Studies have shown that your smartphone is dirtier than a public toilet. If you are not cleaning it regularly with an alcohol (10)(swap , swab) and it (11)(rubs , wraps) against your face, you may be transferring that dirt to the skin, which combined with friction, may promote breakouts. Plastering a smartphone to your (12)(cheek , chick) for minutes on end could lead to not only occlusion of the pores, but also infection and then acne. Even if you are (13)(steadfast , stayfast) in your nighttime face-washing ritual, not changing your pillowcase on a regular basis can result in breakouts. When you don’t (14)(rifresh , refresh) your pillowcase about every three days, dirt and oil build up. When you put your face into the pillow at night, these blemish-causing substances can (15)(clog , cloak) your pores. The type of pillowcase doesn’t matter much when it comes to the transfer of dirt and oil, but one of the ways that dermatologists wake up with younger-looking skin is by sleeping on soft, less abrasive pillowcases. 76 English Form 2 Unit 8 Causes of Stress Among Students Bullying • Students who are being bullied feel inferior and insecure • Perpetrators of bullying – face pressure themselves – emotional problems that lead to bullying behaviour Peer Pressure • Fitting in with friends • Taking part in questionable activities with friends Examinations • Good students – pressure to excel by parents, teachers – emphasis on distinction – obtain scholarships • Weak students – pressure of coping with schoolwork Eliminate Stress • Seek help from counsellor and trusted adults • Take time off to unwind and rest • Spend time with cheerful people • Make time for leisure activities • Think positive (Suggested response) Nolan : Feeling like there are too many pressures on you? You’re not alone. I believe everyone experiences stress at times. So what are the main causes of stress among us? Rita : I’d say it’s examinations. The predicament is felt by most of the students, whether they are good students or weak ones. Ellie : I can’t agree with you more. Good students feel burdened with the expectations heaped upon them by parents and teachers. With the current emphasis placed on distinction as the only means of obtaining scholarships, good students have to achieve near-perfect scores in order to be considered for these scholarships. Rita : Weak students face the pressure of coping with their schoolwork and passing examinations. They need to put in extra hours of work and attend tuition classes just to get by in school. I believe the fear of failing is a major cause of stress among these students as their future depends on how they perform in examinations. Austin : I’d say bullying is also the major cause of stress faced by students nowadays. Students who are susceptible to bullying, teasing and threats feel inferior and insecure. They are too afraid to complain as they fear the repercussions more than the humiliation of being bullied. Nolan : The perpetrators of the bullying somehow also experience stress as they might be experiencing emotional problems that lead to the bullying behaviour. Ellie : Peer pressure is another cause of stress. Students have to deal with issues, such as fitting in with their friends and keeping up with the latest trends. Some of my friends in another school feel pressured into partaking in questionable activities, which their friends are involved in. This can be conflicting for many who are aware of what is right and what is wrong. Nolan : Another source of stress is problems faced at home. Many students come from homes where there is little or no communication between parents and children. Thus, they are left with little guidance and can easily go astray. Divorce, separation and financial constraints are all causes for stress at home. Ellie : I agree with you. Austin : I also agree. Rita : So how can students eliminate stress in their life? Nolan : It’s easier said than done. But I’d suggest them to seek the help of the school counsellor or trusted adults. Never turn to unhealthy solutions such as drugs, cigarettes and alcohol, which only provide temporary solutions and eventually lead to a higher level of stress. Rita : When students find themselves in stressful situations, they should take some time off to rest and unwind. They can make time for leisure activities that they enjoy. Ellie : They should spend some time in the company of cheerful and positive-minded people. Austin : They should also think positive and tell themselves that things are bound to improve in the future. Nolan : I guess that’s all for our discussion today. Then, write a suitable title for each tip. HOW TO BE SAFE ONLINE Tip 1 Always make sure you have antivirus software installed on your computer or laptop. It is better to get the original software rather than download one from the internet. Tip 2 Never post any of your personal information, such as your name, birthday, home address, email address or mobile number publicly online. Just one piece of personal information can be used by cyber criminals to find out even more. Tip 3 It is advisable to use a nickname instead