25 English Form 2 Unit 3 PdPc PAK-21 Activity PL PAK-21 (Think-Pair-Share) 1 Have students paired up. 2 Teacher asks students to read an article on https://success.com/how-to-rise-up-after-life-knocks-you-down/ about success. 3 Students in each pair read the article and share their ideas among themselves. 4 Students then create a poster/ leaflet based on their discussion. 5 Once they are done, each pair must then share their ideas and thoughts with the class. So don’t give up on your hopes and dreams, and do not blame others for your failure. Look at other ways of achieving your dreams. Change your aims if you have to. And be sure to surround yourself with positiveminded people. Remember, do not dwell on your mistakes for too long, but accept them. When you fail, your natural instinct will beat yourself up. However, dwelling on your failures and blaming yourself for your mistakes are going to drain your energy. Instead, you need to accept that mistakes. Once you accept this, you can focus on shaping your success. You build on your failure and you use it as a stepping stone. I’m not saying that you need to forget your mistakes, but you don’t dwell on it. You don’t let it have your energy or any of your time or space. From my point of view, when you mess things up, don’t get stuck in a pit of failure, but continue pressing forward. What you need to do is dust yourself off and press forward. By pressing forward regardless of the obstacles, you have the chance to make progress. You can’t change what has happened, but you can try again, and this time will be better than the last. Last but not least, you need to get yourself organised after you have failed. By creating a plan for your future based on what you have learnt from your mistakes, you can take back control of your situation. This puts you in a better position to succeed, as you know where you are heading to and how to get there. Besides that, you are always not alone. Get help and advice from others. You will lose nothing by talking to them. You will also need support and help at some point. The truth is that failure is never the end of the road. It is simply an indicator that there are some parts of yourself and your life that you need to put more effort into in order to get the results that you desire. So get up from your failures and rise above them. Take the first step forward and you will be all right! Contributed by, Maisie CONTOH

You may use the words given in brackets, or your own ideas to complete the conversation about ways to enjoy good health. Layla : Hi everyone. Health is the greatest wealth. Without good health, life cannot be enjoyed to its fullest. What do you think (1) (ways − health) are the good ways to enjoy good health ? Any ideas? Isaac : I would say (2) (regular exercise − thrice − healthy − not plagued − illnesses) regular exercise is essential for good health. We need at least 40 minutes of active exercise thrice a week. The best reason to exercise is that it keeps us healthy so that we are not plagued by all kinds of illnesses . Layla : You’re right. With regular exercise, (3) (metabolic rate − food − ingested − leaner) our metabolic rate improves and food is ingested more efficiently. The food that we take is used fully and is not stored in the body as fat. As such, our body becomes leaner . Peyton : For me, I would say (4) (sleep − repair − replacement − body cells) sleep is necessary for repair and replacement of body cells. Without sleep, our mind and body will not be well rested. Your heart, for example, needs to rest at night. We need at least eight hours of sleep every day . Layla : You’re definitely right. A good night’s sleep (5) (maximise problem-solving skills − enhance memory − poor sleep − impair brain function − weight gain) can maximise our problemsolving skills and enhance our memory. Poor sleep has been shown to impair brain function. Also, poor sleep is strongly linked to weight gain . Grayson : From my personal experience, I would say (6) (adopt − healthy diet − nutrients − control − sugar − salt − intake) it’s vital to adopt a healthy diet with a good mix of nutrients, such as carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and minerals. We should include a lot of leafy green vegetables in our diet. We’ll also need to control our sugar and salt intake . Layla : And never skip breakfast. (7) (starts − right − lays − foundation − health benefits) Eating breakfast not only starts your day right, it also lays the foundation for life-long health benefits . Kaylee : Both of you are right. But let me add one more point − (8) (drinking − clean water − hydrated − body − made up − water ) drinking enough clean water is equally important as it keeps you hydrated. We should drink at least eight glasses of water every day. Do you know that around 60 percent of our body is made up of water ? Layla : You really have your point. I believe that (9) (indulging − unhealthy habits − ill health) indulging in unhealthy habits, such as smoking, drinking and substance abuse, is disastrous. They will lead to ill health. For example, excessive smoking could lead to lung and heart disease. It is the root cause of bad health . Anyway, let me conclude by saying that we should adopt all these measures to lead a healthy lifestyle. Good health can help us live longer. PL Digital Resource 9 CONTOH

