FORT WORTH CHAPTER HISTORY
In spring 1955, at the request of Mrs. Sadie Gee of Dallas, Mrs. Dixie Ackerman assembled a group of women in the Fort Worth home of Mrs. Lonnie Odom.
Among those present were Jeffrey Adams, Armenta Hill, Yvette Melton, Ollie May Belfrey, Bertha Reynolds, Joyce Hunter, Beverly Sims, and Bernice
Mebane. The group subscribed to the goals of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., and agreed to work diligently to meet the requirements of membership.
The goals of the local chapter were quickly accomplished and in October 1955, sixteen mothers were installed as the Fort Worth Chapter of Jack and Jill,
Incorporated, at the home of Mrs. Bernice Mebane. The installing officer was Mrs. Nellie Gordon Roulhac, National President of Jack and Jill of America, Inc.
Other chapter members were Jeffrey Adams, Ollie Belfrey, Edna Busby, Mary Frances Clemmons, Margie Denton, Audrey Douglas, Armenta Hill, Essie
Ransom, Bertha Reynolds, Edna Sessions, and Beverly Sims.

Fort Worth As A Chapter
Over the years, the Fort Worth Chapter has hosted
many regional events. This includes a biennial
Regional Mothers’ Conference and two annual
Regional Area Work Days. The most recent host
was performed in 2015 at the Regional Annual
Area Work Day which was held at the DFW Hyatt
Regency Hotel. In addition, the chapter partnered
with the North Texas chapter and hosted the 50th
Regional Teen Conference in 2004 at the DFW
Hyatt Regency Hotel. The four-day leadership
conference was attended by over 600 persons
from 25 chapters. In 2006 the members proudly
hosted Children’s Cluster for the DFW metroplex
members aged 6-12. The event was a safari
overnight adventure at the Fort Worth Zoo. Once
again, the Chapter hosted Children’s Cluster in
2011 at the University of North Texas Health
Science Center.
The Fort Worth Chapter will host Children’s
Cluster in 2022. There are 40 mother member
and 74 children to date.

Opal Lee’s Juneteenth Vision Is Becoming Reality
Opal Lee lived in a predominantly white neighborhood in Fort Worth. At the age of 12, a white mob of 500 burned and vandalized her home. These
events pushed Mrs. Lee to become a civils right activist. In 2016, she walked from Fort Worth to Washington DC in an effort to make Juneteenth
named a national holiday.
Juneteenth is now a federal holiday in the United States. 46th President Joe Biden signed the bill on June 17, 2021, making Juneteenth the eleventh
American federal holiday and the first to obtain legal observance as a federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was designated in 1983
On Sunday, July 18th, at the historic I M Terrell Academy, Chapter President Kenyail Carr of Fort Worth Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc.,
honored Mrs. Opal Lee, the Mother of Juneteenth with a proclamation. This event, hosted by Fort Worth African American Women Leaders, paid
tribute to Mrs. Opal Lee.

The History and Celebration of Carole Robertson
Four Little Girls
On September 15, 1963, a bomb exploded at the 16th Baptist Church
in Birmingham, Alabama. This racially motivated crime killed Denise
McNair (age 11), Addie Mae Collins, Carole Robertson, and Cynthia
Wesley (all age 14). Carole Robertson was a member of the
Southeastern Region of Jack & Jill where her mother served as the
Regional Director. At the 1964 National Convention in Seattle, Jack
and Jill of America Inc. established that each September chapters
would commemorate the memory of Carole Robertson, as well as
continue to strive towards justice and equality.
Carole’s Tribute 2021
The Fort Worth Chapter celebrated the life and legacy of Carole Robertson on
September 25, 2021. The event was held at Camp Carter YMCA in Fort Worth,
TX. We set up a table in memory of Carole with her picture, pink and blue
flowers, and white balloons with the inscription, “Forever in our hearts.” The
history of Carole Robertson was read by Teen President Madison Muckelroy
and Teen Vice President Peggy Carr. Afterwards, the children released balloons
in remembrance of our sister - Carole Robertson.

Jack and Jill Day was an amazing opportunity to bring together chapter families to kick off the 2021-2022 program year. The celebration took place at 10 am at Camp
Carter YMCA in Fort Worth, TX on September 25, 2021. Jack and Jill Fort Worth Chapter Olympic Games was our theme this year! We created a field day schedule to
help with the flow of events. Fathers were the timers, judges, and coordinators of activities. There was an opening torch ceremony. The torch was passed from the
oldest athlete to the next in each grade group. President Kenyail Carr received the final pass of the torch from the youngest athlete. She led the chapter children to the
pavilion where Pastor Louis Carr prayed over the event. There were three competitions to medal in: a timed obstacle course, archery, and the 25/50-yard dash. The
children competed by grade groups and gender for first, second, and third place medals. The Olympic winners took pictures with their medals behind the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
place stands. All winners were photographed together at the end. Grade group participants also had the option to participate in gaga ball, basketball (12 and up), sand
volleyball (12 and up), giant Jenga, corn hole, connect four, visit the reptile habitat, see baby goats, explore the nature trail, and/or brave the suspension bridge.
We also learned about African American Olympic athletes via a trivia game. Robinson’s BBQ catered and Kona Ice partnered with the Teen Auxiliary to help fundraise for
the Jack and Jill Foundation and a community partner. Foundation Chair McCormick distributed the loose change boxes. The Community Service Committee had a book
drive to support the Como Community Center in Fort Worth, Texas. Father Roberts Albert had a KICK-OFF campaign by teaching our children about getting on the ballot
for Tarrant Co. for 2022. Parents signed and supported our soon to be candidate. In addition, Father Roberts shared his personal testimony about the power of voting
and how every vote counts. We accomplished the following thrusts: Social, Recreational, Legislative, Cultural, and Community Service. It was a beautiful Covid-19 safe
activity to start the program year!
