it’s a bit thirsty.
How did you come across it?
After my memories of loving Brock Commodores was
spurred a few years back, I decided to look for a Tuxedo
Black, M21 manual VC. I was patient, and this finally
came up at auction four years ago – I could see it but
not drive it. It had 102,000 kays on the clock, and at the
time I felt a solid body and decent interior were more
important than testing for driveline issues.
How did that work out?
I found out that low kays isn’t always a good thing. The
engine was tired and neglected from just sitting around.
It was using a lot of oil, so I had Savy Motorsport strip the
308ci and rebuild, balance and blueprint it.
Is it all original?
As much as I can tell, and it’s in pretty good shape. It
was resprayed in the 80s, so it’s showing a few minor
cracks now, but I don’t mind. The Carmine-coloured
SL/E interior is all original – everything works, including
the radio. The trim itself is in great shape – though it’s
not a Commodore if it doesn’t have a cigarette burn on
the driver’s seat!
What are your plans for the VC?
I was going to use it sparingly, to keep it fresh and the
odometer low. But once I had the motor fixed, I started
using the Brock more, as I love driving it. I’ve put a fair
few kays on it now, as I figure there’s no point keeping
it good for the next owner. I want to get out and enjoy
it, heading out to car shows, meets like Northern Gal,
coffee-and-cars events, and runs with my fellow HDT
Owners Club members. s

Street Machine Legends Volume Two. Our lord and
saviour Simon Telford agonised over a list of cars we’ve
featured since 2001 to come up with 64 beasts that have
had a major impact or dropped jaws when they adorned
the pages of this horsepower bible. The 144-page hard-

became inspired to restore my own vehicle since his passing in
2001, so it brings me great pride to present my car, which has
taken me close to nine years to restore. It runs a Ricky Steffens

backed by a Trimatic gearbox and 2200rpm stall converter.
A VS diff has been cut and shortened to fit. It originally had
a sunroof, which was removed, and the rear quarter had
damage; sorting the bodywork took 10 months alone. The
brilliant artwork under the bonnet was done by Zoomin

highs and lows, his spirit will always live on in this car. My

the heart of the car is now a 2007 Gen 1 Suzuki Hayabusa

a lot more than I am capable of throwing at it. Inside there
are Mazda MX-5 seats, with a half ’cage/seatbelt mounting

car in a few places to do this conversion. I have louvred
the bonnet, and there are two holes cut either side of the
combination radiator/oil cooler – one for fresh air to the pod
and the other to get some air past the exhaust. I have also
widened the tunnel at the front to fit the inline transfer case

AFTER a one-year hiatus, the biggest
horsepower party of the year is finally
set to return to Canberra when Street
Machine Summernats 34 rolls into
Exhibition Park, 6-9 January. The 2022 ’Nats
promises to be a cracker!
“This is looking like it’s going to be the biggest
Summernats ever,” said ’Nats managing director
Andy Lopez. “There’ll be record-breaking entry
numbers – over 2500 – as well as the largest
Burnout Masters field ever with the biggest prize
money we’ve ever offered, the most unveilings
we’ve ever seen and the world-first Summernats
Fringe Festival activation in Braddon.”
The Fringe Festival will be a groundbreaking new
addition to the ’Nats, with a portion of Braddon
closed to civilian traffic on Friday and Saturday
evenings, leaving the roads vacant for up to 600
Summernats entrants to cruise in a controlled
environment. All the bars, pubs and businesses
will be open, there’ll be live music and food trucks at
the car wash, and the public will be allowed in free
of charge (on foot). “The residents and business
of Braddon really wanted this to happen, and we
reckon this is a first of many activations like this,”
said Andy.
COVID-safe practices will be implemented
throughout the precinct, but there is no vaccination
requirement for entrants or spectators, as per ACT
Government regulations. “There may be capacity
limits on the indoor spaces, but the grandstands
will be at maximum capacity, which is awesome,”
Andy said.
The rules around masks are constantly changing,
but as Andy said: “Observe social distancing where
you can, and if you can’t, put a mask on.
“No matter what we’re asked to do, we’ll do it,” he
continued. “If wearing a mask or observing social
distancing is the price to pay for going to the best
car festival in Australia – and the price to pay for
us to put it on – then we’ll do it, with a big bloody
smile on our face. We’re really lucky to be back, and
what we are about is putting on a really safe event.”
Skid Row will be back and firing on all cylinders,
and there’ll be improvement all over the EPIC
precinct to help make this Summernats the most
enjoyable ever. “There’s going to be plenty of
cooling stations, more seating, more shade, and
there’ll be a new shaded area down at Skid Row,
along with the big screen,” said Andy.
The Summernats crew will also have a new
marquee set up outside the Rare Spares pavilion,
where they’ll be selling merch, and it’ll also act as
a broadcast studio with special guests (including
some SM royalty), where spectators can also chill
out and take a breather from the action.
This year’s music comes from young Aussie
hip-hop stars Kerser and Hooligan Hefs on Friday
night, before DJ sensation Hot Dub Time Machine
lights up the decks on Saturday night, along with a
fireworks spectacular.
Throw in the biggest-ever Burnout Masters field
(60 cars) and the massive unveiling of over 20 new
stunners, and Street Machine Summernats 34 is
set to be one for the ages.