When you exercise, you also refocus your attention from your daily problems to the workout itself. You can gain a fresh perspective even on the most preoccupying concerns in your life by taking an exercise break. Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise. A good laugh and a long sleep are the best cures in the doctor’s book. Men worry over the great number of diseases, while doctors worry over the scarcity of effective remedies. The reason I exercise is for the quality of life I enjoy. Eat to live, not live to eat. Prevention is better than cure. An apple a day keeps the doctor away. To insure good health: eat lightly, breathe deeply, live moderately, cultivate cheerfulness, and maintain an interest in life. Better to wear out than to rust out. The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, not to worry about the future, or not to anticipate troubles, but to live the present moment wisely and earnestly. People who laugh actually live longer than those who don’t laugh. Few persons realise that health actually varies according to the amount of laughter. Good health is above wealth. Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live. Health is not valued till sickness comes. A smile is an unexpensive way to improve your looks. He who takes medicine and neglects to diet wastes the skill of his doctors. You are what you eat. Happiness lies, first of all, in health. The groundwork for all happiness is good health. Eat well, be active, feel good about yourself. A tricolour meal is a good deal. Seven days without exercise makes one weak. Never let the sun go down on your anger. A stitch in time saves nine. To get angry is to punish yourself with other people’s mistakes. He, who has health, has hope; and he, who has hope, has everything. Eat well, drink in moderation, and sleep sound, in these three good health abound. If you don’t take care of yourself, the undertaker will overtake that responsibility for you. When health is absent, wisdom cannot reveal itself, art cannot manifest, strength cannot fight, wealth becomes useless, and intelligence cannot be applied. The body is like a piano, and happiness is like music. It is needful to have the instrument in good order. A man’s health can be judged by which he takes two at a time − pills or stairs. From spine to endovascular procedures, machines have reduced the room for error in operations and are poised to get even more sophisticated in the year ahead. In June 2018, a study in the journal Nature Biomedical Engineering detailed the first surgery using robots to operate on a human eye. Researchers enrolled 12 patients who needed retinal surgery. One group was randomly assigned to robot-assisted surgery, while the other group received traditional manual surgery. Both modes of surgery were equally effective, though robotic surgery took much longer to perform. Still, this research is paving the way for robots to, in the future, perform surgical procedures that require more precision than human hands can offer. While it is not without its risks, Kybella is kind of natural. It’s a form of deoxycholic acid, a fat-busting molecule that occurs naturally in the body. With any luck, it should be available in the UK within the next couple of years. The cure for baldness Two major breakthroughs could spell the end of hair loss. Researchers at the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute in the US have successfully grown hair using human stem cells with the aim to transplant the cells in human subjects and permanently cure their baldness. Meanwhile, University of Southern California scientists have developed a plucking technique that hyper-stimulates hair growth. A Based on the article, state whether the following statements are TRUE or FALSE. 