of your real name, especially if you are signing up to social websites like Twitter and many others. Tip 4 Remember to only connect with people you know. Do not simply add any strangers, especially in your Facebook account. Always bear in mind that there are many people out there creating fake online profiles. Tip 5 Use the privacy and security settings on social media sites so that only your friends and family members can see your pages. Remind and encourage them to tighten their privacy settings too, as they could affect you. Even if your account is locked as private, personal information you have shared with others could still be accessed through their pages. Tip 6 People always like sharing photos and videos on social media sites. Do avoid photos of your home, work, school or places you frequent. Remember that once you have posted a picture of yourself online, other people may be able to see it and download it. You may be surprised to see it going viral one day! Tip 7 This is especially true when you give out information when you are filling in forms online, or registering with a website, or signing up for an online service. Be very careful. Just provide the minimum information possible. Tip 8 There are many social websites out there. Always choose one that you are familiar with. You don’t need to have too many accounts lest you cannot manage. Write the titles in the boxes below. Tip 1 Use antivirus software. Tip 2 Guard your personal information. Tip 3 Use a nickname. Abbey Hi Aaliyah, The haze season is back again! What did you do during the hazy days to protect yourself? As for me, I just try to stay indoors as much as possible, and keep the windows and doors closed. At the same time, I switch on the air conditioner and use air purifiers to remove dust particles and contaminants in the air. I also avoid exercising in the open as aerobic activities make me breathe deeply. Hence, I’ll suck in more pollutants deep into my lungs. What about you? Share with me. Take care. PL Hi Abbey, Every morning for the past few weeks, I’ve been throwing open my curtains and cussing at the endless white. As for me, I drink plenty of water to flush out the toxins absorbed through the skin and lungs. Plain water is always the best. Remember to boil your tap water. The recommended intake is eight glasses of water daily. If you feel that your throat is dry or sore, increase the intake of water. Another way I’m taking to battle the haze is to eat lots of fruit and vegetables. Eating more fruit and vegetables rich in vitamins A and C can boost your immune system, and help protect your eyes, lungs and the oxygen-carrying capabilities of your bloodstream. Foods rich in vitamin A include carrots, sweet potatoes and spinach, while foods rich in vitamin C are oranges, kiwis and broccoli. I’m also wearing a face mask whenever I’m going outdoors. Face masks, such as N95 masks, are designed to keep out fine particles and hence, protect us from breathing in the smoke particles in the air. The mask should be changed when it gets soiled or distorted in shape. That’s all. Take care. Aaliyah Type a message Digital Resource 24 CONTOH
79 English Form 2 Unit 8 PdPc Digital R esour ce Worksheet 2 Read the instant message from your friend, Jarrett. Jarrett Hi Darius, I think every person should have basic knowledge about first aid. We never know when accidents can happen and it could mean the difference between life and death. For example, if your little brother is choking on something he had mistakenly swallowed, then knowing that giving him up to five blows between the shoulder blades with the heel of your hand could dislodge the object might save his life. Or simply knowing that during sports day, getting your friend who is suffering from heat exhaustion to a cooler spot to lower his body temperature is important. Providing cool, nonalcoholic and non-caffeinated beverages as long as the person is alert, is also a good step to take. There is bound to be many other instances in our life that knowing first aid will be beneficial to us. Let me know what you think. Write an instant message to Jarrett giving your opinions. PL Hi Jarrett, First-aid knowledge is definitely invaluable for us. It enables us to assist the persons who become injured in the event of an accident or emergency until help arrives. First-aid skills can be applied in the home, the workplace or any public locations. When someone catches fire, stop burning immediately by putting out the fire, or stop the person’s contact with hot liquid, steam or other material. You may need to help the person ‘stop, drop and roll’ to smother any flames. Remember to remove smouldering, hot or burnt material from the person, and take off jewellery, belts and tight clothing as burns can swell quickly. In the case of burns that affect only the top layer of the skin, cool the burn by holding the burnt skin under cool (not cold) running water, or immerse in cool water until pain subsides. Protect the burn with a sterile, non-adhesive bandage or clean cloth, and do not apply butter or ointment, which can cause infection. Seek medical help if needed. Besides, most reactions to insect bites and stings are mild, causing little more than redness, itching, stinging or minor swelling. If needed, remove the stinger. You may do so by scraping the area with a fingernail or use tweezers to remove it. Remember do not pinch the sting as that can inject more venom. In order to control any swelling that might occur, elevate the area that has been stung. Apply a cool compress and use a cloth dampened with cold water or filled with ice. This helps reduce pain and swelling. I hope these help. Darius Type a message Digital Resource 25 CONTOH

