The 2019-2020
Season

We create opportunities
for the exchange of
ideas that fuel our
fundamental curiosities
while challenging and
positioning us to see
the world beyond the
lenses of our own lived
experiences.

WELCOME!

A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

It is with tremendous pride that I welcome you to a new season at the Luckman
Fine Arts Complex at Cal State LA, the University’s home for professional
visual and performing arts. The Luckman is a beacon and resource of cultural
discovery for the campus and for the community at large. Being an integral
part of these communities is something we cherish and value. Over the years,
the Luckman has presented artists from around the corner and around the
world; idols, icons, legends, and luminaries.

Together, we’ve shaped the cultural landscape of our city with over a thousand
presentations and exhibitions that have contributed profoundly to the multi-
layered renaissance that has helped position Los Angeles as a cultural capital.
With each presentation, we create opportunities for the exchange of ideas
that fuel our fundamental curiosities while challenging and positioning us to
see the world beyond the lenses of our own lived experiences. In the process,
we celebrate and explore the unique cultural diversity that lives in each of us
and reaffirms our connection.

It is your continued support that validates our commitment to the belief that
the arts enrich life in ways that nothing else can. I thank you, our patrons, for
making the Luckman your home for these beautiful experiences.

Enjoy the season!

RAIFORD ROGERS

MODERN BALLET

August 24, 2019 | 8:00 PM | The Luckman Theatre

$30 - $50

“Raiford Rogers’ latest colorful moving pictures lift
off from stage...A grand sense of freedom!”
- Los Angeles Times

Raiford Rogers Modern Ballet returns to the Luckman stage presenting
the world premiere of Act 2: Garden of Untamed Roses. The new ballet
is the second act of Rogers’ 2018 critically acclaimed Naivete of Flowers.

The objective of the ballet is to give an essence of grass or flowers blowing
in the wind, and artist Mike Nava will again create a series of projected
abstract paintings for the ballet’s backdrop that accentuate the illusion.

The full-length ballet, Naivete of Flowers (Acts 1 & 2), is set to the
music of Lloyd Rodgers’ 1986 The Little Prince. The choreography
accents Rodgers’ post-minimalist style, so the performers reveal a sense
of freedom filling the stage with beautiful imagery.

Raiford Rogers is an acclaimed choreographer who has created over
50 ballets including numerous collaborative pieces with prominent
musicians and artists. His works have been performed throughout
the US, Europe, and Latin America, and have twice awarded him the
National Endowment for the Arts Choreographer Fellowship.

A lecture on cultural diversity by one of Hollywood’s
most prolific and multifaceted actors.

Award-winning actor BD Wong is one of America’s most versatile
performers. BD has been on screens big and small for the last 20 years,
appearing in such hits as Law & Order: SVU, Oz, Gotham, Jurassic Park,
and Jurassic World. He received an Emmy nomination for his role as
Whiterose and Minister Zhang in USA Network’s Mr. Robot.

and Drama Desk Award, making him the only actor to ever win all five
major New York theatre awards for a single role.

BD’s experiences in an industry fraught with rejection, typecasting, and
racism have given him a sharp perspective on the subjects of diversity
and equality. Lauded for his resonant and inspirational messages, he
speaks on issues such as self-image, Asian-American parental pressure,
the “model-minority myth,” and the challenges of multiple identities.

NRITYAGRAM

DANCE ENSEMBLE

October 19, 2019 | 8:00 PM | The Luckman Theatre

$30 - $50

“One of the most luminous dance events of the year!”

- New York Times

The Nrityagram Dance Ensemble of India was established in 1990 to
preserve India’s 2,000-year-old classical dance traditions. Nrityagram,
which means “dance village,” was established in a rural setting as an ideal
place for studying dance according to ancient Indian tradition, which
involves direct training from guru/maestro to shishya/disciple, and full-
time dedication to the art. Here the dancers not only spend several
hours in practice and rehearsal, but also interact with visiting musicians,

composers, and scholars. Many company members participate in
outreach programs for children in nearby villages. In short they live and
breathe Odissi.

Nrityagram Dance Ensemble is much more than a dance company. It is
a crucible of inspiration and ideas, a coming together of creative minds,
which push themselves to the absolute limits of their abilities. A space
where dancers, musicians and choreographers live together for years,
developing their ideas, perfecting their technique and complementing
their learning of dance with a knowledge of mythology and the epics,
Sanskrit, yoga, meditation and the martial arts.