1 The scientists dubbed diabetes the silent killer. FALSE 2 Ovarian cancer often goes undiagnosed and doctors are only able to detect the cancer at the later stages of the disease. TRUE 3 Kybella is an injectable drug used to destroy fat cells under the chin to improve one’s profile. TRUE 4 To date, scientists have not developed a surefire method to stop malaria outbreaks. But I think one of the most important inventions with the greatest impact on human life is the computer. At present, you can see computers being used everywhere. Embedded computers are also found in many devices, from the MP3 player to fighter aircraft, and from toy to industrial robot. Initially, computers were very big and occupied a room. They were used for special purposes and did not work very fast. As time passed, computers evolved and got faster and smaller, until the personal computer (PC) was invented, which led to a vast revolution in human life. With the coming of computers to our home, we can perform many tasks that were far-fetched before. We can buy and sell things, chat with friends and manage businesses from the home. Travel has become easier too. You can book your air tickets and select your hotel. Indeed, you can evaluate hotel facilities and even see the inside of hotel rooms before booking it with just one click. Computers can do numerous mathematical calculations with incredible speed and great accuracy. For example, a person can simultaneously execute more than one task, thereby increasing productivity and reducing human errors. This shows how human involvement is minimised by just supplying data to the computer for evaluation and getting results in a fraction of seconds. Thus, I can say that the computer is one of the most outstanding innovations of the last century. Next, computers can store large amounts of information and a user can retrieve it later for further processing. For instance, trend analysis and forecasting in a company are done by referring to historical data. (Suggested answer) CONTOH

43 English Form 2 Unit 5 These examples illustrate the usefulness of computers for measuring the success of a company. From this, we know that computers have contributed significantly to the world’s economy. Finally, there are many uses of computer in different fields of work. Engineers, architects and filmmakers all use computers to design things. Teachers, writers and most office workers use computers for research, word processing and emailing. Hospitals and government departments require it. Small businesses can use it as a point of sale and for general record keeping. Therefore, the computer is definitely the best invention in the last 100 years, considering its presence in almost every field, and its usefulness. Let’s hope that new software and hardware will keep on making the computer better as life without it is unimaginable now. Julie : The Tube (2) is one of the best and most comprehensive transport networks in the world with around 24 million journeys made each day, so it’s important that everything runs smoothly to avoid delays . Riley : Yes, indeed. For example, (3) we stand on the right when using the escalators and leave the left free for others to walk down. It will speed up the travelling process and allow a more pleasant journey for everyone . Also, (4) let people get off the Tube before we board it, thus allowing more room for us to get on and passengers to alight the train . Julie : Do they have rush hour too? Riley : Yes, they do. (5) The Tube network is very busy during rush hour with commuters moving around the cities. So you can expect the trains and stations to be overcrowded between 7.30 and 9.30 in the morning and between 17.00 and 19.00 in the evening. Julie : Oh, it’s so similar that we’re facing in KL. The main problems tourists facing are pickpockets and street scammers. So just be wary of pickpockets operating in the busy stations and Tubes. Carry a bag with zips or keep your personal belongings and valuable items in your hotel. Julie : How’s the temperature inside the Tube? Riley : Well, (8) sometimes it’s hot inside. The Tube is over 150 years old and although the trains have been modernised, many still lack air conditioning and cooling units. Make sure you take a bottle of water with you, especially in the summer, as the long Tube journeys can get very hot at peak times . Furthermore, (9) don’t be afraid to ask for help. The London Undergrounds are well staffed with helpful officers who can guide you to the nearest exit, or help you plan your onwards journey. Julie : Did you check line closures every day? Riley : Yes, we did (10) check ahead and plan our journey to make sure there are no delays or closures on the lines, especially at the weekends when maintenance work is common. Transport for London’s website provides live network updates and will alert you to any disruptions and suggest alternative routes in advance. Are you feeling unwell? Student B : Not really, Rini. I just came back from my hometown, Alor Setar. Along my journey back home, I felt of being ill and vomited thrice. I think it was car sickness that caused me to vomit. Student A : Car sickness is actually a type of motion sickness. Motion sickness occurs when the brain receives conflicting information from our inner ears, eyes and nerves in the joints and muscles. You’re sitting low in the back seat of a car without being able to look out the window, or you’re reading a book in the car. Your inner ear will sense motion, but your eyes and body won’t. So the result might be an