There are lots of easy and fun ways to make Earth Day every day. Old habits die hard. But again, with practice, you can do a number of things to help the environment by shifting the way you use energy at home. Turn off the lights when you leave a room. Ditch the incandescent light bulbs, which waste 90 percent of their energy as heat and switch to LED bulbs. Unplug your electronic devices whenever you can, too. Got even a little bit of space in your yard or do you have a patio? Consider planting a tree in the ground or in a planter. A tree can help clean the air around us, as well as provide essential food to bees, birds and other species, and cool the temperature of the area that surrounds us. Basically, it offers multiple powerful services to help protect the environment all in one beautiful package. It’s never too late to embrace recycling or to get better at accomplishing what should be a simple and by now secondnature action on all our parts. Paper, cardboard, glass, plastic and certain metals can all be saved from the landfill and pumped back into the economy in almost every community in the country. In fact, you can recycle almost anything. To many, a hot shower is one of life’s small pleasures, but it’s also a major carbon emission culprit. The average showerhead produces 2.5 gallons of water per minute and water heaters work hard to heat up all the H2 O. As a result, hot showers generate a quarter pound of carbon each minute. If we all decided to cut our clean routines by just one minute each day, we could save a shocking 20.9 billion pounds of carbon emissions each year. Once again, I crave your blessings and of Mum’s too. Please convey my regards to Mum. May I tell you that I would be saving RM50 out of this amount to purchase a nice pen, which I had only seen it yesterday at a shop and had very much liked it. This would remain with me as a valued gift for my examinations in which I’ll use this. I wish I could really do well at the examinations to pay due honour to this gift from you. I’m studying hard and all my arrangements in the hostel are fine. Worksheet 2 (Suggested answer) How to Motivate Yourself in Times of Failure I don’t like failure, and I can assume that you don’t like either. Sometimes what we believe in fails, our hopes shatter and we feel miserable. Not only is failure painful and humiliating, it usually means that the return on our effort, time and money is zero. We then start to think our lives are useless and there isn’t anything to live for. So how can we prevail in times of failure? Always remember that there is no success without failure. If you want to succeed in anything, you need to remind yourself that you will fail several times before getting to that point. Keep this at the forefront of your mind each time you hit an obstacle or fail completely. Tell yourself that failure is a delay, not defeat. It is actually a temporary detour, not a dead end. Next, always stay positive. When you fail, you need to make a conscious decision to be positive rather than miserable. If you choose to be miserable, it will be much harder to get back from your failure. However, if you create a positive mindset, you can move on from each failure without losing your enthusiasm and drive. A positive mindset will lead to positive results, while a negative mindset will lead to negative results. So don’t give up on your hopes and dreams, and do not blame others for your failure. Look at other ways of achieving your dreams. Change your aims if you have to. And be sure to surround yourself with positive-minded people. Remember, do not dwell on your mistakes for too long, but accept them. When you fail, your natural instinct will beat yourself up. However, dwelling on your failures and blaming yourself for your mistakes are going to drain your energy. Instead, you need to accept that mistakes. Once you accept this, you can focus on shaping your success. You build on your failure and you use it as a stepping stone. I’m not saying that you need to forget your mistakes, but you don’t dwell on it. You don’t let it have your energy or any of your time or space. From my point of view, when you mess things up, don’t get stuck in a pit of failure, but continue pressing forward. What you need to do is dust yourself off and press forward. By pressing forward regardless of the obstacles, you have the chance to make progress. You can’t change what has happened, but you can try again, and this time will be better than the last. Last but not least, you need to get yourself organised