YOUNG MINDS AT WORK ……VALUE YOUR PRIVILEGESAs I sat in the comfort of a school bus heading home, I glanced out the windowand saw a sight that stayed with me. There was a shanty, and a poor family ofabout 8 to 9 people sitting huddled together. Their home was a crooked hutbuilt out of tin sheets and bare bricks. A woman was cooking for her family, while a girl about my age—wearing a faded, second-hand t-shirt—carried atoddler clinging tightly to her. She should have been going to school and living alife that every young girl deserves, but instead, she was surviving in suchdifficult conditions, without any complaints or tantrums. Even though I saw thissight for just a fleeting moment, it had a lasting impact. The slow truth dawnedon me that most of us often don’t realise how privileged we are. Despite havingall the resources required for living a comfortable, fulfilling life, we crib attimes. Little do we know that the things we believe are ‘insufficient’ for us mayhave a high value for someone else. After seeing that family survive on a bareminimum, I realised how much I have and I truly felt grateful to God for this life.Whenever you think you don’t have enough, remember those people who aresustaining themselves in such situations. Take time to reflect- become moreaware, more grateful—and never take your opportunities for granted.AASHVI THAKURX ALPSHALF IN TOMORROW, HALF IN MEMORIESThere was a time when we used to count down the days to field trips, not boardexams. A time when we spent free periods playing games, not with a pen in handjotting away. Each period would blur together in laughter and excitement, marking the end with a bell that would send the whole school into a flurry. Andnow, the tolling of the bell seems to grow fainter as we drift further away fromwhat used to be.It's that subtle change in conversation from cartoons to college, from teststhat barely leave a dent to exams that shape our future. The feeling creeps inrealization that with every step we take towards our future, we leave memories oflate-night hangouts and under-the-table pen fights behind. Its not just the yearlyschool trips or carnivals that we’ll miss- it’s the small ones; copying off homeworklast minute and searching frantically for a textbook only to end up sharing it witha friend. You catch yourself staring after a group of younger students, andremember yourself being one of them. You remember when school was justschool- not this last looming bittersweet chapter. We’re taught to look ahead, but maybe, in this in-between space, it’s alrightto look back too. To miss what once was, and to soak in every moment like it’s thelast. Because not long ago, we couldn’t wait to grow up, and now we realize howmuch we’ll miss the days when it didn’t feel like time was passing at all.PRISHA PATHANIA X OLYMPUS

YOUNG MINDS AT WORK ……MULTITASKING: THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE CHAOSHave you ever felt that your brain is browser? With dozens of different tabs opennot allowing you to be focused on one thing? One second you’re finishinghomework and the next, looking up a random question you need to know theanswer to, only to be distracted by the sudden urge to re-organise your desk? Well, you’re not alone, because it turns out it happens to almost everyone!Multitasking has become the norm these days, especially with learners and theyounger generations. This constant shift in attention isn’t just a personality quirk;it is actually an integral part of brains work. But with the current influence of socialmedia and an overdose of information, multitasking has taken a new gigantic form:one that is not exactly healthy for students (or anyone, for that matter). In fact, aresearch from Stanford University specifically states that multitasking is a myth.Yes!Our brain doesn’t perform several activities at once, instead, it quickly switchesbetween tasks, and this makes it harder to concentrate and get tasks done. Eachtime we divert our attention, whether it’s between homework or random thoughts, our brain gives us a small burst of dopamine, which is basically our brain’s ‘reward’chemical. This creates a cycle where our brain keeps hopping around, trying to findsomething different and stimulating instead of sticking with the same task. That’s why focusing on just one thing can feel boring compared to the thrill ofjumping between many different ideas. And, many people try to multitask becausethey think they are being more productive, when in reality, the opposite ishappening. Trying to multitask is proven to actually decrease efficiency. So, it isimportant to try to reach a state of focus instead. Some people are able to reach astate of strong focus (what experts call “deep work”), but for most of us, helpfulmethods like the Pomodoro Technique (which involves working for 25 minutes andthen taking a short break) can make a big difference during studying or any otheractivity.Simple tools like writing to-do lists, journaling or even a little meditation can alsohelp manage all the things going on our minds. Personally, I use scrapbooking withstickers, cut outs and cute art supplies for this, and it works wonders for me!At any moment, my brain is processing several things like what’s for lunch today, the homework our teacher gave us yesterday, or a random question like why didhumans land on the moon, before adding wheels to suitcases. Even though all thesethoughts can feel overwhelming at times, they show how much our brains aretrying to adapt in this new, busy and fast-paced world. The goal isn’t to close everymental tab, just to know when to pause a few, and when to keep the rest open. So, let’s let go of the pressure to multitask at all times – and let’s allow ourselves tofocus on one thing at a time, give it our full focus and then move on to the nextthing. Yes, as learners, we do have miles to go before we sleep - as Robert Frostsaid, but let’s take one step at a time and do it well. GAURI KUMARVIII AMAZON