upset stomach, cold sweat, fatigue, loss of appetite or vomiting. It usually slows down as soon as the motion stops. So the more you travel, the more easily you’ll adjust to being in motion. Student B : Do you mean that motion sickness is caused by repeated movements when travelling, like going over bumps in a car or moving up and down in a boat? And the inner ear sends different signals to our brain from those our eyes are seeing. These confusing messages cause us to feel unwell? Student A : Yes, exactly. Student B : What should I do to prevent car sickness? Student A : First, you should focus on the horizon, or a distant, stationary object. Don’t read while travelling or use electronic devices. Try to look at things outside the car rather than focusing on books, games or films. Keep your head still while resting against a seat back. Well, taking naps during travelling might help. Student B : My mum said a ginger supplement combined with ginger snaps, ginger ale or candied ginger might help curb nausea. Is it true? Student A : Yes. Ginger supplements reportedly provide some relief from nausea associated with motion sickness. You can really try them. Some people also find that nibbling on plain crackers and sipping cold water or a carbonated drink without caffeine help. Student B : Okay, thanks for telling me all these. I’ll try them out. Student A : Adequate air ventilation might help prevent car sickness too. Try to keep the air clear of any strong odours. Student B : Noted. How to avoid motion sickness when travelling by train, ship and plane? Any ideas? Student A : Well, you can actually plan ahead. When travelling, avoid sitting in seats in the rear of the vehicle or seats that face backwards. Pick your seat where you’ll feel motion least. If you’re travelling by train, take a forward-facing seat near the front and next to a window. If you’re travelling by plane, ask for a seat over the front edge of a wing. Once aboard, direct the air vent flow to your face. If you’re travelling by ship, request a cabin in the front or middle of the ship near the water level. Student B : Thanks for all these helpful pointers. Hope they can ease my motion sickness gradually. Student A : No problem. The four-berth carriages come complete with cooking and sleeping spaces, although travellers will have to use the toilet facilities at various pubs and inns along the way. By day, explore long sandy beaches and peaceful countryside festooned with wildflowers and butter-yellow gorse. At night, set up a camp in a charming farm setting, toast some marshmallows over a campfire, roll out your sleeping bag and nap in the comfort of your covered carriage under the stars amid the musical backdrop of nature sounds. The days are open-ended, so the itinerary is entirely up to you, and your horse, of course. There are some physical health benefits to this kind of wild adventure travel. Scientists have recently reported that our modern obsession with cleanliness might be leading to a rise in allergies, asthma and inflammatory bowel disease. Getting dirty could just be the best path to developing a strong immune system. When you get dirty, you improve your physical health. Also, going on wild adventures raises your tolerance for uncertainty. Placing yourself in situations where things don’t always go as planned, such as on a horse caravan trip helps you learn to cope with the uncertainties in life. One of the best things about taking a different method of travelling and embarking on an adventure is that you can shed your familiar skin for a while and pretend to be anything you want to be before you take a drastic and permanent step. It really lets you safely ‘try on’ alternative lives. Who would you be if you lived there? 52 English Form 2 Unit 6 The alarm on my smartphone screeched with a mad vengeance. Rudely awakened, I reached out to snooze the device that’s the bane of my existence and looked at the time – 3.30 in the morning. The sky from across my hotel room still looked pitch-black. But in half an hour’s time, I needed to be at the lobby to wait for the car that would take me and my mate to experience my first ever hot-air balloon ride. We swiftly made our way to the hinterlands, passing through a city that was still largely asleep on a Saturday morning. The journey took about an hour. The lack of sleep did not make the ride any better. Once we reached the launch site, the discomfort from the bumpy ride melted away as my eyes took in the spectacle across the vast field. Huge roaring flames from a burner blasted out to inflate the balloon, casting a bright orange hue against the dark landscape. Once fully inflated, the balloon could stand as tall as a 10-storey building! There were five balloons ready to take flight, with each basket holding up to 20 people. As there were quite a number of tourists on that day, the basket I was on was at maximum capacity. ‘It’s a full house today!’ a staff remarked, before asking if we had any travel insurance in the event of any eventualities. ‘I’m just kidding, you’re in good hands! Our pilots are some of the most experienced in this country,’ he added with a laugh. That was very reassuring, I thought. But whatever jitters I had about taking off in an untethered giant balloon dissipated as we slowly took off. Words could not even begin to describe the sensation of the calming quiet up in the clouds, with the spectacular views of the landscape below and the skies above. It was all very (The Secret Life Of) Walter Mitty-ish. It felt like time slowed down while we were up in the air. Adding to the experience was the cool and crisp fresh morning air. Although it was terribly freezing, I was glad that I was dressed warmly in a light wool blend jacket. There’s the occasional sound of the burner, excited passengers ooh-ing and ahh-ing, birds chirping and dogs barking from a nearby vineyard. But as we were travelling with the wind, the atmosphere up in the sky, for the most part, was completely quiet. Breaking the silence, our pilot said the reason hot-air balloon flights took place so early in the morning was to catch optimal wind conditions. Balloons needed cool and calm winds to operate effectively. The hours following sunrise were the most suitable as the heat of the day had not descended yet. ‘Besides, isn’t the view of the sunrise remarkable?’ he added. The pilot was right – seeing the breaking dawn on this majestic hinterlands while floating gently over a picturesque landscape was simply breathtaking. Every now and then, we could even make out hopping silhouettes on the ground. Upon closer inspection, it turned out, they were kangaroos! Everything about the journey was simply magical. When the balloon finally landed, my head and heart still felt like it’s up in the clouds. Bangkok is a wonderful metropolitan, featuring Buddhist temples, floating markets, colourful night markets, street foods and glitzy shopping malls. Along with a fascinating history and a unique culture that includes delectable Thai seafood delicacies. Many visitors regard Thai food as some of the best in the world. Apart from the delicious spicy food, a relaxing Thai massage is most wanted. Who can resist the glamour of Bangkok? A visit to the Grand Palace is an absolute must for anyone visiting Thailand’s capital city. This spectacular palace is undoubtedly the city’s most famous landmark. With a surge in mixed martial arts, I decided to try out Muay Thai in hopes of experiencing authentic Muay Thai training this evening. To my delight, I was not disappointed. The location is pretty convenient and the training facilities are clean and it even boasts a mini-museum detailing the history of Muay Thai on the lower level. They include bathing facilities and the training programme for beginners is really well-thought-out. The trainers were friendly and proficient at their job. They took me through the basics of Muay Thai, including striking, jabbing, crossing, hooking, footwork and push kicking. It’s really so much fun! I find that tuk-tuk, the 3-wheeled vehicle, is the most indigenous mode of transport in Bangkok. You should definitely take at least one ride on a tuk-tuk as it is quite a memorable experience that you won’t find back home in Kuala Lumpur. It is important to note that tuk-tuk is quite expensive than motorcycle taxi or songthaew as it is a popular mode of transport for tourists like us. The rates are usually anywhere from 100 to 300 Baht, and if you can brush up on your Thai, you are less likely to be ripped off by the tuk-tuk drivers. 55 English Form 2 Unit 6 My Blogspot Home | About | RSS | Archive Search Post title FANTASTIC PULAU REDANG Written by Vinicius Angusti Posted on 11 June, 11.11 p.m. Last weekend, my mates and I made a trip to Pulau Redang. We went there by bus. The journey took about 4 hours. It is the largest of a group of nine protected islands dotting the South China Sea, off the Terengganu coast. We choose Pulau Redang because of the island’s crystal clear waters. There is so much to do on and around Pulau Redang. Yesterday we rented kayaks and paddled out to sea. The sea changed its colour from turquoise to deep ocean blue. It was a lovely sight to behold. Remember to bring along lots of drinking water as you may get really thirsty. We also visited two historic shipwrecks: the H.M.S Prince of Wales and H.M.S Repulse. These two ships sank here at the start of the Second World War. This also marked the beginning of the Japanese occupation of Malaya in 1942. In the evening, we visited the Marine Park, where we could see fish in their natural habitat. Tour guides always brought along some biscuits and bread for these fish. However, we were told that young sharks and marine predators are not allowed to be fed as these sea creatures