Final reflections and thoughts for 2015. Head of LOTE Faculty
Personally, I dream of cruises, of simple but luxurious times alone on an
island, reading a good book watching time go by and imagining a world free
of war, terror and poverty. I dream of being pampered and enjoying long
massages and aromatic manicures and pedicures. I dream that my son
grows up with fine morals and compassion for the world around him. I know
this sounds bizarre but it is my dream. One must have dreams. Dreams
make us believe. Dreams make us humans. As per the above quote, most
of us have to work for our dreams. That’s fine. I’m not afraid of hard work,
nor do I steer away from it. I have dedication and vision, which together with
faith put me in a good position to understand the power of dreams and their
“eventual” realisation.

At times like these I recall the words of the great Bruce Lee.

“I am not easily discouraged. I readily visualise myself as overcoming
obstacles, winning out over setbacks and achieving “impossible”
objectives”.

MR GREGORY SHEATH HEAD TEACHER COMPUTING STUDIES

COMPUTING STUDIES

Another great year with all the students competing in UNSW
computing competition and Software design students plus
interested computing students competing in the UNI Sydney
programming challenge. Vineel Repaka from Yr9 came first
in 2 categories at the UNI Sydney programming challenges.
This year we introduced Drones into our robotics courses
which Yr 9 felt was really worthwhile.
Yr 9 students assisted Homebush Public school gain an
appreciation of robotics with visits there to explain what they
did with Lego and Sphero Robots.
Gaming design and programming was popular with Yr 10
students again and many students produced worthwhile
games using HTML, Flash, javascripting and Gamemaker
software.

MR ALAN EVERETT HEAD TEACHER SCIENCE

SCIENCE

Science has become news again as an emphasis is
placed on STEM subjects in schools. And about time
too!
So what can we do in the Science faculty to
encourage an interest and passion for Science. It all
has to do with inspiration, how to inspire in students
the curiosity and interest that is fundamental.
This year we have introduced online textbooks for
years 7 and 10 and in 2016 we intend to expand this
to include the wonderful “Intoscience “ interactive
program for years 7 and 8. We also intend to go
notebook free for year 7. Exciting opportunities!
Science week event; G and T camp to Canberra;
competitions for Science, Chemistry, Titration;
wonderful Field Studies for Junior and Senior
Science; all opportunities for students advertised and
encouraged: all meant to inspire an interest in the
wonderful world of Science.

2015. His role has been filled by Mr. McKee and Mr Lucas whose efforts and energy
this year have been appreciated by staff and students alike. It is reassuring to know
that when History staff are on leave we are so well supported by very experienced
and dedicated casual staff. Ms. Budanovic, Ms. Caramancion, Mrs. Degney and
Mrs. Symonds are all specialist History teachers who have continued their outstand-

is looking forward to another successful year in 2016. There will be two classes of
Modern History and two classes of Ancient History in Year 12,
as well as a History Extension class. In Year 11, there will be two classes of Ancient

Mrs Greenshields has been successful at interview and has secured a three year secondment with the
Department of Education as a Senior Pathways Officer. We wish her all the best in this exciting new
endeavour. Annette Houvardas will be replacing Mrs Greenshields in her absence. Mrs Houvardas has
worked closely with our students and staff since 2006 and is a great asset to the Hospitality department
and Homebush Boys High. Ismail comes from a Hospitality background and has completed Certificate III in
Hospitality. He continually upgrades his training and is now studying Certificate IV in patisserie. He has also
been a great asset to the faculty and has enabled greater opportunities to our students such as demonstrat-

Catering

Food Technology and Hospitality students have numerous oppor-
tunities throughout the year to contribute to the school community
by catering for various functions. This year we have catered for the
following functions:
• JM15
• Ramadan Iftar
• Multicultural day
• Year 12 graduation luncheon
• White ribbon day
• Prefect induction

We take a lot of pride in our catering and each year evaluate our
success and respond to feedback with the focus on making each
year an even greater success. Students benefit from invaluable
experience by helping with preparation in the weeks leading up
to a function, cooking and preparation and by serving food on the
day. Our senior hospitality student also achieve units of compe-
tency and get assessed on completing a number of service peri-
ods as there is a mandatory requirement of 12 service periods
over 2 years. Students complete 10 service periods during work
placement in both year 11 and 12. The other service periods are
made up of the community functions we cater for at school.

YEAR 7 HAIKU POEMS

CO-ORDINATED BY MRS GINETTE BALL

Ms. Ball’s Year 7A students wrote poignant Haiku poems for
ANZAC day. They subverted the traditional subject matter, writing
about the destruction caused by war instead of writing about the
celebration of nature. The results were intelligent, powerful and
moving in their elegance and simplicity.

YEAR 7 CAMP EXPERIENCE
by Carl Arthur

Year 7 camp is a great experience where you make new
friends and have a great time. There are heaps of great
activities at camp. At this camp you make lots of new friends
just like I did. Also, you will be able to share great stories with
them through the rest of your time at Homebush Boys.

In the great activities at camp you might be the best or the
worst at something but you always need to give everything a
go because you will have a great time doing it and you may
even find out that you are the best at something in the whole
of Yr 7.

I had a great time at the camp because it was fun. It was
a great opportunity to make friends and to share new
experiences with other people.

DUKE OF
EDINBURGH
TASMANIA

WRITTEN BY MR ANDREW LAI

Nine courageous young men and two adventurous
teachers embarked on a once in a lifetime journey to
Tasmania for the Duke of Edinburgh Gold hike.
The trip started off with a 4:30am wakeup to catch the 7:00am
flight from Sydney domestic airport to Launceston. From
there, we drove to Freycinet National Park and set up camp at
Richardson’s beach for the following two nights. At night the
frosty winds from the sea swept across the campsite and crept
into our tents, keeping virtually all of us awake! We hiked near
the camp-site vicinity including Wineglass Bay and Hazards
Beach circuit.
On the third day we drove from Launceston all the way down
to Hobart and briefly stopped by at the MONA (Museum of
Old and New Art) to immerse ourselves in a tad of Art culture
before heading off for more intensive hiking. We set up camp
at Mount Field national park and tackled an all day hike at Tarn
Shelf circuit the following day. Our fifth day consisted of hiking
and getting lost at The Needles for about half an hour before
proceeding to finish off at Lady Baron Falls and Horseshoe
Falls. We woke up at 3:30 in the morning to pack our tents
in pitch black to ensure we would not miss the flight back to
Sydney.
