A student newspaper is the ideal
forum for student comments on
school issues. Under the dedicated
leadership of Michael
Gunzenhauser the Signet has
attempted to improve upon the
successful newspapers of the past,
add more features, and increase
coverage of school events. The
newspaper has become more
controversial, and through
controversy it has become a larger
and more informative publication
for Bishop McGuinness.

CHORALIERS

The Chorus was a group of hard
working young people who
obviously enjoyed singing for the
entertainment of others. Each week
sopranos, altos, tenors, and basses
worked to blend their voices into
harmonious melodies with which
they delighted their audiences at
school liturgies, Christmas and
Spring concerts, and graduation.
Along with their director, Sister
Alma, Rose, and the rest of the
music department, this club
provided many a “happy sound”
for Bishop McGuinness.

Moderator: Sister Alma Rose.

SPINA BIFIDA CLUB

The Spina Bifida Club was a
dedicated, responsible group of
young adults whose fundamental
purpose was ministering to the
needs of others. They were actively
involved at the Children’s Center,
helping with candy sales and
parties at Halloween, Christmas,
Valentine’s Day, and Easter. They
helped the Spina Bifida Association
by providing free babysitting and
by sponsoring the baked goods
booth at the Annual Spina Bifida
Rummage Sale. Their ministry was
also extended to include the Soup
Kitchen and Crisis Control.

Moderator: Miss Bailey; Pres.: Jennie Hall; V. Pres.: Carol Leftwich.

RED CROSS CLUB

The Red Cross Club participated
in several Red Cross sponsored
activities both in school and in the
community. Volunteering at the
Blood Bank, preparing tray favors
for the Veterans’ Hospital, and the
Adopt-a-Grandparent program were
on-going projects. Assisting at
McGuinness' Blood Drive in the
spring was definitely the highlight
of the year for the members of this
club.

endeavors to create an enjoyable
Prom.

THE KEY

The Yearbook Staff is proud to present the 1983 Key.
We hope that this will remind you of some of the great
times of the past year and give you a treasury of memories
for the coming years. This edition was brought to you with
the help of the noxious paint fumes created by covering
the walls of the Yearbook’s Executive Suite with a
blinding yellow. Never before has a color been made that
could cause hallucinations of horror as the dreaded
deadlines approached swiftly. Nevertheless, even with the
paint fumes, skipping typewriters, shaking tables, and
curving rulers, the dedicated Yearbook Staff was able to
meet all deadlines through a blur of gutters, picas, and
subordinate clauses. At the helm of this madness was a
true Confederate who attempted to maintain order with
bribes of chocolate-covered strawberry candy and threats
of overdoses of Extra-Strength Tylenol Capsules. Special
thanks go to Ms. Rentz whose patience and perseverance
helped everyone during the long afternoons. She was an
island of sanity who prevented the staff members from
creating a book full of headless people.

Teachers are men and women who have chosen the The Most Reverend Michael J. Begley, D.D.
occupation of instructing the young to help them grow Bishop of the Diocese of Charlotte
into well-rounded adults. Educators not only pass on
information, but they also train their students to think
and to reason. The faculty of Bishop McGuinness is
devoted to instilling wisdom based upon Christian love.

Bishop McGuinness has instructors who care about
their students. They are dedicated to providing their
pupils with the skills necessary for a successful future.
The teachers are concerned if someone in their class
does not understand a certain concept. They generously
give of their time during lunch or after school to help
these students.

The Bishop McGuinness faculty is demanding of the
students, yet they do not demand as much of others as
they do of themselves. They strive tirelessly not only in
teaching scholastics but in coaching athletics, guiding
clubs, and serving the school in all school functions.
This example of service provides an ideal of the
Christian leader which the students can follow. The
faculty recognizes its potential for enhancing all facets
of the students’ growth. The Bishop McGuinness faculty
does not shirk this difficult task but faces the challenge
with the enthusiasm that can only come from a firm
faith and resolve in their goals as educators.

The faculty of Bishop McGuinness High School is
devoted to giving wisdom based on Christian love to the
students. Because of their dedication they are the
leaders of a special community. They embody the noble
ideals of enlightenment that set them apart from mere
teachers and make them Christian educators.