YOUNG MINDS AT WORK ……\"Law and order exist for the purpose of establishing justice, and when theyfail in this purpose, they become the dangerously structured dams thatblock the flow of social progress.“— Martin Luther King Jr.Law and order are the key ingredients of a civil society. They need to be perfectlysynchronised with other elements of governance and social harmony. It isimperative to ensure that our pursuit of justice does not undermine thedemocratic institutions of our country. In a country where bureaucrats are frequently victims of political abuse of power, how do we, as citizens, trust the government? Recent cases in Odisha andHimachal Pradesh exemplify the normalisation of violence and crime in politics—and in our society as a whole. In a country where policemen resort to extrajudicial killings because our legalsystem has failed to provide proper redress to its citizens, how can the commonman trust the very courts and administration meant to serve him?In a country where federal institutions are employed to intimidate theopposition, where political leaders abandon ideological integrity for power, andwhere data is suppressed before elections—how can the masses place their trustin the representatives they elect? YOUNG MINDS AT WORK ……The Abandoned Bowling AlleyEvie and her best friend, Sarah, had to go to a mall for a birthday. When theyreached the given destination, there was nothing but a junkyard. They lookedaround a bit but could not see the bowling alley where the birthday was supposedto be. As a last resort they decided to go in a building in the middle of thejunkyard. The building looked like it had not been used for a long time as there werecobwebs on the entrances, dust on the windows, the lights were not lit and theinfrastructure looked fragile. Both of them stepped inside and found an old styledmall with old brand shops and ancient posters. This mall looked like it had notbeen used since the 1950s.Sarah was scared but thought maybe this mall had an old bowling alley that wasstill in use. They went further into the mall and found the map of the mall next tothe escalators. There was an arena named bowling alley next to the kids play areaon the top floor so Evie decided to check it out. They were a bit terrified as the oldmall looked creepy and they had a feeling that somebody was following them.Despite this, Sarah wanted to check it out in the hope that they will find theirfriends. They decided to climb the escalator, but as soon as they stepped on thefirst stair, it started moving. A chill went down their spine as what had happenedwas not understandable. Still, they went up to the top floor and entered thebowling alley. The bowling alley was covered in dirt and dust. As the door opened, a big, brownspider jumped on to Evie’s face and she screamed, leading her voice to echoaround the room. They waved a cobweb out of their way and entered. Inside, tables were overturned and chairs were pushed back. On some tables there wereplates covered with mold and remains of food. It looked like people had escapedfrom this arena in a hurry, abandoning their food and belongings. No traces of thecause that led the people so many years ago to abandon this bowling alley couldbe seen.Suddenly, they heard a loud bang from behind them, as if someone had hit a drumreally hard. Both Sarah and Evie looked around to see that a big shoe rack hadfallen in front of the door closing it and blocking the entrance. They were terrifiedand tried to move the shoe rack but it wouldn’t budge. It was like the shoe rackwas a boulder as big as an elephant. Seeing no way out of the bowling arena, theydecided to roam around and look for other exits. They moved towards thebowling lanes and scoring displays. A --window was visible and they decided toput their effort in a try to open it, but the window was jammed like it had notbeen used in decades.MISHIKA ARORAVII CHENABTo be continued……

YOUNG MINDS AT WORK ……The Abandoned Bowling AlleyThis was a bit suspicious as hand marks on the window handle and foot marks onthe floor were clearly visible and still wet, meaning that these marks wereabsolutely more recent than the rest of the building. The marks were most probablyfrom that very day because if they had been any older the water would haveevaporated. Evie was terrified as she thought that if the marks were wet then theperson who they belonged to could still be there giving more certainty to her feelingof being followed by someone. All of a sudden, Evie heard a scream from behind her and turned around to seeSarah, completely mortified, looking towards her shoulder. When Evie looked atSarah’s shoulder, she saw a shriveled hand but with a tight grip. She was too scaredto speak and didn’t dare scream incase whoever the hand belonged to intended tohurt Sarah. She was trying to calm her mind down and form a plan as Sarah lookedtoo scared to think. Then the hand let go of Sarah’s shoulder and pushed herforward. Before their minds could start working again, the window opened andanother hand mark appeared on the window handle. Footprints appeared on theground as if someone was walking but no one was visible. The footprints nearedthem and they moved back in fear. Unexpectedly, words appeared on the groundbeside them:Go AwayThen, an ear piercing screeching came from behind them. They slowly went in thedirection of the sound and saw the shoe rack being moved from in front of the door.As soon as the shoe rack was moved, the door swung open and Evie and Sarah ranout and down the escalators. Even though the escalators were moving, they did noteven have a second of time and ran down them too and as they reached the bottom, the door of the mall flew open. They swung out through the door and out into thejunkyard. Both of them rushed into their car and drove away on full speed. They drove through deserted streets and busy city roads, not even stopping oncebefore reaching their neighborhood. Only after reaching the threshold of theirhouse, did they take a deep breath. Sarah was sure that she wouldn’t be able to sleepthat night. They decided to make a pact never to go within a hundred meters of thatjunkyard, ever, again.MISHIKA ARORAVII CHENAB