after you have failed. By creating a plan for your future based on what you have learnt from your mistakes, you can take back control of your situation. This puts you in a better position to succeed, as you know where you are heading to and how to get there. Besides that, you are always not alone. Get help and advice from others. You will lose nothing by talking to them. You will also need support and help at some point. The truth is that failure is never the end of the road. It is simply an indicator that there are some parts of yourself and your life that you need to put more effort into in order to get the results that you desire. So get up from your failures and rise above them. Take the first step forward and you will be all right! Contributed by, Maisie CONTOH

Let me give you some suggestions and advice. Hope they are useful to you. You know I care a lot for your wellbeing. Sis, it helps to be more conscious of what you are eating these days. The food you eat determines the state of your health. Always remember that if you eat well, you will be healthy; if you eat everything that comes your way, chances are you will fall ill easily. This is why you should always eat fresh fruit and vegetables. Do not overload with your favourite chips and chocolates! You know I love chocolates too, and maybe a little bite might be OK once in a while. And it is equally important to ensure that all three meals − breakfast, lunch and dinner, are balanced. It is no wonder people believe that you have to eat breakfast like a king, have lunch like a prince and have dinner like a pauper! And remember after dinner rest a while, after supper walk a mile! Eating a lot of fast food and fried foods is detrimental to your health. They contain too much salt, sugar, preservatives and artifical flavourings. We tend to put on too much weight and develop other health problems. Always take everything in moderation. In addition, water is essential to good health too, so drink plenty of water every day. I make time for exercise and my hobbies. I go for a jog almost every evening, play badminton over the weekend with Huda and Eliana, and still enjoy my reading. What about you, sis? But I think one of the most important inventions with the greatest impact on human life is the computer. At present, you can see computers being used everywhere. Embedded computers are also found in many devices, from the MP3 player to fighter aircraft, and from toy to industrial robot. Initially, computers were very big and occupied a room. They were used for special purposes and did not work very fast. As time passed, computers evolved and got faster and smaller, until the personal computer (PC) was invented, which led to a vast revolution in human life. With the coming of computers to our home, we can perform many tasks that were far-fetched before. We can buy and sell things, chat with friends and manage businesses from the home. Travel has become easier too. You can book your air tickets and select your hotel. Indeed, you can evaluate hotel facilities and even see the inside of hotel rooms before booking it with just one click. Computers can do numerous mathematical calculations with incredible speed and great accuracy. For example, a person can simultaneously execute more than one task, thereby increasing productivity and reducing human errors. This shows how human involvement is minimised by just supplying data to the computer for evaluation and getting results in a fraction of seconds. Thus, I can say that the computer is one of the most outstanding innovations of the last century. Next, computers can store large amounts of information and a user can retrieve it later for further processing. For instance, trend analysis and forecasting in a company are done by referring to historical data. These examples illustrate the usefulness of computers for measuring the success of a company. From this, we know that computers have contributed significantly to the world’s economy. Finally, there are many uses of computer in different fields of work. Engineers, architects and filmmakers all use computers to design things. Teachers, writers and most office workers use computers for research, word processing and emailing. Hospitals and government departments require it. Small businesses can use it as a point of sale and for general record keeping. Therefore, the computer is definitely the best invention in the last 100 years, considering its presence in almost every field, and its usefulness. Let’s hope that new software and hardware will keep on making the computer better as life without it is unimaginable now. Worksheet 2 1 Do you remember the time when the favourite theme of science fiction was face transplants? But these transplants are not elusive anymore. Face is the most important anatomy of the human body, so when disfigurement occurs due to burns, accidents or diseases, it is very traumatising emotionally. Partial face transplant was carried out first in France in 2005. Then, the full replacement of a person’s face was carried out by 30 surgeons in Spain in 2010. What an achievement! 