and
great-grandchildren, kain yirbu.

The Vogels were family #70 in Teaneck’s fledgling Jewish community and it

didn’t take long for them to makeItnhehiromnaorkr. oWfithin the first week of moving to

By profession, Sam and Lorraine are teachers. For Sam, this meant a career

teaching math at GeorgeMWras.h&ingMtonrHsig. hESxchaomol inpWleashington Heights, with

afternoons at Frisch and at TABC, where he was the founding secular studies
principal. For Lorraine, teaching--in between children-- included Hebrew school
in Tenafly and special education and math at GW High School.

For many, the Vogel name is synonymous with Ma-Tov Day Camp, where
hundreds, if not thousands, of children experienced summers filled with Torah,
sports, and numerous other activities. While Ma-Tov closed its doors eight years

ago, after 27 seasons, the camp’s influence can be measured by the frequency
with which Sam and Lorraine’s children and grandchildren meet camp alumni
and former staff, each with a wonderful story or special memory to share
connecting them to this extraordinary couple.

The Vogels’ connection to Beth Aaron dates back to its beginning as early

members of the shul. Initially, it wIanshdaoungohtrerosfSharona and Rachelle that
brought the family to BethMAarr.on&wMhernst.hHeyobengoanreweorking there as youth
group leaders in 1977. SamTsehrveeydaasrepraesmidaenztinfrgom 1979 – 1981, but is best

known as a gifted baal tefilla, a talented athlete in the Beth Aaron Softball
League and the original Candy Man. Among the numerous committees and
initiatives that Sam and Lorraine were involved in over the years were,

decorating the shul for SMhavru.ot&, leMadinrgst.heEsxinagimng ponleSimchat Torah and

making dozens of peanut butter sandwiches for the children’s lunch on Yom
Kippur. They could always be counted on for having great costumes for the shul
Purim parties – who can forget the year they came as Bigsan and Seresh-and
being involved in all of the fun!

When it comes to chesed and serving the community, Sam and Lorraine are role
models for us all. Over the years, they have been involved in numerous
communal organizations from shuls to yeshivas, to the mikvah and, most

recently, Lorraine’s involvement with Shearit HaPlate. Everything is done
quietly, humbly and with respect for those they have the privilege of helping.

While the Vogel children have dispersed throughout Teaneck and beyond,
daughter, Rachelle, and son-in-law, Chaim, remain active pillars of our shul to
this day. And, wherever they live, Sam and Lorraine’s children and adult

grandchildren follow their lead byInbehinognleoardeorfs in their respective communities.

Joel and Elissa agreed to accept the Shelly Leffel Service Award because they
knew that it was the right thing to do; not for the honor's sake, but as another
opportunity to help the congregation that they love. Having given to Beth Aaron
for decades, it was important at this time to accept Hakarat HaTov from the shul
(and because the Rabbi told them to accept it!)

Joel and Elissa have three children. Ari, the oldest, is an IT network engineer

who works for Garb Consulting Group. Eitan, is currently learning in yeshiva in

Soon they each grew up into young teens and became group leaders. They really
got a kick out of watching the little kids in groups. Still, to this day, they love it
when the Rabbi comes to groups. Tali is still a loyal group leader. She even wakes
up early to watch the children who come in early!

Congregation Beth Aaron

As they became older, they helped their parents with various shul activities,
from helping cook chesed meals, packing Mishloach Manot, to helping with
larger events like the Shabbat Project Dinner. Often, you could find them after
davening, standing next to their Dad while he dished out kiddush food with a
smile. They love to help their Mom cook shabbos meals for their shabbos guests.

Aliza, Rachel and Talia are all gradIunahteos nofoYresohfivat Noam. Aliza and Rachel are

has encouraged them toMparrti.ci&patMe inrvsar. ioEuxs achmesepdlaectivities as part of the

larger Jewish community. Rachel and Aliza both volunteered with the
Friendship Circle. Rachel worked at the Jewish Youth Encounter Program,
helping Jewish kids with little background learn Hebrew and parsha. Tali
coached little kids for the Teaneck Youth Soccer League. Rachel went to
Szarvas, a camp in Hungary that helps kids from all around the world with little
or no Jewish background, learn about their Jewish roots. Last summer, Rachel
interned with the Honorable Judge Ruchie Freier. She helped Jewish women
suffering from domestic violence. Aliza is a very active participant in the

games and just enjoying being with other Jewish college students! Tali is
enrolled in the art track and is a member of the JV soccer team at Frisch.

helped them develop into compassionate teens and young adults. “Rabbi and