are wild and feeding them can change their eating habits. It was really dangerous to do so. This early morning, we went trekking. There is a relatively easy trek through a variety of lowland forests. We had so much fun here. Do apply lots of mosquito repellent on the back of your knees, shoulders, forehead and earlobes. Do walk as quietly as possible, or you will frighten wildlife off along the path. Do not wear colourful clothes. Earthly tones like brown will blend into the surroundings and increase your chance of spotting birds, mousedeer and monitor lizards. Wearing slip-ons or slippers is also not encouraged. The forest floor is intertwined with roots and vines and you may trip and fall. My trip with my mates to Pulau Redang was really the lovely one in my life. However, I’ve to be a bit honest and say the weather was really hot. I hope to visit the island again as I miss some of the activities there. Always remember, leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but pictures. (Suggested answer) PL CONTOH

Things to consider when planning a trip choose a guidebook or website go with an open mind check up on health requirements/ warnings plan on number of days research on places of interest/ destination make reservation for accommodation decide on transport MY BLOG Posted on 21 July, 5.31 p.m. HELPFUL TIPS FOR PLANNING A TRIP Travelling is an exciting activity that can broaden your horizons. You will learn so much from the people you meet, the things you see and experience. However, it is important to plan carefully. First, choose a guidebook or website that allows you to research into the destination, provides recommendations and offers real people reviews. Sites such as TripAdvisor and Backpackers forum, are very helpful for that. They can offer you suggestions, even if you have no idea where you would like to travel to, based on your likes and dislikes. The next thing to consider is transport. Different kinds of transport allows you a different experience and duration of travel. If you are in no rush, taking a train is fun and relaxing compared to taking a flight, where you will probably see less of journey but you will get to your destination a lot faster. That will play into your decision of how many days you wish to travel. A closer destination CONTOH

Download maps that will help you plan ahead as you research into accommodation, restaurants and landmarks you want to visit. Finally, find out if you need any shots prior to travel to certain countries and be aware of any health warnings that may adversely affect your ability to travel to the destination. With some good planning, your travel experience will be one to remember for the rest of your life. PL PAK-21 (Think-Pair-Share) 1 Work in pairs. Read the article below. Match exercises A – D to paragraphs 1 – 4. Can We Create Our Own Luck? Some people seem to be born lucky. They win the league championship, meet their perfect partners, achieve their ambitions and live happy lives. The British psychologist, Dr Richard Wiseman, has done a lot of research to discover why some people are luckier than others. After interviewing hundreds of people, he has concluded that people who think they are lucky achieve more success and happiness than those who don’t. Without realising it, they are creating good fortune in their lives. Using Dr Wiseman’s techniques, you too, can understand, control and increase your own good fortune. 1 Lucky people make the most of their opportunities. Be more open-minded to new experiences and vary your routine. For example, get off the bus a stop earlier than usual. You may see something interesting or new, or bump into an old mate. 2 Lucky people trust their instinct. When you are trying to decide what to do, first make an effort to relax. When your mind is clear, listen to what it is telling you and act on it. 3 Lucky people expect to be lucky. Convince yourself that your future will be bright and lucky. Set realistic but high goals. If you fail, don’t give up, and be open to the idea of trying a different way to achieve your goals. 4 Lucky people use bad luck to their advantage. If bad things happen, imagine how things could have been worse. You will realise that things are not so bad after all. Take a long view of things – even if things seem bad now, expect them to get better in the end. Learn from your past mistakes and think of new ways of solving your problems. Adapted from: https://elt.oup.com › scripts › elt › A If you are trying to decide between two options, write one of them down in the form of a letter. For example, if you are unhappy about a relationship, write to your partner explaining that it’s all over. Read the letter. Would you really like to send it, or is something telling you that it doesn’t feel right? If so, don’t do it. B Make a list of your goals. They must be specific and not vague. For example, I want