And on the 366th Day, a once-in-every-four-years affair, spotlights
the musical and lyrical prowess of Jack and Benny Lipson, a.k.a.
jackbenny, Los Angeles-native twin composers, songsters, and multi-
instrumentalists who inject the craft of musical theater into a spectrum
of sonic worlds. Heralded as “a testament to their generation,” their
progressive and fresh harmonic language informed by classical and jazz
roots complements their savvy lyrics that tackle myriad contemporary

social/cultural phenomena, from queer identity and consensual conduct
to healthcare bureaucracy. In a comedic and colorful exhibition of
provocative originals with a healthy heaping of sibling shtick, the Lipsons
guide audiences on a candid tour through the delicate, well-curated
millennial mind.

Jack and Benny have supported such luminaries as Idina Menzel,
Josh Groban, Herbie Hancock, and Barry Manilow, and they serve as

$30 - $50

“Witty madness...dazzling and delightful!”

- New York Times

For almost five decades Mummenschanz’s non-verbal theatrical
language has continued to develop independently of the contemporary
mask-theatre quintessence. The stories told by Mummenschanz are
completely visual: no musical tracking, no stage set. The artists use their
bodies, objects, and masks that evolve against a black background to
compose a playful paralanguage that can be understood by all.

Since its successful three year run on Broadway, Switzerland-based
theater troupe Mummenschanz has pioneered a new form of visual
theater that has since spawned multiple new genres reclaiming their
legacy. By creating a playful yet compelling experience through the
inventive use of shadow, light, and creative manipulation of objects,
Mummenschanz offers timeless insight about the human condition. The
result is a visually stunning spectacle that transcends cultural barriers
and sparks the imagination.

You & Me brings to life the large scale masks you’ve grown to love;
as well as reviving a historic tradition of acrobatics. The show will also
include some of the classic sketches that have stood the test of time.
Their soundtrack is the awe, joy, and laughter that audiences experience
and have grown to love for nearly fifty years.

JOHN WATERS

“King of camp!” - Vanity Fair

John Waters comes to the Luckman to celebrate his birthday. The
influential filmmaker and beloved raconteur, who was proclaimed “the
Pope of Trash” by no less than William S. Burroughs, is turning 74!

Although Waters, who’s given us such inarguable classics as Pink
Flamingos, Female Trouble, and Hairspray, hasn’t directed a feature film
in years, he’s kept busy writing books, being commemorated with prestigious

retrospectives at New York’s Lincoln Center, as an in-demand guest on
talk shows and lecturer and has been honored by Lambda Literary with
the organization’s Trustee Award for Excellence in Literature. So this is
the ideal time to rewind and think about just a few of the many indelible
reasons John Waters has become America’s favorite weird uncle.

After making a number of no-budget renegade flicks such as the
evocatively-titled Hag in a Black Leather Jacket, Waters first came to
national renown with the 1972 release of his seminal Pink Flamingos.

The evening will conclude with an on-stage Q&A where audience
members will have the opportunity to engage with Mr. Waters.

“You need to hear San Cha’s divine Latin music.”

- Dazed

San Cha is a singer-songwriter, based in the City of Angels, increasingly
known for her visceral and explosive live performances. Her name,
derived from the Spanish word sancha, which translates to ‘mistress’, is
a mischievous reference to the title of “San,” given to male saints in the
Catholic tradition. Fans of cumbia and punk, bolero and electro, flock
to see San Cha’s emotional renditions of traditional Mexican rancheras
and original songs that focus on queer conventions of identity, power,
and love.

Her striking stage presence is accompanied by the one-of-a-kind
garments she adorns, aesthetic reflections of the years spent performing
in the San Francisco Bay area.

Inspired to pursue music professionally after joining a church choir at
the age of 12, a career in music was always in the cards for San Cha. As
the daughter of Mexican immigrants, her unique sound draws inspiration
from the music and rhythms she grew up with as well as the punk culture
she grew to appreciate.

San Cha was most recently the headlining act at the kickoff of the 2019
Red Bull Music Festival, the Levitt Pavilion, the Getty Museum, and the
Santa Monica Pier.