YOUNG MINDS AT WORK ……A HIDDEN EVIDENCE Avery was brilliant and street-smart. She went to Blue Horns School and was oneof those invisible students who could disappear into the background withoutanyone noticing. The only thing that set her apart was her uncanny ability to solvesmall puzzles and cases before the police could. She had a fascination with criminal investigations and loved listening to podcastsabout cold cases that had gone unsolved for years. At the moment, Avery was gathering information about a mysterious case fromthirteen years ago — seven girls had gone missing from seven different states, and not one of them had ever been found. She sat in a small, cozy café near her school, one of her favorite places. She alwaystook the booth at the back by the window, surrounded by her notes and files. Asshe reviewed the details of the case, a woman suddenly slid into the seat acrossfrom her.Startled, Avery looked up. The lady seemed to be about twenty-five years old, with a sharp jawline and hazel-brown eyes that sparkled with curiosity.“Would you help me solve a cold case?” the woman asked out of nowhere.“Specifically the one you’re working on right now.”Avery froze, staring at her in disbelief. “How do you even know about that? Is thissome kind of joke?”The woman smiled faintly and slid a business card across the table. It read:Agent Lacy Locke — Federal Bureau of Investigation, Cold Case Division.Avery blinked. This was real.“I’ve been watching your progress for a few months,” Agent Locke said calmly.“I’ve seen how you collect clues, how you connect things others miss. You’vesolved local mysteries that even trained officers couldn’t crack. You come herealmost every day, take this same booth, and work through cases methodically. Ineed your help.”Avery hesitated, her mind racing. Then she said, “I’ll help — but only if you giveme access to the transcripts, witness statements, and all the data you have. I can’tfind the truth without the full picture.”Locke nodded. “That’s exactly what I wanted to hear. But one rule — this staysbetween us. No one else can know, and we handle all evidence carefully, withgloves.”“Of course,” Avery said, leaning forward. “Now, can we get started? I’ve got aboutfour hours before I have to be home for dinner.”MIHIRA DASVIII MISSISSIPPITo be continued……

YOUNG MINDS AT WORK ……A HIDDEN EVIDENCE The two dove into the files. Avery’s sharp eyes scanned the transcripts, underlining details, circling inconsistencies. Agent Locke watched quietly, impressed by how Avery caught lies buried between lines of grief. After hours of reading and comparing notes, Avery noticed something odd — astrange similarity in how all seven mothers behaved during questioning. Theirstories had small, identical gaps, as if rehearsed.“You saw it too?” Locke asked when Avery pointed it out. “I missed thatcompletely.”By the time Avery realized it was late, she had to rush home. The two exchangedgoodbyes, and Avery walked back, her mind spinning. She couldn’t believe shewas helping a real FBI agent — maybe one day she could be just like her. That night, while reviewing the files again, something clicked. A pattern. Themissing girls had all attended similar charity events organized by the same nonprofit foundation a month before their disappearances.Avery’s pulse quickened. She wrote everything down in her case file, connectingnames, dates, and motives. The next day, she returned to the café, file in hand, ready to meet Agent Locke. But before she could sit down, Locke appeared and quickly guided her outside.“We can’t talk here,” she said firmly. “The café might be compromised.”In the safety of Locke’s car, Avery explained her findings — the pattern, thefoundation, the link between the families. Locke’s expression shifted fromdisbelief to admiration.“You did it,” she said quietly. “You found what every investigator missed forthirteen years.”Avery felt her chest swell with pride. “So… what happens now?”Locke smiled. “Now we reopen the case officially. And I’ll be recommending thatyou assist us — maybe even as a junior consultant. The Bureau could usesomeone like you.”For the first time, Avery realized her hobby — the thing that made her invisible —had finally made her seen. She wasn’t just solving puzzles anymore; she wassolving lives.FEW DAYS LATER….Avery got a phone call from Agent Lacey saying that she could officially be thejunior consultant for the cold cases divisions working directly under Agent Laceyand solve another kidnapping case that had just taken place a day ago.MIHIRA DASVIII MISSISSIPPI