2 Healthy tissue damage was one of the greatest concerns of cancer treatment. Earlier treating breast cancer meant removal of the whole breast and lymph nodes. But today, molecularly targeted therapy has made it possible to attack only the cancer cells, thus arresting the growth of tumour, while leaving the healthy cells intact. What then will be the outcome of this therapy? Doctors claim that through targeted therapy, it is possible in the near future to reverse the malignant mutations of the cells. Worksheet 2 (Suggested response) Student A : Chloe, you’re looking pale! Are you feeling unwell? Student B : Not really, Rini. I just came back from my hometown, Alor Setar. Along my journey back home, I felt of being ill and vomited thrice. I think it was car sickness that caused me to vomit. Student A : Car sickness is actually a type of motion sickness. Motion sickness occurs when the brain receives conflicting information from our inner ears, eyes and nerves in the joints and muscles. You’re sitting low in the back seat of a car without being able to look out the window, or you’re reading a book in the car. Your inner ear will sense motion, but your eyes and body won’t. So the result might be an upset stomach, cold sweat, fatigue, loss of appetite or vomiting. It usually slows down as soon as the motion stops. So the more you travel, the more easily you’ll adjust to being in motion. Student B : Do you mean that motion sickness is caused by repeated movements when travelling, like going over bumps in a car or moving up and down in a boat? And the inner ear sends different signals to our brain from those our eyes are seeing. These confusing messages cause us to feel unwell? Student A : Yes, exactly. Student B : What should I do to prevent car sickness? Student A : First, you should focus on the horizon, or a distant, stationary object. Don’t read while travelling or use electronic devices. Try to look at things outside the car rather than focusing on books, games or films. Keep your head still while resting against a seat back. Well, taking naps during travelling might help. Student B : My mum said a ginger supplement combined with ginger snaps, ginger ale or candied ginger might help curb nausea. Is it true? Student A : Yes. Ginger supplements reportedly provide some relief from nausea associated with motion sickness. You can really try them. Some people also find that nibbling on plain crackers and sipping cold water or a carbonated drink without caffeine help. Student B : Okay, thanks for telling me all these. I’ll try them out. Student A : Adequate air ventilation might help prevent car sickness too. Try to keep the air clear of any strong odours. Student B : Noted. How to avoid motion sickness when travelling by train, ship and plane? Any ideas? Student A : Well, you can actually plan ahead. When travelling, avoid sitting in seats in the rear of the vehicle or seats that face backwards. Pick your seat where you’ll feel motion least. If you’re travelling by train, take a forward-facing seat near the front and next to a window. If you’re travelling by plane, ask for a seat over the front edge of a wing. Once aboard, direct the air vent flow to your face. If you’re travelling by ship, request a cabin in the front or middle of the ship near the water level. Student B : Thanks for all these helpful pointers. Hope they can ease my motion sickness gradually. Student A : No problem. Bangkok is a wonderful metropolitan, featuring Buddhist temples, floating markets, colourful night markets, street foods and glitzy shopping malls. Along with a fascinating history and a unique culture that includes delectable Thai seafood delicacies. Many visitors regard Thai food as some of the best in the world. Apart from the delicious spicy food, a relaxing Thai massage is most wanted. Who can resist the glamour of Bangkok? Yesterday, we took a boat trip along the Chao Phraya River and visited the Temple of Dawn, along with many other temples and landmarks. We took a dinner cruise along the Chao Phraya River in the evening and soaked ourselves in the spectacular sights of Bangkok. We also visited the Grand Palace. A visit to the Grand Palace is an absolute must for anyone visiting Thailand’s capital city. This spectacular palace is undoubtedly the city’s most famous landmark. With a surge in mixed martial arts, I decided to try out Muay Thai in hopes of experiencing authentic Muay Thai training this evening. To my delight, I was not disappointed. The location is pretty convenient and the training facilities are clean and it even boasts a mini-museum detailing the history of Muay Thai on the lower level. They include bathing facilities and the training programme for beginners is really well-thought-out. The trainers were friendly and proficient at their job. They took me through the basics of Muay Thai, including striking, jabbing, crossing, hooking, footwork and push kicking. It’s really so much fun! I find that tuk-tuk, the 3-wheeled vehicle, is the most indigenous mode of transport in Bangkok. You should definitely take at least one ride on a tuk-tuk as it is quite a memorable experience that