JANUARY 2022: ALL THE NEWS THAT MATTERS HISTORY REPEATS

STORY JACK HOULIHAN IT’S been a mammoth year for classic car
auctions, and Shannons offered some truly
historic metal in November as part of its massive
40th-anniversary online auction. The original
GTHO Phase III Falcon that headlined the auction
was the same car that originally set the tone
for GTHO prices way back in 2007, when it was
bought at auction by the late Darryl Mattingley
for $683,650. Darryl also had the first and last
CV8 Monaros ever built in his collection, which,
like the GTHO, are super-low milers and were
also included in the Shannons auction. The first
Monaro sold for $130K and the last for $230K, and
while the GTHO’s final sale figure is undisclosed,
we do know bidding surpassed $930K before the
hammer fell, showing the market is not slowing
down anytime soon.

GARRY JOHNSTONE

PART two of our look into the hot-car 245, column auto and knee-freezer air con. We and doing a closed-door respray in the original

04: ANOTHER great car from Garry’s past was this 5 3

L31 308/M21 four-speed yellow VK chaser. The
guy that owned it was a Mackay local, but the car 7
itself was a 20-hour return trip from home. Never
one to shy away from a road trip adventure, Garry 017STREET MACHINE
hooked up the car trailer and off he went. “I pretty
much bought this car sight-unseen,” he says. “The
seller assured me it was clean and he seemed
like a decent bloke. I was very happily surprised
when I saw the VK in the flesh; it was such a good,
clean example. The original engine block was
gone, having been replaced with a red 308 from
a Torana, but the proper intake manifold, B-cast
heads and baffled sump were all still fitted. The
body was mint, too, and it still had all the tell-tale
BT1 trinkets like the ashtrays in the front armrests,
door pockets and fine-increment speedo. What an
awesome car.”

05: HERE’S one Garry definitely regrets selling.

“I bought this XY GT replica from a very talented
‘backyarder’ in western Queensland. This guy was
as handy as a little saucepan; he did the body,
paint, built the engine – you name it. It drove so
well – a mild 351 Cleveland, super-smooth T5
from a 90s XR8, and, of course, a nine-inch diff.
I don’t ever remember owning a car that turned
more heads than this one. I’d pull up at traffic
lights and people would wind down their windows
just to listen to it, or they’d be hanging out of their
cars taking pictures. It wasn’t a show car; it was
even better than that – an awesome daily driver!
This XY was perfect, and I have no doubt that the
hindsight of already selling it will come back and
sting me in the arse.”

06: NOTHING screams period Australian street

machine like a red EH ute rolling on Dragway
Indys. “Wow, what a car this was,” Garry says.
“A 202 six-cylinder stroked to 235 cubes using
a Falcon crank, big camshaft, triple Solex carbs,
a T5 manual and narrowed One Tonner Salisbury
diff. It was a really cool 90s-spec EH ute that made
200rwhp at 6800rpm. It was advertised locally but
situated a few hours west of Mackay. The guy had
a pretty big number on it – for that time, anyway –
which I guess scared a few people off. It was for
sale for ages, but eventually it got to a point where
I could afford it. I owned it for a few years and then
sold it on. I’m fairly sure it’s still in town.”

07: GARRY has been lucky to own quite a few

HK Monaros over the years. “This one was the
only base-model, non-GTS Monaro I ever had,
and it was also the last one I owned,” he says.
“I’d placed a wanted ad in the local newspaper
looking for an old Holden project. It was Saturday
morning and I was taking the kids to their weekly
netball and football commitments when the phone
rang: “Hi mate, I’ve got this HK Monaro I want to
get rid of; you interested?” I looked at it that day,
then rang my wife Pam and said to her: “I’m not
sure how we’re going to do it, but we’re buying
this thing.” Performance-wise, it was nothing to
rave about – just a trusty old 186 and Powerglide

– but I loved it.” s

> LETTER OF THE MONTH

TAKING ISSUE

OHHHH, Broads. What have you done? You’ve thrown a spanner
in the works with your editorial in the 400th issue (SM, Dec ’21).
You yourself said: “Exactly which issue of the magazine marks our
400th is somewhat contentious, as SM evolved from Van Wheels
magazine.”

So, keeping that in mind, the Australian Van Wheels & Street
Machine issue with John Strachan’s Alley Cat on the cover (top
right) has always been considered the first issue of SM by collectors
of the magazine, because it was the first issue with Street Machine
printed on the cover, regardless of it coming after the Van Wheels
name.

If you count the number of published magazines that feature the
month and year on them, with that Aug-Sep 1981 issue being #1,
then the December 2021 issue is indeed #400. However, if you
are counting the Oct-Nov 1981 issue – the first issue where the
Street Machine name is given prominence over Van Wheels – as
#1 (bottom right), then the January 2021 issue should have been
the 400th issue.

I am not including the final issues of 2020 or 2021, as they
simply have ‘Yearbook’ printed on them. I call those Street Machine
specials – exactly the same as the six issues titled The Very Best of
Street Machine, the Tough V8s, Hot Holdens and Hot Fords mags,
and the 32 Summernats issues. They all had Street Machine in
their titles – are they now to be counted as proper issues of Street
Machine?

Please help me. I have been a fastidious collector of the magazine
since #5 of Australian Van Wheels. Please tell me I have it all correct
and I don’t need to go through 400 magazines and re-number them.
Allow me to finally lay my weary head down and get some sleep!

Regardless, I still love the magazine and the work everyone does
getting it out to us fans every single month. You are all legends.
Thanks for letting me rant.

Brad Hayes, email

G’DAY Brad. First up, thank you for your dedication and passion.
We never get tired of hearing about readers who have lovingly
collected every issue of Street Machine.

Yep, because of the way in which SM gradually evolved from
Australian Van Wheels, exactly which issue constitutes the first SM
is a matter of opinion. You could make a case – as you have – for
it being the Australian Van Wheels & Street Machine with Alley
Cat on the cover, or – as we did in the December issue – that it’s
the first issue where Street Machine gained prominence on the
masthead. Equally, one could make the argument that the issue
that saw Van Wheels dropped from the masthead completely
should be considered the first issue of SM.

I will make the point, however, that the 2020 and 2021 Yearbooks
absolutely constitute fully fledged issues of Street Machine,
as opposed to the one-shots and specials you mentioned. The
Yearbooks came about because management was keen to
squeeze 13 issues of SM into a calendar year. We had to call
them something, and ‘December-and-a-half’ didn’t exactly roll off
the tongue. But the Yearbooks are formatted exactly the same
as a regular issue of SM, and slot in between the December and
January issues in the on-sale schedule rather than being sold
alongside regular monthly issues like the specials are.

My sincere apologies if this has served to further complicate your
numbering system, and thanks again for your support! – Broads
