QUADRANGULAR – Wellington
This event has been going since 1978. Auckland Grammar
have dominated over this time, but in recent years, they have
not been able to field their 1st team due to other events
clashing. The six-man team format is a little different to what
the team usually plays. This event was made even tougher
due to the unavailability of our Number 1 and 2 players from
the side that finished second at Super 8.

Auckland Grammar - Loss 3-6: This tie was very close.
Three of our losses were in third set super tie breaks. It was a
good performance, bouncing back from the disappointment
of the morning’s loss. Caleb Young gave a standout
performance, beating the Auckland Grammar Number 1 in
straight sets, with wins also to Josh Sorensen and Alex Evans.

Wellington College - Loss 0-9: Playing a full-strength
Wellington team, our side struggled. We came close to
gaining sets in a couple of matches with Josh Sorensen
and Caleb Martin in the singles, and the Alec Pedersen/Josh
Sorensen combination in the doubles.

Hamilton Boys’High School - Won 5 – 4: This was another
close tie, and this time, a very clear-cut result. Again, Caleb

The future of Touch Rugby at Boys’ High is exciting! Typical Palmy weather coupled, with a late start, saw a
somewhat stunted season for the Senior B Boys Touch Team.

However, when on-deck, the Senior B’s displayed strong
moral support, devastating sideline comments and at-times,
some above average Touch Rugby skills.

Although the win/loss ledger hovered on the negative side (a
matter of perspective I suppose), the merry band of warriors
remained positive and gave their all on and off the field,
despite the sometimes arctic conditions.

Thank you to the College House Matrons for providing the
necessary transportation and to the young men of the Senior
B Touch Team who remained positive, despite the weather
and scores, as the season drew to its inevitable end.

Both teams had plenty of chances, but the Premier A
team missed more in losing 8-7. In the final game of the
tournament we played St Patrick’s Silverstream, whom we
had beaten comfortably two weeks before. Poor defence and
poor shooting from PNBHS saw us behind 3-0 early, before
we mounted a comeback. Henry Moir found his shooting
form with a couple of nice outside shots. The team clawed
back to be level 7 all with seconds. A last minute timeout
move from us provided the perfect opportunity to win the
game but we didn’t take the shot.

Overall, it was a disappointing season from the team.
However, as the core of the side will be back in 2018, it bodes
well for next year. Both Hamish Eagle and Cam Pomana
gained invaluable European experience during the July
school holidays and will look to add this to the mix next year.
The three departing players, Josh Beattie, Jonas Holman and
Horatiu Susa, have all been valuable team members.

The Under 16 team played in the Wellington league during

competition, with the only victory coming over the Maranui
B side during the round robin. A much depleted team, due
to other commitments and discipline issues, then headed to
Auckland for the Division Two National Club Championships
in the September school holidays. With only eight players, it

There are a large number of Under 14 Water Polo players in
the school this year. Although their National Championships
will occur after the publication of the Palmerstonian, the
team has made a very positive start to their season. The team
played in the Wellington League during Term 3. In the first
round, they drew with Maranui and lost to both Hutt and
Harbour City. In the second round, the team improved with
a comfortable win over Maranui, a draw with Harbour City
and a loss to Hutt. In the semi-final, the team comfortably
beat Maranui (9-5) to put them into the final against Hutt.
The final was a real‘arm wrestle’and, although the final score
line was an 11-2 loss, it was not reflective of the game.

The team then headed to the Nippers Cup in Lower Hutt
at the start of the September school holidays. Showing
the benefit of actually playing Water Polo, the team beat
Marlborough 15-5, with Jake Thompson scoring five goals.
An 11-5 victory over Harbour City saw Leo Gordon and
Jake both score four goals. The team then managed to
find themselves in a big hole, being 4-1 down at half-time
against Maranui. After a bit of soul searching, we put on a
very big third quarter, putting away five goals. This led to
an 8-6 victory that displayed some real resilience. The final
game of the round robin against Hutt was a superb game of
Water Polo. Joe Inman stepped up at centre forward, scoring
two great goals. Ultimately it wasn’t quite enough, with the
team losing 4-3. The semi-final against Maranui was very
one-sided until the final quarter. The 8-6 victory was never
in doubt. This meant that the team played Hutt for the third
time in four days in the final. At 3-2 down early in the last
quarter, with both goals to Daniel Turrill, we felt right in the
game. The long weekend took its toll and the team ended up