to spend more time with my parents, not I want to be happy. Now make a second list of all the advantages you would get if you achieved your goals and the disadvantages. Compare the advantages with the disadvantages and you will see which goals are worth trying to achieve. C Make a list of six new experiences you would like to try. These could be simple, like eating at a new restaurant or learning a new language. Number the experiences 1 to 6. Then throw a dice and whatever experience is chosen, go out and do it. D When you experience bad luck, first cry or scream for 20 to 30 minutes. Then put your bad luck behind you. Don’t dwell on it for too long. Do something to make the situation better. For example, ask mates for advice and focus on a solution to the problem. PL C A B D Digital Resource 19 Digital Resource 18 CONTOH

67 English Form 2 Unit 7 PdPc Digital R esour ce Worksheet 2 You are going to read a passage about reasons why so many athletes have superstitions and rituals. We have all seen athletes performing ritual movements before the competition. Many of us have heard stories about the baseball player with his lucky socks, or the hockey player with his favourite stick. To some, it may seem silly and strange, but in sports, superstition and ritual are widespread and a fairly common practice. Many athletes believe that performing a specific ritual before competitions improves their performance and influences their success on the field. These rituals range from the clothes they wear to the food they eat, the warm-up they perform or even the music they listen to. A superstition arises when an athlete has a particularly good or bad performance and then tries to establish ‘cause-and-effect relationships’ by reviewing the facts of the day. They will notice things like what they ate or wore, and they’ll notice anything unusual that happened, such as getting a haircut, receiving a gift or hearing a certain song. If they have a great performance, they attribute their success to that unusual circumstance and attempt to recreate it before every competition. When you consider what it takes for an athlete to develop the skill and ability to excel at a given sport, it’s not hard to see how any ritual or superstition could develop. And really, what’s the difference between a ritual and a physical movement pattern? Learning any new skill, whether throwing a baseball, skiing down an icy mountain or learning to ride a bike, requires the development of new patterns of muscle contraction, agility and coordination. Because rituals often take on physical movement patterns, some could be created as a part of hours upon hours of physical practice. Perhaps the main difference between a ritual and a sports skill is that a ritual often happens prior to competition, so it may or may not directly affect the sport as it is being played. Still, in the big picture, the ritual does influence the belief system of the athlete, and this belief stays with the athlete during the game. Perhaps the real value in all athletic superstition and ritual is the boost of confidence and the sense of control that they provide an athlete. If you believe that doing a specific action or behaviour will make you perform better, then you probably will perform better. Many athletes use rituals, such as visualisation or guided imagery, to recreate a particularly successful race and experience the feelings they had then as though they are happening now. I played in a football match last weekend. It’s so different between playing with your mates and playing competitively. This was my first time playing in the football match. Last weekend, it was an away match. I remembered my coach coming up to me and said, ‘Are you nervous?’ I replied, ‘No.’ I wasn’t nervous and I was ready to play the game. My teammates and I wore our jerseys; I was born on 9th December and hence I sported that number on my jersey. I also put on my knee-length woolly socks for my good luck. My experience and knowledge of the football game wasn’t that great, but I was athletic and a hard worker. My coach had prepared us for the match months ahead, and we had run and practised for hundreds of hours, and now the match was upon us. My first game was a hard battle. We played under the lights and the spectators were going crazy. It was the perfect recipe for a good game. I could feel the excitement in the air as soon as I walked on the grassy field. During the second half of the game, a couple of our players got injured. Nevertheless, we managed to pull out a win! The final score was 2 – 1 and I was proud of how my team played. I was happy we put a smile on my coach’s face too. The exciting cheers and rapturous applause from the enthusiastic CONTOH

