INTERSCHOOL SPELLING BEE 2016

Teachers in Charge: Mrs R. Burgess, Ms P. Marks

Teams:
Year 9: Paul Kaiser, Piripi Pinfold-Whanga, Tomas
Luque and Jamie Thompson.
Year 10: Thiliner Ariyaratne, Ajay Bansal, John Cole
and Zody Takurua

On Thursday 24 November 2016, the PNBHS Year 9 and
Year 10 spelling teams travelled to Feilding High School
to compete in the Interschool Spelling Bee. There were
approximately eight teams in each competition (Year 9 and
Year 10). In the Spelling Bee, we had to write down English
words such as cartographer, luscious, vengeance and
etiquette. We also had to write down definitions of words
like hypothesis, gargantuan and vegetarian. There was also
a round of spelling Maori words, such as Papaioea, taniwha
and turangawaewae. Lastly, there was an oral round where
one representative had to stand up and spell a word like
hieroglyph. Paul Kaiser did this round for the Year 9 team
and Thiliner Ariyaratne did this round for the Year 10 team.

At the end of the Spelling Bee, the results came in and PNBHS
had won both the Year 9 and the Year 10 competitions. Each
team member was awarded a medal and a certificate, and
there was a trophy for each team to take back to school. I
would like to thank Mrs Burgess and Ms Marks for managing
the team. Overall, it was a great experience that I recommend
taking part in.