you won’t find back home in Kuala Lumpur. It is important to note that tuk-tuk is quite expensive than motorcycle taxi or songthaew as it is a popular mode of transport for tourists like us. The rates are usually anywhere from 100 to 300 Baht, and if you can brush up on your Thai, you are less likely to be ripped off by the tuk-tuk drivers. Worksheet 2 (Suggested answer) Post title : FANTASTIC PULAU REDANG Written by : Vinicius Angusti Posted on : 11 June, 11.11 p.m. Last weekend, my mates and I made a trip to Pulau Redang. We went there by bus. The journey took about 4 hours. It is the largest of a group of nine protected islands dotting the South China Sea, off the Terengganu coast. We choose Pulau Redang because of the island’s crystal clear waters. There is so much to do on and around Pulau Redang. Yesterday we rented kayaks and paddled out to sea. The sea changed its colour from turquoise to deep ocean blue. It was a lovely sight to behold. Remember to bring along lots of drinking water as you may get really thirsty. We also visited two historic shipwrecks: the H.M.S Prince of Wales and H.M.S Repulse. These two ships sank here at the start of the Second World War. This also marked the beginning of the Japanese occupation of Malaya in 1942. In the evening, we visited the Marine Park, where we could see fish in their natural habitat. Tour guides always brought along some biscuits and bread for these fish. However, we were told that young sharks and marine predators are not allowed to be fed as these sea creatures are wild and feeding them can change their eating habits. It was really dangerous to do so. This early morning, we went trekking. There is a relatively easy trek through a variety of lowland forests. We had so much fun here. Do apply lots of mosquito repellent on the back of your knees, shoulders, forehead and earlobes. Do walk as quietly as possible, or you will frighten wildlife off along the path. Do not wear colourful clothes. Earthly tones like brown will blend into the surroundings and increase your chance of spotting birds, mousedeer and monitor lizards. Wearing slip-ons or slippers is also not encouraged. The forest floor is intertwined with roots and vines and you may trip and fall. My trip with my mates to Pulau Redang was really the lovely one in my life. However, I’ve to be a bit honest and say the weather was really hot. I hope to visit the island again as I miss some of the activities there. Always remember, leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but pictures. Worksheet 3 MY BLOG Posted on 21 July, 5.31 p.m. HELPFUL TIPS FOR PLANNING A TRIP Travelling is an exciting activity that can broaden your horizons. You will learn so much from the people you meet, the things you see and experience. However, it is important to plan carefully. First, choose a guidebook or website that allows you to research into the destination, provides recommendations and offers real people reviews. Sites such as TripAdvisor and Backpackers forum, are very helpful for that. They can offer you suggestions, even if you have no idea where you would like to travel to, based on your likes and dislikes. The next thing to consider is transport. Different kinds of transport allows you a different experience and duration of travel. If you are in no rush, taking a train is fun and relaxing compared to taking a flight, where you will probably see less of journey but you will get to your destination a lot faster. That will play into your decision of how many days you wish to travel. A closer destination allows you more days to spend at your set destination compared to a country where the flight itself will take more than 24 hours. Depending on the dates you travel, look up area events, celebrations and holidays that occur during your stay. And if you do not want to attend the event, find out accommodation availability as well as how to avoid traffic and crowds. Download maps that will help you plan ahead as you research into accommodation, restaurants and landmarks you want to visit. CONTOH
English Form 2 Answers A10 Finally, find out if you need any shots prior to travel to certain countries and be aware of any health warnings that may adversely affect your ability to travel to the destination. With some good planning, your travel experience will be one to remember for the rest of your life. English Form 2 Answers A11 SOW: Lesson 74 Writing Worksheet 1 To : [email protected] From : [email protected] Subject: My First Experience Playing In A Football Match Hi Baddrol, What are you up to? I played in a football match last weekend. It’s so different between playing with your mates and playing competitively. This was my first time playing in the football match. Last weekend, it was an away match. I remembered my coach coming up to me and said, ‘Are you nervous?’ I replied, ‘No.’ I wasn’t nervous and I was ready to play the game. My teammates and I wore our jerseys; I was born on 9th December and hence I sported that number on my jersey. I also put on my knee-length woolly socks for my good luck. My experience and knowledge of the football game wasn’t that great, but I was athletic and a hard worker. My coach had prepared us for the match months ahead, and we had run and practised for hundreds of hours, and now the match was upon us. My first game was a hard battle. We played under the lights and the spectators were going crazy. It was the perfect recipe for a good game. I could feel the excitement in the air as soon as I walked on the grassy field. During the second half of the game, a couple of our players got injured. Nevertheless, we managed to pull out a win! The final score was 2 – 1 and I was proud of how my team played. I was happy we put a smile on my coach’s face too. The exciting cheers and rapturous applause from the enthusiastic spectators after our winning made the whole experience fantastic! I personally played a good game too, but in the beginning, I admitted I was nervous. My team advanced to the semifinal, which would take place two weeks later. You know it was great to have a win like that for your first game. My teammates thought that I had a good game. When I got home, my family congratulated me. I felt really good that night. Even though I didn’t score a goal, I still think it was an amazing experience! After that game, I think football changed me. I’m a really confident person now. Hope you’re having a great weekend. Bye for now. Hugs Carter, xx Worksheet 2 To : [email protected] From : [email protected] Subject : Superstitions I Grew Up Hearing Hi Grayson, Wow! Regardless of the way it started, the notion that breaking a mirror brings bad luck is prevalent in cultures around the world, ranging from Romans and British to Malaysians. Whether you subscribe to the superstition or not, breaking a mirror is bad news – if only because of the mess it creates. Every country has its fair share of superstitions and Malaysia is no different. There’s a common saying among the elder generation – having the broom brush over your feet is supposed to be bad luck. We believe this is because brooms are used to sweep dirt and messes, so you don’t really want to come into contact with this ‘unclean energy’. If horror of horrors, you should feel the brush of bristles against your toes, a supposed remedy is to spit on the broom. There are many superstitions over what to do and what not to do in the jungle. We are advised to ask for forgiveness before relieving ourselves. It’s said to be disrespectful to the jungle spirits if you don’t. If you think about it, you’re basically soiling their home, so at the least you can do is to say sorry. My grandma also reminded me not to use my real name while trekking in the jungle. This is to prevent spirits from impersonating your friends to yell out your name and lure you deeper into the jungle by making you think you’re answering their call. Whenever you are in the forest, you are usually given a nickname as you should not call out to each other using real names. Also, no ghost stories when spending a night or two in the jungle. You would not want to offend the supernatural beings by making up silly stories or laughing at them. My mum once told me that never to sit on the house steps. This harks back to a time when everyone lived in wooden houses on stilts in the countryside. Young, unmarried women were told that if they were seen sitting on the steps, they’d never get married. For me, the true reason behind the myth is simple. Sitting on the house steps gave an impression of laziness, as society back then believed that the women should be in the kitchen cooking, cleaning or doing other household chores around the house instead of being idle, which was seen as undesirable. Every culture is bound to have at least a few superstitions. In Malaysia, where we are known for our ethnic and cultural diversity, we have certainly got no shortage of urban legends and scary stories passed down by our parents and peers. Whether we practise these superstitious beliefs, it is fascinating to delve into it to further understand and respect the different cultures in the country. Cheerio. SOW: Lesson 94 Speaking Worksheet 1 (Suggested response) Nolan : Feeling like there are too many pressures on you? You’re not alone. I believe everyone experiences stress at times. So what are the main causes of stress among us? Rita : I’d say it’s examinations. The predicament is felt by most of the students, whether they are good students or weak ones. Ellie : I can’t agree with you more. Good students feel burdened with the expectations heaped upon them by parents and teachers. With the current emphasis placed on distinction as the only means of obtaining scholarships, good students have to achieve nearperfect scores in order to be considered for these scholarships. SOW: Lessons 95 - 96 Reading Worksheet 1 Tip 1 : Use antivirus software. Tip 2 : Guard your personal information. Tip 3 : Use a nickname. SOW: Lesson 103 Writing Worksheet 1 Hi Abbey, Every morning for the past few weeks, I’ve been throwing open my curtains and cussing at the endless white. That’s all. Take care. Aaliyah CONTOH
English Form 2 Answers A13 Worksheet 2 Hi Jarrett, First-aid knowledge is definitely invaluable for us.