My team advanced to the semifinal, which would take place two weeks later. You know it was great to have a win like that for your first game. My teammates thought that I had a good game. When I got home, my family congratulated me. I felt really good that night. Even though I didn’t score a goal, I still think it was an amazing experience! After that game, I think football changed me. I’m a really confident person now. Hope you’re having a great weekend. Bye for now. Hugs Carter, xx PL Worksheet 2 Read the email from your pen pal, Grayson. New Message Hi, A lot of us have superstitions. Superstitions vary from culture to culture over the world. Let’s take a look at some of the most common ones to find out how they got started in the first place. Smash! No one wants to hear the sound of a mirror breaking into a hundred pieces. It is thought that a broken mirror leads to seven unlucky years for the person who did the damage. This superstition is believed to have originated among the Romans, who were the first to create glass mirrors. Horseshoes are believed to be a lucky charm in many cultures. This is likely because they were once made from iron. In ancient times, iron was considered a magical metal since it could withstand fire. Many thought this gave iron horseshoes mystical powers and the ability to ward off bad luck. To bring good fortune to a family, a horseshoe was often nailed above the entrance to a home. Some believed that horseshoes should point upwards like a ‘U’ to collect good luck and prevent it from escaping, but others thought it should face down. That way, good luck could pour onto those who walked under it. Funny isn’t it? Have you heard of, or do you believe in – any of these? Grayson Reply Forward Discard Digital Resource 21 CONTOH

Don’t give clocks as presents. Don’t let the ends of the broom touch your feet. Finish every grain of rice on your plate. Young women shouldn’t sit on the house steps. Don’t sing in the kitchen while cooking. Jungle etiquette: Ask for forgiveness before relieving yourself and don’t use your real names. Don’t point at the moon. Don’t step over people when they are lying down. Don’t sleep facing the mirror. Don’t open umbrella indoors. Wash your feet and hands when you come home. Don’t change places while you are eating. New Message To : [email protected] From : [email protected] Subject : Superstitions I Grew Up Hearing Hi Grayson, Wow! Regardless of the way it started, the notion that breaking a mirror brings bad luck is prevalent in cultures around the world, ranging from Romans and British to Malaysians. Whether you subscribe to the superstition or not, breaking a mirror is bad news – if only because of the mess it creates. Every country has its fair share of superstitions and Malaysia is no different. There’s a common saying among the elder generation – having the broom brush over your feet is supposed to be bad luck. We believe this is because brooms are used to sweep dirt and messes, so you don’t really want to come into contact with this ‘unclean energy’. If horror of horrors, you should feel the brush of bristles against your toes, a supposed remedy is to spit on the broom. There are many superstitions over what to do and what not to do in the jungle. We are advised to ask for forgiveness before relieving ourselves. It’s said to be disrespectful to the jungle spirits if you don’t. If you think about it, you’re basically soiling their home, so at the least you can do is to say sorry. My grandma also reminded me not to use my real name while trekking in the jungle. This is to prevent spirits from impersonating your friends to yell out your name and lure you deeper into the jungle by making you think you’re answering their call. Whenever you are in the forest, you are usually given a nickname as you should not call out to each other using real names. Also, no ghost stories when spending a night or two in the jungle. You would not want to offend the supernatural beings by making up silly stories or laughing at them. CONTOH

71 English Form 2 Unit 7 PdPc PAK-21 Activity New Message My mum once told me that never to sit on the house steps. This harks back to a time when everyone lived in wooden houses on stilts in the countryside. Young, unmarried women were told that if they were seen sitting on the steps, they’d never get married. For me, the true reason behind the myth is simple. Sitting on the house steps gave an impression of laziness, as society back then believed that the women should be in the kitchen cooking, cleaning or doing other household chores around the house instead of being idle, which was seen as undesirable. Every culture is bound to have at least a few superstitions. In Malaysia, where we are known for our ethnic and cultural diversity, we have certainly got no shortage of urban legends and scary stories passed down by our parents and peers. Whether we practise these superstitious beliefs, it is fascinating to delve into it to further understand and respect the different cultures in the country. Cheerio.
